Really p****ng down this morning, so a wet ride on the @bromptonistanbul British racing green machine. Especially important to dry the Brompton with an old, absorbent towel, including up into the seat-post tube, then using a different cloth that is lightly sprayed with WD40, wipe the Brompton down over the frame, handlebars, rear triangle, and folding pivots. Do NOT get any WD40 on the seat post, wheel rims or brakes. Lightly spray the cranks, chain, tensioner and rear hub to push off any excess water, and re-lubricate the transmission. Check the brake cables for moisture before folding, so that you don’t allow water to slide into them when folded and corrode them, damaging your brakes and levers. Wipe the grit and mud off the shell rims and spokes with another damp cloth - don’t use this cloth on the frame as you can scratch the paintwork with grit on the cloth. Once that’s done, you can safely fold and store the Brompton somewhere dry. Storm clouds over Kadıköy and the Prince’s Islands this morning as I went for a Brompton bicycle ride. Came back from London with a dreadful cold all week, which stopped me getting out on the bike until today, then did 16.2km (10.07m). Early, early morning Brompton @bromptonbicycle ride; 15.4km (9.57m) with one stop (after 1.5km) when my seat post slipped. Must have used an oily rag to clean the rain off the @bromptonistanbul last week. My Nikon FG-20, with a black body and Nikon Series E prime lens 50mm, 1:1.8. It has TTL centre-weighted metering, with the light metre visible through the viewfinder on the left. A hint of automatic operation (A setting aperture priority) this camera can be used completely manually and also mechanically (M90 setting) if the small batteries fail. This camera gets contemptuous treatment from most ‘professionals’ and camera buffs, but a small group of photographers love its lightweight, simply functional design (especially the black body model), as it uses any Nikon F mount lens (Ai or Ai-S). I have had mine for many years, since 1991 and it is still a fantastic camera. I sometimes wish for a Nikkor 24mm 1:2.8 wide angle lens, but the Series E 50mm 1:1.8 lens has superb optics, optical coatings to reduce flare and is compact with 52mm filter threads. I use Hoya UV(C) and a Polaroid Polarizer filters, the Hoya staying on most of the time for protection of the lens. This is one of the best Nikon cameras ever made, particularly for entry-level photography but I wouldn’t change mine for another, ‘professional’ model.
