Morty found himself freezing in surprise for a moment when the voice that greeted him wasn't the one he had expected. After the odd events of the morning, he had decided to come and check on his counterpart. First of all to know whether anything weird had happened on the other Citadel too or not, and secondly, even if he wouldn't have admitted it openly, to make sure that the other hadn't been affected.

Yet, when he opened the door of the conference room, he hadn't found himself face to face with his mirror image, but with the last person he would have wanted to discuss the matter with.

Or, at least, that was what he would have thought until a moment before his gaze landed on Meg. Yet, after they did, he couldn't remember a single reason why he could have wished not to run into her.

"As a matter of fact, yes," he spoke, before his mind could catch up with the words. His charming president persona had automatically slipped in place, but there was something off about it. "In all truth, I was looking for you specifically."

A little lie, but spun so fluidly that it sounded like nothing but the honest truth. What was unsettlingly, however, was the intensity with which his amber eyes were locked on her.

"I've been...thinking," he went on, stopping right in front of her, a mere inch too close than it was proper. "All this...animosity isn't doing us any favour. So, perhaps, we should try to find a new ground for our interactions."

Swiftly but oh-so-gently, he caught her hand, lifting it up as he bent over to kiss it. The briefest, lightest touch, like a proper gentleman.

In Rick's mind, it was unclear on what had happened. All he could figure out was that the president experimented with some chemicals. Evident by the array of clear solutions and beakers, along with a few test tubes, on the desk. Something must've gone wrong. Very wrong.

When he found him, Morty had been passed out on the floor. His body convulsing. It took at least a few minutes for him to calm the shaking boy down. Then to carry him off and portal them to the apartment.

There he made sure to lay him gently onto the bed. Tucking him into the blankets and fussing over him just a tiny bit. Stalling a little to tell everyone else what had just happened.

But he knew he had to do it.

Nerves got him as he opened up another portal, leaving the president alone for even just a few minutes didn't set right with him. Though, it would only be a few minutes.

Stepping onto the other side of the portal. He found himself in an identical office as his president's. Instead, that who occupied it, were the counterparts. Well, one counterpart and a Rick that looked exactly like him.

"Sir, s-sorry for the intrusion," Hands were placed behind his back. "But, could you call the First Lady, I-I mean, Meg, over here, th-this is important and I need her here to tell you the unfortunate news."

He didn't want to openly say it right now. Not without his boss's girlfriend here. She deserved to know right when he told the other president.

The question caused the ever-so rare occurrence of a small chuckle, muffled by an even smaller smile. The president's hand brought itself to cover it absent mindedly, limp wrist and relaxed rather than actually hiding it. He couldn't believe the bold question. The audacity to ask him about his love life.

Well, his messed up version of one, at least.

"I can see why you'd be confused and I could give you a simple answer, but it isn't that simple really," If it would have, that'd be too boring for someone like him. He needed the dramatics, the constant chaos around him. It's what he missed in his life. "Because these things just never are,"

Straightening his posture, his face sobered a little. His tone a bit softer and yet firm as he spoke. "Let's start with my counterpart, he's an interesting one, someone who can keep up with me, but what we have --- I.. I'm not quite sure what this mutual understanding between us is, but for now, that's what it is. A mutual understanding,"

He knew how vague the term was. So many implications hidden underneath. Layers of unspoken words entangled within those two words.

"And then there's Meg, she's my girlfriend, I suppose," His tone hardened, more casual -- as if he spoke these words many times before. "She's different and loyal, so I keep her around. And her baking isn't bad either, in fact, she does a lot in terms of feeding the Ricks and Mortys here on the Citadel, I'll have to acknowledge that."

"I figured it was about time that I checked in on my baby brother." Or honorary baby brother at least. At this point, it was difficult keeping track of just who all came from the same dimension and her brother that she had grown up with wasn't even the one that was living with the family now.

It seemed like Morty was out, which wasn't unusual considering how busy and important he had become. "Missing out on some of my parents' current existential crises is simply a bonus." And the Citadel was one of the few places that she was pretty sure that Rick and Morty wouldn't bother going to to make her return, at least not for awhile. Plus, she had never really seen what this place was on her own and what her Grandpa Rick hated about it so much.

"I guess catching up with my future sister-in-law isn't such a bad idea either though since I'm already here." After all, it seemed like Morty was pretty committed to this relationship and it was nice to talk to someone who understood dysfunctional families. "So, no major issues in the Citadel?"

Truth to be told, Morty couldn't have really said why he had bothered to attend that farce. He hardly cared about any holiday, and he didn't considered Valentine's Day one.

Of course, had he been officially asked, he would have answered that he was there to show the importance of the bond the two Citadels shared. No matter the occasion, any party occurring on either city-state was a somewhat official occasion. As president, it was part of his duties to make an appearance, no matter how brief.

However, if he had chosen to be fully honest with himself, in the privacy of his own mind, he would have been forced to admit that it wasn't just duty. He could have easily made up a reasonable excuse to justify his absence and no one would have questioned him.

No, the truth was that he had been curious to see what kind of party Meg had thrown that time, before she slipped away for whatever plans he had with his other self.

And thus how he made his way through the crowd, answering questions with his most charming presidential smile, until he found the host of that sickening ordeal.

"I'm glad that at least you listened to me and added the proper alcoholic options to the buffet," he said in place of a greeting once he had joined the girl. "Good job on not making everything disappointing."

He took a long sip from the glass he was holding. Intrigued or not, he wouldn't have last long dwelling in that sort of unnecessary frivolousness without a proper stiff drink.

For a moment, the president took in a sharp breath through his nose as he thought. He'd seen the two of them around the Citadel. How she easily settled in such a new romantic dynamic with his counterpart. No matter how much those two continued to despise each other, it made him feel..... lesser than.

With a rhythmic tap of four of his fingers, he began to talk. "I can't sit here and say that I approve of it, but I also can't deny them of," He let out a small sigh. "Whatever they have going on. It seems to work for them, who am I to get in the way of that?"

Turning in his chair, he grabbed a container filled to the brim of an amber liquid. Only to pour himself a glass on top of ice. Drinking it down to burn the horrible constriction of his throat.

"If I'm no longer needed in the picture, then so be it, they can have their fun. I have a Citadel to run."

I honestly don't think she's as bad as everyone says she is. Sure she's fucked up. Really fucked up but I can't help but feel bad for her. She's doing everything for a boy who only treats her as a prized pet. She's hopelessly in love with someone who's just using her.

It's sad. After everything megs like us go through it's no wonder she jumped into the arms of the first boy who offered her paradise. I'm sure that if I talked to her I'd be able to make her see the light. Make her see that morty for who he truly is. She deserves better.
