Field journal 📔
ID: Hypericum fasciculatum
Common name: Peelbark St. John’s wort, sandweed
🌼
You may have heard of St. John’s wort as a supplement, but that does not come from any of our Florida native species of St. John’s wort. This particular species does contain the hypericin compound that is supposed to be healing in the right dose, but can cause dermatitis or photosensitization if not taken correctly.
🌼
I always wondered why so many plants have “wort” in their name, and the answer is pretty simple: in Old English “wyrt” meant “plant.” At some point, the spelling changed to “wort” and was used commonly until the mid 1600s. So if you have a plant with “wort” in its name, it was probably first described and named more than 300 years ago.
🌼
The Old English “wyrt” actually came from the Germanic word “wurtiz.” In addition to giving us “wyrt,” the word “wurtiz” also evolved into “Wurzel,” which is the modern German word for “root.”
🌼
Shoutout to @geraldsavesflorida whose posts often dig into the language history of species names, which inspires me to do the same in my own research!

Field journal 📔 ID: Curculionidae family (possibly Cleopomiarus hispidulus or Cleopomiarus sp.) Common name: weevil (possibly a lobelia weevil) 🪲 There are a lot of beetles on this planet - 1/4 of all known animals are beetles. If you look way back in natural history, beetles have been around since the dinosaurs, so they’ve had a lot of time to branch off into a ton of different types. 🪲 The weevil is just one of the MANY families of beetles, and it’s been poking around with its cute little snout (called a rostrum) since the Cretaceous period. 🪲 Nowadays, we have 83,000 known species of weevil, so it’s easy to see why I’m not totally sure about the species pictured! 🪲 Just like opossums, weevils are known to play dead, lying motionless on their backs when they are disturbed. And just like opossums, weevils don’t get a lot of love from most people, but they’re one of the critters that makes me squeal in delight! 🪲 📍Volusia County, Florida 🔍

“Are there any benefits to mosquitoes?” I get this question occasionally, and the answer is YES! But first, a fun fact: Only the female mosquitoes bite. So there’s a pretty big segment of the mosquito population that isn’t trying to suck your blood!
🦟
Although many of them do bite and spread disease (I’m a dengue hemorrhagic fever survivor, so me and my decade’s worth of health complications have every reason to be wary of them), these tiny pests play a crucial role in our ecosystems:
🦟
1️⃣Believe it or not, some mosquito species are pollinators! As they go about their buzzing business, they assist in the reproduction of various plants. That may be what the mosquitoes in these 2 photos are doing!
🦟
2️⃣Mosquito larvae are a vital part of the food chain, serving as a nutritious meal for aquatic species like fish and frogs as well as airborne critters like birds, bats, and dragonflies.
🦟
3️⃣Since mosquitoes are sensitive to water conditions, monitoring their populations could provide insights into the health of aquatic ecosystems.

Field journal 📔
ID: Ipomoea sp. (I thiiink it’s cordatotriloba)
Common name: cotton morning glory, tievine
💜
This is just one of many different types of morning glory. Most morning glories open their blooms fully in the morning and then fade throughout the day. I observed this one at about 9am, so I’m not sure what it would look like later in the day!
💜
I think the bug in the second picture is a Cycloneda sp. / spotless lady beetle, but I didn’t get a better look at it.

Field journal 📔
ID: Lobelia sp. (I’m pretty sure it’s Lobelia glandulosa)
Common name: Lobelia (glade lobelia, to be specific, if I got the species correct)
💜
There are 415 species of Lobelia, and according to the Atlas of Florida Plants, we have 15 of them here in Florida.
💜
I first learned about lobelias after spotting one in Ohio, so it was exciting once I started to notice them here in Florida.
💜
I didn’t unearth anything else jaw dropping about this plant, but take special note of the bug perched on this lobelia, because I’ll be making a separate field journal entry for this species soon! Anybody know what type of bug it is? I forgot that members of this superfamily can be so tiny, so this was an adorable reminder!

Field journal 📔
ID: Drosera spp.
Common name: sundew
🌸
These carnivorous plants are so cool! What you see in these photos are the leaves. It looks like they have dewdrops on them, but those are actually a sticky substance produced by the plant to catch bugs.
🌸
Once a bug is caught, the leaf will roll up, killing the insect quickly, but sometimes spending weeks digesting the insect.
🌸
Carnivorous plants often grow in soils that are low in nutrients. They consume insects, which provide nutrition that the plants can’t get from the poor soil quality.
🌸
We have 5 native species of sundew in Florida. I think this one is either D. capillaris or D. brevifolia.
