finished autumn in hieron a couple weeks ago (i think i forgot to say on here!! it was good!!) and since i started with counterweight bc i started listening to friends at the table last year on a long road trip where autumn’s audio quality wasn’t good enough to hear properly but i also generally like the idea of listening in release order i started listening to marielda now (also really good!!!)

and since april i’ve been regularly meeting with friends to play beam saber which has been really cool, its the longest i’ve ever consistently kept up with a ttrpg campaign, i love seeing my friends and becoming really invested in a story i’ve created with them :)

but yeah because of that even though i don’t really consider myself knowledgeable about rpg stuff, i just know Of a lot of stuff through osmosis from my gf, i actually am starting to get a firmer grasp on forged in the dark mechanics

so listening to the second part of marielda rn is really cool bc they’ll just say things about the mechanics and ill be like !! i know that!! (also funny though bc i can even tell when they get some mechanics wrong lol. like austin telling people ‘i’m doing [x] so resist with [y] type of roll’ lol)

half correct! sangfielle is indeed a season of Friends At The Table; it is, approximately, their dark fantasy / gothic horror season, and one of their recommended points for starting to listen to the show if you're new to it! it's been a while since i last listened, so i can't get as specific about this as i'd like, but big thematic stuff about selfhood and bodies and who/what a location belongs to. also contains: curses, capybara people, insect infestation of a wax body, goat woman who is a train knight! ("what's a train knight, sparrow?" listen to find out! fucking banger, is what it is. trains are haunted and alive in this world.)

secret samol, however, is a fan-run gift exchange that happens every year around northern hemisphere winter! fatt fans make fic, art, music, and more for each other, and the reason you've been seeing a bunch of it is because i follow the secret samol event organizing blog :p i didn't participate this year for various reasons but i did last year -- i wrote twilight mirage fic, though i'm pretty confident you don't have all the context you'd need to read it yet. "samol" is the name of a god from fatt's Seasons of Hieron series -- i don't know much more than that, on account of not having listened to those yet.

Last Monday of the Week 2023-10-30

...Daylight Savings Time

Listening: Finished Winter in Hieron, the ???th season of Friends at the Table. I don't know what Marielda counts as.

Lots of good strong character work here! Godkilling is somewhat overplayed in TTRPG's at this point so it's impressive that they manage to pull off multiple godkilling storylines that are actually good to listen to.

Reading: Bleh. Catching up on some blogs which mostly just makes me want to get my RSS reader back in order. I haven't used it in a while.

Watching: Double feature.

The Matrix Resurrections, the new one. A movie that handily parries basically every criticism you could level at it. I feel like it's the best it could have been, and fortunately it's very clear that it likes its characters, which goes a long way.

It's clever! It knows what it's about. It has to work with being an unneeded sequel which is heavily lampshaded and it makes it work. Very very meta without being too far up its own ass. Manages to swing a pretty decent villain in the Architect.

Also, Little Shop Of Horrors, which I have not actually seen before. I love a good musical, in general I consider it a good sign if I get at least one song stuck in my head, which is a metric well met here. The Director's cut, which definitely follows through on the theme better than what I hear about the theatrical cut.

Playing: Briefly dipped into Warframe on the weekend to see what's going on and discovered that there is yet another open world and yet another game mode that I had not unlocked. Still behind on story quests because I haven't unlocked the necramechs so I can't do the New War yet. I'll get there I just need to fuck around on the zombie planet harvesting minerals for a while.

Making: Some misc. printing of things around the house. Research on adhesives that will work well for picture hanging, because I have solid concrete walls. It looks like Ikea rebadges either Tesa Bond and Release or 3M Command Strips for use with their wall hanging stuff and they sell it cheap, which is nice. I'll probably print my own hooks for some things.

Tools and Equipment: I got one of those cheap electric hot water bottles, they're fully self contained with an element, sensing circuitry, and some kind of lightly modified water.

While my apartment is still perfectly warm, it's nice to be able to blast a part of yourself with heat sometimes. They're a lot more convenient than pouring boiling hot water into a rubber bottle, at the cost of being somewhat disposable. My mother runs hers like, 8 hours a day all winter and it lasts a couple years so it's not that bad.

As someone who has fallen Hard for the friends at the table charm, tropes, pcs, and GM, I really feel that telling people to start at C/w is just not doing the series justice at this point.

It’s really grown on me (I’m at ep 36!) but it takes a good moment to hit its stride. The concept and characters are fun but it takes a while for them to really vibe with each other imo.

“WOW… really?“ Butch asks with wonder in his eyes. What the heck was a blog? More importantly… “What the heck’s an ‘Exoplanet’?” He asks next, chin resting in his palm as his elbow leans against the countertop. “I’ve only ever heard of th’ main ones…” And perhaps seen a few of them in the sky when they were visible at some point.

The cowboy listens as Hieron describes space travel to be similar to that of sea travel, with the vastness of essentially nothing. He hums thoughtfully at their description, imagining the sight in his mind. If it was anything like looking up at the night sky, it must have been gorgeous.

“I ain’t ever seen a star up close—that’d be neat!” Butch exclaims, perking up with a curious smile. He loved traveling but especially into the unknown; discovering new things excited him.

“A cruise through space…” He says wistfully; it sounded unreal. All of that had been so unreachable in his time, to know the people in this century casually visited space was mind boggling. “When can we do it??? I wanna step on some planets! Are there any that haven’t been visited yet?”

Cette section de mon blog concerne le Hiéron de Xénophon. C'est particulièrement intéressant pour vous au cas où vous vous poseriez des questions sur la vie tyrannique et ses privilèges potentiels, ainsi que ses avantages par rapport à celle d'une personne normale. Si vous décidez de vous lancer dans une telle lecture, je vous propose de tenter d'analyser les mobiles de chaque personnage au cours de leur conversation, notamment Simonide et Hiéron. Par exemple, vous pouvez vous demander si Simonide admire vraiment les privilèges de la vie tyrannique comme il semble montrer à Hiéron, à quel point Simonide est honnête. De la même manière, puisque Hiéron se méfie des sages comme Simonide, Hiéron est-il honnête sur toutes les choses qu'il méprise concernant sa vie ?

Les plaisirs

Parlons des plaisirs, à un niveau plus cynique, vous êtes-vous déjà demandé si les tyrans et les dictateurs dont vous avez entendu parler prennent un vrai plaisir dans les douleurs et les souffrances qu'ils infligent aux autres ? Il s'agit d'un aspect particulièrement intéressant à étudier car il nous permettra de mieux comprendre les raisons qui sous-tendent leurs décisions. Je vous laisse réfléchir à celui-ci, et n'hésitez pas à répondre ci-dessous dans la section des commentaires.

Maintenant par rapport à Hieron, il semble que sa vie ne lui apporte pas plus d'avantages que celle d'une personne privée/ordinaire. Il dit que l'abondance excessive de choses agréables pour les tyrans diminue l'excitation et la gratification globales qu'ils sont censés en retirer.

Fait intéressant, Hieron exprime une sorte de conscience émotionnelle, notamment lorsqu'il parle de la nécessité pour la luxure et l'amour d'être réciproques. Il lui est difficile de s'engager dans une intimité avec une personne lorsqu'il a l'impression qu'elle est là contre sa propre volonté. Un tel amour non authentique donne lieu à une haine pure et Hiero en est conscient.

Paix et tranquillité

Nous pouvons tous convenir que l'un des sentiments les plus organiques que les humains peuvent et doivent ressentir est la vraie paix, qu'elle soit psychologique ou émotionnelle. À ce sujet, Hiero a exprimé son manque de paix. Imaginez être incapable de vivre votre vie librement en raison de la peur constante de la menace et de la mort qui suit chacun de vos mouvements, tout comme votre propre ombre. Dans ce cas, les tyrans craignent tout, partout et tout le monde, y compris les membres de leur famille. Cela devient une vraie vie de paranoïa. De plus, les gens qui sont gouvernés n'aiment souvent pas leurs dirigeants, il y a toujours le risque d'invasions et de coups d'État lorsque les citoyens ne sont pas contents. Demandez-vous si les pensées de Hiero le transforment en son propre ennemi, cette question propulsera des pensées plus profondes.

Love & Honor

Hieron exprime un désir particulier d'amour, il veut être véritablement aimé. Pour lui, cela conduira à plus de bonté et plus de bonheur dans sa vie. Par exemple, il sera admiré par les personnes qui le servent volontairement et avec bonheur. Le seul problème est que Hieron n'est pas disposé à renoncer à son titre de tyran. Comme solution possible à ces dilemmes, Simonide conseille à plusieurs reprises à Hiéron comment il pourrait devenir un tyran bienfaiteur vertueux. À savoir, il parle des avantages potentiels de Hieron récompensant ses citoyens bienfaisants, un tel engagement augmentera la ressemblance de personnes plus productives. En conséquence, Simonide suggère que la punition désagréable ne doit pas provenir directement du Tyran, ainsi son image sera uniquement associée à des gestes positifs. Monétairement parlant, il serait également préférable que le Tyran considère toujours les avantages à long terme d'investir dans son peuple. Vous vous demandez peut-être à quoi tout cela revient ?

Eh bien, à certains égards, il est juste de dire que Xénophon ne nous donne pas explicitement une réponse quant à savoir si la vie d'un tyran est meilleure ou préférable à celle d'une personne ordinaire. J'ai l'impression que ce sera aux lecteurs d'interpréter. Néanmoins, il a réussi à démontrer comment la vie d'un tyran pouvait être très misérable et paranoïaque. En même temps, il leur propose une solution possible, cela signifie qu'il n'est pas inconcevable d'être juste, bon et aimable comme un tyran. Cela pourrait être précisément pertinent par rapport aux dirigeants et dictateurs communistes de nos temps modernes.
