"okay, that's all for today guys! don't forget to come early tomorrow, we can't waste time!"
you let out a big sigh the second those words passed through your ears, you were tired, sleepy and the long practice was finally over, today you tried so much harder than usual and you could feel how your legs burned with every movement you made, all you wanted was to be in the comfort of your bed, even if it meant that when you got up your legs would shake.
from being relieved now you wanted to rip your ears off, you could hear how a small group of girls who were next to you didn't stop talking about how "beautiful" the boy who made your days a nightmare was. you just rolled your eyes in disgust, you didn't even know what they saw in him, he was arrogant, selfish, greedy, stupid and above all he had a bad temper, you weren't surprised to know that he had no friends when he treated everyone in an inferior way believing that he was better than the rest, who would want to be close to someone like him?
definitely not you, you couldn't even think of him as someone attractive when his personality already said everything about him as a person and didn't let you see beyond his frown that was furrowed 24 hours a day, the only times you could see him smile was when he beat you in some competition by making fun of you and you just wanted to erase any trace of happiness in him as if he were a picture of a fresh painting. not in a thousand years you could see yourself being friends with him, much less knowing all the things he said and did to you for the last 10 years.
while you were waiting for the rest of your teammates to leave the ice rink, your body almost ended up on the ground, you could feel someone bumping your shoulder sharply, causing you to almost lose your balance.
you turned to see who it was, and sure enough it was park sunghoon.
you cursed under your breath when you saw that arrogant smile of his peek over the edge of his lips, it was as if he had been listening to your thoughts all this time and wanted to take revenge, your friend yuna who was only a few meters from you watching everything could only laugh while covering her mouth. you had forgotten that you always had to be alert when you were around him.
you were about to say something to him but your coach's hand on your shoulder stopped you.
"hey i know you're tired but tomorrow you can stay up late training? i want to focus on you and sunghoon." if just the presence of him already put you in a bad mood, having to spend more time with him only made you want to drop off the earth.
"with sunghoon? is it really necessary?" you wanted him to be joking, you wanted to refuse, no matter what reasons mr. choi had for holding you back to share the same air as him.
"yes, you know that the olympics are close, i want to make sure that their routines are as perfect as possible," you let out another long sigh, turning your gaze towards yuna who was looking at you confused "i know that your relationship is not the best but you don't even have to speak, i will make you work until exhaustion and you know it. i only want the best for both and ensure that you win a medal, do not forget that you will be representing the republic of korea and that it is also one of your dreams, i'm doing this only for you."
and there was his speech again, you were tired of hearing it but as much as you hated the idea you knew he was right, besides for nothing in the world would you let someone like sunghoon ruin your chance to go to the olympics.
you will work hard, do better than him and win the gold medal. you wouldn't let him beat you.
"okay." your coach's smile lit up his face completely. when it came to skating he could be very tough but you knew he had a big heart, he was like your second father, after all you knew him since you were six years old.
"i'm happy to hear that, then i'll see you tomorrow." he gave a gentle squeeze on your shoulder and you just smiled back.
"what was that?" yuna was almost on top of your body waiting for an answer while you took off your skates.
"nothing, it's just that it seems that for the next few months i will have to spend more hours with sunghoon," you frowned "and every day, as if seeing him three times a week wasn't enough." you jerked your skates away but instantly regretted it, you didn't want them to be ruined.
yuna placed her finger between your eyebrows "you're going to get wrinkles," you couldn't help but giggle "and why are you so mad anyway? remember that this is not about sunghoon but about you and the olympics. i know that you will do great and win a medal."
"i guess you're right," you got up ready to go, with yuna walking by your side "and by medal you mean the gold one right?" you were joking but seeing that she was silent you hit her shoulder playfully "i can't believe that you are like my best friend and you are on his side." you put a hand on your chest pretending to be hurt.
she just laughed "i'm not! but you can't deny that he's pretty good too, you're not called the ice prince and princess for nothing. it's still hard to say who's better and anyone can win."
"yeah whatever you say, but i'm still better." you laughed but you couldn't help but feel some jealousy and insecurity.
you could see sunghoon talking to the coach in a corner, after all it wasn't the first time he beat you. you wrinkled your nose and went on your way, you didn't want to think about him anymore when you were more than sure that the following weeks would be insufferable, you had better things to do than think about him and his stupid face, just like how to improve your routine.
you were going to do your best, you just hoped you could beat him this time.
—
"just focus, try to do it one more time."
you bit your lip as you got up from the floor in frustration after falling for the fourth time trying to do a triple axel. you were angry, angry with yourself, with your coach, with sunghoon who kept sneering silently every time you made a mistake, you were angry with everything. and embarrassed too.
it was ridiculous that now you didn't get that jump when you had done it thousands of times before without problems, you didn't know what was wrong with you that day but you just wanted to do it right so you could stay calm, to stop tormenting your mind with the olympics and in the thousands of mistakes you could make when you were there.
you took a deep breath as you skated around the rink with your eyes closed trying to gain some confidence, muttering words of encouragement to yourself, preparing to do it one more time. you ignored everything around you, you forgot mr choi's expectant look and sunghoon's teasing one, you silenced the voices in your head and tried. it was only you
but you failed again.
"okay, that's enough." mr choi looked disappointed and couldn't even look you in the face but you didn't blame him, you couldn't do it either, the olympics were close and you were already doing everything wrong from day one. you weren't even able to show him your entire routine because you kept making silly mistakes.
you could hear sunghoon's bitter laugh in the distance "i don't even know why you focus so much on her and have so much faith when she can't even do a simple triple axel," you looked him in the eyes wanting to kill him and wishing he would shut his mouth "why is she going to the olympics with me anyway? she will never be good enough." his smirk just made you want to punch him in the face.
"sunghoon." the coach called his name with a frown, he was upset and he knew it but still didn't care, he just shrugged his shoulders pretending "stop talking, it's your turn."
tears threatened to come out of your eyes, you just sat waiting for sunghoon to finish so you could try a few more times, you closed your eyes and covered them with your hands, you didn't even want to see how he did everything perfectly, you tried to review in your mind everything you have prepared so far, but your plans are ruined when mr. choi sits next to you.
"you can go home for today," you could feel how the air left your lungs, you wanted to refuse but he kept talking "i know what you're going to tell me but the answer is no, it's clear that this is not your day, you aren't well and you have to rest because if you go there again," his finger pointed the ice rink "and you fall, you could hurt yourself and i'm sure you don't want that." he crossed his arms over his chest, waiting for you to say something but you just stayed silent looking down "look, we still have a lot of time to train, but i want you to be focused for next time, okay? we can't work like this, come tomorrow with a cool head." his cold expression changed to a softer one as soon as he caressed your hair "and don't pay attention to what sunghoon says."
your throat was closed due to the force you exerted to avoid crying preventing you from speaking, you wanted to thank him for everything but you couldn't, although you were sure he knew it.
you focused on the last thing he said to you, you were already used to sunghoon's words but that didn't mean they couldn't hurt you, they cut deep and stayed with you, you focused your gaze on him but it only made you feel worse, you hated the way he could do everything effortlessly, he aced every move, he didn't need to do much because his presence already lit up the whole place.
ever since you can remember sunghoon was like that, he had an innate talent and you were always jealous for that, he was born with a gift and you had to work hard every day to even be able to be at his level, you wanted to curse him for that.
you remembered his words from a few seconds ago, you couldn't even clearly remember why it all started.
but you hated park sunghoon.
and he hated you too.
it was nothing new for the people who knew you, it was already well known that the two of you were always competitive with each other and that you tried to be better than everyone else, all that rivalry had started when you were kids and after years it still wasn't over, it was ridiculous but it seemed to have no end.
how you wished sunghoon would fall or make some mistake so you could make fun of him the same way he made fun of you, but that didn't seem to happen anytime soon. it was stupid to deny how good he was, you could rarely see him do anything wrong and for that reason it only embarrassed you more that you couldn't get a jump you had been doing for years, sunghoon had improved a lot in a few months and you felt like you were still stuck in the same level since you are 17 years old.
you wanted to laugh when you remembered that time you tried to be friends with him at 9 years old because you had been put together for a routine, everything had started well, both were shy so you didn't talk much at first but you already admired him because you used to see him from afar.
but because of a bad move you started yelling at each other.
sunghoon was rubbing his elbow with a pained expression on his face "it's all your fault! you don't know how to skate" you already apologized and were waiting for him to do the same because you hurt your knee, but instead he just blamed you everything and stuck his tongue out at you, and that was something you couldn't tolerate.
"liar! you're the one who made us fall!" watching two little kids fight could be fun, but his coach was quick to join you to stop the yelling.
"hey, it's okay, don't fight, we're all friends and these mistakes can happen, right? now i want you to apologize." she held you both by the shoulder and brought you closer so you were face to face "come on, what are you waiting for?"
"i already apologized and he was rude." you couldn't get the frown off your face and for nothing in the world would you apologize again.
"that's a lie." sunghoon just stuck his tongue out at you again and by that time you were already crying. you hated when people were mean to you.
"dumb!" maybe you shouldn't have said that, but it was too late.
"stop crying, you look ugly!"
that afternoon, in fact, you couldn't stop crying and your parents had to pick you up to take you home, you didn't want to go for a few days but you decided you wouldn't let a silly kid ruin your fun. and since then sunghoon always made fun of you at every chance he got, he even gave you the nickname "cry baby" even though you never stood idly by and that was just another reason for things between you to get worse. you still remember like it was yesterday when he told you that you would never become good figure skater even if you practiced your whole life.
you didn't even remember how it had been or if it was really his fault that you fell, but the fact is that everything had started because he didn't want to apologize and was rude to you, you used to be a very sensitive kid so you still had a grudge against him.
you were very different, sunghoon was someone cold, selfish and very hard on himself too, while for your part you were very different from him you always found the bright side of things, you helped your teammates no matter what and you enjoyed what you did, you could never understand him no matter how hard you tried, you were more than sure that he was an insensitive and heartless boy.
yeah, you hated park sunghoon.
—
it's been 2 weeks and you're still staying up late with sunghoon to train, there were other competitions coming up but you two were the stars for the olympics.
you were doing better every time, and he was not far behind.
you hated to admit it but he was good. he was so freaking good.
the way he moves is captivating, you could spend hours just watching him move, he was delicate but precise and marked his movements well at the same time, the elegance and beauty of the sport is portrayed in every aspect of him when he's on the ice, he was definitely made for it.
but you didn't except less, after all he was your competition for a reason.
his routine was too good, but you had confidence in yourself and that yours was even better, you would not let something similar to happen a few years ago, when they chose him over you for almost all the competitions they had to represent to the republic of korea, that was your last straw. you still remember crying almost every night because of it.
"excuse me guys, i have a call and i have to answer." you just nodded and kept looking at sunghoon.
he took advantage of that moment to start practicing his quad axel, ever since he saw his biggest idol do it he became obsessed with the idea that he could do it too, mr. choi always scolded him because it was a very dangerous jump and he could get hurt by whatever mistake he made, but he was stubborn and kept trying anyway but you weren't surprised, knowing his personality you were sure he thought he was better than the rest and it wouldn't take him long to handle it perfectly.
you looked to the side for a second diverting your attention from him and a loud noise made you turn back to him almost instantly, sunghoon was on the floor and you just hissed because it was sure painful "better luck next time!" you yelled at him as you saw how he turned around floor.
you brushed him off and just got ready to enter the ice rink, but he wasn't moving an inch and had his face hidden in his arms.
"sunghoon what the hell are you doing? get out so i can practice, you're on the way." you snorted. you thought he was faking it but it took you a couple of seconds to realize he wasn't.
ignoring the voices in your head you quickly approach him, kneeling beside him, you see how his knuckles were white from squeezing his hands so much. you didn't know what to do, he hurted himself? should you tell him something? help him up? call mr choi? all thought left your head the moment sunghoon's eyes collided with yours, they were red and his cheeks were wet with traces of tears, his brow was furrowed and his lip had a small trace of blood from how strong he had been biting all that time.
and you didn't like the feeling of your stomach wanting to come out of your mouth.
"get the fuck off." you didn't realize your hand was so close to his body until he pushed it away. you tried to ignore him and want to help him but he didn't even let you speak "where's mr. choi?"
"i don't know." you walked away from him, not wanting to deal with his bad mood any longer and call mr. choi to take care of him instead.
you saw him struggle to get up, but as soon as he wanted to rest his body on his right leg it vanished almost instantly, he threw a curse into the air. the great park sunghoon, the ice prince, lying on the ground crying from a silly fall? you could only think how pathetic he looked at that moment.
"stop doing that, god you look so stupid, i will just call an ambulance or something." you didn't even really know what you were supposed to do.
the only reason you wanted to use your phone was so you could take a picture of him without him noticing and make fun of it for all eternity. you knew that he was embarrassed by his photos of when he was a child that still circulated on the internet, so this was the perfect opportunity to have a good laugh every time you entered any social media, seeing him so vulnerable just gave you infinite ideas. but you didn't do any of them, and you weren't sure if he would have done the same to you.
"just call mr. choi, i don't need you." he ran his hands over his face and pulled at his hair in frustration.
"can you shut up? i'm trying to be nice, you know i could just leave you lying here suffering because you're an idiot who doesn't know his limits and doesn't accept help, right?" maybe you should have done what he told you instead of continuing to embitter your existence with his presence.
"did i ever ask you to come help me? stop acting like you're good now, i don't need your stupid pity and much less your help, i'd rather break my ankle than be another second near you." you were more than grateful that those feelings were mutual, you were just wasting your time trying to be nice to him.
and so you confirmed once again that you hated him.
but that annoying sensation didn't leave your chest, you hated sunghoon but you hated even more that feeling that you never felt for him invade your body before. was it pity? you were sure it was, it must also be the nerves of the moment. and you couldn't sit idly by, you didn't even know where mr. choi had gone, if you just left him alone there you wouldn't be much better than him.
and you don't want to be someone like him.
"well the thing is you probably did break your ankle." the look he gave you almost made you back away from him, you've never seen so many emotions run through someone's orbs before and it was overwhelming.
you didn't want to keep looking at him because of how uncomfortable you were starting to feel so you turned around looking for mr. choi, you didn't want to be there anymore, but you couldn't even get 2 meters away from him when he finally appeared.
"what happened?" his voice sounded scared, terrified. he hurriedly approached sunghoon and wasted no time taking off his skate and seeing the state of his body, you walked away while listening to his moans of pain. this was none of your business "y/n i already called an ambulance, you go with him i will follow you with my car behind."
"what?" you opened your eyes wanting to believe that you heard wrong, but mr. choi repeated it to you loud and clear "but-"
"no excuses now."
you couldn't say another word. everything had happened very quickly, you didn't even remember if it was your body that moved on its own but you were already in the back of the ambulance next to sunghoon. you wanted to die.
both are wrapped in a silence that surpassed the uncomfortable, the tension could be counted with just a knife no matter how sharp it was, you keep looking everywhere avoiding his eyes.
"you need to tell your family." you didn't realize those words came out of your mouth instead of staying in your head.
"i don't have my phone." his eyes closed and you had barely heard him speak.
"i'll call them for you, i just need you to give me a number."
"no you won't, god stop being so annoying, just let mr. choi take care of everything." and there was his annoyed expression again, you were already surprised to see him calm for so long.
you wanted to say so many things at that time, but not a single sound left your lips just out of pity.
you made a little mental note to yourself that this would be the first and last time you would try to help park sunghoon.
—
the atmosphere was tense, you felt how simply the air from those four walls crushed your body and cut the air from your lungs, your head was heavy and the vision in your eyes became blurred over time because you had only been looking at the same spot in the floor for the last 10 minutes.
you never felt that time passed as slowly as it does now.
you just wanted mr. choi to finish talking to the doctor and finish all his calls so you could tell him that you would leave that place to go home, if you spent just one more second next to sunghoon you would feel how your lungs would become intoxicated.
and he felt the same as you, it was uncomfortable having your presence so close and that neither said anything knowing that a single comment would be like dropping a bomb, and both knew that the damage it would leave couldn't be repaired.
but there you were, opening your big, silly mouth, unable to contain yourself "how do you feel?"
"are you seriously asking me that?" you rolled your eyes for the sixth time that day at his response, at least you no longer felt your throat burn.
"yes, that's what i just did, are you deaf?" you spat out your words
sunghoon's mood wasn't the best, it never was, and with everything he was feeling at the time, your words and your mere presence were enough to make him explode.
"god, can you just leave me alone and get the fuck out of here!? why would i want someone as useless as you here? i'm sick of you, you're not good at skating or doing whatever it is you want to do now! we're not friends and never will be don't even try it, get that into that head of yours at least that's how you use it for something, i don't even know why you're still here when all you do is sulk me up and be a nuisance here." his finger was pointing at you, his body moving closer to yours with every word he spat hatefully in your face and neither of you broke eye contact.
it was pathetic how his words still had such an effect on you, he meant nothing to you so why did it hurt so much? why did you want to cry and yell in his face for him to shut up? why did your body feel so weak, as if your knees would lose strength if you kept looking into his eyes?
for almost all your life you had to put up with his insults and mistreatment, you were sick of it, you didn't want to keep quiet anymore, he even screwed up your mind making you believe thousands of times that you could never be a good skater knowing how much it affected you and how much it meant to you, you both shared the same passion so what was his problem? every day you wished you had never met him.
you would travel to the past a million times changing the timeline as much as necessary to avoid meeting him, to avoid knowing his name that consumed so much time and energy, to avoid feeling the way you did now.
"fuck you sunghoon, you've been acting like a fucking idiot when all i wanted to do was help you! you're a selfish bastard who just likes to suck the life out of people, you can't and don't have the right to treat me like shit just because you want to, i'm tired of you and you know what? i'm thankful that you injured your ankle and you can't go to the olympics now because it was your big dream, right? well that's a shame because you really deserved it and i really hope you never get to skate again!"
you would go back in time to avoid becoming someone heartless like him who didn't measure his words and only spoke with the intention of hurting all the people around him.
your heart was threatening to burst out of its cage in the rage of the moment. those words came from the depths of you, you knew that everything you said was wrong but you didn't regret it, at least you no longer felt that annoying weight on your chest.
"hey why are you guys yelling so much? we're in a hospital." the moment mr. choi's voice reached your ears was when you finally looked away from sunghoon's eyes.
"get out." his voice came out weaker than before, you couldn't see him in the face, you wanted to give him the pleasure of seeing you doing something he asked you after so long and you just walked out of there without saying anything.
you did it, you really made the effort to get along with him not just once but twice already but now you regret even thinking about it in the first place, so many years had passed and you didn't know why you thought maybe he had changed.
—
you closed your eyes tightly in the hope that it would help you become invisible to mr. choi.
you knew that when he approached you with that look it was to ask you for something you didn't like. and you knew that it only meant one thing; park sunghoon.
"you don't know anything about him?" you looked at him with tired eyes, although you could understand his concern, what happened to him had nothing to do with you.
"no, why should i know?" you wanted to hit yourself when you noticed how rude those words had come out, he didn't have to pay for your bad mood in the last few days.
the words of the famous ice prince wouldn't leave your head and they didn't seem to want to do it soon either, you couldn't skate in peace thinking that maybe you could fall like him or remembering all the times he told you that you would never be a good skater, or that all your routines were mediocre.
you hated that despite not seeing him these days you still felt his shadow behind you in everything you did once you entered the ice rink, as if he were saying those cruel words in your ear all the time.
"great, because i need you to take the stuff he left here when he got injured, i would but..." he didn't continue saying anything else, you sighed when you thought that maybe he was doing all that on purpose, after all it wasn't the first time he did something like this so that you two would get along.
your silence was an affirmative answer for him, so he went to look for the bags and the skates, which was probably what he left behind. you turned your head finding yuna, instantly begging her with your eyes to come with you.
"don't even think about it." she turned her back on you starting to walk in the opposite direction and you already had your arms holding her against your body.
"please, please, don't leave me alone in this," you said in a whimper, your words muffled against her back, you didn't want to get your face out of there until she said yes "did you forget all the things i did for you?"
you thought you could easily manipulate her but she knew you too well for your liking "as much as i love you, it's not in my plans to go to his house, much less with you knowing what happened the last time you saw each other" you didn't want that either, go to sunghoon's house and alone? not even in dreams.
and in a blink there you were, in front of the door of his house.
completely alone.
on the way there all you did was curse yuna for letting you go to that hell alone and you cursed sunghoon too by the way because there was never a bad time to do it. why didn't he go get his things? or his parents?
the neighbors probably thought you were a freak for standing there for more than 5 minutes without even moving a bit. you had to work up the strength to see him and not shoot him with the first thing in your hand.
you gathered your strength and lifting your chest like a dove, you rang the doorbell praying that anyone but him would open it.
but your prayers were in vain when his weary face with dark circles under his eyes and crutches on both sides of his body were the first thing you saw.
you didn't even know what to say or do, your eyes widened in surprise, ever since you met him there wasn't a single time you saw him in such a... unfortunate state, his face was always perfect and groomed, you were sure he would always took the necessary time to look good at any time and especially in his presentations that finding any imperfection on his face was like looking for a needle in a haystack. you couldn't help but feel bad for him, he looked as if he had spent the whole night crying and only now was getting up from his depressive nest. you knew it because you were like that before and you weren't proud of it.
the sudden breeze hitting your face snaps you out of your thoughts, sunghoon had slammed the door in your face without saying anything and didn't even give you a chance to speak. you couldn't believe it, he was acting like a capricious child, you opened your mouth to yell at him but you just threw his things on the floor in anger not caring what was inside and you were ready to walk away, but a soft voice at your back stopped all your movements.
"oh, i'm so sorry! please excuse my son, he never behaves like that." you wanted to laugh at that, if only she knew.
ignoring that, you focused on her, you couldn't deny that her eyes and her black hair hypnotized you for a few seconds, it wasn't the first time you saw sunghoon's mother but the first time you were so close to her. the two of them were almost the same in appearance but from a distance you could already tell that she was much sweeter than him.
"it's okay, i just came to drop off the bags that he left behind the other day." your cheeks turned red at how soft your voice became.
"thank you so much and i'm sorry for the inconvenience, we couldn't find time to go look for them ourselves." she took the bags in her hands and started to go into the house, you thought she was going to say goodbye to you "please come in!" and you were wrong.
"but mom-" all that time sunghoon was behind her and only now did you notice.
"you just go in and stay there, i'll talk to you later." although she said it as low as possible just for him to hear it also reached your ears and you couldn't help but giggle, not even sunghoon's gaze could shut you up, but his mother turning to see you again did "please join us, we were about to have dinner as a family."
"oh no! no need-"
"please! you took the trouble to come here and you need to eat something, take it as an apology," you wanted to say no again, make up some excuse, any would be fine but the look in her eyes won you over and now you were standing awkwardly inside their house while you waited for mrs. park to close the door behind you "sunghoon take this to your room."
the expression he put on seemed amused, he made you want to laugh again, probably because it seemed like his room was upstairs and he, well... had crutches.
his mother disappeared from your sight and if before you were uncomfortable now with sunghoon by your side it was much worse.
"can you- uh, can you help me?" him asking you for help was the last thing you expected.
you hesitated, you didn't want to do it you still couldn't forget everything he told you days ago and that still hurt your chest when you remembered it, you wanted to see him fight to be able to carry the bags by himself and if it was possible that his ankle would hurt even more, you wanted to be just as shitty as him and tell him to his face all the things you still had saved.
but you couldn't.
you couldn't afford to stoop that low just because you were hurt, he needed your help so you would just do it. in complete silence you grabbed the largest bag and started to climb the stairs, you had to wait at the top of them for him to come to your side and tell you where to leave it, on that small path you couldn't help but look around you, it was full of family pictures and you noticed that downstairs there was a special place with all the medals and trophies sunghoon had won since he was a kid, up here there were a lot of pictures of him since he was practically a baby, you weren't that surprised because after all you knew each other since you were 6 years old and you still remembered how he looked at that time and he hadn't changed that much since then.
but what did surprise you was seeing his smile in all the photos, when you saw him he rarely smiled and in that hallway all the happiness and love he felt for figure skating was captured, something you had never seen in all the time that you knew him, he was always a private person so he probably only showed himself that way to his family, but it was reassuring to see that he wasn't always the moody guy who seemed to hate everyone and life itself.
"you can leave it here." you had been so immersed looking at the photos that you didn't notice sunghoon in front of the door of his room. you were surprised again to see that he wasn't so
cold. there were posters of his favorite skaters and probably his favorite bands, plus there were a few stuffed animals lying around as well.
sunghoon's mother's voice calling both of you from downstairs made you remember that now you had to have dinner with his family, your hands were shaking and he noticed that "don't be nervous, they aren't going to bite you." you snorted, wanting to kick one of their crutches out of sight.
"just shut up, I shouldn't even be here right now."
"hey be more respectful, be grateful that my family wants to have someone like you in our house, if it were up to me I wouldn't even have opened the door for you." you just ignored him and left his room, but the moment you were downstairs again the nerves consumed your body.
"come on sweetie, dinner is ready." mrs. park caressed your shoulder affectionately and led you to the table where there were already two other people, you quickly bowed.
contrary to what you thought, the conversation with his family was really nice they made an effort to make you feel at home and you appreciated that, although at first it was a bit awkward and it seemed that they asked you questions as if you were sunghoon's partner, you were able to talk with them as if you had known them all your life, his mother and sister were some of the sweetest people you have met so far, his father didn't speak much but still congratulated you as if you were his own daughter when you started talking about your achievements on the ice rink.
sunghoon didn't even speak to you the whole night, although most of the conversation was focused on you he managed to act as if you didn't exist, when he talked to his family he seemed like a completely different person from the one you knew, the tone of his voice was much softer with them and he laughed more often, you were sure his giggles would stay in your mind for a long time because as much as you hated to admit it, he was adorable.
that night something in your head changed, your perception of him still hadn't changed that much, his family was still much nicer than him however ignoring that you always thought he was someone arrogant who didn't care if he was the best or not because just it came naturally to him and he was unable to empathize with or care for anyone other than himself.
but maybe you were wrong.
he was still a jerk to you, but you got to know a part of him you didn't know existed.
—
"thank you so much for everything." you lost count of the times you bowed and thanked for everything.
"you can always come back whenever you want darling, next time I can make you your favorite food," you smiled at her, ready to go "are you going alone? It's quite late already sunghoon can accompany you so you don't go alone."
you wanted to throw up at that thought, you tried to say different excuses but none had convinced mrs. park enough to let you walk alone late at night, so the three of you agreed that it would only be a few blocks.
you were convinced that the awkward atmosphere between you whenever you were alone would never leave, you wanted that moment to end quickly but considering that he can't even walk properly it was kind of hard.
you had been walking side by side for several minutes in complete silence, you bit your lip as you watched the stars in the sky to distract yourself.
"my doctor said that I can skate again without much effort," he spoke out of the blue and you just left him, at least he had broken the silence "I won't be able to go to the olympics but at least it's not so bad that it leaves me without skating for the rest of my life."
you knew he was saying that because of what you told him that time in the hospital, you hesitated to apologize, you remembered the moment from years ago but you were no longer children and you had to be responsible for your words, after all you couldn't hold a grudge all your life.
"I'm sorry."
he shook his head denying "you have nothing to apologize for, that should be me."
"what?" you couldn't believe that, park sunghoon apologizing? you wanted to pinch yourself to make sure you weren't imagining it "you're apologizing because your mother asked you to, right?" you wanted to make fun of him because you didn't think his attempted apology was sincere, but his words silenced you.
"look, I'm only going to say this once," you had both stopped walking and now you were looking into each other's eyes, you had never paid them as much attention as now, he swallowed before speaking "I'm really sorry."
you didn't know what to say, your body went still and the words disappeared from your head, you realized how hard it had been for him to blurt out those words and part of it was funny, but on the other hand you couldn't stop thinking about the fact that he apologized to you. after years—after having said so many horrible things, this was the first time that you both let your true feelings show and were vulnerable.
you were both sorry and you noticed it.
both look into each other's eyes for a while longer until he finally leaves greeting you with a slight nod, leaving you stunned in the middle of the night, with the stars as the only witness of that rare moment.
maybe your perception of him had changed that day after all.
—
it had been almost 3 weeks since that little conversation you had and you haven't heard from him since.
for some reason now your mind felt more relaxed and you were able to feel freer with your movements, now you did everything 10 times better than before.
except today you seemed to have a problem again, you had been trying to do a toe loop for several minutes but you always landed wrong or didn't complete all the laps, you were already starting to get frustrated and mr choi didn't seem to be around at the time.
"you're doing it wrong." a soft voice behind you makes you turn your body almost completely towards him.
"what are you doing here?" It was the first thing that came out of your mouth when you saw him enter the ice rink.
"skating" he left without bothering to look at you and you sighed once more, it would always be difficult trying to talk to him, especially knowing the kind of complicated relationship you still had. not that you had become the best of friends for an apology.
but at least you were relieved that his ankle was okay, you still felt bad about what you told him at the hospital. although you couldn't stop thinking about the idea that this would be a chance to win because it left your way clear.
you tried it one more time, with the small big difference that when you landed sunghoon's hands were on you, you shivered when you felt the contact of his skin on your waist.
"you keep doing it wrong." you saw his smirk, surely he was making fun of you.
"I know." you wanted to walk away from the uncomfortable feeling of your heart starting to beat faster but his grip only tightened.
"yeah but you're not doing anything to fix it, you keep making the same mistake over and over again." feeling his breath against your neck sent shivers down your spine.
"what do you want?" you pushed his hands away from you more roughly than you meant to. now you were seeing each other face to face.
sunghoon rolled his eyes "nothing, I just want to help you" you narrowed your eyes, not fully believing in his words "you have to lift your chest more, you're very hunched over and you're just going to end up hurting yourself." he showed with his body how you had been doing it, giving you a quizzical look for not knowing something so simple "try again now."
you snorted but you listened to what he said, you did the same as before only changing your posture a little. and to your surprise you were able to achieve it perfectly.
"see? I told you." today he was very smiling, it was rare to see him like that.
"thanks but what are you? are you trying to be my trainer now?"
"so what if I want to be?" your body stopped moving just to look at him incredulously and instantly a big laugh came out of his mouth.
"what is so funny?"
"your faces," it took him a couple of seconds to calm down, by the time he finished he was on his knee while the other held his stomach "I'm serious, after all I won't be able to compete and you're the only one good enough out of here that can win, I won't let you lose just because you can't do a dumb toe loop."
he just said you were good? even though you thought the idea of him was a bit stupid, you could feel how all the heat of your body was concentrated in your cheeks dyeing them red, why was he being nice to you so suddenly? did he forget all the things you said to each other? surely the blow he took made him dumber than he already was.
you could hear him laugh again "shut up."
—
"what, are you two a couple now?" you thought that that day would be quiet, but yuna had other plans for you.
"what are you talking about?" you complained, still sleepy on your body.
"don't look at me like that, a few weeks ago I could have sworn you guys were about to kill each other but now you're close together, what with the "you're doing it wrong, let me help you" bullshit just to hold your waist? because you were doing it perfect." she couldn't believe it.
"stop saying nonsense, i guess he just feel bad cause he can't skate at the olympics now, he's just helping me."
yuna rolled her eyes "if you say so."
she walks away leaving you alone with your thoughts, and you didn't like the feeling in your stomach.
despite having refused his proposal about 10 times, sunghoon ended up convincing you and whenever he could he helped you although it wasn't much since you were good enough at what you did, you had been spending time together at the ice rink for several days and surprisingly you didn't insult each other even once. or well, he hadn't insulted you because you had already lost count of the things you said to him for purposely tripping you up a couple of times. and now you find yourself enjoying his company, something you never thought was possible before, you two were still very different but you had found a way to be together without bumping into each other so much and it was through skating, both of you loved it so much that you began to get along little by little just because of that.
"you're fine, I know you'll be able to do it perfectly there, just try not to do the quad axel." If you had been told a few months ago that you would be laughing with sunghoon today while sharing a drink he bought for you, you would have laughed on their faces as loud as ever.
leaving that aside, you noticed him a little more discouraged than usual today, there were times when you saw him totally immersed in his thoughts or you had to repeat things twice when you spoke to him "is something wrong? I notice that you're distracted."
"I'm just thinking about you." you almost choked on the bottle of soda you were drinking, your stomach started to feel weird and your breathing was ragged.
"what?" you turned your face while touching your cheeks, noticing that they were hot, it was embarrassing and he just laughs.
"I'm sorry, what I mean is that- I'm really sorry" he looks into your eyes intensely and your whole body trembles at that, you've never seen so much shine in them "I'm really, really sorry... for everything. especially the day i got injured, this means everything to me and i was terrified that i would never be able to skate again because of my own stupidity, for being so stubborn and not listening to others, also because i had never hurt myself before and at that moment I could feel how my ankle was separating from my whole body, this injury scared the hell out of me." the crack in his voice reaches in and squeezes your heart so tight you can feel your eyes tearing up "you were right in all things what did you say, that I'm a heartless egoist who never thinks about what he says and I'm hurting the people around me-"
it was the second time you saw him cry.
"I didn't mean that." you blink the tears away as fast as they appeared, seeing sunghoon in that state and remembering all bothered you more than you liked to admit. before you might have enjoyed it but now it was different.
and it was the first time you cried in front of him.
"okay, I know I deserved it anyway," his eyes were now focused on the floor "I was just- I was trying to be the best but I realized quite late that that wasn't the way and everything I told you during years was really horrible and I'm sorry you had to endure all that, if I were you I would have hit myself several times already." he chuckled.
"i really wanted to," you hit him with your shoulder playfully "but I'm sorry too, I said horrible things to you."
"don't worry about me, I don't even know why I behaved like this for so long and I wish I could have seen how stupid I was much earlier." he moved his hand close to yours, wanting to take it in his but finally he ended up putting it in his pocket "I realized that skating means a lot to you too. maybe we're not so different after all." he looked at your face again with a smile on his face.
"maybe you're right, I mean, look at us now talking normally as if nothing happened."
"yeah but I don't want this to come to nothing, I really want you to forgive me." your heart jumped out of your chest "I was scared that you were so much better than me because I really think you could easily defeat me because of how much you try every day, even much more than me, the things I did and said to make you feel bad so that you stop skating are unjustified, but now I want to do things right and I hope we can start again." he sounded so sorry that he was really making it hard for you to hold a grudge.
"there were many years that we argued for nothing and you're not the only one to blame, you were ten times worse with me but I cannot hold a grudge or hate you all my life," he lifted his head with hope in his eyes waiting for you to keep talking "I think we're fine."
"thank you." his smile was accomplishing things inside of you, and you didn't like it "also, uh- I could see what a wonderful person you are and I was surprised that you treated me well after all, I was waiting for you to spit on me when you saw me or something like that," you raised your eyebrow wanting to really hit him this time "and I saw this as my chance to make things right."
"don't lie to me now, it was your mom that changed your mind so suddenly, right?" he burst out laughing, only to end up leaning his head against the wall staring up at the ceiling.
"maybe she played a big role in that." you couldn't take your eyes off his profile "you're a really good skater and i'll tell you all the time if need be in order to erase the bad things i said before and that probably are still in your head."
"what do you mean?"
"you don't need to pretend with me now, I can tell those little insecurities you have when you're on the ice." you wanted to get out of that place as fast as possible, you didn't think you were so obvious about it and sunghoon noticing made things worse.
he noticed that but he couldn't do anything else besides give you a smile, you simply remained silent with your eyes closed enjoying the silence and thanking that it wasn't uncomfortable like previous times, now both were a little more comfortable with each other's presence.
you needed to hear those words, you needed to feel that relief, as if the weight you had been feeling on your back all this time stopped squeezing your wounds, letting them heal.
if it wasn't for mr. choi who burst in, you both would have fallen asleep.
—
it was finally the day.
and there you were, at the winter olympics with your suit on waiting for your turn which was at any moment. you felt like throwing up since you took the plane to here and days had passed since that, your body was shaking—you could feel your blood flow through your veins and you were sure that at any moment you would pass out before entering the ice rink, mr. choi had been by your side the whole time trying to calm you down but your heart seemed to want to explode and you just wanted to dig your nails into your skin like a cat.
you kept going around and you were already making everyone around you nervous. you were so focused fixing your suit making sure there was no mistake that you almost didn't hear the sound of your phone, it was a call. and it was from sunghoon.
you pick it up quickly "hey." his voice sounded so calm in your ears that he helped you let out a sigh you didn't even know you were holding.
"hey." you noticed how even your voice trembled.
"I can feel from here how nervous you are," his laugh cleared your thoughts "relax, I know you can handle this and it will be great."
you bit your lip, not knowing very well what to say "thank you sunghoon, but if you were with me right now I would have already pulled your hair out to calm myself." his loud laugh forced you to move the phone away from your ear.
"you're so lucky, you're there with my biggest idol and you're wasting your time being nervous," you let out a sigh, silently thanked him for calling you and speaking to you so normally, maybe you'd even ask for an autograph to thank him properly. you talked for a while about a butterfly that had entered sunghoon's room the other day until mr. choi called you to get ready "I don't want to take up any more of your time but i want you to know that you don't have to prove anything to anyone, everything will be fine considering that you had the best coach," you smiled at that "you have the strength and talent to win all the medals in the world, good luck."
he hung up without letting you say anything and you could swear that a second before you heard him blow a kiss. but maybe it was just your imagination.
but sunghoon was right, you had worked hard day and night for this moment and would do your best. you were fulfilling your dream, and you were going to win that medal.
"what did sunghoon say to you to make you blush like this?" mr. choi teased you, you hadn't noticed how hot your cheeks felt until he pointed it out.
he had been very sweet to you and you couldn't help it. but quickly any thoughts left your head, you were ready to compete.
—
"congratulations! I knew you would make it."
arms around your waist were the first thing you felt when you opened your door in the middle of the night, sunghoon's hug was already leaving you breathless, besides you felt dizzy from the sudden warmth of his body against yours, which was still cold and tired, then he lifts you off the ground causing you to hold on tight to him as he spun you around in the air.
his laughter had lit up the night along with the stars and the sound of crickets in the background, when he left you on the ground and walked away from your body you couldn't help but watch him carefully, you had spent several days without seeing him after spending practically 24 hours together and only now did you realize how beautiful he was.
"thank you sunghoon," his smile really made your day so much better "why are you here?"
"well, you just arrived and I definitely had to be the first to congratulate you in person when I already sent you thousands of messages" his hand never let go of his waist "besides mr. choi obviously."
so pretty.
you never got to see his features as closely as now, but he really looked like a dream, now you could understand those girls on your team who never stopped talking about him, it had only been you who was clouded by the hatred that you felt that you never saw beyond his attitudes with you.
"my parents really wanted to see you today," his voice was full of emotion and you could feel how some tears wanted to come out of your eyes, not even your parents were there with you but you had all the support of his "but it's too late, they still want you to know that you did amazing and that you deserve it."
"that's so sweet," you ran your hand over his arm that was still holding you "tell them thanks for me, maybe I'll visit them again one of these days."
"they would love that."
you were both silent for a while, it wasn't annoying but you really wanted to talk to him more but nothing wanted to come out of your mouth.
"i think i should-"
"hey." he stopped any movement tightening his grip, he had been scared to see how you wanted to go back into your house.
"what's the matter?"
"uh, nothing, I..." he fills his other hand up to his neck scratching it "I'm really proud of you."
you giggled seeing him so nervous, giving compliments was still a bit difficult for him "thank you sunghoon, to be honest I never thought I'd hear that from you."
"but I'm serious, all those times I told you that you didn't know how to skate or that you did it wrong were a complete lie, you did it perfectly and I-"
"hey, it's okay," you caressed his arm looking for him to look you in the eye "you already apologized before, you don't need to do it again."
"okay," now he was so restless that with his movements he hit your shoulder lightly "I can't believe we spent years doing this stupid thing for nothing."
you both laugh and remain silent looking at each other under the moonlight. you felt the change in the air and now there was a different sparkle in his eyes that told you so many things you were terrified to take in.
sunghoon never knew when it happened but your existence began to weigh less and less on his head, you were still on his mind but now it was very different, he began to feel different every time he was with you and he was surprised to know that you weren't someone else completely different and you were the same girl he spent "hating" for years. was it really hate? he never believed that but he could never close his mouth when he saw you do something wrong, maybe he liked seeing you angry or seeing how you failed because after all you were the only competition he had.
his heart didn't lie but he was scared as hell of how things could turn out, he even talked to his mother about it but now he was questioning if it had been a good idea. he never fell in love, hell he hadn't even been as interested in a person as he does with you, the constant need he felt to want to help you improve and be with you all the time was beginning to be annoying for him. so many years alone and now his foolish heart wants to merge with yours? it was ridiculous.
but he liked it.
all these new sensations made him feel like a totally new person who was just discovering the world despite having lived 19 years. everything had been so gray for him that he was overwhelmed to see that there were millions of colors out there that he had refused to see.
suddenly sunghoon gets closer to your body, his fingers caress your cheek and your body begins to fail "what are you doing?"
"actually I have something else to tell you," you were scared by your heartbeat that didn't seem to want to control itself "I can't keep it anymore but I think- I think I like you."
time stops for a few seconds, your eyes open wide not believing what you just heard, you don't move or say anything and sunghoon thinks maybe he made a mistake, he wanted to speak again to apologize but you walk away from him, as if his touch burned you.
"I'm sorry I have to go." you closed the door in his face.
and sunghoon thought that he did everything wrong, that after all your wounds were still open and he had no right to have done that, that contrary to your words maybe your heart hadn't completely forgiven him. he wished he had cleaned his mouth with soap.
the overwhelming wave of feelings that hit you felt like a tsunami, and you were drowning.
—
you haven't seen sunghoon since then and your mind was a complete mess.
it was absurd that no matter what the reason was, he was always circulating your thoughts without letting you rest even for a single day.
"who are you waiting for?" yuna touched your shoulder surprising you.
"no one, why?"
"well you've been looking at the door for like ten minutes." you turned your whole body only to be in front of her with a marked expression of confusion on your face.
"no I wasn't."
"yeah you were," she just laughs "never mind, i guess you must have a lot on your mind right now." her raised eyebrows made you suspicious of her words.
"what do you mean?"
"don't play dumb, you know perfectly well what I'm talking about," you just looked to the side avoiding her face, you didn't want to think about it "did something happen between you two? you used to be together all the time and now I haven't seen him for several days around here although his ankle was already good enough to return his training."
you played with your fingers, scared to answer, scared of your feelings "I don't know."
she was silent looking at you with her eyes narrowed "you know that with that answer you already told me everything I needed to know, right?" your cheeks burned in an instant "it always bothered you that sunghoon was someone so stubborn, but you don't realize that you're almost the same." her finger lightly tapped your forehead for you to see and stop hiding.
"we are not the same." you wrinkled your nose, wanting to end that conversation.
"oh of course not dear, I've known you both for years and I could even say that you are opposite. but ones that attract each other." she smiled seeing your expression "and both are equally oblivion with your feelings."
she got up grabbing her things, you looked quickly and everyone was ready to go to her house "yuna!"
"bye!" she quickly advanced her steps to the exit, it was impossible to stop her.
what was she referring to? you let out a groan, you already had too much on your mind for her to confuse you even more.
could you really like him? you kept thinking that, just a few months ago you hated each other to death, was it possible to have those feelings now? It was ridiculous whichever way you looked at it.
"haven't you left yet? great," mr. choi sat next to you, preventing you from thinking "i need you to practice with sunghoon, it's just to help him and control him with his ankle, I don't want him to do anything risky."
you frowned visibly annoyed "what am I now? his babysitter?" seeing his expression made you regret your words "I'm sorry but everyone is already leaving and besides, shouldn't you be the one to help him with that?"
"oh come on, don't act like you never stayed up late practicing, it won't take long." he really didn't need to tell you anything else because you would do it anyway.
—
the air is sharp to breathe and there you were, again wrapped in that awkward silence.
which you had not missed at all.
"are you ready?" he doesn't even look you in the eye, but neither can you.
he entered the ice rink without saying anything, the music began to play and as soon as his body moved you couldn't take your eyes off him at any time, he became one with the music, he paid attention and dedication to every little thing detail and that was what made his presentations truly unique.
"try to slow down." still he was pushing himself too hard, and you didn't want his ankle to heal badly or worst case he hurt again.
when he finished he moved closer to your body, scared that he wanted to talk about that night, but also afraid that he would ignore you. but not a single word left his mouth, he just stood there in front of you looking at your face and then opened his arms, waiting for you to do something.
you shifted your gaze from his arms to his face a few times and your body turned on its own, enveloping him in a warm embrace. your arms find their place in him and your face seeks comfort in the space of his neck, you feel in heaven when he tries to wrap you around his whole body leaving not a single inch between you "can we skate together? it feels lonely."
both weren't even skating like you should, just spinning around nonstop while your arms constantly searched for your bodies not wanting to be even a second apart, it was as if you needed each other's warmth to live or else the ice below would consume you.
your body was at peace but at the same time full of nerves and doubts, had it been a mistake not to say anything at that moment and close the door in his face? why didn't he push you away after you behaved that way? you didn't know but you don't want the answer either, you didn't want to think about what would become of you if he just disappeared from your life, he was always there no matter if you couldn't stand each other before. he will always be a part of your life.
"actually I asked mr. choi to do this," you moved your head away from his chest, looking at him confused "I almost had to beg him to tell you to stay a little longer and let us be alone."
"why did you do it?"
his face came closer to yours "because I missed you." his breathing mixed with yours and you no longer thought you would be able to stay calm "besides because the last time I saw you you seemed to hate me again."
you hid your face again only to hit his chest, he didn't make a sound and the rage you had inside you made you hit him again and again and again. but he never pushed you away, his hands were still firm on your body, he knew he deserved it.
"you can't do this to me," you tried not to shed a single tear "saying that to me after everything you've put me through? it's not fair."
"I'm sorry."
"I know. I know you are and I hate you for it." when you stopped beating him sunghoon could only hug you tightly letting you sob into his shirt "I hate you for making me forgive you so easily despite everything."
"I'm really sorry." hearing sunghoon apologize had already become normal "it was my fault for saying that to you so out of the blue and thinking that you would reciprocate my feelings after everything I did to you, I-"
you cut him off with a kiss.
a shiver ran through your whole body, you had never felt your heart beat so fast to the point that it was the only thing you could feel, but the touch of his lips made you feel more alive than ever.
his lips were soft as winter, like snow that melted under your warm touch.
it was just like when the sun melts the ice.
"but above all I hate myself for reciprocating your feelings." sunghoon's soul returned to his body upon hearing those words, you can't help but smile as you see how the panic in his eyes fades.
"god you scared the hell out of me," his fingers wiped your tears gently "my crybaby," you laughed at that old nickname "since I started being with you more I could feel my heart beating faster whenever I was near you, look." he holds your hand to put it on his chest so you can feel his heartbeat "I feel so stupid for everything I did before."
you realize that back then you were drowning because you didn't swim far enough, but now you could breathe.
maybe liking him wasn't such a bad thing.
"as you should." you were silent for a while just feeling each other's heartbeat "i shouldn't have closed the door on you that day." he couldn't stop looking at your face fondly, his gaze drifting to your lips most of the time.
sunghoon took a deep breath "don't worry about it," he practically whispered on your lips, wanting another kiss "I like you a lot. I was so scared of losing you."
he closed his eyes letting his forehead rest against yours "I like you a lot too, I think I just needed time to think, I'm sorry."
"stop apologizing, just please let me kiss you again and again and again."
It was such an intimate moment, as if you were in your own bubble away from everyone and just showing each other affection.
none of you stopped until you were forced to pull away from lack of air "you made me see a lot of things differently." he brushed your hair behind your ear, caressing your cheek with the tip of his thumb.
you really noticed, sunghoon had changed a lot in such a short time to how he was just a few months ago, but you always thought it was because of his injury that had restricted many things, you never thought it was because of you. before he was cold and rarely smiled, he was alone most of the time and seemed not to want to make friends, he just concentrated on skating. but now it was as if he were a different person although deep down he was still him. the same sunghoon who pouted, didn't speak, and turned away from everyone when he was upset, the introverted but noisy boy who always made mr. choi laugh with his jokes, who worked hard everyday to be the best, the same sunghoon who always loved dearly. you laughed at yourself, you used to think he had no heart when in fact he has the biggest of all.
who would have thought that sunghoon was this loving? all the time wanting to be glued to you.
"you know, maybe I've won a lot of medals in the past, and all of them being better than you," you wanted to hit him for making fun of you at that moment "but nothing compares to you." he gives you a little peak "you are the most precious thing I've ever gained in all my life."
you laugh, running your hands over his neck "gained?" you gently tugged at his hair as you brought your face close to his lips, teasing him.
"just kiss me already."
and you did, enjoying the moment wishing it would never end and wishing your heart felt like this forever, more alive than ever.
"can i ask you out on a date?" god, you would never get tired of looking at his eyes and his moles.
"only if you don't slam doors in my face." he laughs, only for you to shut him up with another kiss, and another, and another.
"deal."

you, who was still shining in his bleak dream. he starts walking towards you.

you start running, too.
what the fuck? why was he chasing you? you speed up, panting as you continue running after the boy that was currently right behind you.
“wait! stop, please!” he yells out after you.
well, this isn’t how you expected the night to go. but it was your fault for letting yourself get caught.
despite being pretty good at your job, you were far from perfect. sometimes, during the process of transforming peoples dreams into nightmares, the ‘dreamer’ would see you. of course, you would never let them actually catch you. you knew how to handle yourself in these situations.
spotting your gateway, you quickly run towards it before leaving his nightmare.
thankfully, you were able to avoid the boy that was helplessly chasing after you. feeling good about another night of successful ‘dream transforming,’ you peacefully stroll back home.
you’d seen what happened to others who got caught in dreams.
although you were sure you’d never have to meet the same fate as them, the thought still occupied your mind sometimes. it was a risky job, transforming people’s dreams. that’s why your agency took special measures to make sure it never happened.
before people knew the potential dangers of entering and exiting dreams, there was no need for agencies or regulations. anyone who had the powers could open and close portals at will, usually picking up an item that was important to the dreamer. that was the gateway into dreams.
when you have someone's memories and sentiments, it’s almost too easy to manifest yourself into their mind, gaining the ability to twist and bend their imagination to your will.
but as more and more of the dream shifters started disappearing, the rest of the community took action by creating their own agencies to help them.
unfortunately, this led to many clashes within the dream shifters. after decades of fighting, there were two main groups remaining.
those who wanted to help dreamers; choosing to use their powers for good, transforming nightmares into happy dreams. most call them ‘the visionists.’
and then there were people like you. the phantoms. to be fair, your agency wasn’t built on making people miserable. rather, there was a long history of shifters who were sick of being used to fix peoples dreams, and rebelled against the system by turning the dreams into nightmares instead.
now, you work to keep shifters safe by scaring the public.
saving yourself meant compromising morals sometimes. that’s what the phantoms believed. something visionists saw as cruel, and inexcusable.
you set your things down once you get home, and start getting comfortable.
“hey, you’re finally back?” your roommate, yeeun, asks.
“visited two dreams today,” you reply, “i guess i lost track of time.”
“make sure to take breaks, love.”
your roommate was one of the independents.
independents were categorized as shifters who didn’t belong to any agencies, either going into hiding so their powers don’t get caught, or switching between fixing and messing up people's dreams. in any case, they usually didn’t like taking sides.
“what about you? did you go dream hopping today?”
“no, i just stayed at home. who did you visit?”
“hmm there was a guy, looked about 30. his fear was his wife finding out about his affair.”
“yikes.” yeeun commented.
“i know, right? and the second dude, he was pretty cute. he started chasing after me, though, that was pretty scary for a second.”
“hate when that happens.” she looks at your eyes, noticing how tired you looked, “you should go rest now. it sounds like you had a long night.”
you nod, finally ready to enter your own dreams for the night.
sometimes you shaped your dreams, and other times, you simply let your subconscious take control over them. this was one of the nights you decided to not interfere.
your consciousness floats around, letting you experience an array of emotions, all within a few hours. realistically, it hasn’t been that long, yet you feel like you’ve lived several days in the short timeframe. in this state, you’ve found yourself vulnerable to your mind, completely at its mercy.
you often wonder how other people feel, knowing they can’t control even their own dreams.
your dream starts off dark like it usually does. you hear a distant voice, one that you recognize. the ground is collapsing. you can’t see what’s going on. it’s too dark. your body starts sweating. are you nervous? you must be nervous. the voice loses its power. it’s growing more and more distant. did you miss your chance again?
and then there’s a burst of light. but there’s no sign of danger, or anything you were experiencing a mere second ago. the only proof of the past few seconds is the sweat clinging to your body.
oh, you’re awake now.
“morning, sweetheart!” yeeun greets you as she makes her way to your room.
you smile at her and snap yourself back to reality, “good morning, have sweet dreams?”
“great, actually. i dreamed that school was out today.” she sighs, “i really don’t want to present today.”
“right, did you finish the powerpoint?” you ask, as she nods.
“like the good best friend slash project partner slash roommate that i am!”
at school, you’re not a shifter. at school, you’re a teenager.
you’re a normal teenager that doesn’t haunt people’s dreams. would you even have friends if they knew what you did?
“and marcuse says, ‘the very process of existence in an unfree world is ‘the continuous negation of that which threatens to deny freedom.’’ the bold, and impactful statement reflects the themes portrayed in the book.”
your teacher scribbles notes as you talk, presumably evaluating you. you close your eyes and take a deep breath after you finish your lines as yeeun continues the presentation.
“very interesting choice of book to report on! i’m glad you two challenged yourself.”
as expected, of course. you were always the type to take up challenges. and execute it perfectly.
which is why you’re confused by the fact that this girl's dreams aren’t budging. you start deconstructing the perfect world she’s built for herself again, only to find your efforts are in vain. the walls you attempted to trap her in start crumbling.
what the hell was going on?
you try draining the color from the dream, instead. and that’s when you see a random boy in the dream. he still looked normal, despite the world around him going black and white. and then he releases a frustrated grunt before the dream transforms into a beautiful scene again.
so he was the one fucking with your job. another shifter?
there was no point in fighting with him here. so, naturally, you start plotting on how to mess up his dreams later tonight before jumping out of your current target's dream.
it was times like this that you found fun in being a shifter.
you get to researching using the agency's database, easily finding the lists of visionists.
was this a little wrong? maybe. was your agency going to scold you for using their information for your own interests? definitely. but what was the point of being a shifter if you were only going to slave away to the agency, anyway?
that’s how you justified what you were about to do.
his dream was unsurprisingly stunning and peaceful. you could spare a few minutes to explore before completing your task, you decide.
it was a beautiful setting. if it was real, you’d definitely have to visit. there was a river running along the grass, and exotic flowers grew all around you. the smell of fresh fruit draws your attention to a nice spot near some tall hanging trees.
there he was, a few people surrounding his figure. he throws his head back in laughter. did he make himself prettier in his imagination or did he look like this earlier? whatever, you don’t have time to dwell over this thought, choosing to start transforming his dream now.
you start by making his friends walk away from him. already, the boy's bright face contorts to one of confusion.
you must’ve forgotten that he transforms dreams as a profession as well, as he catches on too fast. his eyes quickly scan the area, meeting yours instantly. you let out an awkward laugh.
“...are you a shifter?” he asks. he starts getting up, making sure to not get too close as to touch you.
“no. just visiting, to be honest.” you respond coolly.
“wait, i saw you earlier. why the hell were ruining someone else's dream? they’re all innocent, you know?”
you scoff at his statement, “excuse you. i don’t need a lecture from a visionist.”
the way you spat that word made it sound like the worst insult. maybe you saw it as such.
“and i don’t need a phantom in my dreams. please leave now.”
“you’re not gonna touch me, are you? you know that would be the end for both of us. so i’m good, really. i think i’ll stay.” it’s easier to be brave when you’re not in danger, you find out at this moment.
“why are you even here?”
“stop ‘curing’ peoples dreams. they don’t need that, just let them fix themselves naturally.”
“says the one going out of their way to hurt people?”
just as you thought, talking to a visionist was like talking to a brick wall. blinded by their apparently strong morals that they’re completely ready to spit out of their mind when it comes to phantoms. you figure you’re probably as disgusted by him as he is of you.
“don’t make me turn your friends into zombies, angel-boy.” you laugh. he doesn’t. man, his sense of humor must suck.
“i have a name, you know?”
“well, i gave you one i like better. i think i’ll stick to calling you angel.”
“how can you mock visionists like that? we’re actually helping people unlike you. you’ll call me nothing, i don’t want to talk to you.” he says unamused.
you already knew his name, anyways. how else would you have found him? the agency’s database told you everything you needed to know about the boy, despite his obliviousness to it all.
“well, jungwon,” you give him a small wave, “i hope you enjoy your surprise!” you say before walking away to leave his dream. he already knows that your surprise was nothing good.
what he wasn’t expecting, however, was to wake up to the surprise instead of meeting it in his dream.
how immature of you to steal his teddy bear. but it was important nonetheless. having his teddy bear meant having an important item from his memories, allowing you to travel into his dream without needing to break into his house anymore.
he didn’t even want to think of the troubles that would surely come in his near future.
now, it wasn’t your intention to let him see you, or even sabotage his dream more than once. but what could he even do? he was as powerless to you as he was to his agency. he would never be allowed to break into your mind unless it was to help you.
unfortunately for you, jungwon knows more than one way to get revenge.
Tumblr media
unaware of jungwon’s current plotting, you prepare for the night as you always do. you plan to forget about jungwon for the day, just go to work and clear your mind. maybe stay up with yeeun for the night.
however, your plans were ruined once you realized jungwon wasn’t the only problem you had.
you spent an hour being scolded by your boss. before you could even pick up your bottle of liquid protection, she snatches your arm, pulling you into her room. you’re only half-listening to her talk about how you don’t deserve the privileges the agency gives you if you can’t use your powers responsibly.
the ‘liquid protection’ was your agency’s genius solution to the disappearances.
it was challenging to work around the subconsciousness of people who had complex minds, often losing sight of the gateway. since their item is what allows you to manifest yourself inside one’s mind, it’s also the way out. the issue occurred when people’s lives were so complex that it was nearly impossible to relocate the single area that relates to their ‘item.’
and when a dreamer’s mind is so fractured to the point there is no single point of origin for their personal ‘item,’ the portal would scatter throughout the dream. it’s no wonder so many shifters went missing when dealing with certain clients.
that’s why an array of shifters banded together, making a drink that grounds anyone to reality, therefore granting shifters easy access outside the dream without the need to find the gateway.
this technology was only used in emergencies, and wasn’t effective if you had already been caught in a dream, but it was an extra safety measure you wouldn’t have had otherwise.
“do i need to remind you of the consequences of letting a literal dreamer touch you?” your boss fumes.
“not at all, the memory is crystal clear.” you tap your foot impatiently. it angers you. you were affected by the incident more than anyone else. getting scolded like this was truly unfair.
“don’t catch an attitude with me now, child.”
“i’m just sick of everyone else acting like they care. like their best friend got taken away from them forever.”
“we’re all sad about that, trust me.”
“oh yeah? so how come you never visit her? how come the agency in all their wisdom never fucking tried to fix things?” you scoff, not even bothering to wait for an answer before walking away.
“if you walk out the door right now, i will suspend your shifting privileges until you apologize and beg.”
you walk out, anyways.
who needed a stupid drink to pull them out of a dream? you’re good enough at your job to escape on your own.
you walk the lonely pavements, finally processing the events that just took place. your feet unconsciously carry you back to her.
and here you were, standing in front of the hospital.
you sigh, unable to make it past the front door in fear that you won’t see her like she used to be.
when a dreamer touches a shifter, it breaks the dream, trapping the shifter inside the dream permanently. unable to return, the shifter's physical and mental self has no choice but to rot in a shattered dream.
as for the dreamer? their physical body still exists, but their subconscious is completely broken leaving them in permanent coma.
the dreamer your friend got stuck in is currently hooked onto several wires and machines. you used to visit to talk to them. your friend, and her dreamer. but every time, your heart breaks more. and you find yourself frequenting less and less.
the guilt leaves you sick to your stomach.
before the memory eats you alive, you quickly leave the hospital with a heavy heart.
“hi.” you hear someone say from behind you.
fuck, jungwon’s found you already.
you turn around wearing a blank expression to show him you weren’t scared. in all honesty, you weren’t expecting this, and you definitely weren’t prepared to deal with him right now. you’re just grateful it’s not in a dream so he can’t fight right now.
“i’m not in the mood today, jungwon.”
“well i wasn’t in the mood when you trespassed my dream,” his lips curve up as he adds your name at the end.
he probably searched up the shifter database like you so it wasn’t much of a shock, but he looked so proud of the fact that he now knew your name.
you turn back around, and continue walking the opposite direction.
“hey!” he shouts after you, following as you make your way to a small restaurant. “hey, you can’t just walk away while i was talking to you.”
“hm, buy me dinner and i might consider talking to you.”
you were the one that started this, yet he was still the one pulling out his wallet, ready to pay for you.
“why did you go looking for me? you know you can always find me in your dreams.” you tease.
“please, the last thing i want to do is see you. i’m gonna get my revenge”
he starts eating with you, the both of you glare at each other occasionally in between the slurping. he throws in a few insults, and you return them all. wow, was this how he planned on getting back at you?
you think jungwon’s stupid. you think he’s too good, and you think he has no sense of humor.
you hate people like him.
jungwon thinks you’re lousy, evil, and blind.
you two are really polar opposites. it’s a surprise you aren’t physically fighting him at this moment.
“i hate people like you.” he says.
“you read my mind! i was thinking the exact same thing, angel.” you mutter, pure sarcasm coating your words.
“and i don’t just mean phantoms.” he elaborates, “i mean cold-hearted, selfish, miserable–”
“okay, okay, i get it,” you cut him off, laughing a bit, “i feel the same way.”
jungwon doesn’t understand this. what reason could you possibly have for hating him other than the fact that he was from your rival agency?
just yesterday, jungwon was sitting in his bed, sighing to himself. how could he have let his guard down like this? and he doesn’t even have his teddy bear to hug for comfort now.
what could he do about this situation, though? he couldn’t just waltz into your dream like you did. he’d be expelled from the agency before he could even come back. so, was he just going to walk up to you and punch you? that’d land him in jail.
he tried thinking of all the elaborate, and unrealistic plans he could possibly come up with. from making you fall in love with him, to following you around, re-transforming the nightmares of your clients so your efforts would be in vain. that’s not it, you wouldn't let him win like that.
just as he was about to give up, and accept defeat, a lightbulb flashes above his head. he’s got the perfect plan.
it would take a while, sure, but it would be worth it to see you getting a taste of your own medicine, and jungwon didn’t mind being patient for that scene.
now here he was in front of you. seeing you so sad earlier almost made him change his mind, but then you opened your mouth to hurl another insult towards him. it’s game on.
Tumblr media
for some reason, the boy had been attached to you for the past few days.
just
following you around. he isn’t even rude to you, only responding when you insult him first. other than that, he’s been nice. you know he has a plan; you aren’t stupid. but the most you could do until you figure out the plan is enjoy your free meals.
taking a bite out of your food, you decide to start a conversation with him. a normal one this time.
“how old were you when you found out you were a shifter?”
he looks at you as if he was questioning your intentions, “i’m not sure. i just remember i was young.”
“ah, how did you end up joining the visionists?”
“i don’t know, how did you end up a phantom?”
you look down at your food before lying, “because i like messing with people.”
at this, he scoffs, “that’s nice. i became a visionist because i like helping people.” you could tell he was upset by your answer based on his facial expression, but he was keeping his composure very well. he clears his throat, “but, when did you find out you were a shifter?”
“yesterday, actually.”
he laughs at your joke.
well that was unexpected.
you thought he’d roll his eyes, or make a rude comment like he does to all your jokes. it’s strange, his laugh is actually pretty nice. if only he had a sense of humor like this always.
“i’m guessing that means you were too young to remember, like me.” he adds, “so why haven’t you been going dream transforming recently?”
you lost your drink privileges. but you couldn’t tell him that. “uhh, i just wanted to go on vacation. it’s a risky job, y’know?”
he nods, stealing some of your food, “mhm, i know.” you let him go this time. he was paying for it all, anyways.
the rest of the time you eat in an only slightly uncomfortable silence. he thinks of offering to walk you home, clearing his throat, but he regrets it instantly, and looks away as quickly as he caught your attention.
“well, i should get going now. see ya later, loser.” you finally announce.
he smiles, waving you goodbye, “bye, dummy.”
as soon as you leave, he sighs to himself, cursing at how he’s making progress too slowly. but what can he do? you’re not the type to open up that fast. he’s figured that much out by now.
jungwon’s plan was fool-proof. but you weren’t any fool.
he’d plan to get close to you, close enough to track down a client of yours, someone who’s had their dream ruined thanks to you.
once he found someone who had a vendetta against you, he would lure you into their dream.
he wasn’t allowed to turn a dreamer's dream into a nightmare, right? that’s what was stopping him from bursting into your dream himself. but if the dreamer wanted to see you suffer, he would be able to fight you in the dream. after all, it would be like a dream come true to them.
which is why your trust was crucial to his plan. he needed you to believe in him in order to lure you in.
he thinks he’s doing good so far. but why haven’t you been dream-hopping recently? this detail has him scratching his brain in confusion.
what happened to all the chaos you’d been creating all of a sudden? you just.. chose to stop? something wasn’t right.
“sir, your bill.” the waitress says as he shakes off his thoughts.
it was strange, really. your current relationship with him. “i think for number two you have to—” he pauses when he catches you staring at him instead of your work. he clears his throat, “are you okay?”
you tilt your head slightly, “be honest with me jungwon, why are you here? i’m not stupid.”
his mind begins clouding with possible excuses, “i, haha funny story,” he begins.
“i like funny stories.” you encourage him to continue.
“to be honest, i just thought you were really cool, like, the way you had the courage to go into my dream knowing i was a shifter. and i, i guess i admire you.”
jungwon was complimenting you. in a weird way, but it was a compliment nonetheless.
“plus, you’re kind of pretty.”
you almost choke on air, “pretty?!”
“geez, don’t overreact.” he turns back to the papers scattered on the desk, his ears displaying a soft pink.
in your eyes, your relationship with jungwon was finally improving. he would help you study, buy you food, and text you to make sure you were okay at night. you stopped insulting him as much, and responded to all of his ‘goodnight’ texts.
the past few days were spent with you indulging him in your life, and him opening up to you about his. you figured he’d forgotten about his ‘revenge’ plans by now. and maybe, you could even be friends with him now.
you invited him to visit a park with you, admiring the pretty flowers, and the light breeze that graced your face.
he keeps his hands in his pockets as he walks alongside you, “are you sure you’re not cold?”
you tease him, “why? are you going to offer me your coat, angel?”
jungwon’s stomach twists in guilt. you looked genuinely happy at this moment. but to him, this was all a lie, “well, that depends on your answer.” he replies calmly despite his raging thoughts.
“in that case, i am cold.” you giggle as he throws his coat over your shoulders.
“thanks jungwon. i really enjoyed myself today,” your honest eyes hurt him more than they should, “and
” he raises an eyebrow, waiting for you to finish your sentence, “and i don’t think i can hate you anymore.”
for some reason, this sentiment makes him angry rather than bringing him comfort. “of course, i don’t hate you either.”
for some reason, he didn’t feel like he was lying.
the soft grass gently caressed your fingers as you and jungwon sat together under a calmly swaying tree, providing a cool shade. in a single moment of impulse, one of your biggest confessions almost came to light, “i lied to you.”
“hm? what about?” jungwon asks. you feel vulnerable right now, all your memories resurfacing.
“when i told you why i became a phantom. i don’t just like messing with people.” you were unsure whether to stop there or not, but his tender gaze that shows you he’s really listening to you urges you to continue. “i chose to become a phantom because i was sick of shifters being used.”
“so you and all the other phantoms rebelled.” he concludes, guessing your story, “why don’t you just hide? what’s the point of hurting others?”
“that wouldn’t work and you know it. the second people figure out there are shifters, they’ll do what they did in the past. they’ll use us to fix their dreams, never stopping to consider how we feel.”
he wants to understand you, truly. but he just doesn’t get it.
you sigh, “this is the only way. i need to make sure nobody is ever forced into such a dangerous job to the point they’re risking their life. i’m protecting us.”
“okay.” is the only response he’s able to formulate.
yet oddly enough, it’s all you needed to hear. you never expected him to see you as good, but you were glad he could see you as okay.
your sudden laughter catches him off-guard, “i guess even my agency has its limits when it comes to messing with people. actually, i got my drink taken away from me because of when i intervened with your dream.”
and suddenly everything makes sense to jungwon. that’s why you haven’t been transforming dreams recently. he smiles, keeping up his act, “see! you shouldn’t have done that.” he bumps your shoulder teasingly, now laughing with you.
“but if i didn’t, we wouldn’t be friends right now.”
there it is again. that weird sinking feeling in his stomach.
“it’s getting dark.” he stands up, dusting his clothes off, “we should go home.”
“you’re not going to offer to walk me home this time?”
he tries his best to pull off his most genuine smile, but it’s only getting harder, “do i even need to offer?”
“well you should, because i wanted to race home today.”
“rac–”
before he’s able to ask any questions or even protest, you’re already dashing ahead, “last one pays for dinner next time!” you yell to make sure he hears even though he knows he’s paying either way.
somewhere along the race, he teasingly bumped into you. so you did, too. that’s how it became more of a playful fight rather than a race.
just as you were about to reach your destination, your roommate walks out with trash in her hands when she spots you.
“honey– oh?” yeeun was prepared to greet you, but she stops herself once she sees a boy she’s never seen before walking alongside you.
he politely bows, “hi, my name’s jungwon.”
“i’m yeeun. you’re a friend?” he hums in affirmation, as yeeun looks him up and down before finally meeting his eyes again. you know her well enough to know she was judging your jungwon intensely at this moment. “well, i’ll be taking your ‘friend’ back for the night.” she smiles, grabbing one of your arms and pulling you into the house.
“ew, yeeun. you didn’t even wash your hands after taking out the trash.” yeeun shuts the door behind you, and stares. “what?”
she frowns, “honeyyyy.” you stand there, confused by her behavior. she gracefully lifts your confusion by continuing, “you’re not replacing me. i’m the best friend you could have, to be honest.”
finally, you let out a laugh, “of course not! nobody can replace you.”
“good. i’m visiting your dreams tonight, by the way. i miss doing that.” she skips away to her bedroom.
just like a few nights ago, your feet suddenly go cold. there’s that distant voice calling out to you again. you’re helpless again. just like you always are.
except this time, yeeun is there to witness it all. she’s here for the first time. you can only feel bad that you're putting her through the curse you’ve been enduring since her disappearance.
yeeun doesn’t waste any more time in the dream, going through your gateway before shaking you awake.
“what the hell was that? and i know it’s not just a nightmare, i know what those look like and that was not a normal one.” she interrogates, “is this about your old friend..?” she whispers the last question.
you weakly nod, “she was the one that disappeared
”
“you’re insane. she was a visionist.. wasn’t she?”
“...yes.”
“oh wow.”
you sit on your bed as the two of you fall into silence. she’s probably having a hard time taking all this in. admittedly, it was quite the revelation.
“why have neither of the agencies done anything about her? she’s still stuck in the dream. like she has been for years. why isn’t anyone helping her?”
she asks all the same questions you’ve been torturing yourself with for years. ones you still can’t answer. ones you wish your boss would.
“geez, i knew i’d seen her face before on some visionist file, but to think she was the one
”
you interrupt her train of thought, “we should go back to sleep.”
when she looks at you there’s a softness to her face. there’s a look of pity, and understanding.
“i’ll find a way to save her, i promise.” you can’t stop the sobs that come out at her statement. all you needed was someone who cared like you did.
Tumblr media
jungwon offers to take you out for ice cream, to which you gladly accept.
“honestly, i didn’t expect for us to get this close, even yeeun was surprised.”
“she looked like she hated me. has it been that long since you made friends?”
you know he meant it lightheartedly, but it was true. after your dead friend, yeeun was the only person you had the heart to grow close to. even then, you were always afraid you might have to say goodbye to her as well. it’s hard to open up to others when the person you trust more than anything else is torn away from you.
“what about you, angel? i don’t see you hanging out with anyone other than me.”
“i have friends, of course.” he proudly says, but at your blank expression, there’s a hint of concern on his face, “do you really not have any other friends?”
“to be honest, no. you’re the second friend i have. congratulations, i guess.”
his mouth forms a pout, “i’m glad i can at least be your second, then.”
“technically third,” you correct. at his lost expression, you elaborate, “if you count dead friends.”
jungwon’s eyes practically pop out of his skull, and has to force his mouth to close, “i’m sorry for your loss.”
“she was a shifter, like us. got stuck in a dream. i haven’t had an easy time making friends since. but anyways, thank you for being my friend regardless.”
as jungwon listens to your story, he can’t help himself from feeling worse and worse about what he’s doing. yet one question lingers in his brain. if your friend died from being stuck in a dream, why were you still a phantom? why didn’t you quit?
just as you finish your explanation, a waiter brings your ice cream orders. you thank him before returning to your conversation with jungwon, only to be interrupted by someone yelling at you.
“where is my order?! i’ve been waiting here for half an hour and these teens that probably can’t even pay get their order before me?!”
“sorry, sir, we’ll have your order shortly.” an unlucky waiter responds.
jungwon leans down across the table and gestures for you to do the same, “hey, do you miss dream transforming?” he whispers to you.
your lips curve upwards at what he’s implying, “absolutely.”
“let’s visit his dream tonight. you can mess with him, i’ll just pretend i never saw it.”
your face drops, “but i don’t have a drink..”
“but guess who does?”
a few brain freezes, and mischievous glances later, jungwon and you came up with a plan to transform this rude man's dream tonight.
waiting until all the lights were out inside the house, you make your move towards the door. looking next to you, you notice the lack of jungwon.
“jungwon
what are you doing?”
“i’m trying to find a good window to enter through.”
“you don’t just pick at the door lock?”
“..no? you do? that’s so basic.”
“hey, so what if it’s basic? it works. plus, climbing through a window isn’t exactly creative either.”
he has a hard time not cracking up at your serious face. at his little giggles, you start laughing too.
“stop,” you laugh in between your warnings, “we’re so gonna get caught today.”
“we really are polar opposites.”
“i know why you have to look for windows. it’s because you don’t know how to pick a lock, right?”
“of course i can! what kind of shifter doesn’t.”
you hand him your lock picker, “do it then.”
you watch as he struggles with it, a few minutes pass in light giggles before he finally succeeds, “see?”
“sure, you totally didn’t just wing it and hope it works.”
“and what if i did? i can do it now, and that’s what matters.” he says, waltzing confidently into the house.
“hold on.. i recognize this house
”
“oh, really? have you dream hopped here before?”
“i think i entered a boy’s dream here. he was young, though. maybe the man's son? i’m not sure, i didn’t check the other rooms.”
jungwon didn’t expect to be forced to make this decision so fast.
now, he had two options. let you enter the dad’s dream and mess it up like he planned. or somehow trick you into entering the son’s dream and fight you there.
he almost forgot the original reason he started hanging out with you, but with the appearance of an opportunity like this, his mind is immediately flooded with the bad thoughts he previously drowned out. if he wants, he can get his revenge. right here, right now. then he won’t have to keep paying for your dinners, or sending you ‘fake’ goodnight texts, or use every brain cell trying to figure out your homework. he wouldn't have to lie anymore. he could live a life free from you.
“so, what item do you think looks important to him?” you ask, looking around the old man's room.
“well, since he’s a father, don’t you think his son's items could be more important to him than his own..?”
you immediately stop looking around, turning to look at jungwon. “what?”
“parents usually hold their children really close to their hearts, right?”
“..you’re trying to get me to enter the son’s dream, aren’t you? i told you, i’m not stupid.”
“no!” he blurts out, startled, “i’m not, really. i was just suggesting something. i wouldn’t
”
“you wouldn’t hurt me?”
you know what his stuttering means. you grab his bottle from his hands so he doesn’t try to leave you trapped in a dream, but jungwon tries snatching it back from you.
“give it back!”
“consider it a sign that you and i can trust each other.”
“how can i trust you?” he says in panic.
how can he trust you? after he just tried to fool you into entering the wrong person's dream?
“i’m going to his dream, are you coming with?”
right as you’re about to enter the dream, he aggressively throws the dad’s phone away, out of your reach. instead, he quickly grabs your arms and drags you to the other bedroom.
“jungwon?! stop!”
he picks up a book from the son's bedside table, and pulls the both of you into his dreams.
still shaken from the incident, you’re allowed barely any time before jungwon starts altering the dream already.
“what the hell?” the ground sinks under you, and you fall with it, “what are you doing?”
“i’m getting my payback.” he seethes. has he absolutely lost his damn mind?
“i thought we were past this, jungwon!”
“i don’t appreciate you giving all the innocent civilians’ dreams your stupid little ‘makeovers’ so if you could–”
is he serious? after all this time, that’s what this is all about? his grudges must be a thousand times worse than yours. “be better at your job, then!” you spit back, collapsing buildings around him.
he jumps past all your attacks expertly before flipping you upside down using the platform you were on. you flip him with you before jumping off, and straightening yourself. he lunges forward towards you, but you pull a nearby sign in front of you, blocking him.
“are you really going to keep attacking me unprovoked?”
he’s close enough for your eyes to meet. they’re glossy, as if he’s about to burst into tears. he questions himself for a second. why is he even doing this? why couldn’t he have just put all this behind him, and move on from you?
it’s because you messed with him first, right? because you’re a bad person, and you deserve this.
but do you really? within the time he’s known you, you’ve only been a normal teenager. kind, and not heartless like he expected, with the exception of your first encounter. within the time he’s known you, he’s the one who’s been manipulating you, always hiding his ulterior motives.
and maybe that’s what frustrated him the most. how did he turn into the villain here, when it so obviously should’ve been you? he just wanted to bury you like one of his mistakes, forgotten in the past forevermore.
his revenge should’ve been quick, and swift. he shouldn’t have dragged it on like this. and here he is now, at a moral dilemma.
the sign dissolves from in front of you, resembling nothing more than sand falling to the cracked and broken cement below you.
“uh,” you snap your head to the voice. you almost forgot this was someone else's dream, “could you two please stop?”
you look back at jungwon, whose eyes are now wide in panic.
the dreamer advances towards the two of you. shit, you couldn’t let him touch either of you.
as you try to escape the dreamer, jungwon sees this situation as an opportunity and raises a wall between you and him, trapping you on the other side with the dreamer. this move could’ve been fatal if it weren’t for your quick thinking.
you melt the ground, leaving the dreamer behind on the other side. you only spare a second glaring at jungwon before he attacks you again. you can only continue playing defense as you’re too busy worrying about the dreamer to attack him back properly.
“can we stop this already?!”
“give me back my bottle. now.”
you can’t believe he’s being this immature right now, when both of your lives are in danger. the dreamer gets close to jungwon, and you pull his sleeve to move him away, but he starts folding the dream inward, throwing off your balance.
and there it is, shining inside one of the buildings. the gateway. all you had to do was push both you and jungwon through it, and escape this wretched nightmare forever.
but the more you two fought, it kept cracking more and more. at this rate, it could end up fractured. you had to get him through the gateway fast, it would be impossible to convince him to drink from the bottle and leave enough for you afterwards.
seeing you distracted, jungwon tackles you to the ground.
the sound of something shattering from under you rings in your ears. you don't have the heart to check it, but you have a feeling you know what it is already.
when you open your eyes, you see jungwon staring at the ground next to you.
there laid his escape. a broken bottle, liquid pouring all over the cement, reaching your clothes.
he finally looks up, searching for any sign of a gateway he could find.
you shove him off of your body, muttering curses to yourself. “look what you’ve done!” you yell at him before grabbing his sleeve again. with the weight of his actions occupying his thoughts, he barely even notices what you’re doing.
the buildings obey you, creating a path towards the barely functioning gateway. it could close any second if you’re not quick enough.
when he finally takes everything in, he looks at you, who’s running desperately. you pull him forward and jump in yourself afterwards, leaving nothing but a mess behind. you could only hope the dreamer isn’t traumatized from this experience like you were.
you roll on the floor from the impact of a rushed escape, the sudden jump shaking you up slightly, “you almost got us killed!” you immediately scold, getting up as fast as you fell. you continue stomping away until you’re out of the house.
he refuses to back down, “you’re always so damn selfish!” he knows it’s not true, but his emotions can’t help him from arguing, trying too hard to justify his actions to himself.
“ME? SELFISH?! AFTER WHAT YOU’VE JUST PULLED?”
“YOU DON’T GET TO YELL AT ME!”
“NO, YOU DON’T GET TO CALL ME SELFISH.” at this point, your breathing is irregular, and everything around you is blurry. the only focus is on him. specifically, the sudden horns that seem to be protruding out of his head, and the flawed morals he’s sitting so proudly on.
“ALL YOU KNOW HOW TO DO IS CARE ABOUT YOURSELF!”
“WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT ME?”
he has the audacity to point fingers at you, not knowing what you’ve been through. all he sees when he looks at you is a phantom. someone who kills dreams and hurts others. he doesn’t see a fellow shifter, a teenager, someone who lost a friend. someone who lost everything. he doesn’t see you as a person.
“SEE? IT’S ALWAYS ABOUT YOU!” he scoffs in disbelief of your behavior, finally taking a breath before continuing, “i don’t car—”
“it’s obvious you never cared,” you snap, “honestly, fuck you.”
his heart sank to the pits of hell. he wasn’t sure if he even had a heart anymore.
he’s never seen you in this state before. he’s never seen you so mad that there’s practically smoke blowing out of your head.
“look, i’m sorry, i was just
” he paused again, half-expecting you to cut him off like you’ve been doing. he didn’t prepare an apology and quite honestly, he had no idea what excuse he was supposed to use in this situation. “i’m just sorry.”
the look of pure betrayal in your eyes is enough to tell him he messed up badly, and you won’t forgive him that easily, but the least he could do right now is apologize.
“you know, i don’t hate visionists,” you watch his eyebrows shoot up at your statement, and his eyes flash in confusion, “but without a single doubt, i hate you.”
with that, you walk away. you don’t bother to look back for a second longer. you’ve said what you needed to say, and you’re more than ready to leave him behind.
his mind had been in a constant state of push and pull the whole time he’s been with you.
with the guilt consuming his every thought, he knows he made a mistake. his mind is no longer swaying with choices. he has made up his mind. he only happened to make it a little too late.
and now, you were walking away from him.
you, who represented change in his everyday. you, who shone in every dark nightmare.
he was letting you walk away.
and he regrets it already.
he’s done pretending it was all an act. he’s done pretending he hates you, when he’s done nothing but find genuine happiness in your presence. he’s done hurting you. he wishes he could stop you now, but your back is turned, and he’s already put a knife through it.
in all honesty, he liked doing your homework with you. you would barely even study, opting for gossiping instead. he found it cute when you tried to stay on topic, but kept getting distracted by the more interesting things to talk about. he didn’t mind paying for all of your meals. not when he got to share the food with you, trying new things he wouldn’t have otherwise, stealing your foods just to tease you.
before he even realized, the things he originally did to gain your trust, were the things he did because he wanted to. because he liked you.
it’s now he starts realizing what he’s done, and he’s not too sure he can let himself live if he doesn’t try to fix things.

“no.” yeeun says blankly before slamming the door on his face.
“wait– at least hear me out!”
there’s no response.
plan b. this was definitely against agency guidelines.
“what the fuck are you doing in my dreams.”
“i have a plan.”
“i wasn’t actually asking. get out.”
“yeeun, please.”
“jungwon, no.” she mocks.
plan c! third time’s a charm, right?
“yeeun, someone sent mail to you.”
“oh my gosh, throw it out.”
“why?”
“you don’t wanna know

jungwon was growing less and less confident after each attempt of reaching out to your roommate, and he was running out of ideas. damn, she was loyal. loyal enough to sneak into his dreams for you.
oh. she would sneak into his dreams for you.
“are you out of ideas already?” yeeun asks as jungwon stands where he did a couple days ago. he’s back at your front door, begging yeeun for help.
“i’m going to annoy you until you let me talk to you.” there was no reason to lie, or hide his motives. not anymore.
“mhm good luck with that.” and with that, she slams the door shut on his face once more.
jungwon tries again once more. and then again. and then again.
after another three days of trying, yeeun finally gives in.
“okay, if you say one stupid thing, i’m leaving your dream instantly, and you lose your chance. you understand?”
“okay, i understand.”
she gestures for him to speak.
taking a deep breath, he finally starts, “so, i was really stupid and i know that and i hurt them, and i regret it. it was just supposed to be something small for petty revenge but as we grew closer i was getting more and more frustrated – with them, but mostly myself for how i was lying to them – and that caused it all to explode and i went too far with my anger, but i have a plan.” he says all at once.
“what’s your plan?”
“i want to save their friend. i think i can pull her out of the dream.”
“huh? do you think you’re better than the agencies or what?”
“maybe not smarter, or as experienced, but i want to try. that’s more than anyone else is doing.”
“so why are you telling me this?”
“unfortunately, my boss found out about what i did.. i got my drink taken away.”
“and you want me to pretend to join the visionists to get a drink so i can give it to you.” she fills in the blanks jungwon’s laid out, “that
 isn’t a horrible plan.”
“i also need your help figuring out who it was. i narrowed it down to the missing cases, but i’ve never seen her before.”
“i have, i can help you with that.”
he nods, thanking yeeun for helping him before they start drafting a plan. something catches his eyes about the person yeeun pointed out as your friend. he carefully looked over her name that read, “jayun.” she was filed under “visionists.”
his heart breaks. you really devoted yourself to protecting shifters, joining the phantoms, so others wouldn’t face the same fate jayun did.
“yeeun? where are you going?” she stops in her tracks when you catch her about to sneak out.
“going for a late night walk.”
“am i crazy, or do you smell like jungwon?”
she backs up from you, “you know how he smells?”
“we did spend a lot of time together. whatever, it doesn’t matter. stay safe.”
“of course. goodnight, sweetie.”
“i wish you and him the best of luck.”
“...you know?”
“he was the one who sent the letter, i checked.”
“i’m sorry, i really wanted to help. he has a whole plan and everything to save,” she pauses, not wanting to open your wounds, “her.”
“i know. honestly, i’d do anything to have her back. if jungwon can make that happen, i hope his plan works out. good luck, you two.”
she hesitates before proposing, “do you want to come along? i think he really wants to apologize to you.”
“do you think he deserves it? a second chance.”
“i think that depends on you. do you want to give him a second chance?”
“this is a suicide mission.” you say after jungwon and yeeun enthusiastically tells you their plan. you felt bad shutting them down like this, especially when jungwon looked like he was going insane trying to find a solution, and yeeun was practically jumping out of her seat in excitement. but it was true.
the plan was simple enough; just go into the dream, find jayun, give her the drink, and save her.
of course, it wasn’t that simple because the drink only works in pulling shifters out of dreams, not any mental state.
“we’re going to be trapped with her, this is useless. if it was that easy, this wouldn’t be a problem in the first place.”
jungwon’s face deflates at your blunt responses, but keeps his hopes up, “no, i don’t mean give her the drink from the dreamer’s dream. we go into her dream, and save her from there.”
“you want to go into jayun’s dream?” he shakes his head, confirming his idea.
“i think it’ll work,” yeeun chimes in, “plus, once she’s out of the dream, won’t that allow the dreamer to wake up, too?”
“i’m not sure, nobody’s ever tried it before. i think we could try.” jungwon lets out a loud sigh of relief and yeeun jumps out of her seat to hug you.
yeeun goes to sign up as a visionist, and you lead jungwon to your old hideout with jayun to find an item that you could use to connect to her mind.
“were you and her that close?” he asks, looking around.
you hum in response. this place brought back memories, “the reason i joined the phantoms was because of her.”
“i’m really sorry.”
feeling the atmosphere getting heavier from the conversation, you change the conversation. pointing to an antique phonograph, “look, we bought this together! it was so cute, and when we walked in the store, it was playing our favorite song. we used to dance together.”
“you dance?”
“only with jayun.”
you find a way to start it up again, and it starts playing a soft tune. gently swaying to the song, you smile at the thought of dancing with her again.
“would you consider dancing with me?” jungwon asks quietly.
“you dance?”
“maybe.”
placing your hand on his, he starts moving the two of you to the beat of the song. his hands feel soft, like you’re holding clouds. his pretty eyes look into yours. you wonder what he sees now. was it the same phantom he hated, or were you someone completely different to him now?
the audio starts getting scratchy, leaving an ugly sound hanging in the air, “sorry, it must be broken.” you apologize quickly before going to turn it off. jungwon pulls away from you, but the nervous feeling in his stomach doesn’t leave him alone.
he decides to change the subject, “any updates from yeeun?”
“she hasn’t texted yet. i think we made good progress, though.”
“the phonograph would be a good item.”
“it would. i just really hope this works.” after a few more minutes of waiting, you get a text from yeeun to let you know she got the drink.
time worked differently in dreams. since you were entering the dream of someone who’s already in a dream, it would be difficult to know when she’s asleep. each hour, you’d try to connect to the phonograph in hopes of it letting you in, and every hour you’d find she’s still awake.
you decided to take turns staying up throughout the night. 3am. it’s your turn now. jungwon gently nudges you awake, letting you know it’s your turn now. you try to stay awake, while your eyes droop.
“if you’re really tired, i could stay up for you.” jungwon offers in a whisper.
“no, it’s fine.” you check if jayun’s asleep again by connecting to the phonograph.
“oh! yeeun, wake up. they just went into the dream.” jungwon exclaims, seeing your attempt was successful.
he grabs three bottles, and enters jayun’s dream. yeeun stays back in case jungwon tries betraying you again, or if there’s an issue. she’d be prepared to send in a rescue mission.
the dream was just as dark as you’d expect. with the lack of light, you couldn’t see anything, including jungwon.
“hello?” jungwon’s voice echoes in the nightmare, making you aware of his arrival.
“i’m here. where do you think she could be?”
“i guess we should look around.”
by looking, you’re assuming he meant feeling, since that’s all you could do at the moment.
the air was thick, almost like there was fog everywhere. everything felt surreal, even for a nightmare. you step carefully, with each sound beneath your feet startling you. you’d never been in a nightmare this eerie, usually because you were the one painting them. there was no element of surprise. you knew it was a nightmare, you knew it wasn’t real, and you knew what to expect.
you don’t have that information here. it feels like you’re stepping into an entirely different world every time you walk forward.
“jungwon?”
“yes?”
“i’m scared.”
“do you want me to hold your hand?”
“please.”
he stuffs the bottles in his pockets to free his hands, pulling you closer to him. small twigs snap from under you, and you feel the fog getting increasingly thicker.
all your senses are heightened in fear, making you hyper-aware of everything around you. that’s when you hear something moving.
unable to tell whether it’s jayun or something else, you stop in place to hear better. jungwon stops next to you.
“is everything okay?” he whispers.
“i think i heard something.”
“is there someone there?” you hear a third voice call out.
“jayun!” although risky, you can’t stop yourself from getting excited at the sound of your friend's voice, “we came to get you out. do you remember me?”
“oh my, oh.” jayun speaks quickly, her breathing already erratic, “how are you getting me out?”
jungwon pulls a bottle out of his pocket, “just drink what we give you. it’ll help you, i promise.” he says, walking towards her voice.
“stop! don’t touch me! you might get stuck here.”
he tries speaking in the calmest voice he can, trying to explain everything to her, “i won’t touch you. i know the risks, and that’s why i’m here.” he assures, “i’ll leave the bottle here. just pick it up and drink it, okay?”
“okay..” although still slightly shaky, her voice sounds calmer now as she bends down to pick up the drink.
you turn to jungwon, “are you sure this’ll work? since she’s the dreamer right now and not the shifter, what if the drink doesn’t work.”
“i guess we’ll see.” he crosses his fingers, and passes you a bottle as well.
you two drink it quickly. it could cause issues if the dreamer left before you could.
as the three of you finish gulping down the drink, you find yourself back at the hideout. yeeun interrogates you as soon as you come back.
“what happened? are you okay? did you find her? where is she?” she grabs your shoulders, looking at you as if she can’t believe you’re real.
“i’m okay. i’m not sure if it worked, but she should be at the hospital with the dreamer right now if it did.”
“what are we waiting for?” jungwon stands up, getting ready to head to jayun.
as soon as you arrive, jayun runs up to hug you, “holy shit i’m back!” she exclaims, “and you’ve grown so much! i’ve really missed you.”
you return the tight hug, “i missed you more i really can’t believe i finally have you back.”
jungwon smiles at the sight, happy to see you this happy.
“i’ll pay for everyone's dinner today!” he offers, to which you smile, turning to look at him.
“thank you so much for everything, jungwon.”
“it’s no problem.” he says sincerely before adding, “i’m rich, anyway.”
Tumblr media
dinner went as chaotic as you thought it would. jayun and yeeun hit it off, teaming up to annoy jungwon. the night was full of laughter, and good friends. there was just one thing missing that’s been sitting heavily on your chest since the night you realized it.
“can i talk to you?”
you look at jungwon, “what’s up?” he gestures for you to join him outside to talk privately, and you follow him, “so what did you want to talk about, angel?”
“i’m sorry.”
“you said that already,” you smile, but he doesn’t return it, “i forgive you.”
“i don’t think i was acting. i mean, i know i lied about why i started talking to you, but i didn’t lie about why i kept talking to you,” he confesses, “i admire you a lot. and you’re still pretty to me.”
“you sound like you like me right now.” you laugh.
“would you feel the same way?”
“well,” you pretend to ponder over his question, “i think
if you kissed me, i might not pull away.”
he leans in, and your heart only grows louder and louder. in between the space keeping the two of you apart, you see the universe. you’re too far away. you lean in closer, determined to close the space. his lips ghost over yours, and you raise your hands to hook them over his shoulders. the space between you is nothing. there’s just you, and him. he gently holds you, trying to keep the kiss slow.
you think you might be dreaming at this moment, jungwon feels too good to be real.
his soft hands holding your face tell you he’s real, you can feel him. and right now, he’s all that needs to be real to you.
in his arms, you’re in heaven, and he’s your angel. he’s your jungwon.

“Oh my gosh, no way!”
“Yeeees.”
“No, it can’t be possible!”
“I’m telling you, it IS possible.”
Your best friend, Shin Yuna, was nodding so fervently that you were afraid her head would fall off. Meanwhile, you couldn’t stop gaping like a fish out of water, trying to make sense of this situation. It just didn’t make sense. It really didn’t.
“Couldn’t you have mistaken him for someone else?” You quirked an eyebrow, tentative, hoping that Yuna had actually just mistaken the boy for someone else.
“I’ve seen him with my own two eyes, okay? I put my contacts in today,” she justified matter-of-factly, letting out a huff as if you had hurt her by implying that she might have seen it wrong. You really wished she had seen it wrong because dear gosh, how could Kim Sunoo, out of all people, be at your school on the very first day of your senior year?
Kim Sunoo: your archnemesis, your worst enemy, your greatest nightmare
No matter how you wanted to put it, Kim Sunoo was someone you wished to avoid at all costs. Even if you were offered all the money in the world, you wouldn’t want to be in the same room with him. Okay, maybe, if it was about all the money in the world, you would, but still

Kim Sunoo was someone you desperately wished to avoid, especially apart from the times you were forced to be around him either way. Every year since freshman year of high school, you had met him at the annual national high school debate competition because both your team and his team had made it to the finals. In freshman year, his team had won. In sophomore year, your team had won. Last year, his team had won. Now this year, you were desperately hoping to win with your team. Let’s just say that both of you were a bit too competitive for your own good, both during and outside of the competition when you were bickering to no end, and that had created a tiny bit of tension between you two. (And by tiny, you meant an enormous one.)
“Aaaaaaanyways,” Yuna broke the silence, snapping her fingers in front of your face to regain your attention. “Even if he’s at our school, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he will-”
She was cut off by the squeals around the classroom when the door opened and Mr Bang, your homeroom teacher, walked into the classroom. Not alone, but with someone else. And that someone else just so happened to be Kim Sunoo. He wore your school’s uniform and neat cotton pants, and he was holding onto the straps of his backpack while a giddy smile was playing on his lips.
“Oh my gosh, who is he?”
“Wow, he’s so handsome!”
“Do we have a new classmate?”
Such exclaims could be heard around the classroom, and you felt the need to puke when you saw how lovingly the girls looked at him. As if they were giving him the heart eyes already. If only they knew what kind of a person he was

“Attention, please!” Mr Bang announced and knocked on the teacher’s desk a few times to quiet down the murmuring students. When everyone finally shut up about the newly arrived student who still looked as if he had been the happiest person on Earth to walk into your classroom, he continued. “We have a new student in our class from today. His name is Kim Sunoo, and he has recently moved from Suwon. Please, welcome him with open arms and a round of applause!”
A few girls started clapping a little too excitedly while some guys started hollering as if they had been watching a football match. You kind of had an idea why, but Hwang Intak just had to confirm it when he exclaimed:
“Yeah, finally! There are more boys than girls!” He shrieked as if he had won a round of his favourite game (a sight too common during breaks when he was immersed in his beloved phone). He boasted a boyish grin that didn’t fade even when Mr Bang warned him to keep his voice down.
Yuna glanced in your way, curious to see your reaction, but you averted your eyes from her face to the newly arrived student, only to catch him already staring at you. He seemed less surprised to see you there, but it wasn’t that weird considering that he knew the school you had come from, so if he was going to be transferred here, he might have already prepared himself for the big reunion. Unlike you who couldn’t believe your luck (or therefore lack of), and wished that he wouldn’t want to continue doing the one thing you loved the most, but-
“And he’s going to join the debate club, but I guess we don’t need to introduce him to you since I’ve heard his team won last year’s competition,” Mr Bang stated, and bamm, there, all hopes of not having to compete alongside him instead of against him lost.
You tore your gaze off the boy’s face, chewing on your lower lip to hold back the curse that was about to fall off your lips. No. You couldn’t lose your cool. The best thing you could do was to show him who was the bigger person here, and act all nonchalant. He deserved silent treatment at best. Yeah, it was best if you tried to ignore him as much as possible.
So you decided, and that actually worked
until you actually got to the first debate practice of the semester, the first one you had with Sunoo present.
Tumblr media
Miss Kim was a good teacher. It could be seen that she loved organising the debate club’s practices, but she was a tad bit too excited to have Sunoo in the club, someone she had actually seen with her own two eyes at the previous years’ competitions. She looked at the boy as if he had been the seventh wonder of the Earth, and you had to physically force yourself to not put your eyes out upon seeing how pumped up she was.
“Why don’t we start with a round of introductions?” Miss Kim clapped her hands, looking from one student to another. She looked like she assumed that it was the best idea she could have come up with. No, actually, she probably believed that it was the best idea.
“Oh, oh, I’ll go first!” Intak flung his arms into the air, childish excitement lacing his words. When no one objected, and Miss Kim also gave him the green light, he continued. “Hey, dude! My name is Hwang Intak, and I’ve been a part of the debate club since sophomore year. My parents made me join the club because apparently, I have too much energy, and my football practices don’t wear me out enough, so I have to spare my extra energy somewhere. Plus, I’m a bit too talkative for my own good,” he chattered as if they had been best friends already, and fist bumped the guy who sat beside him.
The awkward thing about sitting in a circle was not being able to hide your face, hence your facial expressions. So you were pretty sure that Sunoo caught sight of your eye-roll, but you couldn’t care less. Intak befriended everyone, it was no surprise he could get along well with the boy from the very beginning.
“I’ll go next then,” Ahn Yujin announced when the silence became a bit too awkward. She pushed her long locks over her shoulder, letting them pour over her back like a waterfall. “My name is Ahn Yujin, and I’ve been a member of the club since freshman year, but you probably remember. I’m hoping to become a politician or at least a councilwoman in the future, so debating comes in handy, and earns me a few good points on my CV in the long run,” she explained briefly yet thoroughly.
That was who she was; Yujin knew what she wanted to do, and how she wanted to achieve it. She planned in the long run, and she didn’t do anything foolish to mess up her future chances. That’s why you shared her work morale: both of you were hard-working and determined to achieve what you wanted. Even if it meant that sometimes you burned out.
Sunoo gave her a friendly smile and a bob of his head before Miss Kim prompted the shy boy sitting on the other side of Sunoo to speak up.
“Hi! My name is Yoo Kangmin. Honestly
” The boy started, scratching the back of his neck a bit sheepishly. “I’m here because my parents wanted me to develop some social skills. I’m usually very quiet and reserved, so they wanted me to learn how to stand up for myself, and how to disagree with someone. Though I’m not sure how that’s going
” His voice trailed off by the end, his gaze darting between different parts of the room. Kangmin was so shy, it was honestly adorable, no wonder Yuna felt the need to reassure him in her own lovingly nagging way:
“Come on! You’re doing great!” The girl hollered, and you were sure that she would have patted the boy on the back if they had been sitting beside each other. Yuna was like a cheerleader for the whole team; even if she might have been impatient a lot of times and gave in to others’ reasoning because she got fed up debating someone, she was usually the one who cheered everyone on.
Just like this time when awkwardness started to be a bit too noticeable in the room, she decided that it was best if she went next:
“I’m Shin Yuna, by the way. I’m Y/n’s best friend, and actually, I’ve joined the club because of her, and sometimes I’m not even sure what I’m doing here, but I like arguing with people,” she explained with a casual shrug. As she turned her head towards your deadpan expression, she gave you a wink and turned back to look at Sunoo.
It’s true that you might have persuaded her to join the debate club because she really did enjoy arguing with people, but it didn’t mean that she needed to call you out like that. Especially not in front of Kim Sunoo! For god’s sake, did she really have to throw you under the bus?
You were thankful that Miss Kim prompted Taehyun to go on with his introduction which went like:
“I’m Kang Taehyun. I believe learning how to debate is a valuable skill that can come in handy no matter what field you choose, so I’ve decided to give it a try, and haven’t looked back ever since,” he justified as eloquently as always. Taehyun might have been the same age as you all, but he seemed the most mature out of all of you, and it did show in the way he spoke. And in the way he disapprovingly glanced in Intak’s direction when he was trying to spin his rubber on his pencil or playing basketball with the bin. They seemed to be on the opposite end of the childish spectrum.
With the students’ introductions coming full circle, you realised that you were the only one left who hadn't done so. Thus, with a resigned sigh, you broke the silence.
“Well, I don’t think I need to introduce myself,” you shrugged, hoping to get away with only this much, but Miss Kim looked at you as if you had set the room on fire, so you continued. “I’ve joined the club because my sister also won the high school debate championships, so I kind of had to follow her footsteps to prove to my parents that I’m as good as her.”
Which was true, and no one was surprised to hear that since they had all heard of the success of your sister and her team, her being only two years older than you and having attended the same high school as you. Well, everyone except Sunoo, obviously, who just had to butt in and ask:
“Why did you give in?”
That was an absurd question. Coming from him, it was even more absurd. If he wanted to nitpick your life choices because you despised each other for years now, you wouldn’t let him have his way just like that.
“Do you even have a sibling?” You raised an eyebrow challengingly, and when he shook his head, you scoffed. “Well, then, you don’t know what it’s like; the pressure of being the younger sibling,” you bit out, hoping that it was enough to shut him up because clearly, he didn’t know what he was talking about if he was an only child.
Yet, Sunoo being Sunoo, he just couldn’t let it be.
“I think pressure is pressure, even if it comes from being a younger sibling or merely from being a member of society. It doesn’t justify why you should have given in,” Sunoo counter-attacked in such an eloquent yet smart-ass way that you felt this immense urge in you to punch him in the face. Hard. And quick. So that it would hurt even more.
“Pressure might be pressure, but when you’re exposed to it all day, every day because you’re living with that pressure, and it haunts you even at school because everyone knows who your sister is, it’s not something that you can just shrug off.”
“Pressure isn’t something physical. It can’t follow you anywhere. It’s something in you that is triggered by it that doesn’t let you forget about what people think of you, or what they are supposed to think of you given your sister’s background,” he told you casually as if he had been merely playing with words when you felt like he was attacking you, throwing daggers at you while he was mocking you. If he assumed that you were a heartless person who couldn’t be swayed just because she was good at debating and defending her opinion, then so be it, but you wouldn’t let him lecture you about your life.
“Oh yeah? So are you saying that I’m just overly emotional? Maybe it’s because I’m a girl and-”
And you would have called him out even more if Miss Kim hadn’t clapped her hands to gain your attention and to put an end to this whole conversation between you two. Even if it might have been a good example for a debate, you hated how it made you feel. When you were to defend global warming activists or you were agreeing to the use of school uniforms, it was all good, you could gather enough arguments to prove your point and go along with it. Yet, when it was about your own life and your own feelings, and they were criticised by someone you despised with all your heart, you swore you could have started a fight.
“Oh, this is getting interesting. Should I bring popcorn next time?” Intak joked, smiling widely as he looked around for laughs and approving smiles, but his lips curled downwards when he saw your deadly glare and heard the complete silence following his words. “Nevermind,” he retreated back, chuckling nervously as he asked Miss Kim for the topic for the next practice. Intak never inquired about it, so you assumed that he learned his lesson.
Right then and there, you decided that Kim Sunoo was even worse than you could previously have thought, and you would make sure to make his senior year as much of a hell as possible.
Tumblr media
Turns out Sunoo could easily befriend people, almost as easily as Intak. He even sat down to have lunch with your debate group the day after the first debate practice, having seemingly very interesting conversations with Intak and Taehyun by his side (and Kangmin shyly listening to them, occasionally speaking up to indicate that he was listening). Which left you sulking on the other side of the 8-person dining table, pushing your chopsticks into the noodles a bit more forcefully than intended.
“It’s actually not that bad if you think about it. If our teamwork turns out to be good with him, we can perform even better. And it’s not just me, there are probably studies about it somewhere online,” Yuna mused out loud as she was watching your facial expression.
“But if one person absolutely hates him while the rest are on good terms, then how does that affect the team performance?” You inquired matter-of-factly, raising a challenging eyebrow as if your best friend could give you the answer you were looking for, but even she opened her mouth only to close it after a few seconds. When Shin Yuna couldn’t defend her point, it was game over.
“Coming to think of it though,” Yujin chirped in between two bites, her foreboding tone earning your and your best friend’s attention. “What will we do with 7 members? We can only qualify with a 6-member team,” the girl asked absentmindedly, yet you immediately shared a glance with your best friend, lips parting at her reasonable inquiry.
She was right. You had always been lucky because your debate club had 6 members and you could only qualify with 6 members that were later distributed into two 3-membered teams in the actual competition. The scores of the two teams added up as one team was ‘for’ and the other was ‘against’ a different argument as it was only fair. Yet, you would only know at the competition which three members would form a group and what side they would take since everything was selected on the competition days.
“I mean, I would gladly let Sunoo have his time to shine since he’s definitely better than me and-” Yuna yelped when you hit her shoulder, sending her a deadly glare.
“You are not going to drop out, so that Sunoo can take your place! Understood?” You lowered your voice not to gather the said boy’s attention (not that he would glance in your way), and Yuna pouted, massaging hair blade bone while nodding fervently. “I think we need to discuss this with Miss Kim,” you announced as you looked from Yuna to Yujin, and both girls agreed, saying that there should be no room for disagreements when you actually needed to apply with the list of the selected members, and the deadline was only about two weeks from now on.
Needless to say, when you shared your concern with Miss Kim, she wasn’t that delighted to realise that a problem was to be solved, and she couldn’t help it. If she wanted to be fair, she needed to give everyone an equal chance to participate (even though Kangmin insisted that Sunoo could take his place), so after another heated debate how to solve this problem, you all decided on a mini competition where all 7 members would participate and the already retired ex-debate club teacher, Miss Kang, would be the judge because Miss Kim already knew you all too well.
The date was settled, you only needed to make sure that everyone was prepared to gather enough arguments for both sides (the topic was whether social media was aiding teenagers these days or ruining their lives) because just like at the real competitions, you would only get to know which side you would be on when you would get there. So you secretly (or not so secretly) bombarded the guys with resources and smoothly tried to discuss some details with the girls all because you wanted to make sure that they were as prepared as possible. Meanwhile, you tried your best to avoid Kim Sunoo at all costs even though he was your classmate now, so it was pretty impossible.
No wonder you managed to run into him (quite literally) in the hallway after your last class a few days before the mini competition.
“Do you know that I actually know that you’re helping the original members of the debate club, right?” He quirked an eyebrow, lacing his arms in front of his chest as if he was older than you or superior to you. Huh, what was he thinking?
“And? I don’t think you’re making any sense.”
“I could call this unfair treatment or discrimination, but it seems that the guys don’t think that it’s big enough of a deal because they are doing the same with me,” he mentioned casually, but it felt like he was dropping a bomb right onto you. Maybe it wasn’t even that coincidental that you had managed to run into him that day, maybe he had actually wanted to rub it in your face.
“What do you mean?” You played the innocent little girl, wanting him to admit what they were doing (even though you were already planning ways to strangle the guys after this).
“They’re preparing for the mini competition with me. They say because it all might be new to me how things are organised here, they share with me what they have gathered and we sometimes even discuss a few questions.”
“Oh yeah, I know that. Don’t worry.” No, you didn’t know that, but you wanted to keep your pride, so you forced a smile onto your face, keeping the eye-contact. It actually went on for a few seconds, him staring at you while the ends of his lips were slowly curling upwards, and you wished you could wipe that off his face, but the only thing that came to your mind was that he actually had nice eyes.
Wait, what?
No. Nope. Kim Sunoo didn’t have nice eyes. Maybe they were a warm mahogany colour and maybe they were like little crescents, especially when his lips stretched, but no, you weren’t looking at him like that. No absolute way.
“Then, it’s all good, I guess. Healthy competition is always good for a team’s performance,” he mused out loud, and you were sure that if Yuna were there to be beside you, she would definitely agree with him. Instead, you just nodded, mumbling something about the fact that it was definitely needed according to the rules of the qualifications anyways, and left without looking back.
You felt like you were running away from more than just your enemy; you were running away from your own thoughts as well.
Tumblr media
The thing is: you couldn’t push the mini competition’s day any further because it was the only day Miss Kang was free that week (turns out she was going a trip afterwards with a group of other retired teachers, they were going to the seaside for a few days), and it was also the last Friday before the deadline for applications.
Yet, Intak just had to be missing from the after school debate practice when you were supposed to be having your mini competition, and you were almost tearing your own hair out when he didn’t say a word for a while, only to receive a call from him in your 13th minute of waiting for him.
“What? At the hospital? But how?” Miss Kim shrieked, holding her phone to her ears as if she was holding onto the last bits of her sanity, but you could share the sentiment. What was Intak doing at the hospital? “And how long? Okay, sure
Rest as much as possible, and please, be careful next time
Yes, I’m going to tell them, too
 Yes, don’t worry.”
With that, Miss Kim ended the call and nearly dropped her phone onto the table in front of her. She let out a long sigh, the only sound that could be heard in the dead silent room, then turned to Miss Kang who was already impatiently tapping on her notebook with her fingers.
“I’m sorry, Miss Kang. It seems that we have called you for nothing,” she started, already breaking into a frown after her announcement. Before Miss Kang could voice out her indignation though, she continued. “Unfortunately, Intak won’t be able to join us today or until the application deadline because he broke his leg during football practice, and he needs to stay in the hospital for the weekend following his surgery. He says that everything happens for a reason, and that Sunoo should take his place. It’s not like he could move freely when the actual competition rolls by because his recovery might take 2 months.”
“OMG, that’s terrible!” Yuna exclaimed, absolutely horrified, and the only thing you could do was to nod. Yep, that was terrible. Absolutely terrible. You felt bad for Intak for his condition. You felt bad for Kangmin who looked like he had just missed his chance to chicken out and was about to faint. And you felt bad for yourself as well because it meant that you would need to prepare for the actual real competition with Sunoo by your side, and if you were successful, that didn’t mean just the preliminaries but the final competition as well.
“Jesus christ, that is terrible,” you hummed under your breath, and Yuna held onto your hand while she was trying to hold back her tears. Only if she knew why you were mopping so bad. It was as if ever since you had met Kim Sunoo, a small dose of him appeared in your life every single day and turned things even worse.
This was terrible, and it was going to be terrible in the future as well, you thought as you glanced in Sunoo’s direction who looked the most dumbfounded out of everyone, insisting that he wanted to talk to Intak. Miss Kim said that the boy’s wish was final though, so there was no need to object, but you had the debate you had been preparing for nevertheless, although everyone appeared a bit disheartened. Even Sunoo himself did.
Which was surprising, but you had to realise that maybe even he had his conscience. Not that it meant that you would think that he was suddenly a good guy. Oh no, pff, no. Never. He was just. Well, at least he wasn’t an asshole about this.
Tumblr media
The preparations for the competition went smoothly. Or at least, as smoothly as possible considering how competitive you and Sunoo were and how much fate liked to play with you, always putting him and you on different sides of the argument. You disagreed to clone animals while he defended the right to make a small sacrifice to help out more people, you insisted on keeping school uniforms while he was against the uniformed look for daily use, he took the side of those who said that democracy was the best form of government while you disagreed and so on.
You were always disagreeing with each other, and it seemed like you did the same outside of practices, too. Sometimes it was about something as petty as him liking mint chocolate and you saying that it tasted like toothpaste while other times it was about something more personal like him calling your perfectionist tendencies self-destructive while you argued that you had gotten to this point in your life because of how hard you tried to please everyone.
It wasn’t that Sunoo was wrong all the time; it was more like you hated to admit when he was right because you didn’t want to share anything in common with him. Though you did share a lot of common things starting from the fact that you attended the same school, were in the same class, were in the debate club and prepared extra hard for the competitions. It was just
you started to realise that maybe he wasn’t that terrible of a person, but you wouldn’t have admitted it for the world.
Not even when he suddenly put chocolate-covered almonds on your desk before one of your debate practices, something that he had never done before, and something that you had definitely not seen coming (and something that made your heart do a silly little turn, but that wasn’t the main point).
“What’s this?” You furrowed your eyebrows in question, examining the famous vending machine snack that you liked to get for yourself. One: almonds were said to be effective for brain power, something that you desperately needed around this time of the year. Two: it was chocolate, and it was scientifically proven that it produced serotonin which was also known as the happiness hormone.
So it was definitely the best kind of snack you could have gotten for yourself considering that you were a senior on top of preparing for the debate competitions, but you wouldn’t have thought that Sunoo had taken notice of your snacking habits.
“It’s just
The vending machine malfunctioned and pushed two of these out, so I’ve thought you might want it. The others don’t seem to want it,” Sunoo justified with a shrug, and although you wanted to call him out on lying (because he hadn’t been going around the classroom, asking the others if they had wanted to eat it, that much you could have noticed in the past few minutes), you held yourself back.
“Why did you want to get this?” You threw the question at him, not having heard anything of his love for chocolate-covered almonds even though Intak had been talking about his blooming friendship with Sunoo so much since he couldn’t join your classmates to play football during breaks that you felt like you knew more about Sunoo through him than you would have ever known for the rest of your life. Then again, Intak got along well with everyone, and then again, he had just broken his leg, so he still needed to use crutches to walk, hence he couldn’t do anything else but talk to those around him.
Sunoo looked perplexed for a moment, but tried to shrug it off and play it cool.
“Well, it’s chocolate after all. Since they don’t have mint chocolate, it’s better than nothing.”
“Right,” you bobbed your head, only half-believing his explanation, but reached for the bag of almonds nevertheless. He took notice of your approval and was about to leave for his own desk when you cleared your throat. “Thanks,” you blurted out, hoping that he wouldn’t take advantage of your politeness and tease you over thanking him for anything because you swore you would send him a deadly glare if he did so.
Thankfully, he turned around for only a few seconds, let his lips curl upwards and then continued to walk towards his desk. You swore that you could see Yuna grin to herself beside you, but Miss Kim walked into the classroom right then, and your best friend didn’t have the time to tease you about your little interaction with the boy.
Tumblr media
The truth is; you were a good team. Even with Sunoo replacing Intak (who, by the way, insisted on going to the practices and being your cheering squad
maybe not with pom poms but with his crutches), it was as if the dynamics hadn’t changed. You worked together well, and everyone was determined to do their best during the preparations which led to good results. Excellent results, on top of that, as Miss Kim would say because you were reaching the finals without any mishaps.
In the meantime, Sunoo had become a part of your friend circle, and it was as if he had always been there. He joked around with others, Yuna shared the latest gossip with him very eagerly, Yujin liked discussing controversial topics with him off-debate practices, Taehyun had already pulled a prank on him, and even Kangmin had warmed up to him, not to mention Intak who frequently called him ‘bestie’ and ‘dude’. Sunoo even joined you all for lunch at the canteen, frequenting your usual place instead of sitting with others.
You had gotten to know a lot about him during these casual conversations; about how he had moved to Seoul with his family from Suwon because his father had gotten a new job; about how bad the teamwork had been with his debate team back in Suwon and how much his teammates had hated when he had suggested practising more; about how he had been the class president in middle school, about what foods were his favourites and so on. Bit by bit, you had realised that Sunoo was just an ordinary boy with his occasionally sassy moments and bickering, and he teased you only because you teased him back. He wasn’t that bad of a guy.
You had also began to notice how much he bit down on his lower lip when he was nervous or how his eyes were darting between different parts of the classroom when he was pondering over an answer; how his eyes turned into little crescents when he was laughing hard or how his voice got higher when he was offended and tried to justify himself. Gosh, he was such a drama queen sometimes! Yuna liked to remind you though that you too were a drama queen of some kind (a perfect combination, she added with a mischievous smile, but you merely hit her shoulder in response).
So basically you could say that you were on good terms (and actually talking terms) while you were preparing for the competition, but first and foremost, you were both seniors, and studying didn’t stop even when you were preparing for the finale.
No wonder you hit up the library for a Friday afternoon study session, revising your notes for your upcoming History, Maths and English tests, and it didn’t seem like you were the only one who thought of it as the perfect time and place to study.
“Hey!” Sunoo greeted you cheerfully as he hopped down on the seat beside yours. You looked up from your notebook, gifting the boy with a surprised albeit friendly smile. A few weeks ago, it would have been a rather outrageous situation for you. Heck, you might have even stood up from the desk, letting him study there by himself because you wouldn’t be able to tolerate his presence more than it was absolutely necessary.
However, this time, you merely pulled your books closer to you, so that he would have more space on the desk.
“Hey!” You greeted him back, watching as he packed his books out of his backpack one after another. At the sight, you decided to ask about his reason for stopping by the library. “Preparing for next week’s tests?”
“Yeah. You too?” He hummed, busy reaching deep into his bag. You nodded, telling him that the three upcoming tests were all you could think about for the past few days (and nights). The boy shared your sentiment, and when he managed to settle down well, he didn’t turn to his books. Instead, he kept his eyes on you.
“Do you want to discuss the topics together?” Sunoo suggested casually. You could literally see Yuna’s grinning face in front of you because if she were to hear what the boy had said, she would be surely teasing you about it, saying that it would be a private study session. She would be right though because it was the first time you two would be spending time alone without the others being around.
Odd, you thought to yourself. Not the fact that it would be the first time, but because it didn’t scare you. It didn’t disgust you. It was just
what it was. Plus, since you had begun to accept the fact that Kim Sunoo wasn’t the worst person that could have been transferred to your school, it didn’t particularly make you feel frustrated to be associated with him.
“Yeah, sure,” you gave in, trying to suppress Yuna’s chiming voice in your head. You were just studying after all, right? It wasn’t about anything else.
Except that it was because even though you started with just studying, sharing notes and discussing some topics that were tough for the both of you, occasionally looking up some online forums to have your questions answered, it turned into more of a conversation than a study session by the end.
At one time, you even laughed out loud at the boy’s joke, so loud that the librarian told you to keep quiet.
“Gosh, that librarian’s so scary!” Sunoo turned back to you when he made sure that the woman was out of hearing range. You snickered into the paws of your hoodie, trying to conceal your laughter after seeing the elderly woman’s horrified expression.
“I know. Kangmin said that he had a recurring nightmare in junior year after the librarian had shouted his head off for one drop of water on one page of a rented book,” you recalled, still chuckling. Your heart was light, lighter than it had been an hour or so before, and you knew what was the reason.
“You guys seem to be really good friends,” Sunoo mused as he rested one of his shoulders on the opened book in front of him, turning towards you with his body. Such a casual sight would have really been impossible some time ago, but look at you! Willingly sharing with him how you had all become friends.
“Yeah. The debate club got us together. Before that, I’ve only had Yuna, but we’ve known each other since elementary school, so that’s a bit different. Yet, here, everyone felt a bit unfamiliar until we got together for the debate practices and became friends.”
“I wish it was the same with me at my old school, but most of my team members were there for the extra after school activities or possible future opportunities. It was hard to make them work when they had an attitude like that,” the boy shared sincerely, bitterness lacing his words.
Since he seemed like the type who got along well with everyone (okay, maybe not with you in the beginning, but you had your reasons), you had a difficult time imagining him being the dictator in his previous debate team because no one else had wanted to work. It seemed that the reason his team had managed to win in previous years was because of his hard-work only.
“I’m sorry,” you blurted out, finding yourself sympathising with him because you knew how much it would have sucked if your team members had been slacking off or they had been absolute assholes.
“No, don’t be!”
“But you have us now,” you confessed without thinking twice about it, but you realised only how emotional it must have sounded when you caught sight of that surprised glint in the boy’s warm orbs. You cleared your throat, uncomfortable with the way his stare made you feel. “I mean, we are your friends. I guess?”
You faltered a bit by the end, and if anything, that just gave you away even more. You weren’t good with words related to your own feelings. You had never been, let alone with a boy whom you had hated only a few months ago. Maybe he knew that just as well, maybe he had just been waiting for a time like this because in the next moment, he said:
“You guess? Do you want to be something more?”
He raised an eyebrow as well, an almost challenging one, and instead of fervently denying it like you should have (like you would have if it had been you a few months ago), you were rendered speechless. You could only be saved because the librarian came up to you to tell you to leave if you wanted to keep talking, and without a word, you turned back to your books, hiding the fact that you were blushing in the meantime.
This was so not the study session you had expected

Tumblr media
Your face still burned whenever you were reminded of Sunoo’s question about being something more than friends. You wanted to shout into his face that no, you absolutely would not love to be more than friends, thank you so much. Being a senior with all the exams coming up, teachers giving you extra homework and assignments to prepare well, uncertainties regarding your future and having the final debate competition on your plate was more than enough drama that you would have wanted to invest in. You had your friend group as well, you were fine on your own, so perfectly fine that you didn’t need anybody else to fill a so-called nonexistent empty void inside of you

But. And there’s always a but. It wasn’t about Sunoo being the missing piece of your puzzle or whatever cringe-worthy lines kdramas threw at you these days, it was about you feeling more comfortable around him than any other boy in your life. And like not on the friendly comfortable level because that could be Intak or Taehyun, too (Kangmin too but you weren’t sure that the boy was equally as comfortable around you as you were towards him). It was about being comfortable enough to share your worries, struggles and your down moments with someone who had every right to hate you for how you had acted in the past towards him. Yet, still, he cared about you. His messages leading up to the finale were more and more frequent. He remembered the smallest details about you like what you liked from the canteen food and gave you his side dishes that you preferred. He was there to comfort you when he found you crying in the back yard of the school, putting yourself down after completely failing a History test.
And the looks he gave you
they made you feel some sort of way, and suddenly, when a love song came on the radio, you didn’t want to puke because you felt like it was relatable. Yet, love? Gosh, how could you have fallen in love with Kim Sunoo?
So no, you didn’t bring up the question ever again, and the boy didn’t do so either, so you made yourself believe that it was because he had been merely joking. That helped you move on with the preparations for the finale, helped you concentrate on winning this for your team, your school and for yourself. One last time before you were no longer a high school student.
“I’m telling you, guys. You might not have me, and that’s a serious drawback, but hey, maybe you will thank me for breaking my leg,” Intak joked around as you were all standing in the corridor, waiting to be called in for the final debate when the big day had finally come. He still had his crutches, but that smile on him was ever so radiant, and that helped you all to not feel so bad about not having him on your team this year.
“Because you think you could have won Sunoo over in our mini competition?” Taehyun teased with a side-glance, and you were sure that if the athlete didn’t have his crutches, he would have easily smacked the other boy in the side. Instead, he just pouted, and upon the otherwise adorable sight, even Kangmin’s lips curled upwards.
“We’re all going to be great, don’t worry! We aren’t even against Sunoo’s old team, so I’m pretty sure we’ll nail this. Around 99.9% sure,” Yuna chirped in, reminding you that your opponent was the team who had always been 3rd place ever since your team had entered the competitions. This year though, Sunoo’s old team had been eliminated in the preliminary rounds, just another proof that he had been the ace in his team, not someone else.
“Yeah, we’ve got this!”
“Let’s do well since it’s our last time!” You hollered after Yujin, and you all put your hands in the middle of your little circle, one upon the other. You tried to ignore the slight shiver down your spine when you put your hand on Sunoo’s, but you couldn’t ignore Yuna’s knowing glance.
After your cheer, you felt a bit less nervous, but before you were called in, you caught Sunoo’s stare, and when your eyes locked, his lips turned into the most reassuring smile ever, and he even gave you a thumbs-up. You smiled at him, thankful, and averted your eyes almost immediately, feeling your face flush.
Thankfully, there was no time to waste because the events picked up their pace around you. You felt more and more confident the more time went by, and you felt like your team was really all in this together. The other team was good too, but they wavered more often, and they were less confident in their claims whenever you tried to raise an argument about what they said. While coming up with ideas and presenting them, you didn’t think about winning or losing, you just tried to prove to the others and the judges that you believed in what you said, and that you could back up your words.
No wonder you felt like you had run a marathon when you were over the final part of the competition and only the winner’s announcement was left. All three of you girls immediately went to the women’s room, chit-chatting about how you were feeling, recalling certain parts of your arguments, contemplating whether you were good enough and so on. When you went back to the classroom assigned as the waiting room, you saw that the boys did the same.
Despite the slight tension in the air over the uncertain results, your little team had a good chat until you were called in for the winner’s announcement. As you made your way to the stage, walking beside your team members of four years (or only a few months with Sunoo), you were hit by the past memories; the yell of frustration when Intak had decided to pull a prank on Kangmin when you had told him to take the practice seriously for once, the tears of annoyance when everything had seemed to go wrong and unsuccessful practices had become the tip of the iceberg, the tears of joy when you had first won the national competition, the laughter shared over the pizza Taehyun had bought for you all when Intak had been complaining that he had been hungry and that’s why he couldn’t concentrate on his tasks, the tea Yuna had always spilled about the latest school drama, the book reviews Yujin had always given involuntarily even though most of you wouldn’t read what she read, and the more and more frequent times Kangmin had seemed to come out of his shell
and Sunoo’s trademark laughter and crescent-like smile whenever he had found the boys’ joke funny or tried to share his own ones.
Everything came back all at once, and as you were standing there beside the others, you felt a bit emotional. And a bit perplexed when you felt someone’s hands brush yours.
“It’s all okay. You did great,” Sunoo whispered beside you, and when you looked down at your hand, you saw the exact moment he reached for yours. Your eyes shot up to his face, but he was merely smiling, and god damnit, you found yourself smiling, too!
“And now, let me announce the winners of the 22nd Annual National Debate Competition for High School Students
” The host started as she opened the envelope, and you felt your heart skip a beat when she looked up from the paper, ready to finally say the name of the winner. Unbeknownst to you, you squeezed Sunoo’s hands in yours when the crowd erupted into claps. “Seoul Hybe High School!”
You didn’t register for a moment what happened, but in the next, you already found yourself abruptly hugging the person beside you: who happened to be Sunoo. He hugged you back, his arms lacing around your waist, and you only realised what you had just done when you caught sight of Yuna’s grin over Sunoo’s shoulder.
Timidly, you backed away, tucking a loose strand of hair behind your ear, clearing your throat in an attempt to hide your embarrassment. Sunoo, on the other hand, was full of smiles, and he even dared to ask:
“So is that a yes?”
“A what?” You furrowed your eyebrows, not knowing what he meant by that.
“A yes to my question.”
“What question?” Your eyes widened in anticipation at the possibility of him referring to the question you thought that he had long forgotten, but when he confirmed your hope, you almost fainted on the spot.
“That you want to be something more than just my friend?” Sunoo asked straight-forwardly, taking one step closer with an almost amused smile hiding in the corner of his lips.
“Hey, y/n, we were just talking that-” Yujin came up to the two of you, a wide smile plastered onto her face, but when she caught sight of your perplexed expression and Sunoo’s closeness, she exchanged a glance with your best friend who couldn’t stop wiggling her eyebrows. Taehyun looked as if he had known everything all along while Kangmin looked around, confused. You were sure that even Intak from the crowd would be able to tell what was going on.
“Oh my gosh, please, continue! We’ll be outside,” Yuna announced triumphantly, already pushing the others off the stage.
“What is going on?” Kangmin blinked innocently, looking from one friend to the other, and Yuna promised him that she would tell him everything as they were walking away from you two.
“Go, boy! Just be confident!” Taehyun hollered before they got lost in the sea of people congratulating them, and yet, you felt like no one else was around the two of you when Sunoo looked at you so expectantly. That radiant smile of his was enough to make you go weak in the knees, and it was almost laughable how you had wished to wipe that smirk off his face a few months ago, but now
Maybe you wanted the same, but lovingly.
“I-I don’t know
” You mumbled when you finally found your voice, but when you caught sight of hurt flashing across his orbs, you quickly justified yourself. “I mean, I’ve never had a boyfriend before. I don’t know how that works.”
Sure, you have seen enough kdramas and read enough books and heck, you have read even many theoretical articles about love and affection, but nothing could be compared to when it actually came into practice.
“Well, I’ve never had a girlfriend either, but should we give it a try?” Sunoo said casually, shrugging his shoulders. No matter how much he tried to play it off coolly, you could see that he was reassured that you felt the same way.
“That’s not a bad idea.”
“Oh, so do we actually agree on something?” He asked playfully, and you smacked him in the shoulder, but he caught your wrist, and turned you towards him. Then, in a matter of seconds, you found yourself in his embrace again, but this time, you didn’t want to let go of him so soon.
What’s more, you wanted to stay there forever.

↳ ❝ [you’d be surprised how much you can have in common with someone completely different from you.] ❞
hello, fellow writers! welcome to my first ever collab, UNLIKELY!ïżŒ!
as I have recently hit a milestone of 500 followers, I have decided to host a collab to interact more with our lovely writers through something fun :) I also owe a big shoutout to @tenderfrailty for creating a collab that I participated in recently! now that I am taking on the host role myself, I just wanted to thank you for being such a good inspiration for how an amazing host should be.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
➱ the theme for this collab is opposites attract! you can be as creative with it as you’d like.
➱ examples of what tropes or ideas you could use to represent this theme would be enemies to lovers, overcoming differences as an established couple, two strangers from different crowds meeting under unforeseen circumstances, and etc.
Tumblr media
➱ there will be absolutely NO SMUT OR NSFW CONTENT ALLOWED. I just would personally prefer for this collab to be smut-free and open to all readers.
➱ FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE. there will be two slots for each member, forming a TOTAL OF 13 SLOTS when excluding the slot I have already reserved for myself. I will continually be updating the availability of each member as soon as I can, but to avoid any additional confusion, I will be messaging each participant a confirmation note of if they secured their desired slot or not.
➱ pairings should only be MEMBER X READER or MEMBER X OC. member x member pairings will NOT be allowed.
➱ all genres (angst, fluff, crack) are accepted as long as you stick to the opposites attract theme.
➱ I will be creating a discord server for all writers to communicate and be directly updated with any news or answers to further questions regarding this project. I will NOT make it required for you to join, but I do highly recommend it. if you choose to join, a link to the server will be messaged to you once I have confirmed that you have followed all the rules and secured your spot in the collab.
➱ the minimum word count is 500 WORDS and it is a MUST to insert the “keep reading” icon after the informational content (pairing, summary, genre, word count, warnings, and whatever else you choose to include) or shortly after the beginning of your story.
➱ as you must read all the rules and guidelines to join, the codeword you will use when filling out your application is “unlikely pairing.”
➱ the due date is MAY 31ST, 2022. the last drop out date is FEBRUARY 28TH, 2022. if there is any reason you cannot submit your story by the deadline, please inform me and we will figure things out from there. (edit: due date will be changed to the end of 2022!!!)
➱ to be accepted, YOU MUST REBLOG THIS POST. I hope it will spread to others that may be interested!

▹ ïč’ âœ© ïč’ â™ĄÂ Â PAIRINGS : ParkSunghoon x reader  ✩ ïč’ â™Ą GENRE : fluff , crack [ ??? ] world count : 850+ .#emeraldenha : unlikely collab📁 : @emeraldenha
♡ summary : a short drabble where sunghoon confesses that he does indeed know how to ice skate.
“ Be careful!.” you call out as you see a few kids slowly make their way across the ice. You smiled at a few parents who were dropping off their children at the rink. Before looking around counting , okay 10. You smiled as you skated towards them , a big smile on your face as you greeted them.
Ice skating had always been your hobby , though many did encourage you to take it to a competitive level , you weren't really interested.
“ Hi, I'm Y/n and I'm your teacher!.” you introduced yourself to the new batch before giving them a few instructions before holding their hands to make sure they won't fall. You had your fair share of kids being way too confident .  After you made them somehow stand without falling over , your eyes finally fell on a guy leaning on the wall. Nothing he was wearing skates , You wonder if he wants to try so you approach him. “ Hi, can I help you?”. You ask as the guy visibly panics before you quickly add “ because I saw you here and I wondered.” you trailed off. As he stood up straight “ oh yeah i wanted to learn ice skating so i came here.” You smile “ oh you could have just told me.!.” . you take his figure , it's not like no one will notice him.
The male grinned and said “ You seemed kinda busy and I thought maybe once it was over.” you laughed “ yeah i'm free , my name is Y/n what's yours?”. You bit your tongue , internally  congratulating yourself for not stammering.
The male grinned as he shook your hand “ Sunghoon , Park Sunghoon.”
You and Sunghoon’s relationship evolved very much from there though there were times where you wondered if he knew ice skating? Or maybe he was a natural? You heard of people like that. Soon you and sunghoon exchanged numbers , classes slowly became hang outs , slowly you developed an interest in the boy. And you were aware of this.
Sunghoon on the other hand had a dilemma. “ So are you saying that you said you don't know ice skating when you are at a professional level?”. Jake exclaimed as he stared shocked at the blond boy who looked down. Sunghoon groaned “ look I didn't mean to but my brain just blanked and I just blurted out whatever came first.” he justified himself as his friends exchanged helpless glances.
Jay sighed “ give the boy a break i'm surprised he actually managed to talk to them itself.” Jake scoffed “ you have to tell her , come on how many dates ?”.
Sunghoon sheepishly scratched his neck “ 5
”. Jake sighed and patted his friends back “ you have to tell her the next time , like .” sunghoon replied “ i feel so embarrassed.” jay shrugged “ you should be.”
You meanwhile were gushing  about him to your friend , she laughed hearing how much you rambled about him. “ y/n do you have any pictures of him?”. She begged you as you blushed, pulling your phone and picked a nice picture of him and showed her. Your friend forze for a minute , closely examining the picture before saying “ i can't believe you got a ice skater as your date.”
Your smile faltered as your friend looked at you cautiously “ you knew he’s a professional skater right
park sunghoon..?”.
She stood up straight “ oh my god dont tell me you didn't know!?”. You fell back on your bed and screamed loudly , the pillow muffling your scream as your friend laughed hysterically. “ how did you not even notice this?”.  You replied “ he said he didn't know
”. Your friend patted your head and said “ I don't even remember the last time I laughed this much.”
You rolled in your bed as you looked back at her “ what do i do now?”. She shrugged and stood up “ that's your problem , bye babe.” and laughed when she heard your scream “ I HATE YOU.”
The next date was awkward because the two of you spent just glancing at each other. While you were mentally reciting your script for asking about his past , sunghoon was mentally finding the words to confess his secret. “ so .” “ so.”
Both of you start at the same time as you blushed , gesturing to him to go first as sunghoon licked his lips , was it always this hot here?. Dipping from his drink , he inhaled before slowly speaking up “ I have something to tell you.” you raised an eyebrow as you replied “ go on.” sunghoon glanced at you and sighed in defeat, “ I know how to ice skate.” you bit back the smile forming on your lips , no wonder he was so fidgety , he was busy thinking of what to say.
Here comes the chaos , he thought to himself as he waited for you to reply. “ I know.” You mumbled out as he froze. His eyes darted to you as he reconfirmed what you said “ you know.” . you softly smiled “ well i didn't know at first but my friend told me and i'm so embarrassed because i saw so many of your videos and i failed to recognise you.”
Sunghoon coughed “ wait so we are okay?”.  You shrugged as you lightly punched him on the shoulder “ why won't we be?”. “ I don't know , I thought you would go feral.”
“ Do you take me for some wild cat?”

you took a deep breath as you skated around the rink with your eyes closed trying to gain some confidence, muttering words of encouragement to yourself, preparing to do it one more time. you ignored everything around you, you forgot mr choi's expectant look and sunghoon's teasing one, you silenced the voices in your head and tried. it was only you.
but you failed again.
"okay, that's enough" mr choi looked disappointed and couldn't even look you in the face but you didn't blame him, you couldn't do it either, the olympics were close and you were already doing everything wrong from day one. you weren't even able to show him your entire routine because you kept making silly mistakes.
you could hear sunghoon's bitter laugh in the distance "i don't even know why you focus so much on her and have so much faith when she can't even do a simple triple axel" you looked him in the eyes wanting to kill him and wishing he would shut his mouth "i don't even know why she's going to the olympics with me, she will never be good enough." his smirk just made you want to punch him in the face.
"sunghoon" the coach called his name with a frown, he was upset and he knew it but still didn't care, he just shrugged his shoulders pretending "stop talking, it's your turn"
tears threatened to come out of your eyes, you just sat waiting for sunghoon to finish so you could try a few more times, you closed your eyes and covered them with your hands, you didn't even want to see how he did everything perfectly, you tried to review in your mind everything you have prepared so far, but your plans are ruined when mr. choi sits next to you.
"you can go home for today" you could feel how the air left your lungs, you wanted to refuse but he kept talking "i know what you're going to tell me but the answer is no, it's clear that this is not your day, you aren't well and you have to rest because if you go there again" his finger pointed the ice rink "and you fall, you could hurt yourself and i'm sure you don't want that" he crossed his arms over his chest, waiting for you to say something but you just stayed silent looking down "look, we still have a lot of time to train, but i want you to be focused for next time, okay? we can't work like this, come tomorrow with a cool head" his cold expression changed to a softer one as soon as he caressed your hair "and don't pay attention to what sunghoon says"
your throat was closed due to the force you exerted to avoid crying preventing you from speaking, you wanted to thank him for everything but you couldn't, although you were sure he knew it.
you focused on the last thing he said to you, you were already used to sunghoon's words but that didn't mean they couldn't hurt you, they cut deep and stayed with you, you focused your gaze on him but it only made you feel worse, you hated the way he could do everything effortlessly, he aced every move, he didn't need to do much because his presence already lit up the whole place.
ever since you can remember sunghoon was like that, he had an innate talent and you were always jealous for that, he was born with a gift and you had to work hard every day to even be able to be at his level, you wanted to curse him for that.
you remembered his words from a few seconds ago, you couldn't even clearly remember why it all started.
but you hated park sunghoon.
and he hated you too.
