Seduced by the trumpet when he heard Louis Armstrong’s music during his childhood, Muneeb Hermans was determined to take up the instrument. This desire prompted him to join a minstrel troupe in his Cape Town neighbourhood, Hanover Park. However, it was only during his years at Alexander Sinton High School that he found an official trumpet teacher, finally learned to read music and acquired technical skills. In high school he also learned about and fell in love with other notable jazz greats such as Chet Baker and Miles Davis. “It all started with Louis Armstrong. I fell in love with the sounds,” Muneeb says. “Then there was Miles Davis. He captures my heart, rather than my ear.” Now in his early 20’s, he has already graced renowned international stages such as Carnegie Hall in New York and has also played as far afield as Beijing, London, Paris and the Seychelles. Local audiences can look forward to seeing Muneeb at the i-Studios Lapa in Joostenbergvlakte on Sunday 10 June 2018 at 4 pm. During the show, he will debut some original music and also use the opportunity to pay tribute to some of his favorite South African musicians, including Winston Mankunku, Bheki Mseleku, Feya Faku, Marcus Wyatt, Mark Fransman and others. He will be backed by Bradley Prince on guitar, Sean Sanby on double bass and Kurt Bowers on drums.
