The lore of Haruhi Suzumiya in a nutshell is like
Tumblr media
I'm gonna go find a VAMPIRE.
Tumblr media
Excellent. That should keep her busy for most of the day.
Tumblr media
There is actually a vampire.
Tumblr media
Oh, no! Somebody go jangle keys in front of Haruhi so we can take care of this!
Tumblr media
Ugh. Fine. On it.
Tumblr media
WOO-HOO JANGLE JANGLE
Tumblr media
The vampire has been destroyed.
Tumblr media
Bleh. I've looked all over the place and there's no vampire. Oh well. Better luck next time.

In Dragon Ball Fighterz, the playable character Captain Ginyu stood in for the Ginyu Force as a whole. Most of his special moves would have a different member of the Ginyu Force jump in and attack the opponent on his behalf.
This move summons Guldo to paralyze the foe. That move summons Recoome to hit the opponent. Etc.
Yuki Show episode 3 made a compelling argument that in a Haruhi Suzumiya fighting game, Haruhi's movelist should work like Captain Ginyu's. All of her special moves summon her minions to attack - With Yuki, Mikuru, and Itsuki attacking the foe of their own volition, while Kyon's attack consists of her reaching offscreen or behind her or something, grabbing him by the face, and hurling him at the opponent as her projectile.

It's nice to get some non-gross Mikuru content. I haven't talked much about Mikuru because she's...
She's hard to talk about.
Tumblr media
Mikuru bonding with, uh... with... the sister....
Does she have a name?
Anyways, Mikuru bonding with Kyonsis is cute. I wish I could like the Kyon/Mikuru ship. Which is to say, they get enough cute moments and development together that I would totally support this ship if the show didn't also have Kyon grossly indulging in Mikuru's harassment too.
...in general, a lot of the way the show handles Mikuru is gross. Like. They even brought in Future Mikuru at one point to wax nostalgic about Haruhi's harassment.
Tumblr media
That's the kind of move a creator makes when they know they're being gross and want defensibility. "It's okay, she secretly likes it; She'll look back on it fondly some day."
I'm never really sure what to make of Mikuru because this isn't, like, a Male Gazey kind of show. It doesn't have the typical background noise of camera shots lingering on objectified body parts or slow panning over female bodies that typify shows made from the perspective of the Male Gaze.
Even things like the bunny girl outfits or Haruhi aggressively beginning to change while people are still in the room as a power play aren't dwelt on to the extent you'd expect from the Male Gaze.
But Mikuru feels like a character from one of those kinds of shows. The recurring joke is Haruhi physically bullying Mikuru, forcibly stripping her, making guys molest her, making her dress in various fetishized costumes, forcing her to eat expired shit from that guy's fridge they broke into, etc. - often to the point of leaving Mikuru in tears, and... that's it. That's the punchline. LOL Haruhi objectifies her body and treats her like shit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is one of three main things Mikuru does. The second is to form a Love Corner of
Haruhi -> Kyon (<-?) -> Mikuru
And honestly? Like 90% of the time, Kyon and Mikuru's interactions are great. But then he does shit like saving those erotic Mikuru photos he made Haruhi delete to a private folder for his personal perusal. Or says shit like this.
Tumblr media
Or the show does shit like this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Future Mikuru literally telling Kyon, "For compensation, feel free to make out with my past self while she's drugged!"
He does not. Thankfully. But it's so fucking weird that she even said that. Why would you write this dialogue?
And then her third thing is time travel. Which isn't given the same level of gravitas as Itsuki and Yuki. She can't fight the battles like they can. She can't exposit information like they can because everything's classified. She isn't even very good at time travel; It's explicitly brought up that Yuki's better at it.
Essentially, she has no powers or abilities beyond being present in the group so Kyon can ogle her and Haruhi can molest her.
If this were a big Male Gaze type of show, I'd be like, "Oh, yeah, she's the Fanservice Girl. Got it." But it's not. So I just. I don't understand why she's handled like this. Why is this here?
Which is what makes it nice when the show isn't doing that, and instead we get nice Mikuru content where she's being happy and everyone's treating her well.
Tumblr media
Less of... whatever all of that is and more of this please. She's great with kids! She plays Go Fish!
Tumblr media
Which she took second place in, by the way. Mikuru beat God at cards and entertained the small child while doing it. So HA!

Oh cool. Kyon has enough pattern recognition to skip a few steps of the plot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kyon walks in like, "Alright, pretty sure this guy's fucky too so let's just skip ahead and give me the deets."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Three years sure is a "coincidence" of a number too. Yuki said she's three years old in the earlier conversation; as in, she was created to observe Haruhi three years ago.
Mikuru wouldn't tell Kyon any details about her mission but at this point it can probably be assumed that she's been in this time period for three years too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah, Haruhi has to be doing this. It's been all but stated at this point that Haruhi is unconsciously rewriting reality to suit her interests. Or... unknowingly wrote reality three years ago to suit her interests. Or something.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay I guess this is happening now
Wow. God's kind of a jackass. XD
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...could we not say that? Because that is far more existentially horrifying than the local violent misanthrope having subconscious reality-warping abilities.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If we don't entertain the violent misanthrope then everybody dies
Holy shit. DO NOT give my characters this kind of power. The whole world exists as a sandbox for an impulsive teenager aggressively lacking in basic human empathy. This is a Cosmic Horror story the likes of which Lovecraft wishes he could write.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
UH-HUH
YEAH
YEAH
DO THAT
Under no circumstances can the violent misanthrope find out that she has almighty power and dominion over all people and things that exist.
Man, this show is absolutely nothing like what I thought it was going to be. Nonetheless, I am hooked.

The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan, Episode 13 - The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan, Part 3
The final chapter in the The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan arc of The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-Chan, which inexplicably neither begins nor ends the series.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm pretty sure she means this purely figuratively but also Haruhi powers means there's a non-zero chance that Yuki's identity crisis could cause a world-cramp.
T_T Factory Settings really getting to me in the short time she's been with us.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Factory Settings taking everyone to a book fair and. Like. You can feel the Sword of Damocles hanging over her neck. In context, this is presented as Kyon wanting to do something nice for Yuki and Yuki getting to pick the activity.
But the vibe is very much "If you had one day left to live, how would you want to spend it?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They're just hanging out and having a good time but the melancholy music and Yuki's general attitude sells the existential terror lurking in her heart. The clock is counting down to when she effectively reboots into the identity that was created for this reality.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh, and now we're literally doing "What would you do with your last day?" Okay. @_@
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
T_T Factory Settings is saying out her goodbyes. She has existed for five minutes. There aren't many people for her to say goodbye to.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The difference between all three of these things is ultimately philosophical. But it's meaningfully philosophical. It speaks to how Yuki is experiencing and interacting with her own sense of self.
At the end of the day, this arc is intensely personal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
T_T STAB MY HEART WITH A RUSTY KNIFE WHY DON'T YOU
Tumblr media Tumblr media
T_T She finished the book that she was so enraptured with at the library.
I wasn't even consciously rooting for that but now that it's been brought up I am so happy she was able to finish it. T_T
Tumblr media
OH GOOD SHE FINALLY SAID IT MOMENTS BEFORE SHE DIED
GREAT
THANKS
WHY YOU GOTTA BE LIKE THIS WRITERS
WHY YOU ALWAYS GOTTA BE LIKE THIS
Tumblr media
Kyon furiously rolling Concentration checks in his head to see if, just once, just one time, he can actually follow the plot that's been put in front of him.
Tumblr media
So help me if they do a bereaved love triangle of Escapist Yuki -> Kyon -> Factory Settings (Deceased), I am going to be SO GODDAMN.
I will throw things. At people. They'll be passing under my balcony when suddenly the biggest book I own hits them in the head and I'm just up there shouting 'THAT'S FOR YUKI!!!"
Tumblr media
FUCK YOU WITH ALL OF THE KNIVES SHOW
T_T T_T T_T T_T
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hard drive reformat at 100%. System reboot complete. Please log in to Yuki.exe.
It feels so good to have her back and yet ALL OF THE FEELS for the temporary version of her that's now been fully re-subsumed into her persona.
And the truly ironic thing, the thing that is KILLING ME more than anything else? Is this guy.
Tumblr media
For once.
For once in multiple goddamn lives.
This man is the only person alive who actually understands the plot of what just happened.

I can't get over this part of the Haruhi dance.
(Yes, I keep looking up the full version of the dance just to watch it now that I know who these characters are.)
Haruhi grabbing Yuki by the shoulders and just walking her out of the way for Mikuru's solo. Absolutely kills me.
Yuki doesn't get a solo. This is Haruhi's song, save for Mikuru's solo. Yuki gets moved aside as if she were a set prop. The disrespect.
And yet. Would Yuki even want a solo? I don't think she'd be comfortable in center spotlight. I think she's only participating in this dance number because she was told to be here.

Oh cool, place your bets on what this one is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
TAKING ALL BETS, TAKING ALL BETS.
1 - Space Alien 2 - Time Traveler 3 - Esper 4 - Deity 5 - A secret fifth thing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh she brought you here to kill you. My dude, turn around and run for your life because the tone of this conversation is not very Slice of Life Anime.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yep. That's it, Kyon. That's what she's talking about. She isolated you in a classroom super late when nobody's around to hear you scream and is asking you weird questions because she's interested in economic policy.
You know what? Go ahead and kill him. If he can't feel out the tone of this conversation after three separate talks with supernatural beings about Haruhi, then there's no helping it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wait, what XD
Okay, I was half-joking with the "She brought you here to kill you" bit. I legit thought this was just going to be another, "By the way I'm uh, spin the wheel, a MOLE PERSON and super interested in observing Haruhi, just wanted you to know!" talk.
But nope. I actually called it. She's going to stab Haruhi's pet in the throat and see if that John Wicks her from violent misanthrope to cosmically enraged super-deity. She got bored with watching slice-of-life anime and wants to make it a battle shonen instead.
Okay. I am here for this. And at least now Kyon's finally figured out the context of--
Tumblr media
*deep breath*
Please kill him. He will not be missed.

Kyon. No. Bad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's rare to say this but this group's collective abuser is right.
This is not a date, Kyon. Don't do that guy thing where you try and invent a romantic context out of a non-romantic situation.
I'm not saying you need to do what Haruhi's telling you to do. In fact, your best option right now is to both fucking bail as soon as her back is turned, and maybe find an adult.
And. Like. If Mikuru wants to go on a date with you, that's fine.
But don't assume, man. Don't take advantage of Haruhi's bullshit to entrap her like that. Be better than Haruhi.

Holy shit, that took a turn.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...and God.
Frustrating as the arc's been up to this point, the emotional confrontation hits. I was not prepared for this sharp turn into solid drama.
I think this is why Sigh ramped up the Mikuru bits. They took too long getting to this point (unsurprising in the same season that gave us Eternal Eight) but I get it now. Haruhi's always been the show's main point of conflict but this arc pushes her into full-blown villainy.
Tumblr media
There is a point being made here. Courtesy of the group enabling her behavior, Haruhi is getting worse. She started out a selfish, violent misanthrope and now she's getting worse because her actions don't have consequences.
This is the reason, the exact reason, why she can't be allowed to know that her will governs the universe. Filming this movie allowed Haruhi to play God, and gave everyone a real taste of the kind of God she would be.
(I love how ugly her expressions get to be here. Animation quality through the roof for the sake of thoroughly animating the contortions of her face as she scowls furiously and screams her head off at Kyon. For daring to have a problem with her drugging Mikuru.)
It gets so bad that Kyon almost does it. He almost starts The Fight He Can't Win that he's threatened a few times.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And. They. Stop. Him.
Even Haruhi's victim stops him.
He can't hit her. They have to let her do what she wants. Because she's God.
This has been the ominous reality in the background for the whole show up to this point, but here it's really laid out there. How truly, genuinely horrifying this reality is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Screw you. Mikuru deserves better friends. You're on the Shit List, Tsuruya.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yo, Itsuki just posted his latest Anime Theory about what's going on in the show.
New possibility: Maybe Haruhi isn't God, but rather a divinely chosen human tasked with reshaping the world from the shitsack that it is into something more favorable. And we're the ones selfishly blocking her from her duty so we can continue to linger in the world we like better.
I like how the show doesn't conclusively explain Haruhi. She's a time anomaly. She's the key to cosmic evolution. She's God. She's a miraculous prophet. It's all presented as theories and suppositions by various characters, with no concrete answer ever given.
Because "What is she?" ultimately only matters for academic purposes. We would like an answer so we can type it up for her wiki page. But it's not what the story's about.
What she is doesn't matter. That she is, is what matters. The consequences of her choices matter more than where she came from. She doesn't need to be explained. She's a Weird Cosmic Thing that happened one day in a great and unfathomable cosmos that owes you no answers. We can only observe her and try to make our best guesses.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And now she's suffering consequences.
It's not fair that these people have to bend over backwards for her. It's not fair that the fate of the universe rests on the entertainment squad jangling keys in front of her for the rest of her life. Haruhi was born into the ultimate privilege.
But that is what is. And you have to live in the world that is, even as you work to make it better or keep it from getting worse.
I don't think Kyon did anything wrong here. For once. Haruhi's depressed and... that's concerning, of course. Gonna want to cheer her up before she decides she doesn't like this world anymore or that Kyon and his stupid face should go away.
But someone had to speak up. That Haruhi cares what this trash boy thinks means he is uniquely positioned to tell her off when she goes too far. Which he often does but... this time it actually got through. Because it wasn't just a snippy comment; It was a screaming match that nearly became a fistfight. It was friendship destroying.
God. I relate to this so hard. I have been her. She needed to learn that she can be hurt by the consequences of her choices. Even if that hurt was, in this case, more emotional than physical.
She needed to lose something. Even if only for a day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like that Kyon doesn't apologize here. Because he isn't wrong. He doesn't offer her forgiveness because that would undo any personal progress she might have made from questioning herself.
Look at the vulnerability in her eyes as she turns to look at him, before her confident mask slips back on. She's been thinking. She's been experiencing the post-eruption regrets and doubts that always sink in after you lose your head.
People who haven't wrestled with anger management might not know what it's like. But this is how it goes. You scream. And you hurt the people you love. And you storm off. And then you break down and cry and ask yourself why you just did that, why you keep doing that. Why does every relationship end like this? That is what a meltdown is like.
She isn't mad. She wants to be mad. She tries to be mad when he walks in. But she isn't mad. She's scared. Scared that her selfishness destroyed a relationship she'd been taking for granted. And that's a good thing for her to feel. That is the feeling that is going to guide her to better behavior.
Haruhi needed this.
So it's good that Kyon doesn't apologize. Instead, he takes a diplomatic approach, not invalidating what just happened between them but conveying to Haruhi that he is still willing to be her friend. He doesn't offer forgiveness. He offers a second chance to be better.
I don't know if the show will stick this, or if she'll be right back to over-the-top abusing Mikuru next episode. But in a vacuum, this episode got really fucking good out of nowhere.

The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan, Episode 5 - Her Melancholy
You know what, that's fair. I'm still mad but that's fair.
Again, I love Haruhi, she is my character, but I want the first thing I see this episode to be Haruhi flung violently out the window. Here we go.
Tumblr media
Okay, Yuki probably wouldn't violently fling Haruhi out the window. Running away crying in an anxiety panic is more believable.
But you, Ryoko. You can do this. I believe in you. You are the epitome of Lawful Menace and you can hurl that trespasser through that window. Here we go!
Tumblr media
She is holding it. She is holding Yuki's chocolates.
I mean. Reasonably speaking, Haruhi is innocent of any wrongdoing here. She had no idea. She met a boy, wanted to hang out, and hit it off. She barely even knows these people. Haruhi has done nothing wrong.
If she and Yuki were pals and she knew about Yuki's crush, then yes. If Ryoko had done this, then it would be a huge betrayal and personal violation of Yuki's friendship. But Haruhi's under no obligation to hang back and refrain from flirting with guys she meets in case someone else had eyes on them first.
As... bizarre as it is to say given her behavior in the other show, Haruhi is not the Bad Guy (TM) here. Reasonably, Yuki is simply running into the brick wall of "You never made a move". A curse that afflicts many a neurodivergent and anxietous person with their first or even later crushes. She had her chance at the Christmas Party and even tried to shoot her shot, but she took it back and let it pass her by. Now a bolder and more confident person is scooping him up instead.
That is a reasonable assessment of what's happened.
However, I have watched Yuki agonize over her feelings for four episodes so I am not feeling reasonable. I want Haruhi hit by a truck.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For real, though, I do feel for Haruhi here. She has no idea why Ryoko's furious.
This is the kind of character drama where nobody's really in the wrong, and that's always the most heart-wrenching of all. Haruhi was right to take her chance but Ryoko is right to be livid over it.
Tumblr media
Oh shit, she wasn't even flirting.
(Opportunity to research Japanese Valentine's Day unlocked. Today I Learned Something!)
Episode 4 even set this up with Mikuru and Tsuruya discussing obligation chocolate. Valentine's Day in Japan is celebrated by the practice of women giving chocolate to men, but there are two different kinds: Inexpensive obligation chocolate and handmade true feelings chocolate, the latter of which can be used as a romantic confession.
Obligation chocolates are given to whatever guys happen to be in your social space. Colleagues, friends, acquaintances, etc. Just to avoid hurting anybody's feelings. Which has come under fire for pressuring women into pacifying men, with many opting in recent years to give friendship chocolate instead to just the people they're close to.
But, in any case, obligation chocolate is what Haruhi was doing here. She was just participating in a holiday custom, whereas Yuki and Ryoko spent the better part of yesterday whipping up heartfelt true feelings chocolate for Kyon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Awww
Okay she no longer needs to be thrown out the window. They totally faked me out back there.
(Partly because I didn't understand chocolate politics. I did think it was odd that Haruhi was casually handing Kyon what is clearly just a Hershey's bar from the corner store but I figured that was just Haruhi being the type to buy her chocolate rather than make it at home. I did not realize there were actually different cultural meanings to the different gestures.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Did she know that? She popped by yesterday and Kyon told her, "Yeah, everyone went home so club's cancelled." And then the two of them went off and hung out instead.
How would Haruhi know that Yuki was preparing true feelings chocolate for Kyon?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lawful Menace is as much of an emotional roller-coaster of First Time Feeling Things as Yuki is. She just hides it better.
Ryoko Asakura is this show's MVP. No question. I like how she cherry-taps her punch because she even at her wit's end, she can't bring herself to attack another person over something she knows, in the rational part of her brain, isn't their fault.
So she takes a moment to just. Break down. And cry. And work through her feelings. This is good. Meanwhile poor Haruhi isn't really consoling her so much as she winds up having to be breakdown adjacent.
Sometimes there's nothing you can say or do. Sometimes you just have to be breakdown adjacent.
Tumblr media
Yuki is entirely to blame here. She saw chocolate and had a panic attack. Even though, unlike me, she's lived in this culture for her entire life and would know what obligation chocolate is.
Ryoko needs to throttle Yuki. With love. But also throttling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There we go. Throttling with love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She doesn't even realize she dropped the box.
So she didn't have a panic attack and flee. She's just. A disaster.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SHE WAS GIVING HARUHI PRIVACY TO WOO THE BOY SHE LIKES
Yuki. Yuki. Why are you the most precious thing ever to walk on Haruhi's green earth?
Tumblr media
Yuki sitting there like, "I'll be okay with it if you like Kyon too."
And Ryoko's face like, "I won't. I'll cut a bitch."

Here we go. The grand finale of the infamous arc.
Episode 19: Endless Eight, Part 8
This loop's a little different. Kyon flirts with Mikuru when he arrives at the group.
Tumblr media
Haruhi does... this.
Tumblr media
But it's hard to say if these deviations mean anything or if they're just standard probabilistic variances.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We almost got to see what happens if Kyon kills himself with a firework mid-loop.
Do you think we'd have to continue with the rest of the cycle? Or would Haruhi be like, "No." and break time? Uh. Break time even further, I suppose.
I definitely feel like if anything actually happened to Kyon at any point, Haruhi would happen to reality like Madokami/Devil Homs. You thought the world-cramping was bad? She's about to unleash a full-scale world-seizure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There have been no further trips without goldfish scooping since we started following the loops. Good. I'm still mad about those.
Also I realize now that I was misunderstanding the 437 number. I thought it was 2 trips with no Bon Festival and 437 trips with no goldfish scooping. And since the goldfish scooping happens at the Bon Festival, that means 435 trips where we go to the festival but no scooping happens.
But no. The statistic is 437 trips where we go to the festival but no scooping happens. So that's two extra "OKAY BUT WHY THO" loops. I hope everyone in those loops died horribly because Mikuru puts up with a lot of bullshit and she deserves to have nice things.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
HAHAHAHAHA I was right.
She wants him to ask for her help with his summer homework, since his lazy ass waited for the last possible second.
Tumblr media
Pulling everyone together into a study group to get it all done on the last day. That is what Haruhi keeps resetting time to get done. That's... uncharacteristically selfless of her, actually.
Just. Uh.
Tumblr media
Make sure you run it by our supreme deity first, rather than speaking insubordinately about it. XD What a fantastic anticlimax for Kyon's revelation. I love the idea that the thing Haruhi was missing, the one thing that kept making her reset time because she felt unfulfilled, was that she's never had a last-minute cram session with friends on the final day of a vacation. On account of being too goddamn smart.
I feel like this is actually Kyon's fault. Like that talk he and Haruhi had about the summer homework is actually what put the idea in her head to begin with that this was a thing she wanted to experience. But then she forgot, because despite being God, she is also a fallible human being.
Eight episodes of looping was too many episodes of looping. But this is the perfect way to finally tie it off.

I am starting to see why Endless Eight has the reputation that it has. Though I'm still enjoying it.
Part 3 really did just go through all the same motions as Part 2. Even the "Wait, we're in a timeloop?" stuff ended up being identical to Part 2's "Wait, we're in a timeloop?" stuff. It's the same episode with different art.
That's not a dealbreaker for me, because I can see value in whole-ass repeating an episode. It conveys just how hard it can be to escape a time loop like this if you have to start over from zero every time. When the only person who even knows about the loop isn't trying to end it.
Someone really needs to tell Yuki, "From now on, come find me at the start of each loop and tell me everything." She'll do it if she's asked to. But she needs to be asked to.
In any case, like I said, the fact that nothing new happens in Part 3 is okay with me because it sells the tone of the looping plot. But I am worried about the fact that there are five episodes left in this arc. If they're like this one was, then I can see this getting old.

Going yukata shopping is a bit different this time around.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I cannot pay attention to Kyon reciting the narrative because I am way too distracted by what's going on in the shot.
...did Kyon just react with violent homophobia over how pretty that bow made Itsuki look? Is that what I'm seeing here?
