The true biggest flaw of Fe3h is Fódlan doesn't have a Halloween. Can you tell me Hubert and Bernadetta wouldn't go all out for Halloween?
The idea for the event comes about during the White Heron Cup, where Bernie expresses that the dance would be a lot less scary if she could hide her face. She and Hubert had just undergone their B support and Hubert is still looking for ways to make Bernie comfortable around him while not sacrificing his own self-expression. Event Planner Hubert, who secretly enjoys parties but wishes they weren't filled with pretention, invites everyone to a "mysterious costume party" and frame it as a masquerade ball. (We're ignoring the fact that in canon he's like "really, the archbishop wants to throw a party right now?"). With the Vestra planning skills passed down for generations, he takes over the dining hall one night and books Manuela and Dorothea as entertainment (Ferdinand also joins, because he will take any and all opportunity to sing). Ideally, he decorates with as many skulls as he could possibly accumulate (”where did this come from?” “*evil laugh* wouldn’t you like to know”) and many candles. Even for Hubert, however, skulls are hard to come by, so Bernie ends up carving faces into pumpkins. Her weird idea is met with delight. The whole scene is slick and dark and the dance itself is held at midnight.
It 100% gets shut down in the middle, but it sure as hell was worth it.
What Everyone in Black Eagles Wears:
Edelgard - *slams fist on table* valkyrie Edelgard!!! She and Hubert make a set of black wings with leftover feathers from the Flame Emperor costume and she uses her armour from class as a template. She is many girls' gay awakening that night.
Hubert - a Dark Falcon Knight costume complete with a black helmet with plummage. It covers his eyes sharply, in red, and his cape trails behind him on the ground. The black feather details are kinda sus, but people go "oh it's just Hubert being dramatic". He's just too obvious to be involved in the Flame Emperor plot, come on now . . .
Bernadetta - of course I'm putting Bernie-bear in a bear costume. She has an adorable brown cloak with little bear ears on top that she made herself. The hood comes down really low, so much so that she put slits for her eyes. After the event she starts attending class like that. Byleth wants to make it the house uniform on the battlefield.
Dorothea - she borrows one of Manuela's old costumes, from one of her starring roles as a showgirl who marries into nobility. There are full peacock feathers circling her and there’s more jewels on it than she’d ever worn in her life. Manuela’s performance as this role was her bi awakening and wearing the costume feels too sacred (”if I sneeze in this outfit I will destroy it and owe the opera money even though the production is long over and Manuela owns it”). Petra notes that Dorothea is reminding her of home, because she looks like an exotic bird. She takes breaks from singing to flirt with the Bleagles girls mingle!
Ferdinand - Dorothea tells him he'll be in her good graces if he comes dressed as a bee. Not only does he oblige, but he goes all out. He wears a black jacket with sharp tailcoats to emulate a stinger, a black-and-yellow striped shirt, a gold vest, and a set of wings. He wears a bee antennae headpiece with flowers attached to it. Dorothea feels a little bad for making him go through the effort but he is genuinely embracing the bee lifestyle and everyone is super impressed with him.
Caspar - he just wears his battlefield clothes. (I made him a grappler in my first playthrough, so I’m imagining him in that beautiful outfit). When asked if he dressed up, he claims that he’s a warrior.
Linhardt - draws whiskers on his face and claims he's a cat. Everyone teases him for being low effort until Byleth walks in, also with cat whisker face paint and no other effort.
Petra - she initially panics because she wants to attend but has nothing suitable. She doesn’t want to wear any of her Brigidian clothes because they are not costumes. Inspiration hits her one day when Byleth accidentally hits her with their trailing jacket sleeves while zooming through the monastery at a speed no one goes at in their everyday life. She borrows a jacket and slumps it over her shoulders, puts her hair down, and tries to keep her expression blank. She even makes a copy of the Sword of the Creator. The costume is a massive hit.
Additionally, consider the following interaction:
Edelgard: It's no use. Nothing I own is suitable for the occassion!
Hubert: Well, save for that one costume.
Edelgard: . . . I am not exposing myself as the Flame Emperor for a party

21: Supports with Wasted Potential
I'm trying to even remember all of the supports... Most of them are pretty solid, and there's not much I found myself wanting for. But there are two, largely because they just stop at B and didn't offer what I would've wanted from them, and they're both Lysithea supports oddly enough. Marianne and Annette. With Marianne, most of it is Lysithea coming across as harshly trying to get her to stop being so self-defeating, which is very much how Lysithea is, but they never really go into depth much with it, or have that resolve post-timeskip where Lysithea can interact with her more when she's confident. It just kinda...ends, and doesn't go anywhere. But this one didn't have a ton of potential to begin with. Annette had a bit more potential, and was a similar vein. Annette is a hard worker who asks Lysithea for help learning concepts. We get a bit of Lysithea being harsh with her about not being self-defeating...but their B-support has Lysithea acknowledge Annette as a hard worker. They recognize each other, and develop a kind of magical rivalry where they both want to push themselves to keep ahead of the other. But it just kinda stops with Annette asking her for help again, and not really doing much with it. I'd like to see more engagement between the two about what they think of the other, or more recognition of how far they've come. It just feels like something that has a good setup but a limited payoff, which is a shame because it's my favorite Golden Deer and Blue Lions characters interacting but doesn't get much going for it.
25: Character you think is underrated
I mean, Bernadetta comes to mind because I recently heard that age-old argument that she's badly written, but considering she's been top 5 in the female division for CYL two years running I don't know if that counts. Really all the students are fairly popular in their own regard, so I guess I need to aim for the Church.
I'm gonna say Hanneman. It was him or Alois, and while I do like Alois and think he should be more popular (since he's the same level of exuberant goof that Gatekeeper is but actually a character), but I really like Hanneman and think people sleep on him because he's just like...the old guy researcher, and we have Linhardt who also does the Crest research thing but is a student. But Hanneman stands out to me a lot.
He's very similar to Linardt in that he's overly fixated on Crests, to the point he kinda forgets to manage his social graces. He takes his role seriously and is a bit of a nag, but at the same time kinda owns it. His supports with Gilbert ended really well in my mind, with Hanneman basically being like "And together our curmudgeonly powers will annoy all of the youth." I dunno, that's great. He's awkward and a bit of a goon and really into this one obscure topic, but he owns that and I love him for it.
And a lot of his supports I feel like showcase how good a teacher he is. He takes serious interest in his students and their lives, helps Linhard come to understand what he wants out of his research, helps Annette figure out what she wants to do after the war. His Crest research is a huge focus for him, and while he at times forgets to account for the person, he does seem to care about them, and always seems to re-frame things in a way to focus on the positive outcomes they can seek. He works with Lysithea on trying to figure out how to remove a Crest, with Marianne on expressing that her powers can be used for whatever she wishes. He's a generally kind, if socially inept, guy.
But the one that really stands out is Edelgard's support with him. They talk about crests in general, and how Edelgard's ambitions and his research must clash. Except...they play around that. Hanneman's goal is to find a way to provide Crests to anyone, which effectively has the same outcome as removing them; either way, the tie to bloodlines is gone. And his path has the value of actually working. Removing Crests won't remove the desire for their power, people would find another way. But a way to control them may have better results, at least for fading them from that relevance. In their final support, we also learn the ultimate reason why he seeks this outcome. His sister bore no Crest, was married to another noble whose influence was waning, and despite bearing many children, never produced a Crest. Between that and what's implied to be abuse from her husband, she died, and Hanneman holds a great deal of bitterness toward the nobility and to society's value of Crests. While he finds them fascinating, he doesn't want them to be something that determines the value of a life, and I think this contextualizes a lot of his other supports. He's so driven to get the knowledge he's after because of this personal loss and belief. But at the end of the day, he's doing this for people, not Crests, and deeply cares about how his research will effect the world. And I think that's really cool.

i just finished reading your unfocused analysis on el fans being mostly lgbt/queer and read all of the read more stuff too and FUCK that got me tearing up- i started with CF first as well cause i heard a lot about the BE house basically being the queer house lol, but as i was playing i was just struck by how everyone FELT like real people... being able to watch everyone bond through the guidance and support of byleth, my OWN influence directing this character, and then have all of our effort summarized in El saying "when humans stand together there is no need for gods" just hit me in that abused-by-christians queer kid kinda way, yknow? watching everyone bond and work through trauma, eventually surpasing byleth, this person with the god-like powers, in skill??? and in the end when byleth's heart beat for the first time i saw it as everyone taking byleth as a human now, accepting them for what they choose to be and not who they were forced to be and that hits in a DIFFERENT way entirely and i love it!!!
IT’S SO GOOD!!! YOU’RE SO RIGHT!!
I am relieved I went into this game blind, because I might’ve stumbled across some reductive Edelgard takes and missed out on my favourite character of all time. Crimson Flower is a queer narrative!! And then most of the bi romance options are Black Eagles, and it has a surprising amount of platonic m/f endings?? The FLAVOUR

Oh my gosh another queer linguist who loves fe3h? And one who makes incredibly detailed, on point analysis essays? *And* who likes CF and the Black Eagles the best? I love everything about this. 😭 I appreciate your existence so much.
Aw, this just made my day!! Thank you for your kind words!! 🥰
And yes, I did once type out every line of Petra dialogue in CF and analyzed it to determine if there were any specific patterns with her language use . . . we exist . . .
(for real though, this house is Targeted Content for linguists, tired queers, and theatre kids haha! I happen to be a combination of all three 😂Would've loved to see more about language in the game from other characters implied to have first languages other than Fódlandish)

show me the bisexual ikea couch and youve got yourself a deal my friend
Tumblr media
it's this lmao! the actual story behind it is that the artist used his personal experiences with biphobia when designing the couch but it doesn't read particularly well given the size + arrangement of the text. anyway the black eagles are bicons and I need one of them holding the "nobody believes you" cushion
