( thomas doherty + cis male + he/him ) oh them? yeah thats JARED BECKHAM. the SEVENTEEN year old JUNIOR. what do you mean, you don’t know them? They’re BUBBLY, OUTGOING, VAIN and STUBBORN and some even think of WHITE DRESS SHIRTS, FINE LEATHER GOODS, and DIAMONDS when they hear their name.
hi hi everyone!! jules here. i know i’m a little late to the party, but i finally got around to typing up jared’s intro! why don’t you say hello to the high school’s preppy prince? i’m open to all the plots and have a short list of wanted connections bellow that i’d love to get filled up. cheers! xoxo
✧ FACTS
Jared Francis Beckham was born on the 22nd of March in Kensington, United Kingdom. Not even before he turned a year old, his family moved to Paradise Hills and they've been living there since.
He’s an only child. Part of him wishes for a younger sibling, but he’s enjoying the perks of being his parent’s single pride and joy.
Whilst a majority of the town is pretty well off, Jared’s family has always been on the higher end of the social status spectrum. They have what many would call ‘blood money’ from a long line of wealthy predecessors dating back to Queen Victoria’s Era.
Jared was the kid who wore the freshest kicks on the first day of school and always had the newest iPhone. He never failed to gain the ire and envy of his classmates, often being called the ‘spoiled rich boy’ by them.
Like all Beckham men, he had to attend a prestigious private academy in London. He spent two years in an all boys institute after sixth grade. There, he realized that it was okay to find both girls and guys attractive. Eventually, Jared managed to persuade his grandfather to send him back to the States so he can go to high school in Paradise Hills. However, after graduation, he has to go back and get accepted to Oxford.
He adopted a small British accent during his two years in the U.K. His classmates often make fun of him for it.
Jared has a pet Corgi named Cookie.
His family lives in one of the largest houses in Paradise Hills. Jared often throws multiple parties in the compound when his parents are away. One of the biggest events of the year in town is his birthday, which everyone would do anything to get an invitation to.
Jared is a social media influencer on the side. He has over a million followers on instagram.
He has a total of three cars. A Porsche Macan, a Mercedes Benz, and a Range Rover. None of which he’s able to drive. Until now, Jared still hasn’t even obtained his driver’s permit yet.
Jared’s head of the events committee and loves working alongside the student body to set up fun activities for everyone.
He plays tennis and golf in his dad’s country club every weekend.
As the first born of his family’s eldest son, Jared is the number one inheritor of the Beckham fortune and heir to their diamond cartel.
✧ PERSONALITY AND QUIRKS
Even though he has nice things, Jared tries his best not to brag. He often fails at this, but is never one to be a total douche to those who are less fortunate than him.
In school, he’s best known to be the stereotypical prep. Jared smiles and says hi to everyone, even to those he doesn’t particularly like.
He always has gum with him. If your breath stinks, Jared is the guy to help.
Jared can’t function properly in the morning until he gets his caramel frappuccino with an extra shot.
He’s the type of person who actually enjoys listening to trashy bubble gum pop music that the radio tends to overplay.
Cheesy romantic movies are his kryptonite. He loves Nicholas Sparks and has watched The Notebook a billion times.
His usual outfit consists of a polo shirt, khakis, and white Vans that somehow manage to stay immaculately clean. Jared often dresses like he’s going golfing, or playing tennis everyday.
Since his family owns a jewelry business, he likes to do a bit of marketing by wearing various rings, bracelets and watches.
It’s safe to say Jared loves designer brands. He isn’t afraid to go to school with a Louis Vuitton backpack and Gucci prescription glasses.
Jared is the friend who people can trust with anything. He’s great at keeping secrets and hasn’t ever broken a promise. You can definitely rely on him to come with a tub of ice cream and two spoons if any of his best buds are going through a breakup.
Although his charisma is great, Jared’s not the sharpest tool in the shed. He doesn’t particularly struggle with academics, but needs a tutor or two to help him excel on exams. On his own, he can never  achieve higher than a B. This leads Jared to often doubt himself, and doesn’t believe he’ll ever be accepted to Oxford other than the reason his family is part of a lineage there.

Welcome to another profile on Behind the Screens, giving you personal insight on who your favorite creators are and what they do when they aren’t wowing you with their creative ability.
This week, I’m excited to bring to you our first artist, Dalyane, or Da-Smiley99. Although, in her case, a more appropriate title would be jack-of-all-trades. As our resident fic writer, song-inspired pic spam creator, and incorrect quote aficionado, she shares her inspiration behind incorrect quotes, her writing persona, her meta-author plans to dictate Thiam’s relationship, and much more! Take a look :)
So, Dalyane, let’s ease our way into things. Tell us about yourself. The catch: the word count should be equal to or less than the number of letters in your two favorite Teen Wolf characters’ name.
Stiles Stilinski + Theodore Raeken = 25 : My name’s Dalyane, I’m a ray of sunshine in human form. What I want the most is to make people happy with what I do.
And, how did you find the Thiam pack? What about Theo x Liam drew you in?
To be honest, I don’t have the slightest idea. It just came smoothly to me. When I saw Theo and Liam interacting, I was just drawn into it. I was drawn by the silent conversations in their eyes, every word that came out of their mouths that sometimes meant something else or something they haven’t said, their mutual violence towards each other. (I absolutely hate violence, but I don’t know why I’m deeply hypnotized by their banter and their complicated Like/Hate relationship).
I’m like the most oblivious person ever, I wouldn’t even know if somebody is hitting on me, but there’s something romance-worthy (Is that even a word?) about their complicated relationship that drew me in the Thiam fandom.
Not mentioning Theo’s past, Liam eventually learned to trust him at some point even if he was still a little hostile towards Theo. A little part of himself learned to forgive him, so he could fight alongside him. In the entire sixth season, I felt like they developed a whole new relationship based on building trust. Apart, Liam and Theo are quite strong alone, but together they cooperate, fight and act like they were a “whole”. Liam may not trust Theo yet, but I felt like his body, his own being told the opposite. I was extremely glad to see their relationship grow with their characters. So long story short, I just basically just dived into it. And it’s without a damn shame that I can say that I don’t even regret liking them together. And it’s also not because of the amazing, beautiful and breathtaking gifsets on Tumblr...Not at all.
Yes!! That sums up their relationship perfectly and worded so well. Let’s keep that going for a moment. Say this was a ‘Stranger Than Fiction’ situation and you could alter their relationship, their lives with your writing. How would they live through the following scenarios:
a. Their First Date:
Oh, they would know for sure they’re on a date, even if it’s not a date. Theo and Liam would hear my annoying voice every five minutes. Like Liam would ask Theo to hang out at his place, it’s just two dudes hanging out, nothing extraordinary really. But I would still break the nice atmosphere by saying random things that comes from their heads. Like -Wow, Theo’s ass looks great in those Jeans, Liam thought- or -Had Liam’s lips always been that pink?- and God, they would be as red as tomatoes. Awkward much.
b. Their child’s first boyfriend/girlfriend
Theo would absolutely refuse to admit or say out loud that he doesn’t like his child’s significant other. It would hurt his pride, but he doesn’t want to hurt his small bean and his husband, Liam. Of course it’s my job! Theo would be outraged, but it would be so worth it.
c. Their first conflict as an official couple
Because of me, their fight would last for 5 minutes maximum. They would be in a situation where Theo would get jealous because he thought some random guy was flirting with Liam, when in fact he was just being super friendly. So Theo was being an asshole out of jealousy. Liam would start getting angry at him, asking what was his problem but Theo wouldn’t respond. I would just whisper in the air: “Hey, he was jealous you dummy.“ Then they would apologize to each other, followed quickly by a make out session. Yeah, you’re welcome Thiam.
Haha, honestly, they’d be lucky to have you running the show! Piggy-backing off the craziness you’d put them through, sometimes, characters  find themselves in situations they aren’t sure they can get out of. In your life, is there a time you found yourself in a situation like that and what did you do?
Oh god. Almost nothing happened to me in my life. But I will share this particularly embarrassing moment of me. So one day I was going to my high school, I was inside the school bus. But suddenly the bus stopped at my old middle school, then our chauffeur turned to us saying our high school was closed because of the snow.
So we went inside the middle school to call our parents so they can pick us up. But that day my mom was working, so she wasn’t available. My grandma didn’t pick up the phone either. So I was like “I can’t stay here anyway, what should I do?” Then my stupid old self just got out of the school, walking all the way to my home. Yeah, I was pretty stupid back then.
I was freezing and couldn’t see a damn thing in front of me because I was in the middle of a snowstorm. A random guy slowed his car close to me and asked me if I want to get in. Then I remembered what my mom said about getting in a car with a stranger, Oh hell no. I lied saying I was close to home, so he would leave me alone. It worked.
30 minutes later I think, another car stopped close to me and a woman speaks to me, “Get in, I won’t let you freeze on the road.” I hesitated, obviously. Until I saw my friend in the passenger seat. Finally, I got home safely! I was incredibly embarrassed and horrified; I felt like an idiot. I never thought that I would get home. Holy molly, that was terrifying. When my mom asked why I was home early, I lied to her saying that the chauffeur brought all the students home in the morning. Well, I’ll never ever do that again.
Oh my goodness! Girl, I’m glad you got home ok and didn’t freeze to death! Before we jump into your work, who would be on your ultimate paintball/laser tag team. Any five characters from Teen Wolf. Also, Why?
I would have Stiles on my team, because he’s extremely smart and no doubt he would make up an excellent strategy on the field. I would have Theo, he’s also smart, but he’s a bit reckless and surely takes risks a lot so it can come in handy. I would have Malia, she’s a badass and would dominate the field with some girl power! (You go girl!) I would have Corey, he’s very subtle, doesn’t make a sound and he definitely would blend in the background and that is definitely handy for sure. What a great sneaky sniper.
For the last member of my team, I would take Mason, he will probably use his charm and his charisma to lure the opposite team’s members. Or just make jokes and references to his favorite Tv shows. That kinda does the job too.
Perfect! And now your work! *Rubbing my hands together in anticipation*
You do a little bit of it all when it comes to creating for Thiam: fanfiction, fanart, edits, incorrect quotes. Which would you say is your favorite art form? And how do you balance creating them all?
I guess my favorite form of art is writing. I had a talent for writing since I was a kid. I could express myself better on paper than with my voice. Many people had a hard time to believe that everything I wrote came from my mind, because I can’t express myself properly when I talk. For me, writing is an art and fanfics are masterpieces. Writing has been a way for me to escape the real world, my problems and my worries. Writing is a way for me to talk indirectly to readers and expressing my feelings to them through my writing.
It’s kinda hard to balance my creativity in my posts, because I always do something different. If I see something I like on Tumblr, Instagram or Twitter, I tried to include it in them. I always try to get better. I’m trying to find my own style and keep it. I’m saying it again, I want to make people happy with what I do and when I get positive comments on my works, that makes me want to get  better. A part of me does all of this for my followers, to put a smile on their faces or make them laugh. Seeing them happy makes me happy too.
And, if your process was a person, describe them. What do they do? Wear? Listen to?
Well, she’s pretty thoughtful. She always paces back and forth in her room, trying to find a title to her work. She bases her work mostly on the title, that is most of the time based on a song. She’s always in PJ’s and some good old crocs. She just sit on her bed, listening to her favorite songs, TV shows, movies or her favorite YouTubers. She’s a little lazy girl, I guess. I can’t really blame her, it’s how she is. :)
What would you say is both your (and her) Writing Kryptonite, haha? How do you fight it?
It’s really strange, but I can’t write anything if I don’t listen to some music. Music always has been the source of my imagination, I just didn’t realize it until a few months ago. If I don’t have my phone and headphones on me, I can’t do anything. I need music to write. Depending to the meaning, the lyrics and the beat of the songs I listen to, my works change. If I write something sad, I listen to songs about heartbreak, death, breakups, etc. If I write something fluffy and happy, I will listen to songs about happy endings, falling in love, weddings, etc.
When I know exactly what to write (theme, feeling expressed in it and other minimal things), I know instantly what song to listen to. Every time there’s music in my ears, I get in my own writing world and my hands just start tapping on my keyboard on their own. This is pretty unique, huh? Music gets me really emotional and I can’t do anything about it. It’s very strange. Since Music is the source of my creativity and imagination, it’s very rare that I have writer’s block.
To get rid of my writer’s block, I simply sit back on my couch and close my eyes, listening to some soft music. I take a break, because I can’t write something for a whole day, I would get a huge migraine. I would just relax and let everything come to me.
Your love for writing with music. Is that what inspires your song edits, like this one? What makes a song shout Thiam to you? How do you choose images that embody both the song, their relationship, and your writing for it?
I always choose a song that reflects their complicated relationship and what they’ve been through. I choose songs that are very specific for them, that express their banter, their problems and their backstories. Depending on the songs I choose for my edits, the colors, the pictures and themes are different with each one. For example, for a sad song, the colors and pictures of my edits will be darker, the theme of the edit will likely be sadness, sorrow, breakups, etc. For a more happy-go-lucky song, the colors and pictures will be clearer and brighter, and the theme of the edit will be happiness, calmness, comfort, etc.
Everything I do in my edits will change with the song I choose. I chose pictures very carefully, they have to call to me (my creative style, I mean). When I find something perfect for my edits, I just know it. It’s hard to explain it, but I can feel it in my gut when I got something good. I’m a weird phenomenon.
And, incorrect quotes. How do those come to you too? Are they inspired by things you see of hear in everyday life?
Most of them are inspired by my favorite YouTubers: Game Grumps. It’s a gaming channel, where two grown men play some video games while sassing each other, telling semi-bad jokes, swearing 95% of the time and saying perfect incorrect quotes material. Most of them came from the mouth of these awesome guys. Is it the time when I say you should check their channel out? Yeah, go check it, please. :)
Oh wow, one of my roommates watches their channel religiously!! I’ll have to join her sometimes, when I hear them blaring from her room haha. You’ve recently started a new multi-chapter fic, Catch & Release. Can you give us a quick summary, for anyone unfamiliar.
The story happens one year after the events of season 6. A mysterious girl come knocking on Liam and Theo’s door, seeking their help. Her name is Skye Andrews. She’s a true Alpha who’s fighting against an hostile pack that plans to take Canada. When they saw that she wasn’t a threat and saying the truth, Liam and Theo accepted to help her, also accepting coming to Canada.
And did something inspire the concept?
I don’t even know. It just weirdly came to me just like that, while I was listening to the song “Catch & Release” by Matt Simons. The story made itself when I listened to the lyrics of the song. Now you know where the title came from.
Finally, you know I have to ask. Are there any spoilers you can slip us?
Eventually you’ll get to know all of my original characters I included in the story. I can’t give any spoilers, because I still don’t know where this story is going. But here’s something I know for sure: Nolan/Alec and Thiam will be canon at some point in the story, I just don’t know when exactly. But if you want some precise informations, my ask box is always open.
Hahaha, fair enough. I guess we’ll have to read along and see. Ooh--perfect question segway. Bonus Question-if you could read only one author/fanfic writer for a whole year, who would you read? And what story of theirs would you horde?
Without hesitation, I say Captainmintyfresh (@Thiamfresh on Tumblr). I just adore her writing so much. It calls to me and her writing style absolutely hypnotized me. She’s incredibly talented and I just can’t stop reading her works. “Airplanes” is by far her best work. I think everyone should read it; it’s a piece of art, a masterpiece. I’m not even exaggerating. Her writing is truly amazing; it gives me the chills. I really wish I could write like that. She can capture the personality and the dynamic of the characters in the Teen Wolf universe. The way she writes their interactions is truly a treat. Seriously, If I could read her works forever, I would. She’s incredibly talented.
I share that sentiment, wholeheartedly. You’re not alone! Before we wrap, I want to ask about advice because I think it’s amazing when we’re given the opportunity to learn from one another. What’s the best writing/drawing/edit-creating advice you’ve ever gotten? Is there any wisdom you could gift us?
I didn’t get any advice in writing, but I would like to give some. If you are struggling with your writing, just take a breath and lean back to look at your work. If nothing comes out, it’s useless to work endlessly and working your brains out. Just take a break and work on it later. There’s no need to be rushed, take the time you need. Writing can be hard and demands a lot of concentration and creativity. Just take the time you need, take breaks and write everything you like. You are the creator of your story.
What’s next for you? Both in life and the creation world?
Well, I’m taking a year off of college. It was becoming too much for my brain to handle so much anxiety every day. In this year, I will eventually think about where I want to go and what I want to do. Maybe it will shorten my time for writing, but I want to do the most I can. I guess there’s nothing next in the creating segment, I’m just going to continue writing and drawing. But there’s nothing huge specifically.
Any creating is always a perfect amount, so I’m sending you all the luck and inspiration juice in the world! Anything else you’d like to share, in general. The floor is all yours! :)
This concerns anybody reading this. I’m saying this for the third time now, but I’m writing fanfictions, doing edits, drawing fanarts and writing some incorrect quotes for you (all of you). I’m doing this to bring a smile on your faces, make you laugh and make you feel so many different emotions with my work. Seeing you guys happy, makes me incredibly happy. On everything that I do, don’t be shy and comment on my works. If you like my writing style, if you like how I make aesthetics, if you like my incorrect quotes or just quotes in general and if you like my fanarts, go ahead and tell me about those things. I probably won’t respond, because I have a social life outside of Tumblr and I’m actually pretty busy.I want to get better not just for myself, but for all of you. I don’t want to let anybody down and I don’t want to disappoint anybody. I really hope that I meet your expectations. I love each one of you (I’m definitely not crying right now).
Awww! And so with that, BTS presents Dalyane, Da-Smiley99! As always, you can keep the conversation going; respond to any of her thoughts, ask more questions, send a prompt, or simply swing by for a chat with Dalyane anytime. To quote her, she would be “absolutely thrilled” to receive your thoughts! If you’d like to dive into her works, check out both her AO3 and Tumblr.
Tumblr: Da-smiley99
AO3: Dasmiley99
Ask Box: Da-Smiley ask
A huge thank you to her for being so excited about our chat and sharing us piece of her life with us!
Have a Thiam Creator you fan over, from any platform (AO3, Tumblr, Wattpad, Instagram, FFN, etc). Definitely drop us their names. Bonus points if you include any questions you’re dying to ask them.
Likewise, if you as the creator, would like to be a part of the Behind the Screens series, give us a shout too! We’d love to get to know you, as well.

This is for @jaybear1701 who prompted this fic to me. Just a short one shot of some young wayhaught
Tumblr media
"There is no way..." Thin and mousy haired, one teen nudge his friend, setting off a chain of nudges in the packed booth. "You ask her." He had the beginnings of a mustache that only teenagers thought were fashionable and he spoke with a slight southern drawl.
His closest friend, the captain of the football team scoffed. "She's hot… but have you seen her sister?" He shook his head, scrubbing his hand through his short cropped black hair.
"Sounds like a whole lot of excuses, if you ask me." Mousy hair nudged him again, sending him even harder down the line of bodies.
"Hey!" Nicole shoved back just forcefully enough to appear upset when she hadn't minded at all. Just aggressive enough to not appear weak, to keep her sacred bubble of safety and respect.
"Cut it out." Doc and Dolls, or Double Ds as she'd always referred to them, despite their nagging and rough housing, were never apart and had a tendency to let their obnoxious behavior interrupt a fun evening at Shorty's, the local pie shop that served mediocre food with out-of-date music piping from a rusted old jukebox against one wall.
Doc scoffed, any attempt at malice ruined by the fact that they'd been friends for a better part of a decade, since he moved up to Purgatory from Texas. "Make me." Having moved up to Canada from the US of A herself, neither she nor Doc had picked up the strange accent everyone else had.
"Shut up." A hiss came from the other side of the table, forms growing taller and a little more buffed. "She's coming." Nicole watched in disgust as he licked the palm of his hand, smoothing back his dark brown hair that was just long enough to curl against the edge of his ears. Pete could be pretty disgusting… hell all boys could.
It was so stupid, Nicole thought as everyone seemed to be preening. She'd been washing her hands in the bathroom when apparently the waitress had come by before, so she didn't quite understand what everyone was going on about. A group of 6 high school boys bracketing the one female player on the team, Nicole was used to their constant need for attention from every hot girl.
"You guys finally ready to order?"
Nicole barely heard the waitress who suddenly appeared. Waverly Earp. A junior unlike Nicole and the rest of them, she'd seen the girl around campus… as often as possible if she could admit it to herself. If there was anyone who was Nicole's kryptonite, it was all 5' 4" of Waverly Earp. It was like the adorable brunette in jeans cutoffs had an unspeakable pull on her, making her weak in the knees and heart.
They'd been going to Shorty's since junior year and she'd never seen the youngest Earp daughter working there. She couldn't help but wonder if it had to do with her sister, The personification of middle child syndrome, Waverly's sister Wynonna was no doubt a financial burden on their guardian, having been in and out of trouble with the law since their dad died a few years back.
As troubling as it was, it did nothing to curb the smile that danced across Waverly's face.
Nicole needed to find her cool, so she let every one order first. What was she going to order? The food really was bad, but she needed a reason to talk, to plead her case for… what exactly?
Hell if she knew.
Nicole didn't know if it was a blessing or a curse as she got to listen to each and every one of her teammates try to hit on Waverly. She winced with every attempt, watching with both disgust at the way the boys seemed to ooze their axe-scented charm all over the waitress, and pride as Waverly easily parried each advance, never unkind even as she pat Doc on the shoulder and declined his offer to come over for a game of poker. Nicole nearly laughed once or twice but kept silent and gathered her own confidence. They were her friends, but they sucked at flirting.
Finally, eyes the color of rich earth in the Spring landed on her and she swore she saw a smile grow brighter as Waverly saw her sitting here. "What about you, Nicole?"
Nicole felt her heart stop.
Waverly Earp knew her name.
"I…" Her voice cracked, not unlike her friends' voices had during those agonizingly long years of puberty. But she wasn't a teenage boy. Clearing her throat, she smiled. "Sorry. I'm not that hungry but…um," she sat a little straighter, trying to project the charisma that she'd worked years to perfect, "I'd love something sweet..." She could almost feel the eyes of the table turning towards her.
Waverly's smile ever so slightly pulled towards one side, a barely noticeable smirk appearing. "Well, you've come to the right place. We've got 15 types of pie, and just about all of them are worth trying," she paused for the barest of moments before continuing, "and I just wanted to let you know, we have the best darn chocolate ice cream in the town, churned by none other than yours truly."
Nicole rose an eyebrow. "You made it yourself? I don't think I've ever met someone who's made their own ice cream."
"It's great for building upper body strength." Waverly laughed a small nervous laugh, as if wondering why she'd just said that. "I mean… nothing like football or anything." She reached up to push a bit of her hair behind her ear, her smile sweeter than any pie could ever be.
Nicole swallowed audibly, wishing she could nudge the double Ds out of the way so Waverly could tell her all about each and every flavor. They may as well had been alone, just the two of them as the diner dropped away, creating a bubble of comfortable banter.
"Well, I can't let all that hard work go to waste. Can I get it in a shake?"
Waverly nodded, scribbling on her pad. "You sure can. Did you want to get a slice of pie with it?"
"Yeah." Nicole leaned forward. She didn't even like pie that much, but if it meant Waverly would stay even the briefest of moments longer, she would ask about every pie on the menu. "What's your favorite?"
Waverly chuckled softly, having been asked a million times. Normally she'd spout off whatever the special was, usually something that wasn't selling quite as well that day, but something stopped her. "It depends on the day of the week. Sometimes it's apple, sometimes it's pumpkin." She waggled her head back and fourth as if trying to decide. "I love banana cream pie but the chocolate cream is good as well…"
"What's your favorite today?" The words were suddenly so comfortable, Nicole decided. Talking to Waverly Earp was easier than she'd ever thought possible. "Like if you were to order a slice of pie right now, what would that be? Get me whatever that is."
Scribbling words on the pad, Waverly nodded, suddenly realizing she hadn't been paying much attention to the other players. "Alright." She gathered the menus, looking around the table with a smile that was just a hint muted in comparison to the one she gave Nicole. "I'll get that started for ya. You boys keep it down, all right?"
As soon as Waverly stepped away, Nicole nearly laughed when 6 heads swung her way completely.
"Dude."
"Nic…"
"Da fuck…"
Nicole laughed, fiddling with the small bundle of silverware in front of her. "Shut up." She could feel her cheeks burning with embarrassment. Being around Waverly and talking to her, despite her earlier fear, had been as easy as breathing, as natural as her heart beating. The moment their eyes met, without a courtyard of distance between them like there normally was at school, she'd sunk into a gentle pattern she hadn't known she shared with anyone else. Looking around to see jealous eyes watching her, she laughed again, scratching at the side of her neck.
She barely listened to them as they began to exchange rowdy comments back and forth, talking about the other girls in school who, according to their bruised egos, were a hundred times cuter than Waverly Earp.
Still they all sat a little taller, chests puffing out as Waverly returned, barely managing to balance a tray loaded with glasses. "Okay, two cokes…" She began to dish out the drinks, saving the last glass that was filled with dark concoction covered in a swirl of whipped cream, bright sprinkles and a cherry topping it off. That glass, Waverly reached over the table to first set down a square napkin and the glass on the corner of it. "Enjoy." Her eyes locked with Nicole's for a short moment before she winked and turned away, heading over to another table.
Nicole looked down at the drink, or rather at the napkin that sat between it and the table. Each letter and number written in obnoxiously cute form, Nicole let her fingertip brush over the phone number scribbled beneath an inviting Call me and a happy face.
There was no touchdown sweeter than a number scribbled across the cheap napkin. She had the most ridiculous urge to call her now. Preposterous since she could see Waverly across the diner, refilling a glass as she chatted with a customer. How soon would be too soon?
"Holy shit… did she just give you her number?" Dolls leaned over, looking at the napkin even as Nicole pulled out her cell phone. "You know you gotta wait like 3 days before calling right? That's what my brother always said. Can't seem too desperate."
Nicole snorted as she programmed the number into her phone, trying to reign in the giddy sensation that blossomed inside her as she keyed the name Waverly Earp into the contact screen. "You see Dolls," she spoke as she pulled up a text message, typing a simple note. "This is why you are still single," she smiled at him before hitting the send button. "And why your brother is still single."
From across the room, Nicole couldn't help but wonder if Waverly had her phone on her, because it was just seconds before those gorgeous eyes looked over at her even as she continued to speak to her customer. Nicole gave her a smile and she swore she could hear a soft laugh in Waverly's words as she talked about the pie.

290: Willpower 101: 8 Ways to Strengthen This Critical Success Muscle
Willpower predicts academic and professional success better than IQ, or charisma, or having rich parents.
It’s not the only ingredient in our success recipe, but it’s a critical one — and one I certainly struggle with at times.
So how do we get more of it?
Derek Doepker of ExcuseProof.com is an expert when it comes to increasing willpower and strengthening this critical success muscle we all have.
He is the author of 7 bestselling books in personal development, a speaker, consultant, trainer, and specializes in helping individuals create permanent change and achieve mind, body, and business success in as little as 5 minutes a day.
In this episode, we walk through several powerful willpower strategies you can start with today.
Big thanks to my brother Chris for the inspiration for this one. Check out his excellent willpower article at BecomingBetter.org.
1. The Identity Habit
Derek says that our behaviors often stem from our identity. We all have identities and beliefs about ourselves, and it’s really hard to go against what these are.
For example, if you see yourself as someone who is driven, hard-working, and high achieving, and that’s part of your identity, then naturally your behaviors and going to tend to follow these characteristics.
This can also be a negative. Derek said he’s had to change some of his behaviors before. While in high school he would eat a lot of junk food, and there came a point when he knew he wanted to change this habit.
Who Do I Want to Be?
He started reading books on how junk food affects the body, tied this into why he was low on energy and breaking out in acne, and asked himself, “Who do I want to be?”
“I want to be a strong, fit, vibrant person,” Derek said. He knew that by changing his behavior he could work backwards to change his identity by affirming and doing things differently.
Basically, how could he start acting like that future self today?
He cut out eating junk food and started making these changes. As a result, his health improved, and this change in his behaviors helped him to become that image he had of himself.
Motivations
For those struggling to make similar changes, Derek says to look at the short-term and long-term consequences of not making the change to motivate yourself.
“If I would have just said to myself, be a healthy person, I don’t think that would have been motivating,” Derek said. He recommended finding a strong “why” behind making the change you need make.
Decisions vs. Beliefs
One language hack Derek shared was to frame your willpower work as a “decision” instead of a “belief.” For example, “I’ve decided to prioritize my health” is stronger than “I believe I prioritize my health.”
He added there is a big difference between “I don’t,” and “I can’t.” Studies showed that 8 out of 10 people with the “I don’t” mindset get results, with only 1 out of 10 with the “I can’t” mindset get the results they want. (“I don’t eat cake” vs. “I can’t eat cake”, for instance.)
This is because “I can’t” is something that’s forced, rather than feeling like a decision.
2. Keep the Kryptonite Away
“Environment is stronger than willpower.”
The idea here is to make it so you don’t actually have to use your willpower as much — to set up your environment in such a way that positive decisions are the default.
But nobody operates in a vacuum. How do you get the buy-in from family/friends/stakeholders when making changes that are going to both affect those around you, and require the support of people around you?
The strategy here is to put on your salesperson hat and think of what’s in it for them. What mutual goals do you have?
Derek used the example of being an entrepreneur. If you’re on this journey to improve the lifestyle for yourself and our family, if they can see and share that goal they’ll be supportive.
3. “Should Dos” Before “Have to Dos”
This comes down to managing energy vs. managing time for Derek. “When do you have the most energy to handle those things?” he said.
For some people, it will be first thing in the morning, others the afternoon, or maybe even the evening. Derek likes to do his most productive and creative tasks first thing in the morning when he’s fresh and energized.
He’s tried the Miracle Morning routine but doesn’t follow it now. Derek does keep to a 10-minute stretching and voice training routine each morning however.
Is Willpower Finite?
Derek says there are two schools of thought. One is that willpower is a finite resource, and you can use all your willpower throughout the day. Or, if you believe you have infinite willpower, you will have.
From a practical standpoint, Derek adopts the mindset that he can tackle all the tasks he needs to but manages his mental energy while doing so.
“How can I set up my environment and life so that I’m not constantly fatigued having to make these little decisions, or use a lot of willpower and critical thinking,” Derek said. “Find that balance for you.”
4. Today, not Tomorrow
From time-to-time we all talk ourselves into doing something tomorrow instead of today by telling ourselves it doesn’t make a difference to us.
Derek said he faces these decisions himself. He used the example that when he has martial arts training in the evenings and is laying on his bed relaxing after work he questions if he has the energy to go.
“Who do I become if I make a decision to be lazy or take the comfortable route,” Derek said. “It’s more important to me to go to that class in that moment just because it changes something about your identity and who you are.”
It’s who you become when you take those actions that show you have willpower. It shifts your identity and shows you can push through adversity.
5. “State Management”
This refers to your emotional state. There are times we are in a state of flow, and times when we just want to sit back and do nothing.
To be more productive Derek said we need to ask ourselves, “What can I do to change my state.”
For example, trying to go from sitting down watching Netflix to exercising is too large of a jump to be motivation enough. We need to find ways to change our state to get to the task we want to complete.
Derek changes his state before giving a talk or doing some other business activities that require focus by getting up and walking or doing some other form of physical movements, or even putting on some music.
He also said that we shouldn’t make decisions until we’re in the right state. This ties into the above example, don’t make a decision on whether or not to exercise while sitting in a chair.
First, get up and do some light exercise then ask yourself if you want to carry on. You’re much more likely to make the decision to exercise once you’ve started.
6. The 20-Second Rule
The principle behind the 20-second rule is to work with your psychology, not against it. Make the things that are temptations hard to get to and make the things you want to do easy to access.
Derek used the example of recording videos. It would take him ages to set up everything to start recording videos, so he’d put it off. He invested in a different set up that was a lot quicker to ready up for recording and he was a lot more productive as a result.
7. Micro Habits
Derek uses the, “Can I just…?” technique to help people overcome larger obstacles without them feeling overwhelming.
For example, if he wants to clean his whole apartment and it looks daunting he will ask himself, “Can I just clean my desk first?” then this will lead into another small cleaning task, and other, and eventually his whole apartment.
Or, he will ask himself if he can meditate for 30 seconds or a minute, then another minute, and keep adding small amounts until he’s meditated for 10 minutes or so.
Derek said this technique is especially powerful for entrepreneurs as one of the biggest challenges they face is the perfectionist trap.
Using “Can I just?” is also giving yourself permission to do something that isn’t any good, but you open the door and start gaining momentum towards something that is great.
8. Challenge Yourself and Setting Deadlines
Could you give yourself a challenge to change a habit for 30 days? Could you sign-up for a 10k race in 2 months?
“I personally love challenges and deadlines,” Derek said. Derek has found with a lot of his clients that the right kind of deadline makes a huge difference to their willpower to get something done.
Don’t just rely on external deadlines, set yourself your own deadlines. Make them public if applicable to give you that extra accountability too.
Where Willpower Fails
There are two main reasons why Derek sees some of his clients experiencing failure;
The first is failing to have a reminder to prompt you to take action. This may mean scheduling things, setting reminders, or leaving a certain item out where you’re going to see it and remember to do something.
The second failure point is a 3-part process Derek calls, “Cue, routine, reward.” Don’t forget to give yourself credit for what you’re doing and own your wins to keep you motivated.
