Aforementioned long ask post please excuse me while i try to figure out tumblr's new text editor. I’ll get into the art meme questions first and then the rest at the end.

Ok first of all thank you all for sending in questions! Giving me an excuse to talk hehe. I’ll address these in number order. Here’s a link to the ask meme for reference but also I’ll restate the question for ease of reading.

1. When did you get into art?

Super cliche answer but I don’t remember a time where I WASN’T the weird art kid! I started keeping a dedicated sketchbook when I was about 12? But here’s a page from my kindergarten journal about what I want to be when I grow up.

2. What art-related sites have you ever signed up for?

LOL this is a weird question. Not sure why so many people want to know. Anyways I definitely had a dA. more than one dA account. I used to browse oekakis when I was a kid but I think I was only signed up to some small ones that internet friends owned. What else...? Mangabullet,Tegakie, Paintberri, iscribble back when that was a thing, instagram if that COUNTs, I used to post art on livejournal and dreamwidth too. Patreon, I guess. Gumroad, inprnt, bigcartel, storenvy all for selling stuff.

In terms of resources.. I have a schoolism account that I’m sharing with friends. Used to take classes on coursera for free. I signed up to textures.com for work recently haha. I can’t remember if I ever had an account on posemaniacs. Did they have accounts...? I definitely used to visit all the time.

3. Show us your oldest piece of art you have on hand.

Alright here’s me actually logging into my old deviantart account. These are from September 2008 So I was 13 years old. I don’t have a deviantart account from before then because 13 was the required age for having an account and I didn’t want to lie about my age because I wanted people to be impressed by how young yet clearly incredible at art I was LOL.

4. What defines your artistic style?

You guys are probably more equipped to answer this than me but uh... I wanna say... Focus on colors. And... a slightly heavy hand? Like confident... not always well-considered mark making HAH...

Also I think I have a pretty healthy mix of american comics/manga influences. I feel like people who are into american comics always think my art is too manga and people who are into anime/manga always think my art is too american. And I’m taking that as a good sign.

5. Do you practice other styles/have you tried other styles in the past?

I like to think I switch it up a bunch! I mean, these are pretty different, right?

I think I’ve mentioned this before but one thing I really took away from art school is that, for an illustrator at least, art style shouldn’t be consistent. Your greatest weapon is changing the aspects of your style based on the task, the emotions and message you want to illustrate etc. So depending on the project I’m working on, the fandom I’m drawing for, whether I want something to be funny or serious or dramatic, I’ll change things about my style all the time.

One thing I don’t rly post on here is really tight polished work and that’s because I do that for my day job haha. If you’re not paying me... I’m probably not gonna color in the lines.

6. What levels of artistic education have you had?

I have a whole ass diploma LOL. Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration. from the Rhode Island School of Design. And I had a great college experience tbh. Besides the student loans. If any of you guys are thinking about art school feel free to e-mail or message me questions or concerns, I’ll be happy to help. Be as honest as I can be.

7. Show us at least one picture you drew or sketched recently that you did not put on a public site.

8. What is your favourite piece that you have done?

Well, obviously this is gonna change all the time and generally it’s gonna be my most recent piece LOL. So yeah, why the hell not. I’ll say it’s this one. I have a pretty short memory which I count as a blessing for an artist. I don’t dwell that long on older work and it keeps me moving forward.

10. What do you like most about your art?

I like that it’s something that only I would make! I had this thought fairly recently and I wrote it down in my sketchbook, it’s pretty cheesy and rambling but it felt revolutionary at the time:

So yeah. I like my art best when it’s the most me and for me. And I like it least when it feels like I’m just making something for social media or for other people’s expectations or whatever.

14. What do you like drawing the most?

Kids in baggy clothing are like my go-to LOL idk if that’s obvious. but also I like being challenged so lately I’ve really loved drawing multi-character compositions, environments, weird angles, etc.

oh i LOVE drawing the underside of shoes lol. And bandages. People that are kinda beat up.. I think it comes from getting a bunch of cuts all the time. I’m always patching myself up and I want to patch characters up too.

15. What do you like drawing the least?

mmm I try to find something to like in every drawing but lets see... I don’t like doing commissions of people’s dogs. Just because it’s normally like... a family friend and my mom volunteered me without my consent and I don’t even really know what they’re expecting me to draw and I don’t even get to meet the dog. Also I’m not that great at dog anatomy. Trying to learn though.

18. What is your purpose for drawing?

This could have a million answers! Uhhh to GIT GOOD??? But also to express myself... and also to make money... I mean it depends on what the drawing IS. I draw fanart mostly to connect to people in the fandom so if you ever see me drawing fanart please take it as like an open invitation to talk to me about the character haha.

20. How would you rank your art? (poor, mediocre, good, etc.)

Good!!! I have a lot of self-confidence primarily born out of ignorance and a short attention span. If I don’t think too hard about how many other artists are mindblowingly unfathombly good... its easy to think I’m good too! LOL

In all seriousness though, I think the opinion a person has of their art is like a crazy balancing act, right? Like you have to think you suck enough to want to get better but also you have to think you’re good enough to not want to give up. I think we’re all walking that line, I know I am! But also I’m a glass half-full type of person so. Most of the time I feel good about it.

22. List at least one of your “artspirations.”

This is a good question because I’ve been trying and failing to put together one of those “influence map” memes for like a full month now. What’s giving me a hard time is I feel like none of these are actually really obvious “““influences”““ in my art? Like it’s hard to see a lot of them in the work I make...? But idk maybe you guys’ll see what I can’t.

And these are just a couple! God there’s so many more. I could talk about other artists for ages, from all different genres of art. Daumier, Rockwell like every illustrator out there, Dana Gibson, Alex Toth, Hiroshi Yoshida, a lot of the Brandywine School. Lots of current working artists too, Karl Kerschl, frikkin Masashi Kishimoto lol, Jake Wyatt, Richie Pope, Edouard Caplain, Matt Cook, Sachin Teng, - lots of big internet artists, Sophie Li, Freddy Carrasco, Milliofish, Angela Sung... like all my friends from art school too. I could just keep going but I’ll stop for now lol.

24. Do you have a shameful art past? (recolour sprite comics, tracing art, etc.)

I mean if that’s how we’re defining shameful?? sure LOL. It’s not sprite comics but I used to do pokemon sprite recolors all the time. And I used to trace manga panels and color them... Granted this was all when I was like under 12 yrs old so it’s not even embarrassing. Can you really call it shameful when a 7 year old wets the bed or whatever? Not really. In fact some of these are cool as fuck. Look

25. Draw a picture!

Man I’m so tired now but here.

I used to get a lot of compliments for drawing people smiling lol but I don’t think I’ve drawn a lot of smiling lately.. here’s proof I’ve still got it.

I think a lot of artists on social media talk about the struggle of making art but imo not enough people talk about the joy! Like I know it’s corny but. I really meant what I said at the beginning of that sketchbook about re-contextualizing art around process and progress > product and perfection. I think its super important..! The strength of messy, unfinished, and energetic art! For the feeling of it, for the love it!

Hi! I totally have the answer for digital stuff on my faq lol. But in terms of drawing on paper.. it varies! I tend to use sketchbooking and any on-paper doodling I do as a way to loosen up/warm-up or experiment. But right now my go-to aresenal is:

- grey tombow double brush pens

- good ol bic mechanical pencil

not EXACTly sure which inking you referring to from my sketchbook but if I had to take a guess it'd probably be the kuretake no55. That's been my main inker, lately. Great for sketching with the thin end too.

NSFW Alphabet: Ota

Note: It is here, the final one for the bidders. (Or at least until I manage to play Luke, Shuichi, and Hikaru’s routes/ also figure out how to write Rhion). Both of his parents have darker brown hair and he does have that brassy strawberry blonde you get when you bleach dark hair and don’t use any toner. I also, don’t think he has a lot of body hair. Voltage generally tends to make all the men look like they have no body hair in their cgs (which doesn’t always suit the character), but I honestly don’t think Ota grows much body hair. A fact he’s fine with. So, his pubic hair is a small slightly thin patch of darker brown hair. It doesn’t require much upkeep.

I = Intimacy (How are they during the moment, romantic aspect…)

Unless something has happened to make Ota feel like him or his partner really need that during sex, he prefers for it to be more dirty and fun. 1. What’s their full name? Why was that chosen? Does it mean anything?

- Her full name is Kylia Lucis Caelum. Her name was chosen from her father liking one name (Kylis) and her mother liking another (Ilia), and instead of choosing between the two, they decided to mash them together. Luckily, it turned out well.

2. Do they have any titles? How did they get them?

- She does; Her Royal Highness, Princess of Lucis. She acquired it by being born to royalty.

3. Did they have a good childhood? What are fond memories they have of it? What’s a bad memory of it?

- Her childhood was rather tumultuous. It was good overall, but her being a princess didn’t help it any. Fond memories include numerous times her mother would brush her hair, any times she and her brother played together, being able to be with her parents at all. A bad memory would be her mother’s passing.

4. What is their relationship with their parents? What’s a good and bad memory with them? Did they know both parents?

- Her relationship with her parents was a little strained, but otherwise really good. One of her good memories of them together are any of the times they would be able to put her to bed or otherwise spend time with her before bedtime when she was young. She has a particularly bad memory of when she was young; she was five and really wanted to spend time with her parents, playing, reading, dress up, tea parties, anything. However her parents, being the King and Queen of Lucis, were incredibly busy and burdened with their duties. They had told her they couldn’t at that moment, as they had many times before, and she just snapped at them, yelling how they were always too busy for her and she would never important enough. They ultimately postponed any other duties for the rest of the day and spent with her and her brother.

5. Do they have any siblings? What’s their names? What is their relationship with them? Has their relationship changed since they were kids to adults?

- She has one older brother; Noctis Lucis Caelum. Her relationship with him in the present is not where she would like it to be, and she tries her hardest to make it better. When they were kids they were extremely close (they are roughly 11 months apart in age), but as they grew up and their responsibilities grew and changed with them, they haven’t been as close as they once were, which Kylia wishes weren’t the case.

6. What were they like at school? Did they enjoy it? Did they finish? What level of higher education did they reach? What subjects did they enjoy? Which did they hate?

- She was an excellent student in her tutoring sessions and ultimately at the Royal Academy. She thoroughly enjoyed her studies, and she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in only a year and half after her high school education at 19 due to the college classes she took during high school. She enjoyed most of her classes, some favorites being the fine arts classes, history, and english. She was okay with math and most sciences, but she absolutely despised chemistry.

7. Did they have lots of friends as a child? Did they keep any of their childhood friends into adulthood?

- Being the princess, she wasn’t given the opportunity to have too many friends a child. However, in her small circle of friends, she has kept all of them into adulthood; Lunafreya nox Fleuret, Ravus nix Fleuret, Trinity Lasitene, her brother, and Gladiolus Amicitia.

8. Did they have pets as a child? Do they have pets as an adult? Do they like animals?

- Unfortunately, she was able to have pets as a child as she wasn’t responsible enough to care for one on her own; as an adult she is now unable to own one due to her duties and responsibilities. However, she loves animals, and she love to own a dog someday.

9. Do animals like them? Do they get on well with animals?

- Animals like her rather well, however, for some reason cats do not tend to be fond of her.

10. Do they like children? Do children like them? Do they have or want any children? What would they be like as a parent? Or as a godparent/babysitter/etc?

- She likes children well enough. She isn’t fawning over them all the time, but she will be kind and gentle with them and try to be a good role model for them. She doesn’t have any children, but she would want them if she was married and deeply in love with her spouse. She worries sometimes that she wouldn’t be a good mother, but in reality she would be much like her own mother, gentle and patient and always loving. If she were anything other than a parent, however, she wouldn’t be as confident in her nurturing abilities.

11. Do they have any special diet requirements? Are they a vegetarian? Vegan? Have any allergies?

- She isn’t a vegan or vegetarian, but she tries her best to eat as healthy as she can. But sweets are a thing, so she has some trouble with being consistent. She doesn’t have any allergies.

12. What is their favourite food?

- She loves many kinds of food, so it’s hard for her to choose. However, some of her tops are noodles of any kind, spicy foods, many Galahdian dishes, and cakes.

13. What is their least favourite foods?

- She tends to dislike certain ingredients; cherries, sour cream, whipped cream, pudding, mushrooms.

14. Do they have any specific memories of food/ a restaurant/meal?

- Yes; during her secret relationship with Nyx, he introduced her to the packaged noodles that were from Galahd and she absolutely fell in love with them. After that he would bring her freshly made noodles when he could and they would picnic in her room together.

- She isn’t the worst at cooking, considering she’s only cooked a handful of times, but she’s enjoyed it when she has. Only Trinity has tried her cooking, and she gave her a few tips to improve for the next time.

- She doesn’t actively collect anything; the things that would come closest to being collected would be clothes and video games. She loves playing and wearing them. Video games are in her media center and clothes are in her massive walk-in closet.

- Kylia hadn’t been interested in it too much until she met Prompto. As they became friends she became more interested in it. When she does take photos, she takes photos of what seems like everything, including selfies sometimes. However, she loves taking aesthetic photos the most. She doesn’t really do anything with them currently, but she’ll show Trinity and the guys.

- Kylia absolutely loves musicals (she wishes she could be in one), and she loves music. If her favorite song comes on, she either dances or sings like she’s performing it.

- She doesn’t really have to much of a temper, because she can be pretty patient. If she ever does lose her temper, her become sharp and can cut like a knife. A quiet rage kind of temper because she knows she can go on a tangent if she speaks.

22. What are their favourite insults to use? What do they insult people for? Or do they prefer to bitch behind someone’s back?

- She doesn’t have a particular favorite; sometimes they don’t even make sense. If she insults someone, it’ll be about their character. She will be harsh and sarcastic to their face, but prefers to actually insult them and bitxh behind their back.

23. Do they have a good memory? Short term or long term? Are they good with names? Or faces?

- She has a great long term memory, not so much with her short term memory. She is, however, really good with names and faces.

24. What is their sleeping pattern like? Do they snore? What do they like to sleep on? A soft or hard mattress?

- Her sleeping pattern is overall pretty good, but it can get pretty awful if any circumstances come into play. She doesn’t tend to snore, but if she does it’s really quiet. She likes to sleep on her stomach, one of her legs bent out to the side, the other straight out, and cuddling her pillow. She prefers a decently hard mattress with a little softness in it.

25. What do they find funny? Do they have a good sense of humour? Are they funny themselves?

- Kylia finds many things funny; videos, photos, people, situations. She has a good sense of humor most of the time. She tries to be funny, but it doesn’t always work. However, when she isn’t trying, she tends to be much funnier than when she is.

26. How do they act when they’re happy? Do they sing? Dance? Hum? Or do they hide their emotions?

- She can hide her emotions rather well, but around those she trusts, she will just tend to be in a really good mood and act accordingly. Occasionally, she’ll sing.

27. What makes them sad? Do they cry regularly? Do they cry openly or hide it? What are they like when they’re sad?

- Before the Fall, not much made her sad, just not being able to see her father and brother too often and the weight of her title and what came with it, with an occasional sad video or picture. After the Fall, the entire situation of what Lucis now is. She absolutely does not cry regularly. When she cries, she will try her best to hide it or hold it so she doesn’t bother others with it. When she’s sad, she will be much quieter and mope more.

28. What is their biggest fear? What in general scares them? How do they act when they’re scared?

- She has a lot of fears; death, falling from heights, rats to name a few. After the Fall, she seems to be afraid of more things than usual. When she’s scared, she’ll tend to freeze or tense up, her breath will quicken, and she’ll try to get away from what’s causing her fear. She’ll also talk a lot and very fast, and depending on its proximity to her, she may squeal or shout.

29. What do they do when they find out someone else’s fear? Do they tease them? Or get very over protective?

- If she finds out someone else’s fear, she will do her best to keep it away from them or not cause it. She will be over protective of them if someone tries to use it against them or tease them about it.

30. Do they exercise? Regularly? Or only when forced? What do they act like pre-workout and post-workout?

- Before the Fall, her exercise was regular with her weapons training. After the Fall, her exercise has turned into a lot of cardio from running and strength from fighting. Gladio will help her with her exercise sometimes. Pre-workout tends to be her regular self; post-workout, though, she will be tired and not nearly the same as usual.

31. Do they drink? What are they like drunk? What are they like hungover? How do they act when other people are drunk or hungover? Kind or teasing?

- She does drink, more than she did before the Fall, which was only on special occasions. When she’s drunk is much more outgoing and fun, talking easily and without trouble but definitely concentrating when she tries to walk. She hasn’t ever had a hangover, amazingly. If people she doesn’t know are drunk around her, she’ll be extremely uncomfortable, but if it’s those she trusts, she’ll be a mix of kind and teasing.if they’re hung over, she’ll be much kinder.

32. What do they dress like? What sort of shops do they buy clothes from? Do they wear the fashion that they like? What do they wear to sleep? Do they wear makeup? What’s their hair like?

- Kylia dresses in all sorts of things, from ballgowns to sweats. If she buys any clothes, she’ll get them from all sorts of stores from low to high-end. She’s always worn whatever fashion she wanted, considering it’s appropriate for where she’s going and the occasion. When she sleeps she will wear shorts and a camisole in the summer, and in the winter she will wear fleecy pajama pants and some sort of thermal shirt with fuzzy socks. Before the Fall, she would wear more makeup than she does after the fall, which is now just mascara, tinted moisturizer, minimal eyebrows, the slightest bit of blush, and a tinted lip balm. Her hair before the Fall was always exquisitely done in some sort of hairstyle, but now it’ll either be just brushed and down, or in a low maintenance ponytail or braid.

33. What underwear do they wear? Boxers or briefs? Lacey? Comfy granny panties?

- Kylia has sorts of underwear (none of the male kind). On a regular basis, she’ll wear cotton cheeky or hipster panties with a bit of lace on the edges, and if she’s trying to impress someone (😏) they’ll be lacy all over and possibly a thong. However, if she’s on her menstrual cycle, it’s granny panties all they way.

34. What is their body type? How tall are they? Do they like their body?

- Kylia is 5'7" with thin build. She really doesn’t have any kind of opinion on her body, but at times when her mental health takes a dive she won’t be the most comfortable with it.

35. What’s their guilty pleasure? What is their totally unguilty pleasure?

- Guilty pleasures: Self pleasure 😏👀 (she tries not to indulge too much), certain songs, daydreaming of the past and what could have been Unguilty pleasures: Too many to list.

36. What are they good at? What hobbies do they like? Can they sing?

- Kylia has many hobbies she enjoys when she can do them, which includes, dancing, singing, drawing, playing video games (with or without Noctis), and sewing. She can sing very well, and anyone who has heard her hasn’t been disappointed. During their relationship, Nyx would have her sing quietly to him sometimes during their rendezvous’.

37. Do they like to read? Are they a fast or slow reader? Do they like poetry? Fictional or nonfiction?

- She does like to read, and she’s a rather fast reader. She does like poetry and fictional novels, with an occasional nonfiction here and there.

38. What do they admire in others? What talents do they wish they had?

- She wishes she could do a lot of different things, most notably garden and drive. She admires others ability to motivate themselves in a snap; she needs to work up to that motivation a little.

39. Do they like letters? Or prefer emails/messaging?

- She does like letters; she thinks it’s much more personal being able to see the senders handwriting. While she likes messaging, she hates emails.

40. Do they like energy drinks? Coffee? Sugary foods? Or can they naturally stay awake and alert?

- Kylia doesn’t really like energy drinks, but she does like sugary foods and has been gradually been warming up to coffee (thanks to a certain advisor). However she can stay awake and alert most of the time without those things.

41. What’s their sexuality? What do they find attractive? Physically and mentally? What do they like/need in a relationship?

- She considers herself to be straight (although the slightest bit curious) and polyamorous. Physically, there’s not too much, but she does like a tall stature, toned muscles, a 👌 voice, and an overall nice face. Mentally, she likes if they are stable, just as (if not a little more) intelligent than she is, well-read, and mature (though still with some childlike attributes). She wants to be able to laugh and have fun with her partner, to be able to lean on and rely on them if she’s struggling, to feel secure and loved by them always, and they have to see eye to eye with her on certain political and other topics.

42. What are their goals? What would they sacrifice anything for? What is their secret ambition?

- Her main goal is to live the happiest life she can, and whatever that entails. She would sacrifice anything for those she loved to be safe and happy. Her not-so-secret ambition is to save and restore Lucis.

- She has an odd relationship with religion. While she does pray to the Astrals, she doesn’t live her life by the “religion”. She doesn’t mind religion, as long as people don’t let it consume their lives and force it on others. She doesn’t have any certain opinions on people who are and aren’t religious.

44. What is their favourite season? Type of weather? Are they good in the cold or the heat? What weather do they complain in the most?

- Kylia loves the fall the most, hands down. She loves every single aspect of it. She loves either cool rainy days or when the sun is out but the air is crisp and cool. She’s much better in the cold than she is in the heat, which is why she is insufferable in the late spring and summer.

45. How do other people see them? Is it similar to how they see themselves?

- Considering she is a public figure, there are people who see her one way or another, but overall the people of Lucis adore her. There is just a select few who actively try to take her out (garbage jesus). In a way, it is both similar and not to the way she sees herself.

46. Do they make a good first impression? Does their first impression reflect them accurately? How do they introduce themselves?

- Kylia does her best to make a good first impression, especially as she is a royal. Her first impression always reflects herself accurately. She will tend to introduce herself with a smile; any other interactions depend on the person.

47. How do they act in a formal occasion? What do they think of black tie wear? Do they enjoy fancy parties and love to chit chat or loathe the whole event?

- Kylia acts with the utmost etiquette of a princess as she has been groomed to throughout her whole life. She doesn’t mind black tie wear at all; she absolutely loves getting dressed to the nines and wearing gorgeous gowns. As for how she enjoys the event, it depends. If her depression or anxiety flare up, she struggles to get through it, but if they don’t, she will be just fine and enjoy the occasion.

48. Do they enjoy any parties? If so, what kind? Do they organize the party or just turn up? How do they act? What if they didn’t want to go but were dragged Long by a friend?

- It’s hard to say, seeing as she’s never been to that kind of party. But hypothetically, she would probably just show up, maybe organize on occasion. She would most likely mingle with her closest friends and occasionally mingle with new faces. If she were dragged along, she would stay with that friend most of the time or leave.

49. What is their most valued object? Are they sentimental? Is there something they have to take everywhere with them?

- Kylia has one thing she treasures the most: a music box with a beautiful glass unicorn inside that has gold accents. It was given to her by her mother, and she loves it more than any other thing. She can be very sentimental with her things. One thing that’s always on her is a beautiful pendant necklace her father gave her for her 16th birthday. Other than that, it would be her phone.

50. If they could only take one bag of stuff somewhere with them, what would they pack? What do they consider their essentials?

- She would take the essentials to live: clothes, shoes, toiletries, hair brush, feminine products, medical supplies. She would take her phone charger, a blanket and small pillow, and a few sentimental things for her to feel a little more at home.

What do you think of the Kanker's presence in Jingle Jingle Jangle? How is it different from their other appearances?

OKAY I FINALLY DID IT! Step right up and see analysis of the Kankers’ parts of Jingle Jingle Jangle! Only 3 or 4 weeks late!

First of all, in case I never analyze this special in full, I want to call out that this whole way of connecting the Eds’ A Plot to the Kankers’ B Plot is complete nonsense.... randomly discarded and forgotten flashlight + conveniently placed mirror = reflection of light pointed at the sky = Star of Bethlehem that uses Godlight to deliver sexual harassment to the main characters??? It is a purely visual idea, and what’s worse it seemingly has no meaning.... is it punishment for wasting a battery?? Then what was the point of the special’s other Chekhov’s lightbulb!?

Was that just a spiritual redemption, but not an escape from his punishment?

Is it punishment for breaking his parents’ trust?

Is it just to say the Kankers’ lives are sadder and this universe’s god prioritizes them above the Eds or anyone else?

Or is the Snow itself an entity, like the Static? Both are terms to refer to television fuzz….

Is Evil Tim in control of the holidays, with all the magical Santas and Elves and Monsters that get to appear in these episodes???

The Snow is even the first thing to appear, in detailed close-up for one time, before the rest of the universe fades into existence, ushering Plank (and Jonny) into the digital era before the Eds OR the Kankers get to appear at all, and scenes where the snow is coming down are markedly more abstract and focused on the characters being quiet and internalizing their emotions.

Is supernature itself overwhelming the characters at will and leading them to cruel fates!?

Is the supersnow meant as a warning of the literal and figurative after-effects bound to invade any show switching to digital!?

SOMEBODY STOP ME!

The snow even just fades out when Eddy’s light starts glowing.

I’m sorry to begin with a whole silly rant. It’s just that Christmas specials are normally the one episode of any show that can be counted on to let the main characters have a win. The show was set to end with its stagnant nihilistic 4th season, so it was a miracle to get the holiday specials or digital era at all... So this Kanker ending stung more than usual.

That said, this special has won me over as an adult! The series’ first foray into digital animation looks really gorgeous and it’s such a visually driven special, you can’t look away. The animation is unfortunately a little better than the digital era could make consistent, but it’s close enough to feel like the same show as everything that came before and after it. Definitely some of the most experimental style choices the show ever made. I’m always so glad the backgrounds are still hand-painted throughout Jingle Jingle Jangle.

I’m fascinated by the way this star is clearly a digital effect, but at the same time it avoids being too high quality for EEnE by mostly looking like a dry brush (like when they do those paint-blurs when the characters move fast), and animating the star as white outlines with no color inside when they could easily do a real light effect is an interesting choice. It captures the eery prettiness the star’s role demands without betraying the show’s sketchiness.

I really like the music direction this whole special, but this opening to the Kankers’ Christmas is one of my favorite parts. It is about a minute long and starts 2 and a half minutes into the special.

As we start hearing dialogue from Lee, the camera whips down to the trailer park and the Kankers’ theme music drums in. This is the one time the show really made me aware the Kankers have a theme so now I always keep an ear out for that music cue. I know it fills most of their appearances in Big Picture Show.

Inside, the Kankers sit and squabble as always, playing with a box of Krazy Krackers. Apparently Christmas Crackers are a more popular thing in the UK (the show had a lot of UK influence around this time, with Rachel Connor joining as head writer in the next season), but I think it’s been confirmed to be a Canadian thing too now.

Room analysis! The Kankers seem to have to make do when it comes to decorations… They have lights on the staircase and around the windows, and a cute wreathe with a red light on top of their TV, but their tree is a lone stick that has 7 branches if it’s lucky, it’s plugged into the wall yet the one light on it isn’t working, and most of the ornaments seem to be recyclables, barbed wire, or orbs that have fallen from the tree. Oven mitts have been hung from the wall in place of stockings and rather than garland, they’ve trimmed their living room with chains, fishing lures and… are those shower curtain lines?

This is probably the most the show really gets across how big of an economic difference there is between the cul-de-sac and the trailer park. The kids, even Ed and Eddy (unfortunately we see little of Edd’s family’s Christmas traditions), seem to have very gaudy and extravagant decorations, most of them appear to be expecting family or coworker Christmas parties later in the evening. The Kankers’ trailer is sparse by comparison.

Marie being the least cheery at Christmas is probably the most punk thing about her..

Focusing Kanker scenes on May is pretty typical of this point in the series, but I like how infallibly nice May is in this one. Marie tries to blow the Christmas cracker up in May’s face, and yet May barely reacts to the threat level here as anything out of the ordinary. Then again, this scene likely exaggerates how much these things are like firecrackers.

May calls the cracker a dud, so of course Lee razzes her, “just like you, huh, May?” This moment has a good undertone of Lee trying to readjust Marie’s negativity to more of a light ribbing, to fit the season.

REALLY COOL DIGITAL DRYBRUSH EXPLOSION EFFECTS…

What’s the deal with this eyepatch on Marie though? Is this just a “under the bangs” teaser gag like the one frame three-eyed Lee in BPS? The artists don’t try nearly as hard to hide Marie’s full face as they do Lee’s…. Is it just an unexplained one-episode injury like Jimmy’s?

so glad even the digital X-mas special gets inverted frames, one of the most interesting visual features of the series’ early episodes

This opening scene to their plot starts the Kankers off as unusually innocent and naive, seemingly motivated only by an attraction to light, like moths. Lee even has to ask “where is it?” to which Marie correctly points out that May already said the star was in the sky.

To be fair, Lee’s hair was blocking her eye, and we finally get to see her eye for the first time since season 1!

I LOVE this little detail of Lee twirling her foot before skipping out of frame.

Marie rises, embarrassed to have been choked and dropped so carelessly.

She tries to save face by telling May to come on.

May’s Christmas cheer will not be defeated!

She teases Marie by giving Marie the same “come on” command.

Iconic!! Doesn’t this shot kinda make you think of the night scenes in Disney’s Aladdin?

10 minutes later, we get another minute of Kanker B-plot. I don’t think any other episode ever gets this close to the super-geometric outline-eradicating Samurai-Jack-esque style Rod Filbrandt uses in concept art for his backgrounds..

Such background porn… I’m really unsettled by the weird abandoned signs of life this God Light takes the Kankers to… It’s like a trail of death leading to the Eds’ bad ending and the Kankers are too desensitized to pick up on that.

Lee gives her sisters a quick glance as they approach.

Lee and May unintentionally shut Marie out and she steps around.

Also, I’ll give them points for the “gold, frankincense and myrrh” = “mold, franks and cents, and fur” rhyme gag, but only because I wasn’t aware of that part of the nativity scene until this special aired. I was 13 when this came out, which means I’d already done like 8 grades of Catholic school, how did they fail to make any impression on me!? But honestly, that’s a weird punchline to try and use as a button on this bit. And as much as I love the art in that montage, it seems like it would’ve worked even better as a mood-setting detail if they found each gift separately between each house Eddy visited.

I love when they all look up in unison.

They look more confused as they walk away.

I’m really interested in how extra moody Marie seems in this montage. I also noticed that their frostbitten walk through the snow seems to be slightly foreshadowing of the walk Eddy goes on in the climax.

This is a really iconic shot and camera direction for me too, and it’s the one appearance of the junkyard at night in the whole show (as a setting, there’s at least one episode that shows it from overhead at night). It’s also one of like 3 uses of the junkyard as a setting in the digital era. And here you can barely even recognize it under the snow. Still looks great, though!

They are SO introspective over this star… what are they contemplating? Should we retroactively assume they’re regretting their situations with the Eds post-Fistful, or accept that this special wasn’t made in chronological order and think of something less specific, like family troubles or… just not thinking anything particular at all???

Wait… …Are you kidding me? I just noticed that May and Marie are each wearing one half of the same pair of gloves and the same pair of mittens….

Oooh look at this goregous postcard-ready background of the construction site! The construction site only has one other night scene I can think of that isn’t just an overhead shot, and it’s only one shot of Ed running there to grab a cement mixer during his fight with Nazz in Boo Haw Haw.

I really love how these gradient-silhouettes with blobby purple outlines look. Their progression through the show’s locations reminds me of the EEnE video games (mainly Jawbreakers! for the GBA because that was the only game they had at this time)… I think they also used this silhouette style for the kids on the Scam of the Century DS game cover.

I love wondering whose coat this is and why it’s been left here… Also, do the rust and torn seat imply this construction site is officially abandoned? Or is this one of only a few vehicles that got left behind right before Christmas break and is now being ravaged by the elements?

This frame always makes me yearn for a future where Lee is a construction worker. Or demolition!!!

We then cut one street over to Eddy in Plot A, where it isn’t snowing, reinforcing the idea that the Kanker’s story is not chronologically synced up to Eddy’s story.

Anyway, another 10 minutes later, we get a final Kanker scene!

The Snow is strong enough to smack Eddy with a door (UNINTENTIONAL BRO FORESHADOWING?). Eddy is also not very good at boarding a door, apparently.

On a scale of 1-10, how blasphemous is this shot?

How serious is that question, Edd.... why would there be three real-ass monarchs in Rolf’s shed in the middle of an American blizzard???

I feel real weird about Edd being so religious in this episode, it’s too soon after season 4 made such a point of Edd not believing in things that cannot be proven…

I like that the special is religious. As agnostic as Catholic school made me, Christmas specials that get sentimental about the Christian traditions get the most nostalgia out of me. But this special and series clearly revels in sin and hopelessness, so I found it kind of jarring how much of this special lets the Bible references be played straight. Making Edd super religious just so he can continue to be fanserviced as an angel felt a little cheap, and I feel like it creates an undertone that Eddy is being punished for not being as religious as the others around him.

But take my complaints there with a grain of salt, it’s impossible to understand X-mas Special Logic, where it’s not quite Christianity, just some sort of TV-safe offshoot with elves and magic and a generally more fantastical mythology.

I do really like this shot… Nice to see Rolf’s animals get a Christmas cameo.

I do entertain the idea that the Kankers really think these gifts will warm the Eds’ hearts and earn their admiration. But we all know this will be a short lived moment.

And now that there’s been a beat of peace, the Kankers reveal their true intention of pressuring the Eds into gifting them some kisses. The way they trap them in the shed and suggest it’ll last a whole year is really one of the creepiest approaches to a Kanker ending in the whole show. Obviously it’s not likely it would really last that long, and imo if it’s just kisses it’s not really new or surprising... but it’s still a pretty damn meanspirited ending for a beautifully-crafted holiday special that very easily could have been scrapped by the show’s season 4 cancellation.

I do love the fur coat being draped over the cow’s face, though.

And it is honestly important to know the Eds can still do well drawn group scream takes in digital.

May and Ed scaring the animals is a nice touch, but I hate how we hear May going “oink” during this walla.

It’s mostly neat and tidy, but I guess nobody could blame me for occasionally throwing clothes to the floor after a hard day’s work. My bedding usually is dark colored with simplistic patterns; the bed is black and out of metal. It’s not the most comfy thing for Netflix and chill, but for everything else it does the job. My wardrobe consists of mirrored glass. On the sides of the bed I have a couple of metal and leather accessories displayed with dim lightning. You know what I’m talking about.

Do they have any daily rituals?

The most ritual thing is that in the morning I brush my teeth after using the toilet. I’m not a breakfast person and rather grab my coffee on my way to my jobs, and one more on the way back home in the evenings. Yes, I guess you could call coffee my most routine thing. I couldn’t exist without it.

Do they exercise, and if so, what do they do? How often?

Back in school I used to play basketball with the local team. However, that quickly died down after graduation and I have to admit that I slacked for a while when it comes to sport. When I moved from Japan to America a couple of years ago, I detested the chubby belly I had back then so much that I started to work out more and more. Currently, I try to hit the gym three times a week if my schedule allows. I came to like my body again, and I think this reflects in my ego.

What would they do if they needed to make dinner but the kitchen was busy?

Now that’s an easy one. It’s my kitchen, so if my guest is busy there, I damn well hope that he’s thinking of me. Else, I will gladly skip cooking to have a hard taste of another kind of meal. And yes, that sometimes definitely belongs into the kitchen as well.

Cleanliness habits (personal, workspace, etc.)

When it comes to work and my camera equipment, I need to keep it tidy, clean and sorted with regular inspections. I don’t understand when people joke about me taking extra good care of the things I make a living with.My apartment usually is rather tidy, but not clinically. It looks like someone lives there while I still don’t have to be afraid of spontanuously having guests over. The only thing at home I can think of that’s always a mess, no matter how often I rearrange it, is my underwear and socks drawer. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong, but it always seems like someone tried to rob me and left a chaotic mess.

Eating habits and sample daily menu

As I said before, I’m not a breakfast type of person. My only proper meal per day I have in the evenings. If I’m cooking dinner myself, I watch out to prepare enough to take it with me to work on the following day. However, if i just end up throwing some frozen things into the oven after a particularly busy day, I’m forced to eat out on the following day. That’s usually not what I like to do because it costs money, but starving isn’t an option either. Sample menu… If I am cooking, it’s usually some combination of rice and meat with different vegetables. If I’m feeling extra fancy, I even prepare a soup or salad to have with the main dish. My cooking skills aren’t exactly incredibly, but I can manage.

Favorite way to waste time and feelings surrounding wasting time

Should I be absolutely honest? Jerking off. Really. Time passes so quickly, it feels amazing and you can do whatever you have to do happy and refreshed. Apart from that, my new favorite way to waste my time (which in fact goes hand in hand with the first thing I mentioned) is texting/sexting a guy I recently met. Don’t blame me, but I can’t stop myself from messaging him or texting him back fast. Sounds cliché, but I assure you that it’s not what you think it is. Also, Netflix and chill.As I’m not home all that much, I don’t feel like having nothing in particular to do is a waste of time. It’s rather some sort of calming down after the day to get ready for the next one. Free days are a blessing as well.

Favorite indulgence and feelings surrounding indulging

Ah, it’s nasty to ask me something like that. My daily dose of super expensive coffee could definitely count as an indulgence, but I don’t even feel bad about spending so much money and tips on it. Hm, what else? When it comes to material things, I indulge in the luxury of leather and chains, of course only the best looking and quality things. For work, camera equipment of course. I don’t always need the newest stuff, but sometimes I simply want it, put together a bit of my savings and give in and buy it. Great photos are a pleasure to look at after all, so why not spend money on it.

Makeup?

Ah, just the basic things like concealer, color correctors, brow gel and lip balm.

Neuroses? Do they recognize them as such?

Does territorial behavior towards your partner count? Probably not. In that case, I don’t suffer from anything like that.

Intellectual pursuits?

While my job definitely isn’t a very intellectual one, I for sure like to play the part. The more capable you look, the better jobs you are offered. I can’t say I pursue a very intellectual career because I love what I am currently doing and if possible would love to do it until death. But, one of these days I’d like to speak proper English without my still lingering Japanese accent.

Favorite book genre?

Easy one, science fiction! The more classic aliens, the better. Don’t you love to explore different peoples’ insights about what they think the universe might have to offer? I always get so excited when they shed some light on something new. Even though it’s just a work of art, maybe it holds a fair amount of truth. Wow, I get excited just talking about this!

Sexual Orientation? And, regardless of own orientation, thoughts on sexual orientation in general?

Each their own. I know people of the most different orientations and everyone is a human like the other. I myself am attracted to any kind of gender, probably because I am more attracted to kinky personalities than gender. I have had both girlfriends and boyfriends in the past and can’t say I have a preference. If it clicks it clicks. Can I just say that my preference is ‘often’?

Physical abnormalities? (Both visible and not, including injuries/disabilities, long-term illnesses, food-intolerances, etc.)

I have a think scar on the backside of my left shoulder, and as awful as it may sound, I got it because an ex girlfriend dug her nail too deep. When it comes to food, I have to admit that anything containing sesame can end me up in the hospital. Seeds, oils, anything. Can you believe how awful it was to grow up in Japan without being able to eat anything containing these small bastards? I once indeed ended up in the hospital because I wasn’t aware that a dish was served in a sauce made of seasme oil, so my throat swelled so much that it was hard to breathe and I had incredible pain in the stomach. Ugh. Awful memories.

Biggest and smallest short term goal?

I wanna lay the guy I got to know recently. When it comes to small short term goals, that’s probably making the best edits out of the weddings I shooted lately. The people who hired me have rank and name in society, so them spreading the word about my work would be so amazing.

Biggest and smallest long term goal?

Instead of just freelancing my way through life, I would love to have my own photo studio some day. Not for the common things like family portraits though, but I dream of shooting celebrities within my own walls. That could be considered my biggest long term goal. When it comes to smaller wishes, I’d love to have more cats some day. Call me crazy cat guy, but the purr of a cat can be so calming. And, they are fun to watch.

Preferred mode of dress and rituals surrounding dress

Actually, I like to keep it casual. Jeans, shirt, boots, a couple of bracelets and a necklace and I’m good to go. Rather often lately, work forces me to dress up in suit and tie. I can’t say that I hate it, but it’s not really comfortable. However, I realize that dressing up like that has a certain impact on people, which I really love to witness. So maybe, just maybe, I will use this style of clothing more often in the future, at least for more special situations.

Favorite beverage?

I usually drink a lot of water. Soft drinks can stay away from me. What I need though is a lot of coffee, that’s like my guilty pleasure. When it comes to alcohol, beer of course, but only at home. When eating out with someone, a glass of wine is a must have, and when I’m out with friends and we go to the clubs, I prefer to drink it not mixed at all. What’s better than a glass of whiskey? It’s classy, it’s tasty.

What do they think about before falling asleep at night?

I tend to not think about a lot when trying to fall asleep. Mostly it’s just things that happened throughout the day that made me happy. Usually, when I fall asleep with happy thoughts I have a good and relaxing sleep and can get out of bed much easier in the morning.

Childhood illnesses? Any interesting stories behind them?

As a kid, I had high fever a couple of times that made me blank out completely. I only know from people telling me, but my parents must have been worried to death. Nobody had explanations and so the doctors were just glad when eventually it occured less and less until I only get a fever once in one or two years now. Up to this day, we don’t know what caused it.

Turn-ons? Turn-offs?

My biggest turn on are partners who can challenge me in bed without simply doing as instructed. When that’s a given, anything from latex to leather to chains, handcuffs, chokers, ropes…. All of that used properly gets me so hot. I need a partner to fight with about who all of that will be used on in the end. On the contrary, I do have a thing for sensuality as well, if it’s not a boring overload of it.What I can’t stand are crybabies who act all so tough and in the end can’t cope with someone manhandling them. Also, anything that includes piss and feces is a no go. Oh. And when someone spits instead of swallowing, they can leave right away. I will never get a hard on for them again.

Given a blank piece of paper, a pencil, and nothing to do, what would happen?

What kind of question is that? I will make a paper plane out of it and use the pencil to draw little aliens as passengers!

How organized are they? How does this organization/disorganization manifest in their everyday life?

When it comes to work, I am very organized. I keep track of every job with every little detail in my phone and always have business cards with me. In private life, things look a bit different. Because I always have to pay so much attention to all the details for my jobs that the rest of my life suffers a bit when it comes to organization. I forget birthdays and forget when I made plans with friends. It’s awful.

Is there one subject of study that they excel at? Or do they even care about intellectual pursuits at all?

I think I answered something like that above already? Correct me if I’m mistaken.

How do they see themselves 5 years from today?

Ideally, I will finally have found a long term partner by then who helps me to paint my freshly acquired photo studio! Both of that together would be a dream come true, and it’s not completely unrealistic.In 5 years from now, I probably still will not have kids, and probably Nexy will not be with me anymore by then. It makes me sad to think about it, but most likely one or two other cats will have taken her place.

Do they have any plans for the future? Any contingency plans if things don’t workout?

My only plan is to make career with photography and become a known and often booked photographer for giant events and celebrity shootings. If that doesn’t work out, I honestly don’t know what I will do. I have focused my entire life on making career with that, so if for some reason I wouldn’t be able to take photos anymore, I would have nothing left as a backup plan.

What is their biggest regret?

I should have stayed in touch with the guys I was in a band with for fun during high school and college. I shouldn’t have done that one mistake that got me into jail and made them walk away from me. I was too scared and ashamed to try to stay in touch with them, and they never reached out to me either. If I could turn back time, i would handle everything differently.

Who do they see as their best friend? Their worst enemy?

My best friend is a guy called Shion. He stayed back in Japan when I moved to the states, but we still write each other very often, make phone calls whenever time zone difference allows is and keep each other up to date. I have a couple of friends here in San Francisco as well, but none of them would I trust with my life.

Reaction to sudden extrapersonal disaster (eg The house is on fire! What do they do?)

Call the police, call the fire department, whatever is necessary. I save what I can save and make my way out of it. Top things to be saved would probably be my camera equipment, my phone, my macbook. Without these items I would be lost. If everything is lost to the fire, earthquake, whatever it is, I would have no choice but to go to either friends or my family. Neither would be a great choice because I would undoubtedly be a bother in their daily lives.

Reaction to sudden intrapersonal disaster (eg close family member suddenly dies)

This would be the worst. I can’t cope well with loss and death, and losing someone close to me or just seeing them in a coma, I don’t know what I would do. Probably break down at first before trying to do all in my might to make it unhappen. I know, it’s stupid and senseless, but I am not a man who accepts that nature so easily defeats him.

Most prized possession?

The virginity of the guy who always as a bitch to me in high school.

Thoughts on material possessions in general?

I like material possessions. Some people would disagree and call me materialistic, but for me it’s important to have something to spend a bit of my money on because it simply makes me happy. No other reason. I also love to buy small things for the people who are important to me; jewelry for example if I know they will like it.

Thoughts on privacy? (Are they a private person, or are they prone to ‘TMI’?)

While privacy is important to me, I don’t overdo it. I love to tease others with giving them insights into my privacy. For example, when I am over at a sexy person’s place and take a shower, i tend to leave the door a bit open so that they can see whatever they want to see. I have nothing to hide when it comes to my body.For me, I am alone too often lately. It doesn’t do me well and I urgently need to change that again. I rather have people invade my privacy than have too much privacy.When it comes to others, I expect their wishes, unless I know them well enough to be able to tell when it’s okay to sneak into their privacy.

What activities do they enjoy, but consider to be a waste of time?

Honestly? Napping. I can’t stop laughing now that I think about it. Sometimes I just lie down, fall asleep because that’s what I want in this very moment, and when I wake up I blame myself for having wasted so much time. It’s an awful discrepancy.

What makes them feel guilty?

Not paying the proper amount of attention to the people who deserve it most. I tend to get lost in my own thoughts and needs so that I don’t see the little things, or don’t listen to the little details, or don’t read between the lines. I hate when i don’t catch something properly. That even makes me apologize as soon as I know I missed something, because it’s their right to blame me for it. I can’t fulfill their needs if I am too distracted to know of them.

Are they more analytical or more emotional in their decision-making?

A mix of both. Being emotional makes me act analytically. Does that make sense? When something bothers me emotionally, I tend to calculate ways to change it. I form complex plans to get to perfect emotional health.

What recharges them when they’re feeling drained?

There’s one particular thing which I’m not very proud of saying. When I’m really done with everything, the thing that really recharges me emotionally and physically is great, rough sex, and just lying in each others arms whispering equally kinky and loving shit to each other. Feeling needed and loved like that, there’s nothing better to be able to function properly again.

Would you say that they have a superiority-complex? Inferiority-complex? Neither?

Neither. I am not feeling particularly superior or inferior about anything. Now that I think about it, that’s not quite correct, in fact. I do feel superior in bed with most of my partners, which is a bit sad, actually. It should be equal power. But inferior? No, there’s nothing I can think of, currently.

How misanthropic are they?

I don’t consider myself that misanthropic. Sure, there are always people who annoy me, but isn’t that normal? That doesn’t make me hat humanity. There are always very great exceptions that make me love humans in general, because that means people like these exist.

Hobbies?

There’s not a fair lot, to be honest. My job is my hobby at the same time, and I couldn’t wish for it to be any other way. I guess you can say going to the gym and taking care of my body is a hobby as well. But currently, nothing beats texting/ sexting that guy I met. It’s my top activity apart from work.

How far did they get in formal education? What are their views on formal education vs self-education?

I finished High School and College, not with very great success, but I did. I was simply too lazy. Right now, I definitely do prefer self education because you can choose the topics yourself. Had school offered thing I was even remotely interested in, like galaxies, life outside of earth, I would have been better as well. But in general, a healthy mix of both is probably the best, but I can’t blame anyone for not bringing up the energy to educate themselves while still in school.

Religion?

I respect religious people, but I’m not religious myself. With the things I did, the things I do, I would long have been cast into hell. That didn’t happen, so personally I doubt a God exists. I was raised in a very strange mix of buddhism and christianity, but in the end I adapted neither.

Superstitions or views on the occult?

That on the other hand is amazing. I love the theories and everything about black magic and I would not say no if someone said “Hey, let’s try this.” I’m just too curious to see if there really is something you can do by mere rituals and words. But for now, I absolutely do not doubt it at all.Ah, what I really don’t have a thing for are people who have a crystal ball in front of them and claim to read your past and future. I don’t see any real theory behind how that would be supposed to work.

Do they express their thoughts through words or deeds?

Deeds. I am okay with words and know how to use them for my advantages, but actually doing something instead of just talking, that’s a different level for me. It influences people more than mere words. A lot of people know how to talk smoothly, but in the end that’s all they can do. So I rather focus on the deeds right from the start.

If they were to fall in love, who (or what) is their ideal?

Ah, I think I talked a lot about that already. But let’s talk about my ideal partner for a moment. They would need to look great and attractive - yes, I am superficial - and be a kinky little bastard who can be a challenge for me. I fall for someone who is intelligent, smooth and fun and not shy to break some rules every now and then. Still, we need to be able to have serious conversations and to the common couple activities like going to the movies and visiting friends. Obviously, they like my friends and my friends like them. We do a lot together, eventually move in together, and they don’t blame me for not being the best cook, rather laugh it off and in the end we try to figure it out together. Also, it’s important that they let me ramble about outer space things as much as I like and not tell it off as stupid.

How do they express love?

Kisses in public, holdings hands, subtle touches of their neck and waist. I buy them jewelry, flowers, whatever they like. I go the extra mile to organize surprise birthday parties, take them to the coast at night and hold their hips from behind after we woke up early to watch the sunrise. I wish them a nice day, kiss them goodbye, kiss them hello in the evening.I don’t say the three words easily, but when I do, I mean it. So rather, I show them my love instead of speaking about it. Preferably, the harder I spank them, the more I love them.

If this person were to get into a fist fight, what is their fighting style like?

Very straightforward, at least that’s the way it always has been when I got into fights. I don’t think much, because during that time I would get ko’ed. So rather, I just punch whatever is in my way, and hope that this will get me further and make me the winner of the fight. Sounds stupid, probably is stupid.

Is this person afraid of dying? Why or why not?

I am not really afraid of death itself. I am rather afraid of not having lived my life to the fullest. I am scared of leaving a loved one behind, and I would forever blame myself to leave them alone in this cruel world when I can no longer be there to take care of them. Nobody knows what comes after death, and I hate to worry others or to see them suffer for something that’s not their fault.

I sent a pdf file of my portfolio to Rachel Goodyear and some questions which might help me with my work. she has been extremely busy with her own work but it has been a honour for her to have her time and look through my work.

My questions for Rachel Goodyear

What things do you like about my work ?

Very open, sensitive and joyful. I like the drawing style, the use of marks and the colours give them a great energy.

What things can i improve within my work?

What formats are these usually displayed in offline? Would love to see what you could do with prints, installation, projection and zines.

Is there any artists or subject matter which i should look into ?

You have found a way of working that is consistent with every piece of work you do.

Yes - but this has been a long-term process. If I want to introduce any new techniques into my work I think long-term and introduce things gradually rather than suddenly changing things so you can see a coherent flow/ it doesn’t look random.

Have you ever been asked to create a piece of work for a client to their liking rather than the way you work?

I have been approached to do this but generally turn this down. I am in the area of fine art so my way of working is create an original in the context of my ongoing practice and then this is sold to private collector or gallery collection. This is done through a gallerist (agent), so there is an understanding that a client will get in touch with them based on my previous works and style. On occasion when I have been approached for commission it is thoroughly discussed before I commit. I am happy to try new approaches with my work for a commission - especially if it a collaboration - but there always has to be a coherency in how it fits with the rest of my practice.

How have you over come this or worked around this?

Has this ever happened to you? If not, what advice could you give?

I think a level of flexibility can be good, but if someone asks you to do something that is nothing like you’re own work, my first question to them would be ‘why’. An example of my own: I was asked to make a drawing for a book cover, but the publisher wanted something very specific in the style of another artist. I asked why they had asked me. The answer was that they knew me and knew I could draw. I politely told them that I had my own style and way of working and it was very important for me to keep my own recognisable style. I also explained that as a fine-artist I created works that were part of my ongoing explorations, style and creative language - I don’t illustrate to others’ ideas - I am trained as a fine artist, so an illustrator would be much more appropriate for that kind of job. What I did do, though, was presented some works I had already made that I felt fit with the atmosphere of the stories and agreed a fee should they want to use one of the images. They did, and the author went on to request artworks for the covers of two more publications.

I am very influence by lot of work to do with expression with the way people use colour, marking and work which deal with identity like for drag queens and super heroes, constantly portraying peoples gender or a persona in a creative way, what things do you get influenced by which connects with your work?

I find influences and inspiration in a number of different places. At present I have been looking a lot a women surrealist artists who were largely overlooked in their time due to the dominance of male artists at that time. Artists such as Dorothea Tanning and Leonora Carrington. I am also a huge fan of artists Louise Bourgeois and Marlene Dumas. I find a lot of inspiration from books too - The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman a particular favourite and a lot of interest in psychoanalysis and the subconscious.

Sometimes i struggle a lot trying to get out a art block and it drive me insane to get out of that negative zone, do you have those days where you look a paper for hours upon hours and nothing happens? if you have do you have any tips to get yourself out of the block .

Yes! Very often! It can be quite frustrating and demoralising at times but I have learned little tricks along the way that help me work myself out of a rut. Sometimes it can be very simple like going for a walk around the block! Otherwise I will begin to draw something purely as a drawing exercise. This might be simply drawing a still life (I keep interesting bits and bobs round the studio specifically for this), or I will draw my left hand, or do a face study from a photograph or in the mirror. Blocks are particularly bad when you are trying to force ideas to come - by doing studies that do not have the pressure to be anything other than an exercise can rest the mind a little and allow more creative thoughts to flow. If I am in a really bad rut, then I dedicate time to reading and looking at other artists. Best thing I have found, though, if I have a block is to still go to the studio and if I really can’t draw that day then I read or put on an art documentary.

I love using a different types of media to create expressive marks like for example I like using a Pocsa brush pen because It can give you some much motion and you can control the conscience of the line / marks, what types of media / tools or programs you like to use?

Are there any media, tools and programs which i should invest on getting to help me in the future?

I’m very analogue in the way I work! I am mostly working with pencils, watercolours, inks. I like the pencil for intricate detail and control, and then mix it up a bit with loose washes in watercolour or ink. When I am making animations, the intervention of any digital programme is kept to a minimum - I make hand-drawn frames, scan them into the computer and then stitch them together into sequence in a programme such as Premier Elements. The best programme I have found for animation is After Effects, though it is a programme I don’t personally use - I have had help from others in the past to do the digital side of the animations. The way I make animations is more like a collage.
