Someone decided they weren’t interested in being potamodromous. This wild stream born oncorhynchus mykiss was in a tributary that has never been stocked with them. The Great Lakes steelhead may not touch salt water but they are pretty amazing fish and a heck of a fight. While fishing for browns yesterday this one took my streamer and ran like hell. After one of the highest jumps I have seen a fish do it ran back at me where I almost meeting my net. All of the sudden I felt the tension break free and watched it swim away. The excited was too much for me to really be upset about losing the fish and I called @gypsywifelife to tell her what I had seen. While the phone was ringing I casted back with little intent but immediately felt my line go tight again. Faster then I could process I dropped my phone into my waders and started the battle. This time the first ran into some logs which I luckily navigated quickly to avoid breaking it off. A few small jumps and runs later I had it in the net. After walking through the snow to a section of river with my family that typically is less pressured I made my way up to the spot I wanted to fish. When I pushed through the brush I saw a man with a spin rod walking up to exactly where I wanted to fish. I gave him a nod with some discouragement and turned back down stream. He was floating a trout bead with spawn through the riffle and hooked up with a fish. I watched with some envy and thought about how much damage has been done to this river in the time I have lived in Michigan. One of the most unproductive steelhead waters in the state but people do catch fish each year. I saw he was having a hard time landing the fish so I put my rod down and made my way up to see if I could be of help. His line was caught on some vegetation and the small buck began to gator roll wrapping line around its face. I ask the stranger for his net and waded out to get the fish. When I walked up it escaped and swam right towards me. Still hooked I scooped him up and helped man successfully land his fish. We snapped some quick photos and he seemed a little awkward about letting it go as if we would judge him for not tossing it on the bank to take home. When the fish swam away we watched it’s graceful retreat to a place it could hold and revive. I shook the strangers hand, texted him this photo and went back to the car. Even though I was skunked swinging flies I felt pretty good seeing some life in the river and helping this man who loves fishing as much as I do just in a different form land one. My time will come and I have a lot to learn about swinging flies for Steelhead but a situation like this make it worth every minute to me. #greatlakessteelhead (at Michigan)
