Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0: Thrice Upon a Time (dir. Hideaki Anno)
-Jere Pilapil
I can’t describe how satisfying an ending (for now…?) this movie is for Neon Genesis Evangelion. I’ve watched the TV series, watched the movie that revised the ending, read the manga (by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto) and watched the Rebuild of Evangelion series. In some ways, fans have watched these characters live through hell 3, maybe 4, maybe more times. And I think creator/director Hideaki Anno is trying to express something that’s hard to express, each time he returns to the series.
The end of the TV show gets deeply abstract in its last two episodes, mostly featuring the characters talking in circles, analyzing each other. Really, it feels more like Anno is trying to sort out his thoughts for himself, using the characters to bounce his contradictory thoughts and emotions off each other. Compared to the show that preceded it, it’s at least jarring and kind of gives up on the characters in favor of making his point. The animation is deeply limited: often repeated images of the characters speaking with a black background while flashes of text prod the characters, asking questions and offering contradictions. Throughout, we see some shots of an empty theater setting (stage, lights, curtain). Shinji gets a happy ending here, but it feels weird and unearned. I can see why fans were critical of it. (The anime Bakemonogatari made these episodes its entire aesthetic.)
The End of Evangelion gave Anno another opportunity to end the series, and this one makes things much clearer, both in terms of what happened with all the giant robot shit and easing the audience into Anno’s philosophical questioning. The first half picks up where the 24th episode of the series ended and actually writes a reason for Shinji’s perspective to become abstract (to get deep into the details would both be a spoiler and require too much explanation). Here it becomes clear that some of the approach in the series was not, as rumored, a budget issue: Anno tears away the artifice of film with shots of empty and full movie theaters, a live action intrusion on the animated movie. Some parts of it feel like it’s wagging a finger at the audience that rejected the original ending. The ending is more ambiguous, tonally, but more satisfying than that of the TV show.
So Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0: Thrice Upon a Time (it’s 1.1 on Amazon due to minor revisions again between the Japanese and international releases. Art is never over!) ends the series once again. And in some ways, the three preceding movies diverted greatly but wound up in the same place: this is an abstract investigation on what it means to be human and to know humans. It’s about what it means to need a community and to know that proximity leaves you open to pain. But much like an musician revisiting an old song or Walt Whitman republishing Leaves of Grass, time gives the creator new understanding. Hideaki Anno was in his 30s at the time of the TV series and is 61 now. He’s a different person now, it would seem (and I would hope). That extra time gives this revision a gentler, more serene tone than the previous endings.
It’s a wonderful, open-hearted work. All of Neon Genesis Evangelion is, really, wearing its scarred, depressed, anxious emotions on its sleeve at all times. But this one winds up in a place that’s so much more poetic, straightforward without dumbing it down for the audience at all. As much as the mythology (the spears, Lilliths, Adams, Impacts, Instrumentality) can be confusing, emotionally, the series has always told the audience exactly what emotions it’s trying to convey in exact language. It’s just that there’s always been so much that it sometimes doesn’t leave room for much else but a torrent of words and ideas.
But that’s just the end. The rest of the movie is incredible, too. Following up from the end of 3.0, Shinji, Rei and Asuka spend the first hour of the movie living in an idyllic village. The world has near-ended a few times over at this point, so life isn’t easy. But the villagers our protagonists meet are so sweet and optimistic, I almost wish this movie could have been 2.5 hours of these characters living in tranquility. The giant robot fights are the hook, but Neon Genesis Evangelion has always done slice of life, small stakes interpersonal drama so much better. Of course, the giant robot fights accentuate and inform the quiet emotions of the smaller moments.
In the context of this movie, the action is a little more chaotic; in some bad ways a later setpiece it reminds me of The Rise of Skywalker, lacking in gravity (both literally and metaphorically) and feeling “epic” of the sake of “being epic”. But it’s also a love letter to the Evangelions - one last shot at choreographing some fist-pumping, ultra-cool moments for our pilots. And they lead directly into revelations and send-offs for some characters, fitting and beautiful and tragic all at once. It’s not perfect, but I get it.
The end of the movie, though. I’ve been thinking about it all day. It made my hear swell, soundtracked by a perfect Hikaru Utada song. Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0 works as a fitting “goodbye” to a beloved series, sure, but it’s also a tribute to the power of time to mature and clarify. Beautiful.

According to the film's official Twitter, its weekend gross and tickets sales were the highet for a live-action film released in Japan this year so far, surpassing the previous record marked by Godzilla vs. Kong. The 120-minute film earned 696,434,440 yen (6.3 million USD) on 511,145 admissions in its first three days, and is expected to reach the two billion yen mark by the end of its domestic run.

While its theatrical run in Japan is scheduled to end on July 21, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time ranked fifth, one position up from the previous weekend, in its 18th weekend. The film's total box office gross has finally reached 9.997 billion yen (90.29 million USD) on 6.54 million admissions in 126 days since its release in Japan on March 8, 2021. It will be reported in a day or two that the film has passed the 10 billion yen mark.
The first part of the trilogy anime film project Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway ranked ninth in its fifth weekend. Meanwhile, The Seven Deadly Sins: Cursed by Light, the latest and final installment of the anime franchise inspired by Nakaba Suzuki's The Seven Deadly Sins manga series, dropped to tenth from its opening weekend's third.
The Detective Conan anime franchise's 24th feature film Meitantei Conan: Hiiro no Dangan / Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet finally disappeared from the box office top 10 in its 13th weekend. Its total gross in Japan has reached 7.3 billion yen (65 million USD) with 5.24 million ticket sales.

Japan Box Office: BELLE Makes Its Impressive No.1 Debut with 890 Million Yen
Ryu to Sobakasu no Hime / BELLE, Mamoru Hosoda's much-awaited new film was released in 416 theaters across Japan on Friday, July 16, then earned 680 million yen (6.2 million USD) on 459,000 admissions on its first Saturday and Sunday, 890 million yen (8.09 million USD) on 600,000 admissions in its first three days from Friday through Sunday, making its impressive No.1 debut in its first weekend.
The film's first three-day gross was 178 percent of that of Hosoda's previous film Mirai no Mirai / Mirai released in July 2018 and 115 percent of that of his most commercially successful film Bakemono no Ko / The Boy and The Beast in July 2015. If this momentum continues, it may become the highest-grossing film of the director's career, surpassing Bakemono no Ko's record of 5.85 billion yen (53.2 million USD).
On the other hand, the 121-minute film has received mixed reviews, ranking only fourth on Fillmarks' first day satisfaction ranking with an approval rating of 3.71 based on 6,664 reviews. While its visuals and music have been highly praised, many viewers have criticized its incoherent plot and a lack of explanation about the main characters' emotions.
The live-action film adaptation of Ken Wakui's Tokyo Revengers manga was down one position to second in its second weekend. The Takumi Kitamura (Tonkatsu DJ Agetaro)-starring film had earned 1.5 billion yen (13.7 million USD) on 1.1 million admissions, becoming the third top-grossing Japanese film of this year based on a Japanese manga. Meanwhile, the live-action film adaptation of Mayu Murata's popular shoujo manga Honey Lemon Soda had kept its debut weekend's fourth position in its second weekend, bringing its total to 230 million yen (2.1 million USD).
On the last weekend before the end of its theatrical run in Japan, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time ranked sixth, one position down from the previous weekend. The film's total box office gross from its 19-week run has reached 10.15 billion yen (92.68 million USD) on 6.64 million admissions in 133 days since its release in Japan on March 8, 2021. The 155-minute film will start streaming on Amazon Prime Video in Japan from August 13.
The first part of the trilogy anime film project Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway disappeared from the top 10 in its sixth weekend, but its total box office gross has reached 1.85 billion yen (16.89 million USD). Now it has become the third top-grossing anime film of this year, behind Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet (7.34 billion yen) and Gintama THE FINAL (1.87 billion yen).

Japan Box Office: Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet Repeats at No.1 with 774 Million Yen
As expected, the Detective Conan anime franchise's 24th feature film Meitantei Conan: Hiiro no Dangan / Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet stayed at No.1 for two consecutive weeks, making a huge 774 million yen (7.1 million USD) on 549,000 admissions in its second weekend.
The film's second-weekend gross was 54 percent down from the first, but considering the fact many theaters in the four prefectures of Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hyogo have been closed since Sunday due to the third declaration of a state of emergency, this was a pretty good result. The 110-minute film has so far made 3.9 billion yen (35.8 million USD) with 2.74 million ticket sales. Whether or not it will become the biggest hit of the franchise, as was expected beforehand, will depend on the future infection status of the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan.
Coming in second was Rurouni Kenshin: The Final, the first part of the two-part "Final Chapter" live-action film series inspired by Nobuhiro Watsuki's action jidaigeki manga series Rurouni Kenshin. The 138-minute film based on the manga's final "Jinchu" arc earned 528 million yen (4.84 million USD) on 362,000 admissions on its first Saturday and Sunday, and 700 million yen (6.42 million USD) on 510,000 admissions in its first three days. The live-action film series' previous installment Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends, released in September 2014, made 1.3 billion yen (12 million USD) in its first three days and dominated Japan's weekend box office ranking for four consecutive weeks.
Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time dropped to third place in its seventh weekend. The cumulative box office gross of the film has finally surpassed the eight billion yen (73.46 million USD) mark by selling 5.23 million tickets. However, with the rapid spread of the COVID-19 pandemic throughout Japan, it is unlikely to reach the ten billion yen milestone.
BanG Dream! Episode of Roselia I: Yakusoku (Promise), the first part of the all-new two-part film series focusing on Roselia from the BanG Dream! multimedia franchise, was released in 70 theaters across Japan on April 23, then made its impressive fifth-place debut. The second part BanG Dream! Episode of Roselia Ⅱ : Song I am. is set to be released in Japan on June 25, 2021.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train has stayed at the weekend box office top 10 for an amazing 28 consecutive weeks. The film has earned 39.78 billion yen (365 million USD).
