Synopsis: After six years apart, you end up reconnecting with your ex-SAS partner, James Conrad. . . In more ways than one.

A/N: Holy rabies y’all--this fic disappeared for an entire day, but thank the smut gods because it randomly reappeared. This one was requested by Anon, I hope you like it!

Your finger traced the rim of your coral-lipstick-stained glass, absentmindedly passing the time before the rest of the group showed up.

The bar was dark and moody, but somehow still light with laughter and music, and the occasional cheer from the direction of the pool table. It smelled of burgers and beer, and the stools next to you were occupied by two younger women who had clearly had too many drinks.

You were nervous. Your leg was bouncing on the rung of your stool, unable to keep still as your mind flipped back and forth from he won’t be here to he absolutely might. Quite frankly, you weren’t sure which thought you wanted to believe more.

It had been three years since you’d last seen him, since you’d fought together as partners, and since you’d nearly died together on a remote island that was still a secret to the world. There was no telling that he was even still working with the team, or if he’d moved on or been transferred like you were.

“I love your hair,” the man to your right said, pulling you from your thoughts.

“Oh, thank you,” You said with a curt smile, turning slightly away from his ogling gaze. From the corner of your eye you saw him reach out to touch the black scarf that was tied on you like a headband, and in one swift movement you slapped his hand away, grabbed your drink, and spun off of the stool.

“(Y/N)!” A familiar voice shouted, and your eyes scanned the room for the source.

“Farrah!” You yelled back, waving your hand at your ex-colleague who was bouncing and waving back excitedly.

You made your way across the room, and from behind Farrah came John, who greeted you with a wide smile and a tight hug, and Rocky, who did the same.

“So, California?” Farrah yelled, throwing her arms around you.

You shrugged with a laugh. “It’s alright I guess.”

“It’s fucking beautiful!” She said, jabbing her thumb in the air over her shoulder. “Like, did you see that sunset? And the palm trees?”

You nodded, grinning and feeling your nerves slip away just as quickly as they had shown up. The conversation was light and easy, and you were all clearly standing in peoples’ way, but none of you could find it in you to care.

“Valet was interesting,” Came a new voice from behind John, and your eyes flickered up to meet striking blue ones.

Shit.

“(Y/N).” James said, blinking hard in shock. His voice was smooth like butter, and had matured significantly since you’d last spoken.

Six years worth of memories and pent up emotion hit you like a train, creating a pit in your stomach and butterflies in your chest.

“Conrad,” You countered, grinning at his doe-eyed expression. You caught him off-guard, and you took pride in that.

The others erupted into an excited pocket of chaos, meeting him with hugs and slaps on the back and “We didn’t think you would show up!”

The group migrated to a corner booth, and you slid in next to your ex-partner.

“What have you been up to?” John asked excitedly, flagging down a waitress to order appetizers and waters.

“Oh, you know–”

“Did you know that John is married?” Farrah interrupted, a glimmer in her eye. “He has kids!”

James raised his eyebrows, smiling cunningly across the table. “Mister ‘I’ll never settle down’ has settled down?”

John laughed and waved a dismissive hand. “Did you know that Rocky is married? That’s more newsworthy to me!”

That shocked even you, who thought you’d stayed well connected to everyone. “Who’s the lucky lady?” You asked, leaning forward on the table.

“Or man,” James added, shooting you a sly smirk.

Rocky rolled his eyes and took a long drink of water. He looked up through his eyelashes, giving each of you a pointed look. “His name is Fin, and we are very happy.”

James leaned down to where his lips just barely brushed against the shell of your ear. “Won’t say I told you so,” He said lowly, loud enough that only you could hear it over the commotion.

“You just did,” You countered, shifting to meet his eyes.

The atmosphere around you changed, and you knew he felt it too. You were close, close enough that if you even turned your head the slightest, your lips would touch his.

“So what about you, Captain?” You said lowly, “Have you settled down, found your happily ever after?”

He chuckled. “Afraid not, Commander.” You noticed the way his eyes looked you over, the way he drank you in, and you allowed yourself a moment to do the same.

He hadn’t changed much, but the muscles in his arms were more defined, and he wore more scars on his tanned skin. There were lines by his eyes from smiling, and his sharp jawline brought back memories from SAS training, when you had him pinned to the wall of your cabin and your lips were on his skin, wishing you could do what you both knew you couldn’t.

He would always stop before things could go too far, his chest heaving and his lips swollen from your own, and no matter how difficult it was, he’d always manage to get out a strained ‘we can’t.’ before stepping away.

“How about yourself?” He asked, his eyes flickering down to your lips. “Have you settled down?”

You lowered your voice, sparing a glance towards the others, who were happily conversing about Rocky’s marriage. “Afraid not.”

James looked as if he was about to say something else, but Farrah’s voice broke through the little bubble that surrounded you.

“(Y/N), did you hear that? John’s kids think you’re an actual superhero!”

You laughed and shook your head. “That’s adorable!”

“It’s true!” John insisted, “I showed them a picture of you and they hung it up on their wall. I told them you’re a hero, and they took that to mean a superhero.”

“Makes sense to me,” James said coolly, “None of us would be here if it wasn’t for you. We would’ve died on that island.”

You playfully swatted his arm, dismissing the thought with a wave of your hand. “I appreciate it, but the same could be said about all of you.” Your hand went back down to the booth cushion, but instead of cool leather, you were met by the unmistakable warmth of James’ hand.

His fingers quickly closed around yours, making sure you didn’t try to go anywhere. The gesture alone was enough to make you lose your breath. The others moved on to talk about their new positions, but you weren’t focused on any of it. All you could feel was James’ fingers slowly trailing up your arm and back down, leaving goosebumps in his wake.

You found yourself slowly moving closer to him, only stopping when your legs met under the table. He cautiously let his hand brush against your leg, testing your reaction, asking for permission, then moving his touch back up to your arm. Without a second thought, you took his hand and placed it right back on your bare thigh.

You spared a glance in his direction, and you wouldn’t even be able to tell that just under the table, his hand was creeping up your thigh and slowly making you come undone. He engaged himself in the conversation so well, drawing you into it every now and then as his fingers slipped underneath the hem of your skirt.
