5, 10, 13, 23 for you know, the usual two suspects!
Tumblr media
How far is your OC willing to go to get what they want?
I'll answer for both at once since it's a similar answer. This comes as maybe no surprise in Taryn's case, but Yehl, I think, is just as equally driven, given the right circumstances. Once Yehl has the power not to take no for an answer, whether it be through his influence over Taryn, his eventual power as Celaedian, or his own growing self-confidence, he steadily starts to stand up for himself more and more. I think once he reaches full adulthood, one would be pretty foolish to try and stand in his way. To protect or keep what they love, these two would lie, steal, cheat or kill (depending on who needed killing), hands down lmao.
What's an AU that would be interesting to explore with your OC?
I've had this idea in my head for years now, but never the time to even kind of conceivably work on it, it's called Last Train Out. A pseudo-30s/40s AU based on this old photoset I did wherein Yehl is a successful jazz singer and Taryn is a seasoned soldier about to be shipped off to war and they have this sort of dreamlike whirlwind romance before the separation. I do also have some early drafts of their modern AU, which more closely resembles the actual events of AoA, called Forevermore, and actually have some sets built and plans to post that one (maybe someday). But LTO I'm sure will never see the light of day so we can be sentimental about the might have beens ;)
If you met your OC, would the two of you get along?
LOL. I'd love to say I'd get along with both of them, but given their high standards, I don' think they'd get along with me. At least they can both bond over their superiority complexes.
What emotion is the hardest for your OC to process? How about express?
Taryn - Empathy. Love being a close second, but I think he manages to bridge that gap as best he can. His "love" for Yehl might always be slightly different than your conventional idea of love, but is just as, if not more intense. Empathy, however, is not something he ever learns. He rarely feels remorse for others, though does feel guilt for the things he's done in the past that have directly caused pain or trouble for his own kin. But that comes more with his burden of responsibility as king, and if he was anyone else and not born to fill a role, I doubt he'd feel the same. He only outwardly protects the elves on Yehl's command, and later spares mankind out of sheer civility. Even with Yehl, he struggles to feel sympathy for his struggle, oftentimes using this knowledge as a means for manipulation, but he does have a fondness for Yehl's brokenness. Again, I don't think any of that is particularly healthy, but he is still a dragon and very much falls back into animalistic behaviors as a baseline nature. Yehl - Ah, this is so much harder. I'm going to say... isolation. Which is... he's not unaccustomed to loneliness, but he fears being entirely abandoned. This is a sentiment that expands rapidly upon meeting Taryn, but even when he was younger, he's always has someone to rely on. First his mother, then Nuuriel, Judine, and eventually Taryn himself. But because of what Taryn is, Yehl is constantly put in a position where he feels sort of... left out to dry, for lack of a better term. Taryn can only meet him halfway, and for most of act one, he doesn't even allow him that much. Ironic, considering I can safely say Taryn fell in love first, it's just that Yehl's emotions manifested faster and in a way Taryn couldn't understand or reciprocate. This breakdown in communication and behavioral differences causes them so much strife, and a lot of pain, mostly on Yehl's side. Just because he's literally standing next to the person he loves most and feels a thousand miles away.

Is no longer affected by alcohol. A fact he’s increasingly salty about.
His favorite season is and has always been summer, but he has recently started taking a liking to winter, even though it doesn’t naturally occur in his region. He’s become particularly fond of snow ;3
He’s vegetarian by nature, but his favorite foods are sweet fruits like plums, grapes, and nectarines.
Has gradually taken an interest in learning to play a variety of instruments, as music is one of the few things that helps to calm him down.
Since the war, his closest friendship is with Judine, who he feels immensely protective over.

Every odd numbers for Yehl and Taryn! Or you can reduce it to only questions you want to answer. 😁❤️‍🔥
Tumblr media
1. How does your character think of their father? What do they hate and love about him? What influence - literal or imagined - did the father have?
Taryn // Taryn doesn't have a father. His mother was a god of creation, she gave birth to the twins of her own body, but their conception was of her own will. Yehl // Yehl has hated Aseris most his life, but worse, he always lived in fear of him. His father was incredibly toxic and abusive towards both Yehl and his mother, and Yehl has those memories burned into him like a violent dream. But despite how cruel his father was, he was the only parent Yehl had growing up. Losing his mother and having few good relationships in his life, especially familial relationships, when he was younger, drove him to pine for his father's attention and love. Being constantly demonized and told he was a failure, adult Yehl attempted to play into that role, but that, too, was simply a cry for attention. He never was able to earn his father's love, up until Aseris' death, and afterwards, that lack of closure and trauma still haunts him.
3. Brothers, sisters? Who do they like? Why? What do they despise about their siblings?
Taryn // There was a time when Taryn and Elsera got along. When they were young, and before the war, they had no reason to resent each other. But they have always been opposites. Taryn's calm and Elsera's brash were fated to butt heads. Despite the respect Taryn had for her in somewhat successfully ruling on her own for hundreds of years was inevitably dashed by her juvenile actions following the end of Act I. The two of them never reconcile after the events of AoA. Yehl // Oof this is gonna be a lot but he has seven siblings so... Judine was Yehl's favorite sibling ever since he was a child, and he really did idolize him. He only comes to see Judine as, and understand him more on a human level, after the events of the novel, but regardless, they remain very close and supportive. Linaea was a shining light in Yehl's later life. He didn't know much of her until he was already of age, and by then a lot of damage had already been done at Thera's hands, which Yehl held against Lin for a long time. His love for her was often marred with some form of resentment. A fact he doesn't come to realize until after she's gone; that he never was able to love her fully the way she did him. It's one of his greatest regrets. Most of Yehl's siblings he has little to no relationship with. Lonis and Alloria were already adults when he was born, and made no effort to get to know him. He's probably spoken to them less in the course of his life than one might a casual neighbor. While Alloria has no opinion of Yehl, Lonis was dismissive at best. Lore, though closest in age to Yehl, was equally as checked out. This has a lot to do with the Metunor being one of the most widely disparaged clans. Lore's mother advised him not to interact with Yehl lest it reflect poorly on the Metunor's already waning public standing. The sibling Yehl has, perhaps, the most important relationship with, is Porphery, who doubled as Yehl's "godfather". They had an incredibly rocky relationship when Yehl was young, with Porphery being more or less an overbearing babysitter. Their opposing personalities didn't help. But after Yehl becomes Celaedian, Porphery is the most consistent relationship Yehl has. He starts to confide in Porphery a great deal, using him as a sounding board and neutral support system. Yehl takes Porphery's death hardest of all, and is inconsolable for years following, to such a point that even Zehel recalls that period in his childhood with crystal clarity.
5. Were they overprotected as a child? Sheltered?
Taryn // No. Yehl // Yes. Tbh, Yehl is sheltered most his life, and learning to become strong enough to stand up for himself, if not on his own, is one of his main journeys.
7. What was the economic status of their family?
Taryn // Dragons don't really deal in material wealth (I know, shocking, no hoards of treasure here). But ofc, power pays 😋 You can get a lot done when you're king of all dragons. Yehl // He grew up a prince, despite his father having expensive vices and a poor hold on the kingdom's finances. Regardless, Yehl has only ever really known opulence. He definitely got a status (and economic) boost after graduating from disgraced prince to the King's consort.
23. What do they want from a partner? What do they think and feel of sex?
Taryn // Honestly? Nothing. Taryn would have been fine living his life solitary. He was not seeking a relationship, never would have thought about it or desired one until he met Yehl. Yehl just defined that role to him. I don't believe Taryn could have the capacity to love anyone else. It's why he's King Simp, he is quite literally Yehlsexual. Everything Yehl is, is what Taryn loves, and he has no expectations of him, nor would he ever wish him to change in any way. And while he struggled A LOT with the emotional side of their relationship, he used the physical as a way of demonstrating his feelings. Sex is incredibly important to Taryn, because it's his natural way of being expressive. He has long since learned to speak more, to give Yehl actual words, because he knows that's what Yehl needs as a non-dragon, but for Taryn, the physical parts of their relationship are absolutely crucial. Yehl // Once again, being exact opposites. Yehl always found sex to be the least meaningful form of expression. He never actually connected it to the ideas of love or romance until after being with Taryn. For him, it was mostly a meaningless act done for fun, and that perspective only started to shift once he'd already developed feelings for Taryn. Yehl does expect more of Taryn. He's had such little love shown to him in life, and still struggles to differentiate honest and true love from falsity that he really needs it spelled out for him. But he adjusts to Taryn's habits and mannerisms. He still expects shows of affection, even if it's as small as Taryn coming to wake him in the morning, or Taryn's overprotective/possessive nature. He adapts, but also expects that Taryn will be forthcoming about his feelings and intentions.
31. Does your character have children? How do they feel about their parental role?
Taryn // He takes his role as a father incredibly seriously. More seriously than he takes his role as king, honestly. Though he's not the affectionate sort of parent, he was still incredibly involved in Zehel's life as a guiding hand. He wanted to prepare Zehel for a life of complexity, but to ensure that he also kept an open mind. It was important to him that Zehel grew up restrained, humble, and well-educated. He put a great deal of emphasis on Zehel's studies, especially of history. Yehl // On the flipside, ofc, Yehl directly seeks to undo a lot of Taryn's teaching by instilling a proper sense of arrogance and entitlement into his son as he damn well should. Not that any of this really stuck, but he did his best. Similarly to Taryn, Yehl sees his role as a mother as the most important thing in his life. A lot of Yehl's past and life choices called back to his own relationship to his mother, so being that force for good in Zehel's life is crucial to him. He is an incredibly affectionate parent, being the opposite side of Taryn's coin in all ways. He's very open with his love for Zehel, becoming the clingy, sappy SMother we all know he is.

Tumblr media
What architectural or design aesthetic would best suit them?
rococo; especially light or pastel colors, grandiose designs inspired by nature and the pure drama of baroque architecture: one | two | three
If your OC likes art, talk about which piece they would love best.
The Kiss by Klimt is my personal favorite as a representation of Yeryn. Something about the pose just gets me. Both firm and tender, and there's a desperation to the way they hold each other, as well as a deep romance I adore. As for what Yehl's personal favorite would be, I ordered up something sensual, preferably with nudity and lots of drapery and The Cryptid led me to these: Sleeping Hermaphroditus | Undine Rising from the Fountain
What character from myth or fairytale best represents them?
Rapunzel; There are a wide variety of "maiden in the tower" stories, but share similar themes. A young, beautiful woman locked in a tower, usually due to the selfish purpose of others or to keep her virginal. Yehl's younger years are contained. He's only able to go as far as his father allows, making him feel perpetually trapped. Even though he lives well and has everything he needs provided for him, he lacks freedom and agency. As cliché as it is, his story follows the damsel in distress trope, and like Rapunzel, he doesn't really earn his strength and independence until the arrival of the prince. They also both have incredibly long hair.
If your OC was a character in a novel from literary canon, who would they be?
Narrator | The Yellow Wallpaper; Yehl is my favorite character, and it's only fitting that I would choose my favorite short story for him. It's a very feminist piece of literature, but I think its themes are universal in today's world. In the story, the narrator is a woman likely experiencing some form of postpartum after the birth of her child, and her husband, following doctor's advice, takes her to a vacation house and keeps her there. It's more of the same thematic that led me to choosing Rapunzel, but The Yellow Wallpaper focuses in on the woman's deteriorating mental health as she is forced to stay locked in a single room. I relate this to Yehl's numerous unhealthy coping mechanisms for dealing with his life, which he feels he has very little control over. So, the things he can control are generally all just desperate cries for attention. As he grows older, that desperation becomes more pent up and corrosive, more self-destructive, to the point where he verges on the edge of a "snap" on more than one occasion, and in a constant battle with himself as to whether he should give up entirely or to carry on miserably just to spite those that wish him gone. By the end of the short story, the narrator does eventually suffer that mental break, and I just think it's a really tragic and all too real and human depiction of what happens when someone is deeply oppressed by a toxic environment.
If your OC were to live in some other time period, which era would they be best suited for?
Act I Yehl 1920s for sure. First taste of freedom and the falling away of old traditions and restrictions. An endless whirlwind of partying, breaking rules and peak luxury. Post-Taryn and Celaedian Yehl, would probably be 30-40s. The 20s, but more mature.
What piece of moody poetry or novel quote best encompasses your character?
"He wanted all to lie in an ecstasy of peace; I wanted all to sparkle and dance in a glorious jubilee. I said his heaven would be only half alive, and he said mine would be drunk; I said I should fall asleep in his, and he said he could not breathe in mine." - Emily Bronte, Wuthering Heights
What is their character theme song and why? If it has lyrics, which line best fits them?
Why'd you lie in the carnage with me? Why'd you gift me your fallout? You were right, it was on us to see we were holding out."Let Go" - Talos
Talos is one of my favorite artists because of his lyrics. They're not straight forward and he doesn't explain himself, which leaves so much up for interpretation. One of the things I think he does best is embody a feeling of pain and struggle in his music. "Let Go" is Yehl's theme because of how well it personifies that struggle. To me it reads as two people who stay together despite one suffering from extreme mental anguish or fatigue. Maybe it's depression, grief, guilt, who knows. But I think at the core of Yeryn's dynamic, Yehl is such a broken person and Taryn knows it deeply. Though at the beginning he wants little more to exploit that, he begins to take on Yehl's feelings, not internalizing, but simply in a state of constant awareness. Even though Taryn has struggles of his own, this one thing was true early on. He found Yehl's suffering beautiful and wanted to save him in the only way he knew how, by fighting his demons for him. And that line "Why'd you lie in the carnage with me?" resonates with me as Yehl trying to understand that Taryn could love him enough to bear his problems alongside him, regardless of their consequence.
Who is your muse’s muse?
Judine; Yehl always admired his eldest brother. Even from a young age, Yehl emphatically adored Judine. To him, Judine is the epitome of both kindness and strength. In his mind, he puts his brother on a pedestal, believing him to be perfect in every way, and worthy of love. I think the latter, most of all, is why Yehl wishes he could be more like him. As if, if he was just like Judine, he, too, could be loved.
What is a common misconception about your OC?
That he is flawless. As Celaedian, he doesn't lose any of the inner struggle or turmoil of his younger years, he simply matures to a point where he can better cope with them, and prioritizes things besides himself. Even his own son fails to recognize that Yehl isn't perfect. It's such a stark difference to his earlier life when everyone believed him to be a complete fuck up. Outside the context of the story though, I always think it's funny when people see pictures of Yehl without having read the novel, and assume him to be this fragile, precious little bun and Taryn as the dark, menacing force, when realistically their personalities were the opposite of expectation, though nuanced. Yehl has always been mentally fragile, but so many of his behaviors were more of the typical "villain" traits than Taryn's.
What sort of role do they take on in relationships, either familial, romantic or platonic. i.e. are they a defender, protector, nurturer, etc.
Nurturer, even though it takes him a long time to feel strong enough to do so. In his relationship with Taryn, and even with Zehel, he is a constant source of open, unconditional love, and will tell them so even if they can't. He is the softness and the emotionality they lack. They provide him with a safe place to be who and what he is, and he offers his love freely.
What is one thing that they only let those closest to them see?
How hurt he really is. Yehl denies for a long time that he suffered emotionally at his father's hands. He wants everyone to believe he didn't care, and that he was fine. He went out of his way to earn a reputation of being wild and reckless and carefree, but it wasn't who he actually was. He's incredibly fragile, but to him, letting others see him break was an act of surrender. He didn't want his abusers or the people who hated him to have the satisfaction of knowing what they did affected him. Taryn, Judine and Linaea were the only people who could see through him, but Taryn is the first and only person he finally lowered the mask for, and is still the only person he feels safe enough with to openly admit it to.
How would their life be different if they had never met their partner?
I think the sad part is that Yehl really would have been worse off if he'd never met Taryn. He sort of did need someone to come along and save him, because he really couldn't help himself, and even if he could, he'd been so beaten down he'd more or less given up. He would have wasted away on the chain his father had given him. Never loved or been loved, never seen the world. He would have lived his false charade of a life until he faded away, and very few people would have ever known him well enough to miss him.
What was the moment at which they knew they were in love, or was it a slow buildup?
It was a slow buildup, but he felt the physical attraction first. It wasn't until much later when he realized Taryn had the capacity to be gentle with him that the emotional attraction began.
What was it about their significant other that made them fall in love with them? Was it a single eye-opening experience or many gestures over time?
It was Taryn's willingness to listen and actually hear him that Yehl fell in love with. Taryn was the first person he could truly talk to, and honestly, Taryn is a really good listener. Being able to confess things openly was both terrifying and deeply liberating for Yehl. And when Taryn begins to offer more in the way of protection and defense, giving Yehl the space to be weak and vulnerable, as well as a strong force which Yehl could rely on, he can't help but to fall for him.
Which “tortured artist” does your OC share the most similarities with?
Virginia Woolf; Virginia suffered several severe depressive episodes, eventually leading her to take her own life. I think, unchecked, Yehl might have met the same grim fate. Like Virginia, I think what Yehl was passionate about, keeping his mother's memory alive, tending to her garden, and keeping up his walls in spite of everything, kept him going, allowed him an escape, and he was able to outrun his own distress until he found his "cure", so to speak. Unfortunately in the real world, it hardly ever works that way.
What does your OCs handwriting look like?

As a child, he had a much more fragile temperament. He was very nervous and scared easily. He allowed only a handful of people to get close to him, most of whom were female, as he felt more comfortable with their softer dispositions. Inevitably, he would come to adapt those effeminate characteristics in his own way.
The person Yehl admires most is Judine. He believes Judine to be everything he isn’t, and has an undying respect for his oldest brother. He would do absolutely anything in the world for him, even though he won’t admit it.
Actually didn’t meet most of his siblings until later in his life. Due to age discrepancies, he only ever saw Porphery and Lux growing up. He was introduced to Jude earliest; the others he only saw at formal gatherings until he was out of childhood, and by then had already formed his aggressive outer exterior.
Is a complete and utter lightweight.
He is aesthetically driven. He has an eye for beauty and a flair for design, but due to his station, these abilities never really had room to flourish.
