As temperatures trend downwards and the mercury drops towards freezing, nothing beats a long, hot shower or bath to leave one feeling clean, warm, pampered and toasty all over. But, wait, hold the sweetly scented, elaborately bottled bubble bath, as many conventional bath and body products come wrapped in excessive packaging, while containing a slew of questionable ingredients that can be harmful to people and the planet. Alternatively, the vendors selling bath and body products at our farmers markets work to make their creations as “clean” and eco-friendly as possible when it comes to the packaging and the contents themselves. So, the next time you’re looking to indulge in new toiletries either for yourself or as a gift, here are some things to consider: Bar Soap Long before liquid soap, shower gel and body wash burst onto the bathroom scene, there was good old fashioned bar soap sitting unassumingly on the side of the sink in a soap dish. But somewhere along the way, simple bar soap became loaded with synthetic cleaners and fragrances. The range of bar soaps you’ll find on display at vendor stalls in our farmers markets is formulated using as many locally sourced, eco-friendly and direct-from-the-farm ingredients as possible. This bar soap is intended to lather, moisturize and clean just as well as its synthetic counterparts. What’s more, vendors seek full transparency and traceability in their ingredient lists, which will typically contain recognizable household names such as essential oil, clay, beeswax and botanicals. You can find an array of different bar soaps across vendors that come in all sorts of formulas, colors, shapes, themes and fragrances. And, unlike liquid soaps and cleansers which require packaging in bottles or tubes that enter the waste stream once empty, the bar soap sold in our markets will have minimal to zero packaging. So, if you’re aiming for a truly “green clean” next time you lather up, pick up a bar and not a bottle. Shampoo Bars If you haven’t given “solid” shampoo a whirl before, it’s worth a try if you’re looking to reduce waste and minimize your exposure to harsh chemicals when washing your hair. Liquid shampoo is sold in plastic bottles to prevent breakage in the shower stall or tub and, as a liquid, is heavy to transport which produces greater carbon emissions. On the other hand, the shampoo bars sold by farmers market vendors tend to have little to no packaging and contain mostly natural oils, butters and conditioners that produce a rich lather to clean hair without stripping it of its natural oils. Another advantage of solid shampoo is that its ingredients are concentrated, so one bar should last you longer than a bottle while taking up less space in the bathroom. Shampoo bars are also travel-friendly as they’re lightweight, easy-to-pack and don’t set off any alarm bells with TSA. Exfoliators Despite legislation prohibiting their manufacture and distribution, some cosmetics and exfoliating cleansers have been found to still contain plastic microbeads. These microplastics are so miniscule that they often evade water treatment plant filtration systems and end up polluting waterways and oceans. They can even be present in our drinking water and are ingested by fish and other marine life. The soaps, scrubs and cleansers sold in our farmers markets do not contain plastics, but instead incorporate a variety of naturally abrasive, biodegradable materials to act as exfoliating agents. Look for products being sold by vendors that contain ingredients such coffee grounds, matcha, oatmeal and sea salt that will loosen and remove dead skin cells to smooth, revitalize and restore your complexion without harming the environment. Lotions, creams and balms As the weather gets colder and humidity levels drop, one’s skin can get dry, irritated and flaky. Plus, all those warm showers and baths can further remove moisture and dehydrate skin. Because they’re applied directly to your epidermis, which is the largest organ in the human body, it’s important to carefully consider the types of ingredients present in your skincare regime. The skincare products you’ll find at the farmers market contain naturally derived components such as beeswax, shea and cocoa butters, essential oils and other plant extracts. These ingredients will soothe, protect, restore and moisturize skin as effectively as any chemicals produced in a laboratory. So, the farmers market is not only a destination where you can source nutritious, locally grown and sustainably produced foods, it’s also a place to find cleaner, greener bath and body products. After all, they do say that what goes on you is as important as what goes in you!
