Gruul and Unusual Punishment Answer
Here is the solution for last week’s puzzle, Gruul and Unusual Punishment. If you missed it, you can find it here.
The highest amount of damage Borborygmos can deal to Trostani this turn is 53 damage. Seems like quite a bit considering Trostani is only at 16 life, huh? The trick to solving this puzzle is not just figuring out how to deal a lot of damage at once, but when to deal it.
Here’s how it’s done:
We have a total of 22 mana to use for this puzzle (thanks to Zhur-Taa Ancient’s ability) so we’ll start off by using 3 of it to cast Char, targeting Ghosts of the Innocent. Because of Ghosts of the Innocent’s ability, Char is going to deal half its damage rounded down, so it will deal 2 to the ghosts and 1 to Borborygmos. (19 mana remaining.)
We’ll use 1 of our mana to activate Skarrgan Skybreaker’s ability, sacrificing and dealing 6 damage to the Ghosts of the Innocent. Rounding it down, the Ghosts will take 3 damage, and will finally die. (18 mana remaining)
Next, let’s cast Clan Defiance and have the X be 3. We’ll choose to deal 3 damage to Blazing Archon, Trostani, and our own Boros Reckoner. Boros Reckoner dies, but its ability triggers, and we’ll have it deal 3 more damage to the Blazing Archon, killing it. (Trostani: 14 life. 13 Mana remaining.)
Now, its’ time for combat. And, like a good Gruul mage, we’re going to attack with everybody!
After attacking, pay 3 mana to activate Mortipede’s ability so it must be blocked by everything if able. Then, for a total of 8 mana, we’ll activate the bloodrush abilities of Wrecking Ogre, Wasteland Viper and Ghor-Clan Rampager, all of which will be targeting the Mortipede. The Mortipede becomes a 16/14 with double strike, deathtouch, trample, and must be blocked by everything if able! (2 Mana Remaining.)
Move to declare blockers. Mortipede must be blocked by Emmara Tandris, Autochthon Wurm, and Armored Wolf-Rider. The rest of your creatures will remain unblocked. Move to the first strike damage step.
Now, because of how trample damage works, we can trample over excess damage to the player after assigning at least lethal to each blocker. And thanks to deathtouch, we only need to deal 1 damage to each creature to be lethal! Have Mortipede assign 1 damage to each of its blockers, and trample over 13 damage. All of her creatures are now dead. (Trostani: 1 Life.)
Now, the final step before dealing lethal, lets pay 1 to activate Glint-Eye Nephilim’s ability, discarding Explosive Impact. The Nephilim gets +1/+1. Now let’s end it by moving to the next damage step!
Have your creatures deal a total of 37 damage to Trostani for lethal! (Mortipede 16 + Zhur-Taa Ancient 7 + Rubblehulk 11 + Nephilim 3 = 37)
Trostani is now defeated, and she took a whopping total of 53 damage! Borborygmos will be very grateful with your help, so no skull bashing today!
I’ll reward 45 Thopters to those who solved this puzzle.
