POV Introduction #0
The Narrator. They tell you what has happened/happening/will happen in Hogenroe. They exist inside, above, and below this story but never directly interact with the other story-world characters.
No, they're not in the library, don't even ask.
Tumblr media
They don't get in-depth focus like the other points of view, but while the Narrator lacks personal transparency, they compensate with (mostly) straightforward Hogenroe-related facts and anecdotes.
Before each new story-world season (and therefore a new story-world character POV), the Narrator will have a short section of clarifying remarks and/or summary for things that didn't make it in the previous character's story portion.
They are sharing a story of Hogenroe with you. They have shared many stories of Hogenroe with you.
The Narrator's Color Is Black.

POV Introduction #3
Yogelov Sylov Din. Yogelov is the 3rd story-world character you follow in Hogenroe. His family immigrated from Wollwiss to Hogenroe when he was a baby.
Tumblr media
Character Inspiration for Yogelov Din:
Tommy Pickles - Rugrats (1991-2004, TV Series)
Clark Kent aka Superman (Kal-El) - DC Comics (1938 -Present)
Dory - Finding Nemo & Finding Dory (2003 & 2016, Film Franchise)
A Literal Sunflower - brought to Europe in the 16th century
Willy Wonka - Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory (1972 Film)
Finn Mertens aka Finn the Human - Adventure Time (2010-2018, TV Series)
Danny - Cats Don't Dance (1997 Film)
Spongebob Squarepants - (1999 - Present, TV Series)
Yogelov was raised to believe his incredible strength and nigh invulnerability are not only gifts, but blessings, and blessings always bring duty.
Yogel must help anyone who needs him. No matter the risk.
The weight of this duty is immense. All the more appropriate that the strongest man in Hogenroe carry it. The weight is also lightened by Yogel's brighter than sunshine optimism and gratitude for the wonderful people he lives and fights for.
For instance, Yogel's fellow professor and boyfriend of four years, Zaiah. Zaiah deciding to quit his professorship and move out of their apartment is a bit of a shock, but the temporary separation will only make them stronger.
There's also Yogel's family, who are always so proud of him. They're not completely aware of the more "dramatic" moments of Yogel's life, but his omission of a detail or a dozen is to spare them the worry. Honestly.
He's even grateful for the crabby new arrival Kmar Moadh. The man insists on being strictly impersonal towards Yogel, but perhaps assisting with Kmar's worsening "dead lookalikes" problem is the winning ticket to a new friendship.
All in all, despite the slight complications, Yogelov expects another good year in Hogenroe.
Now if only he can keep ignoring the little voice in the back of his mind.
Yogelov's Color Is Blue. Here is his playlist.

POV Introduction #?
Dr. Isapyra Hollyberry. Isapyra is a story-world POV character we follow in. Well. Not Hogenroe. At least not at first. She is also from a legacy family; the Hollyberries have been in Hogenroe since the very beginning.
Tumblr media
Character Inspiration for Isapyra Hollyberry:
Andie Walsh - Pretty in Pink (1986, Film)
Dr. Pamela Isley aka Poison Ivy - Batman (since 1966, DC Comics)
Princess Ariel - The Little Mermaid (1989, Film)
Ginger Foutley - As Told By Ginger (2000-2004, TV Show)
Blossom - The Powerpuff Girls (1998-2005, TV Show)
Angela Chase - My So-Called Life (1994-1995, TV Show)
Helen Parr - The Incredibles (2004 & 2018, Film Franchise)
Sam - Totally Spies! (2001-2008, TV Show)
Isapyra (who is not yet called Isapyra) is a shy bookworm who loves her family's orchard, her always complaining cat, and the only home she's ever known, Hogenroe.
Those loves, however, cannot distract her from some increasingly troubling questions; why does anything related to Isapyra's grandmother make her mother go cold? Why does the coven in the deep wood curse her family? Why aren't witches allowed to fly at night? Why does she incessantly dream about other versions of Hogenroe?
Despite the nagging questions and dreams Isapyra grows into a brilliant, determined young witch (even if her parents can't see it) with the stern but warm mentorship of her teacher Mrs. Kilner and the close friendship of her precocious new classmate, Avadine. Life for Isapyra is complicated, but she knows one day she can make sense of it.
Or.
Isapyra Hollyberry in her post-academy years spends her days arguing with unicorns at the zoo and her nights arguing with faceless strangers at one of the largest expert question-answer services in the country. The dream of unlocking the secrets of her family, the coven in the woods, of Hogenroe, all of the Hogenroes, has been replaced with paying rent on time.
Or.
Isapyra Hollyberry has been dead for 13 years.
Isapyra's Color Is Purple. Here is her playlist.

Purely coincidental that I posted Iveta's mini-intro during (US/UK) Lesbian Visibility Week, but! There you go! Iveta as a character is such an absolute joy to brainstorm for and write for and you'll see her bloom into her beautiful lesbian self in... A Year in Hogenroe!

POV Introduction #2
Iveta Norwoode. Iveta is the 2nd story-world character we follow in Hogenroe. Iveta is from a legacy family, meaning the Norwoodes have lived in Hogenroe since Walther Hogenroe's official takeover.
Tumblr media
Character Inspiration for Iveta:
Lisa Simpson - The Simpsons (1989 - , TV Show/Franchise)
Susie Carmichael - Rugrats (1991-2004, TV Show)
Harriet M. Welsch - Harriet the Spy (1996 Film)
Karen Beecher aka Bumblebee (2003-2006, TV Show)
Khadijah James - Living Single (1993-1998, TV Show)
Iridessa - Tinker Bell (2008-, Film/Franchise)
Valerie Gray - Danny Phantom (2004-2007, TV Show)
Velma Dinkley - Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? (1969- , TV Show/Franchise)
Iveta Alice Norwoode is a rarity in Hogenroe; a professor who actually teaches! When Iveta isn't pushing her 1st and 2nd year students to take potion making and cauldron-minding seriously, she is fighting alongside with her non-teaching co-workers (and specifically one of her best friends since Novice school, Yogelov Din). There is little doubt about it, Iveta is an irreplaceable asset to the team.
All the more frustrating that she feels, knows, that that is not enough.
Iveta shoved much of her personal life to the side to be the perfect professor: her strained relationship with her mother and younger sister only made worse with the unexpected death of her father (also a perfect professor), her passion for all things automobile, and an infatuation with a certain Hogenroe Academy mechanic (who may or may not have noticed Iveta as well).
But none of that comes before the job. It is another year in Hogenroe, and another year for Perfect Professor Norwoode.
One would assume.
Iveta's Color Is Yellow. Here is her playlist.

POV Introduction #1
Kmar Moadh. Kmar is the first story-world protagonist we follow in the town of Hogenroe. He's surrounded by strangers who seem to already know so much about him...
Tumblr media
Character Inspiration for Kmar:
Charlie Brown - Peanuts (since 1950)
Batman - DC Comics (since 1939)
John Constantine - DC Comics (since 1985)
Chunky Rice - Goodbye, Chunky Rice (1999 Graphic Novel)
Harold Chasen - Harold & Maude (1971 Film)
Bob Belcher - Bob's Burgers (2011- TV Show)
Nicholas Angel - Hot Fuzz (2007 Film)
Eeyore - Winnie the Pooh (since 1926)
Kmar is living a privileged yet predictable life. One bizarre telephone conversation leads to another, and very soon he's left his home country of Pimmgrin and arrived in a Ubormokten town called Hogenroe. He'll do what ever these so-called professors (who don't even teach!) say to have this nonsense settled and done with, and provided people aren't completely out of bounds, he'll remain polite.
So begins Kmar's immersion into this peculiar place; where a lonely woman of means confuses him for a professor, an annoyingly charming professor confuses him for an applicant, and a beautiful vampire princess simply confuses him.
Everyone insisting he's the spitting image of various dead men is a touch perplexing as well.
Kmar's Color Is Green. Here is his playlist.

I think what I'm aiming for with "A Year in Hogenroe" is a narrative that can be humorous and kind, that acknowledges that sometimes off-putting/strange doesn't automatically mean "dangerous", that people should try harder to accept the eccentrics amongst us (and within themselves!).
But I want to make it clear horrific things happen in this story. Sometimes "on-screen", most times implied. I don't write anything graphic because that's not my tempo but the stakes for the characters in Hogenroe are very very fucking real.

Hogenroe Character Highlight!
The Honorable Lady Victoria voff Spaater is a resident of Hogenroe. She is not a POV character, but she is a significant player in the town's happenings.
Tumblr media
Character Inspiration for Victoria:
Princess Tiana - Princess and the Frog (2009 film)
Countess Vampira - Vampira (1974 film)
Miranda Killgallen - As Told By Ginger (2000-2006 TV show)
Megan Thee Stallion from heaven
Starfire AKA Koriand'r - Titans (2018-2023 TV show)
Hilary Banks - The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990-1996 TV show)
Toni Childs-Garrett - Girlfriends (2000-2008)
Whitley Gilbert-Wayne - A Different World (1987-1993 TV show)
Victoria is a 152-year-old 27-year-old and the proud leader of the vampiric house voff Spaater. When not being mysterious and alluring, she busies herself with reading romance novels and occasionally helping the professors fight Hogenroe's various evils.
Victoria is closest to Kmar, the new man in town, and through the different tales of Hogenroe, you'll see how perhaps the relationship between the two is much more complex than originally presented.
But then again, maybe she's just hungry.
Victoria's Color Is Pink. Here is her playlist.

In all honesty my logic for using a 1910s via the 1960s aesthetic (see all the 60s-70s movies I posted to get an idea) is purely author appeal. I think the shit looks dope! End of story lol
But. If I was being forced to get a more in-depth answer, A Year in Hogenroe is about time as a literal and cultural thing; moving forward but also moving backward but also standing still, cycles, overlapping perfectly but not too perfectly. I've always loved stuff like that; like when electro-swing became big in the early 90s or especially The Teddy Boys of 50s - early 60s. These sub-cultures are confirmation (to me at least) that I'm not so off the mark.
Another motivation is my interest in consciousness and dreaming. Both eras have books upon books about connecting to higher planes of existence and "opening your mind", and while I gotta filter out a lot of offensive stuff (the past being interesting but imperfect is another theme haha) what remains is still so thought-provoking.
