National Crochet Month
I am so behind on the fact that it is national crochet month! So here's a speed run of the first few days. And if you'd like me to expand some more on anything, my ask box is a open!
1. Meet the Maker -*waves* Gavii. Mostly crochet doilies but multistitchin with a current focus on blankets. 3 dogs. FFXIV. Thunderbirds.
2. WIP -I have four: a pair of socks, my long term temp blanket for the year, my FFXIV inspired blanket, and a quick market bag that just needs some straps added
3. Favorite Stitch - I'm rather partial to the HDC for its versatility with three loops
4. Something I'd like to try - Next on my to learn list is knit cables. I'd love to make a cabled hat. For crochet, I'm interested in trying mosaic or tapestry.
5. Being Silly - ? No, thank you?
6. Full of color - Hedgehog Fibres -
Tumblr media
7. Stash - I don't want to talk about it. Here's some Happy Place instead
Tumblr media
8. Crochet controversy - magic circle or chain start - like most things, it depends. I'll do magic circle to start doilies, especially if it's asking for sc. But for larger yarn weights and things like grannies, I prefer chain start because it feels more secure.
9. How I learned - I started on granny squares and my mom taught me - the rest I learned from reading patterns, trial and error, and watching youtube
10. Throwback Thursday This was a wedding gift I made a few years back
Tumblr media
11. Texture - yes. I am a big fan of front post stitches, and like in the above, I adore when mandalas or doilies are designed with complexity.

Fic: Chocolate and Hazel 2:
surviving is putting one foot in front of the other sometimes
A/N: People are complicated, and so too are OCs with heavy backstories continuing to flirt with main fandom characters. Here’s a new drop of Chocolate and Hazel. This takes place after the events in TSOF but before Christmas.
How about we learn some more about Everett, huh?
Characters: Virgil Tracy, OC: Everett Sanders
Genre: romance, drama
Warnings: history of drug use, recovering from addiction
Universe: Adventures of Chicken Dad
I am going to date myself with the use of this phrase, but this is a slash story. M/M with nothing explicit, just fellas navigating romance.
He shouldn’t be thinking of his employer’s brother while eating chocolate.
Except Gordon’s brother has eyes as dark as the coffee the man likes so much, yet with the tender sweetness of cocoa, and Everett can’t help but make the connection.  Not when he hasn’t seen Virgil’s face in a few days now between rescues and time zones and the farm’s own busy schedule. Everett bites off another piece between his teeth, and it’s a decadent bar of dark chocolate with salted caramel undertones, so he’s learned to savor it.  Still frozen from being hidden in the back of the freezer away from Jules’ grabby-hands which often invade the pantry, it also reminds him of Virgil’s cold fingers twined with his own. And as it melts on his tongue, it tightens the same happy grip on his heart, so very like Virgil’s hands warming up between his not so long ago.
And yet it feels like eons ago.
Their - friendship? courtship? – whatever they are, it is all so new still.  The memory of Virgil’s hands on his hips as they danced in the moonlight to only the hum of Virgil’s baritone and the chattering of crickets. The spark on his lips in moments stolen in just the last few days before Virgil returned to active duty. And before then, all the moments they spent together just working, laughing, talking machines, and yet not about that at all.
He held onto it all in between their brief messages back-and-forth. Sometimes if he was lucky, it would be a holo-call which he adored for the chance to see that sleepy, giddy smile on Virgil’s face, though the blue hue did no favors for warm brown of his eyes.
Read on Ao3 here
Still nervous about romance and I’ve gone and done the Gavii thing of making things super complicated, so also thanks to @the-original-sineater and @gumnut-logic for the support and read through and being supportive friends. All failures are mine though, still figuring this whole thing out. :/

Chapter 1 Notes: On Sea Shanties
Disclaimer: I am creating a tag for research notes, “Appendices” so to speak because I find it fun. Please don’t take me for an authority on anything. I truly do not know what I am doing. I just like information and notes and things, so just come down the rabbit hole with me - I have shanties.
A quick note on sea song vs. sea shanty Modern usage, they are one and the same. The word shanty, however, comes from the word chant or chanties (as I use in the story), which accompanied the work of the day, whereas a sea song may be more any song that falls into the genre of maritime tunes.
Drunken Sailor
Sea Songs also took many forms and evolved over time, which makes what we are left with today incredibly fun! This poor sailor has had to deal with quite a number of unfortunate situations. From belly shaved with a rusty razor, thrown in the brig till sober, given a taste of the bosun’s rope end (Gordon would never), given a hair of the dog that bit him. Poor dude.
Easily one of the most recognizable sea shanties today (well....maybe before Wellerman suddenly became a thing. When did that happen????), Drunken Sailor is a great example of the nuances. It could be Weigh, Hey, and up she rises, which I tend to hear most today, but I’ve used “Heave, Ho, and up she rises” for the story because it helps represent just how the sea songs evolved from the chanties  - a solid heave ho drawn into a tune as they sailors check rigging for the day.
Some Favorite Examples of Drunken Sailor:
The Irish Rovers - Spotify | Youtube
Blaggards - Spotify | Youtube
Assassin’s Creed 4 - Spotify | Youtube
Santiano/Santianna/Santy Anna/ Santiana
This shanty may actually be dated later than our story, as it as least from the 1850s, speaking to the Mexican-American War, but that’s not to say there weren’t other versions that existed pre-dating what we know. The French version is from 1961, recorded by Hugues Aufray, and it speaks of a ship traveling from Saint-Malo to San Francisco. So in this case, we have different stories completely. I’ve used the fluid nature of shanties to my advantage, inspired just how lovely the French version is. (Also I don’t know French but LOVE listening to other languages). It screamed our boy John.
The lyric John sang is just the first line from the song, as it has very few references to historical things that you know... are glaringly not 1770s. So my head canon to my own AU head canon is that the Tbird was docked in New Orleans at the same time as a French ship named Santiano. Beautiful. *chef’s kiss*
C'est un fameux trois-mâts, fin comme un oiseau - Hissez haut! Santiano! Translated: It is a fine three-master thin like a bird. Heave-ho, Santiano! https://lyricstranslate.com/en/santiano-santiano.html

Note
For the Fanfic Writer asks, could I please request D, R and Y please?
Answering out of order... apologies for the novels and thanks for the asks!
Y: What are your thoughts on your personal satisfaction with something you’ve written vs. the popularity of your stories? Do you tend to be most satisfied with your most popular stories?
Honestly, my greatest fear is – well my greatest fear is that I am just rehashing the work of my friends and am not very good at all. But my second greatest fear is that I peaked at the first Scenes, and everything else is just eh in comparison.
So… I am not sure really how to answer this question – I’m still building engagement. I went down the niche AU rabbit hole. I’m still so new to the fandom. So this is difficult for me to answer.
I’m never exactly personally satisfied (see greatest fear above) so I tend to have things I like about all my stories and things I don’t like. And when it comes to what people read, I think it depends – who is on at the time, who actually follows Gavii, or gets the rec from somewhere else. FF engagement is non-existent, and Ao3 I think I’m slowly building. Not everyone likes angst, and sometimes people who follow my stories may not actually be in the mood for my level of ouchies. And that’s 100% okay because we are all human and have lives and preferences.
So in every way – popularity depends on how you define it. And if you define it as engagement, this also depends on many uncontrollable factors. I am aware of them, and the trick is to make sure my brain doesn’t take lack of engagement for personal value of myself or the work (which it tries to do. HI APRIL BREAK)
Eh so I don’t know. My most popular stories if you go by stats is “Coffee And…” which was a collab, so I don’t take credit for that success. My chapter is probably actually the weakest. And next after that is Scenes (see fear two above).
So I guess my answer is – despite the lack of eloquence above, I’m trying to reconcile this one? But I appreciate any engagement I get.
R: Which writers (fanfic or otherwise) do you consider the biggest influence on you and your writing?
My fandom friends – ya’ll know who you are.
I don’t read much anymore, so I can’t say there’s an author than heavily influences my current writing self. But I love talking through ideas and sending snippets to my friends for feedback. Sometimes it’s just a listening ear, and sometimes it’s a solid - hey Gavii, I have a question about this because it doesn’t make sense. Or just, yes, this is good, go post it and stop stressing.
Or the wonderful, l love this idea and you should write it but don’t put pressure on yourself.
Hopefully I give back as much as I get. I try to.
D: What’s the most personal fanfic you’ve written?
Ooph. They’re all personal.
I think… Revealing Enki was a big move for me- so the vox delphini stuff. A man talking telepathically to dolphins? As a concept? That could easily feel a bit hokey, so I really wanted it to feel organic and natural, and it was so so important to me it came out right. And that was one of the first you all probably got to see my John come out. The big theme with that one was connectivity.
I shared before that that entire concept came from a novel that was one of biggest influences growing up. And maybe that’s partially also the answer to the other question above. Madeleine L’Engle’s A Ring of Endless Lightis about a young female writer – a poet – who has this empathetic connection to dolphins, and she befriends a young marine biologist studying them. There’s also a bunch of heavy themes in the book including death and loss, so it’s not a light read.
Enki is of course my own, and the boy’s communications with the dolphins come out a bit different than the ones in her novel.
This is one of the books I will always keep with me. Literally, it’s on my bedside table. It means a lot to me, and for that reason I feel like as the world goes away was a big emotional move to write.

Salve! (Hello!) - Pinned Post
Wow!  Hi - it’s so nice to meet you! I’m Gavii. Gav + sound of letter e. Slant rhyme with tabby. Vaguely Latin, but actually gibberish.
Here there will be Thunderbirds primarily, and some crochet, sci fi, music, nautical stuff,  and fanfiction.  I do not have a writing schedule, as I work a full time job, and I write as inspiration strikes.
If you want to learn more about me, my writing process, or head-canons, I created a bio page and my ask is always open. Ask me things, about anything, anytime! I am happy to interact.
Before we get to the fanfic stuff:
Music:  #FanficMusicInspo #gaviiplaylist
Recommendations:  #art rec #fanfic rec
Crafts: #gavii makes stuff  - I also have a separate crafting blog here.
(My SOS boy is Gordon, Virgil, or John - it cycles)
FishTank makes the world go round.
Thunderbirds Fanfic Stuff -
(blanket punch to the gut warning for most fics. I like to write angst)
Tumblr Writing Tag: #Gavii Scribit
Author Pages: Ao3  | FF
 Thunderbirds main AU series
The one with the ships: here
The one with the dolphins: here
The one with the chickens: here
Not sure where to start? Here is my collection of minis on Ao3 <3
Interacting with my work:
Can I make artwork of your fic? Go for it! I'd be thrilled you were inspired to make it come to life. Prepare yourself for an excited key smash babble though.
What about one of your AUs? Can I write something for or based on your Universe? Please ask. This one is trickier because these AUs are all technically open and active. If you have a missing scene idea or a character study or something that's not forward plot affecting- hell yeah! I'd be honored for the interest and its also important to me that the series feel cohesive, so this is one I am open to talking about.
Inspired by and adjacent ideas, I am open to with appropriate credit, as long as they are different enough to the original.
I like your x headcanon, can I use it?
Particularly Thunderbirds, fanfiction is such a collaborative place anyway - and I know there are some things that just fall back into fanon and we've absorbed it wholly. It's probably not completely mine.
Can I podfic? Sure, go for it. I'll probably cry though. 💚💛
I love how you phrased x, can I use it? Please ask and let me know how much you want to use, but generally yes with appropriate credit to the fic the wording is from.
