Can you elaborate on what you don't like in the pjo books?
Ok here is a list of random things I want to change for the adaptation. It's not full bc it's been a long time since I really really thought about these books, but it's long enough.
1) American Values Propaganda. USA is just as evil and filled with hate and propaganda as their enemies are, and these books really love to ignore that. I understand that it's weird to ask an American author not to be so American, but I am still allowed to be annoyed. Thankfully, the books are already critical of the the system and demand change, so it's not just pure brainwashing and can be easily fixed in the show just by removing certain sentences and paragraphs. This is one of the aspects where HOO did better than PJO, since they were much more divorced from ideals of Western civilization, so I'm hoping they bring that energy over into the adaptation.
2) How demigods influenced WWII. YOU KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT. We can just say that demigods supported both sides and the gods figured their kids were uncontrollable and thus made the Big Three Pact. I like smaller jokes about famous demigods like Houdini or whatever, but let's not turn the most well known men of history into magical campers pls.
3) 2000s era misogyny. This is a weird one because these books are pretty progressive on that front while also following the trends of the era??? Like, one of the main ideas of TTC is that men are raised on a system that encourages and rewards them for using women and how women shouldn't be blamed for making extreme choices to avoid it, but we STILL get a girlhating love triangle a book later. So yes, more of the first and less of the second please.
4) LUKE AND ANNABETH. What the FUCK was that. If I am forced to go through that again I will burn Disney down to the ground. So yeah make his love for her a purely brotherly one and her crush unrequited and we are chill and I'll def cry over them.
5) Writing shortcuts that are chill for a kids' book, but will be very annoying onscreen. I'm talking about how no one ever explains anything to Percy, how conversations sometimes feel written around a subject just so it can get explained at a later date, basically anything that is used to build suspense but also makes character seem very dumb and mean and unnatural.
6) To this day I do not understand what the relationship between Annabeth and her dad is supposed to make me feel. I like the concept of a character with a less-than-ideal home life who is still trying to make the best of it, but I just don't understand how bad it is supposed to be? I don't like the idea that she is only making it all up in her head, and the books sometimes agree, so what's the truth? Asking as a big fan of the "MC with a complicated relationship with their father" trope.
7) This is a minor one and makes me laugh more than anything, but maybe explain the incest thing BEFORE your main character has clearly fallen in love and started kissing the girl who appears to be his niece. Looking back it's hilarious how I didn't question it at all as a kid, but nowadays I'm p sure parents will get heart attacks if this isn't cleared up before s5.

Wait so genuine question: are all the ships in percy jackson incest? Because in a way they are all cousins right?
See that's the funny part: the characters looove referring to each other as "cousin" and "family" (well not their love interests, but everyone else is fair game), but it is specifically explained in canon that it isn't incest, and neither is Zeus and Hera bring siblings as well as spouses. You see, in PJO, gods have no DNA, so any magical data they transmit to their children creates a whole new combination of genes corresponding to the appearance the god wore in the moment of conception. That technically means that not even half-siblings are related to each other, so there is no real incest possible. BUT it is still seen as morally wrong to date your sibling due to societal rules.

im rereading percy jackson and im cracking the fuck up that a villain literally went "I HATE AUSTRALIA!!!" it was the Echidna Monster lady from the first book
Rereading PJO is just being hit in the face with how silly and ridiculous the entire concept of Greek mythology in 21st century is. Have fun!!

Huh. I never really thought about the age gap.
Honestly, my memory of PJO is pretty muddled since it's been so long since I've read the original series, but it always seemed like Luke was playing to Annabeth's feelings to sway her.
Like, kind of how you agree with a kid so they so they do what you want.
Yep, that would have made sense! I think her crush and how much he manipulates her is totally good in a cautionary tale sort of a way, so I hope they don't get rid of that aspect of their dynamic. But then there's that scene (when he's switched sides and has no need to manipulate her) where he asks her if she loved him romantically, and that one passage from a bonus story where it is explicitly stated he fell in love with her, so it all turns into "FBI OPEN UP" in the end

Right now im rereading percy jackson cuz of the casting and god... i missed it sm what a blast from the past. I forgot how much Percy was ready to throw hands with anything. How would u rank all the half bloods in PJO?
Fr, Percy was an angry icon and I love him for it. Glad you're having fun!
As for the ranking, I CAN'T RATE THEM A L L THERE'S LIKE A MILLION OF GODLY BASTARDS RUNNING AROUND THAT CAMP. I can tell you my favs are Percy, Thalia, and Annabeth, and my least fav is Luke.

would you recommend the pjo books to someone who didn’t grow up with the series (but loved stuff like hp growing up) and who is in their early twenties lol it really hypes me up when I see you gush about a series and I liked most things I got into because of you. aka is it too late for me
T.T PLS THIS IS TOO SWEET, I am glad my recs work for you! Now, as for PJO, I know that a ton of people got into it as adults, and the books are super short (at least the OG 5, which are the source of my gushing), so I think you have nothing to lose by trying them out. However, do be aware that they are very obviously middle grade books, and I can't confidently tell you I would have liked them as much if I hadn't been in the target audience when I started reading them

Oh my god the Luke liking Annabeth romantically thing was so weird. The seven year age gap!! So not cool what the heck was that
THAT WAS RICK RIORDAN YET AGAIN UNDERSELLING PLATONIC LOVE!!! Because you know, you can't really love someone enough to make it universe-changing unless you're in love with them. NOO we needed to have the twenty-three-year-old fall for a sixteen-year-old he'd known since she was 7 BECAUSE THAT WOULD MAKE US UNDERSTAND HIM AND THEIR AFFECTION BETTER

same anon as the "I HATE AUSTRALIA" percy jackson rereader - I've been wondering something: Should I reread heroes of olympus? I don't really remmeber much other than that I dropped one of the books because I got bored. Or should I stick with the Olympians?
I reread HoO ~2020 and I def recommend to stick to PJO. HoO sucks and it puts you in a bad mood right after the high of rereading the first series.

I've been scrolling down your old posts and I'm glad I'm not the only person who agrees Percy Jackson was wayy better than Heroes of Olympus, like, PJO had it all: compelling fleshed out villain, humour, action, strong plot, well-written characters: I feel like Rick was trying too hard with Heroes of Olympus to be honest
Yaa! PJO is the type of a kids series that I can still reread and enjoy. Truly the epitome of family entertainment. HoO makes me embarrassed to have ever loved it hfdnndndnsnsn

so we all know pjo is getting adapted for disney+ (money-hungry mouse corporation ew, but i trust rick), but apparently the kane chronicles is too but for netflix and that's gonna be awesome cos i've always thought that trilogy would work pretty well as a series . Strange though that they're part of the same universe, but will be adapted by different separate networks 🤔 makes me think how s&b and soc could've been separate things as well if the showrunners weren't so eager to change so much of the source (now people new to the gv will say "kaz from shadow & bone" and not "kaz from six of crows")
Yeah, I too find it interesting that Netflix seized one while Disney got the other. I don't like either company, but I'm sorta smug at the fact that Disney didn''t manage to grab the full set actually they probably weren't even interested since it's about Egyptian gods with POC leads ayooooooo, and I'm looking forward to how it plays out! And yes I'll forever mourn the fact that they merged the two...... justice for Crows.....

hello i’m a follower from your instagram and i came across your thoughts on HOO and i just wanna say i completely agree 😭 i just never figured out why i didn’t love HOO as much as PJO, but you put it into words.. the seven never really felt like close friends... they were sort of separated into little squads based on how close they were to each person . somehow, i preferred the trio of reyna, nico, and coach hedge the best (and no one here is even a member of the seven). i used to ship caleo too just because leo was my favorite, but he really should not have ended up with anyone and could’ve found happiness without a love interest. rick probably just went with it because of the early 2010s shipping culture.
i feel like rick could’ve succeeded in the found family trope within a number of five books, but the first two books kind of.. robbed that opportunity (though SoN was my favorite among them) then, blood of olympus just confused me .
Ayyy!!!! You're totally right, RR had the opportunity to give us great found family between 7 characters, 5 of them new additions to the series, but he just decided to prioritize romance instead and just forget to develop any other type of a relationship after SoN gave us precious Hazel-Percy-Frank fam :/// It is so obvious that the series is the product of early 2010s, we had like 10 love triangles in there sbvkavbksabvjkbajk

my mentor from the music group I enjoyed recently (technically, he is my "godfather" but since he's barely four years older than me and it's for the music thing, i refer to him as mentor) just told that he absolutely loves the Percy Jackson series...
...more specifically, the movies...
...I think it's safe to say that after a horroried gasp, half an hour talk of mythology and the PJ book series, i now finally know what to give him for Christmas...
(He doesn't read much fiction, prefers philosofical books, but when I checked, there was a sale for the books and, besides, none one can resist my puppies and I wouldn't forgivve myself if I had the chance but didn't get to make him read the books)
Wish me luck!
AwwwWWW GOOD LUCK!!!! Let's hope he learns of the true potential of PJO

Do you not like hoh percabeth though?
The combination of knowing none of it will have any impact on them and that ugly comment between Annabeth and Reyna at the end of the book sorta spoiled it for me...

hello! first of all, the shadow and bone liveblog is a pleasure to see on the dash! i love seeing the people i follow enjoying themselves and being passionate even when it's about things i don't know :3 (and it reminded that i have a copy of six of crowns i haven't started reading yet! i have too many unread books u_u")
so, i am currently re-reading pjo/hoo/toa and i had a thought, after reading a post on my dash about the mcu -- basically, i think that the problem with the camp half-blood chronicles is that it is a too vast and disconnected book franchise, kind in the same way as marvel's cinematic universe, with no time gaps between each cycle, which doesn't give space for the decisions taken to have long term consequences, and doesn't manage to get the stakes actually higher (especially in toa).
and i was wondering if it was something you felt as well when reading these hoo and toa ? (there's also the fact that he didn't put as much work in the characters of these series than he did with pjo, which makes their arcs less solid and clearly inconsistent) ...... i thought authors usually had their writing improving with the time, but with rick, it's apparently not the case.......
Awwww thanks!!! Good luck with your TRL hehe
Oh, that’s a good point! Yeah, it absolutely feels that way. PJO was incredibly solid for a middle grade book series, The Kane Chronicles did great to hold up since it was technically the same universe, but with almost no shared characters... and then it all went to crap. The characters had no proper arc conclusions to speak of, because they were getting prepared for the next story all the time. The books just became a soulless brand. How very Disney of them

oh what you didn't like magnus chase? 😮 that was surprisingly my favorite series by rick 😭 but i definitely do see the flaws of the trilogy. i read a negative review once where they said it was difficult to distinguish percy's narration from magnus's because of the typical sarcastic attitude and dry humor (as well as the particular affinity for a type of food), so it was as if rick was just recycling. and while he did include a lot more diversity, it wasn't particularly well-done nor researched thoroughly, though i'm sure he didn't intend it (i still love the characters though!) (some parts, you do forget magnus is actually annabeth's cousin, and aaaa as much as i hate to say it, magnus relatively isn't as memorable as rick's other mc's 😭)
You do you, everyone enjoys different things! Honestly, I adore PJO and it's still one of my fav series, The Kane Chronicles were also fun, but everything else is a miss for me. I have spoken on it before so I won't be rehashing old statements but it can all be reduced to two points: 1) Rick discovered a formula and decided to stick to it, creating episodic books that lacked PJO's overarching themes (which made the monster-of-the-week format more fun) and thus started blurring together, and 2) his new aesthetic relied on things he didn't do his research on.
