Apocalyptic squirreling
We're not, like, impaling these quotes like the proverbial shrike or anything, just hoarding them away in a nice stash. A collection of Disco Elysium tidbits about the end of the world compiled by @yekokataa and I, feel free to add!
Tumblr media
...starting with the game's earliest teaser trailer.
Tumblr media
(28 rather than 27 could be its own odd math, there's some miscounting in the text now and then just like there's the occasional typo, or it could follow the fact that the year of canon events was changed at some point. for that matter, the infamous 22 years to the nuke should be 21, like it originally followed that same 28 and wasn't edited - consistently, the variable it flags is ice.andre_hyper_rc_succ_28)
Tumblr media
(this is an example of odd math to me, for the record, as it's 365x27 to the day. It could be it's the EXACT count and also that Elysium doesn't have leap years, but I would've expected a less precise number, personally)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
:)
Ours has actual six thousand years of history: it spans from its own version of the early Bronze Age (Perikarnassian period) to the early Middle Ages (Franconigerian period), to the Renaissance (Dolorian period), right up to a decade we call “The Seventies”. It’s a world like ours, one that has evolved culturally and technologically over widely varied periods of time. No Truce With the Furies takes place in the modernity of this world.

Q: How tight is the connection between the book and the game? Is it a Witcher-like situation? KURVITZ: Things in this world are connected to each other like things in our world are connected to each other – not like things are connected to each other in Star Wars. The book and the game share themes and historical developments. The book is set in the early seventies and the game is set in the early fifties. They are connected the way two stories set in our world would be. The fault-lines developing in the fifties are more apparent in the seventies. The situation has worsened, the political climate has shifted, but there is no Skywalker saga. The main story in Elysium is history.

yes yes we've all seen the nuke convo but let's put it here for completionism's sake
Tumblr media
This connection - saying 22 instead of 27, or 28 as the variable reminds us - could seem strange based on game data alone, but it neatly follows the context of the book, which shows us that the bombing of Revachol is one and the same as the material beginning of the end of the world.
Tumblr media
This one is also a fun book throwback, from apocalyptic Kurvitz self-insert to apocalyptic Kurvitz self-insert
Tumblr media
(being appreciative of that kind of future just nets you a YEEEAGH)
Tumblr media
more personally ominous than globally ominous but ominous nonetheless
Tumblr media Tumblr media
("we become vapour" being, of course, the planned title of the eventual Elysium tabletop setting rulebook. sigh.)
Tumblr media
This one's intriguing, isn't it? With an eye to Le Retour...
Tumblr media
Her echoes of the other dialogue options are similarly ominous, for the record.
Tumblr media
And we don't know if Nilsen had visions of his own (the man sounds well-acquainted with his Half Light, on behalf of the war crimes, so it's not... entirely out of the question) but we do know that his pocket calculator lap cat second-bestie very much did and could've been his source.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also a strong book callback, among other things. Remember kids: object permanence!
Tumblr media
Harry, all these quotes like this one sound like they would make sense for the actual guy who goes and blows it all up, not you personal-
Tumblr media
...ah yes. Ambrosius looms... yeah buddy it sure is solemn AND historical, I'm afraid:
Tumblr media
and of course, in closing:
Tumblr media
🥲
...for the remaining 276 pages of Elysium tidbits about the end of the world, of course, over here.

A few things I think a new Dune movies needs to stay relevant.
So a bunch of news has been going around about the screenplay for a new Dune film being finished and while I’m happy that one is on it’s way, (I love the book, and I still love the original film for all it’s flaws, and I think a modern reinterpretation is long overdue.) I’m also concerned that they’ll repeat the mistakes of the past, or not do enough for it to justify it’s existence.
With that in mind, here are a few thought’s in what I’d like to see in a modern adaption.
- Split the book over multiple films.
This one is, I think, pretty obvious to anyone who’s read the book. There’s just too much material in the first book to pack into a single film. Multiple characters and sub-plots would have to be shelved. Critical examination of the world and themes would have to be dumbed down. While I’m sure that the studio would probably like a ‘once and done’ film, with eyes to possible adaptions of the later books, I honestly cannot see an adaption of the first book working over one film, sorry.
- Diversify the cast/consider gender-flipping characters.
If I had my way, I’d due a dune film where the Atreides would all be played by black actors, Harkonnen by Asian actors, and Fremen by indigenous actors, but that’s just my own personal reinterpretation. Either way though, big films with diverse casts like Black Panther, The Last Jedi and Pacific Rim: Uprising are all on the way, and audiences are starting to warm to that kind of cross culture appeal. I think you’d be a fool not to consider it.
Regarding gender flipping, while Dune always has had a fairly strong cast of women, some of those depictions still have a lot of regressive baggage from back in the day, which audiences often call bullshit on. With that in mind, there are many characters that could easily swap genders and still work. In the age of Furiosa a Dune film with a female Paul Atreides would draw a lot of attention I think.
And it goes without saying that it’s only a matter of time before we see a Sci-fi blockbuster pull the trigger on a same sex relationship, worth considering the accolades for being the one to pull it.
- Go wild with the designs, don’t look to the past.
While there have various interpretations of the Dune universe over the years, it would be easy to hark back to the designs of the Lynch film, or the golden age of sci-fi artwork. I’d say it would be best to resist that urge, and instead attempt to create a film that looks like nothing people have ever seen before. You probably won’t fully pull it off, but Dune really deserves a world that looks wild and psychedelic. I don’t see nostalgia pulling that off.
- Don’t be afraid to change things.
It’s instinctive to try and stay true to the text, but some times an adaption can get on to a more interesting idea by deviating from the source. Give Fayd a redemption arc. Give the Mentats a more contemporary reinterpretation. Give Irulan actually something to do. Look at the text as a canvas to weave a world from.
- Give us an amazing soundrack.
Not particularly complex, modern blockbuster soundtracks have been really lacking of late, (the last great one was Tron: Legacy, in my opinion) and I still really love the music from Lynch’s Dune, so I just couldn’t imagine a Dune film without some iconic music. Find a unique and bold artist, someone fresh with an interesting vision.
Might I recommend Make up and Vanity Set?
And that’s about all I have for now. I imagine I’ll probably rant more on my thoughts as more information comes along.
For now, just remember to walk without rhythm.
