so like for fun i was thinking about my unsorted OCs like my various standalone OCs who dont have a clear story with a cast of multiple characters and I was like MAYBE i should try pressing several together like theyre dolls and see what happens and sticking Siren and the honkfather together has been making me laugh

fucking BITING the bars of my cage about out of context depressing oc lore
under a cut bc 1) it got longer than expected and 2) the overarching content warning for death and suicide [not graphic, not centered on the main character, but definitely present]
also, poorly formatted footnotes
ok so the ocs im writing a novel about had a subplot that i needed to make like 5 other side characters for, including one that was going to get enough screentime to actually need to be developed a bit. i promptly went overkill and gave him a super cute design and involved backstory and a rounded out personality and generally fell in love with him, so he wound up getting graduated from side character to full standalone dude with his own story.
(now i need to make another oc AND most of the plot for the original subplot, but its like, fine)
N E way his name is Adder! quick stage setting: his world is earth but a bit to the left, but then it tripped off the apocalypse bc some scientists stumbled upon ancient chaos magics deep underground and began studying them with good, knowledge for knowledge's sake style intentions, that rapidly devolved into knowledge for the sake of nationalism less good intentions, which then devolved further into 'how do we capture and harness the ancient chaos beings that are borne of/supply this magic', which promptly culminated in said chaos beings exploding from the ground and making a solid 9/10ths of the planet uninhabitable and generally causing the apocalypse. of course.
adder was born shortly after the apocalypse went down and lived in a bunker with a smallish group of people who are Weirdly* well equipped to handle the whole situation. his mom died when he was very, very little**, leaving him as the only dfab person in the group***. things were mostly stable for a good 7-8 years, and then people started dying off.
*adders parents were the spearheads of the original project and dipped when things started veering towards the 'how do we control it' phase bc they Knew what was going to happen
**she killed herself out of guilt and also some other stuff that is gone into a little farther down in the post
***he insisted on transing his gender from a pretty young age mostly because he didn't want to be treated as a kid, and everyone older than him was a man so he should be too. everyone kind of just shrugged and went with it and figured they'd talk about biology when it became more relevant.
see, the chaos magic in question is very incompatible with being alive, and functions kind of as a hybrid between radiation and communicable rot- prolonged exposure, infected injuries, and ???* will cause Weird Crystallization/Calcification** To Happen To Your Blood, which eventually spreads to your vital organs and kills you. the area the bunker is in is very high in ambient/extant magic, and also is prone to storms that send it down as rain which are p much a death sentence if you're caught in them. also, the woods have a bunch of Fucked Up Monsters hanging out in them that will also kill you. cool. fun. sexy.
*if they understood the full causes and effects down to a t then it wouldn't be called chaos magic, now would it
**if there's a better name for it i cant find it- something something minerals in the bloodstream condensing into patterns that show up on the skin first because it. would look cool. anyway, then it kills you because you need those minerals to be in your bloodstream in blood form and not in patterns of spikes.
this, in combination with the general difficulty that comes with trying to survive in an area with no social support that has changed in ways you're scrambling to understand will, inevitably, come with losses, no matter how much knowledge you prepared yourself with. people died of radiant magic. one or two got caught by the entities. several more, including adder's father, died in an accident trying to get a solar generator going. when the group dwindled in numbers, a couple of them went off to try and find if there were any other people left alive. they never returned.
the end properly happened when the last remaining capital-a Adults went on a supply run- it was a known path with shelter stops along the way, the calculated storm predictions gave them a solid 10 days of clear weather. they left adder (early teens) with his brother and brother's best friend (late teens). they said theyd be back in 3 days.
take a wild guess as to what happened on that front.
a freak storm hit on the 2nd day. adder got caught in it briefly, and developed a patch on his right shoulder. on day 5, adder's brother and his friend got into an argument that turned into a screaming match that turned into a physical fight that turned into the brother killing the friend and then hanging himself, because he didn't want to live without him and everyone else is gone and adder was going to die anyway so-
adder, who was now entirely alone*, didn't know what to do with the bodies, and closed and locked the door to that section so he could ask what to do when the remainder of the group came back. he knew he was probably dying but he didn't feel especially sick, so he kept going about the routine that would maintain the base and would keep him alive and keep things supplied for when the group came back.
*and also roughly in shock, and shoving down down every single emotion because he knows** that's not conducive to survival
**the majority of the group, especially adder's father, were coping with the end of the world with the philosophy of reducing everything down to clinical detached science and methodology. it... kind of worked...? sort of...?
he found most of their bodies in pieces on the shore of the nearby lake when he went to gather supplies there. he says "oh. okay." and buries the pieces he can find in the rocks on the beach and continues with his routine while he waits to die. he doesn't die. the patch on his shoulder spreads down his arm and stops spreading and then de-calcifies and heals fully*. and he goes "oh. okay." and documents it and adjusts his routine to whats necessary to support just one person in a base made for 30+ and continues on as he has been because what else is he going to do?
*~because he's immune~~~ yay~~~**
**this was actually something that was found out pretty early on, because he got a patch as a baby*** and recovered fully after a couple months. the whole thing was documented, but kept secret to avoid 1) anyone suggesting quarantining and/or killing the literal infant and 2) anyone getting Weird about reproduction later down the line. lets just cut that one off at the jump, shall we.
***...which is the other reason his mom killed herself- "hey the apocalypse is my fault and now my child is dying i'm OUT". tbh if adder had actually died there would have been Several more people following suit.
if there's one locked hallway he never opens and never looks at and tries very, very hard to never think about ever- well, its not like there's anyone left to call him on it.
...ANYWAY. THAT'S ALL BACKSTORY. DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT. HE'S FINE.
mostly whats Focused on in any #content that i make is gonna be slice of life- how adder goes about his day to day navigating and documenting an area that Very Much Wants Him Dead, going through the massive library of information left behind by a dead civilization that no one is left to explain, and generally existing as the last person on earth who is fully equipped to do so.
idc about ~~spoiling~~ anything, so the late/end game plot is what happens when he finds out he isn't actually alone, and there are some scattered groups of other people left who he can help* and who can help him and how he handles and heals by not being alone anymore after years and years of isolation. i am allergic to sad endings. fucking sue me.
*guys who stumbled upon his setup by complete accident: "what do you MEAN you have a mass library of otherwise lost knowledge and sustainable technology you have singlehandedly adapted to unknowable magics out of necessity and also live in a fully fleshed out bunker made to survive a DRASTICALLY harsher climate than our group lives in. holy shit please let us actually support you with agriculture and moderately advanced techniques for basic necessity craftsmanship and social structure and shit like that so we can rebuild and have like, electricity"
adder, who hasn't seen another person in a decade and hasn't seen actual new fabric since he was 6: "H-"

Detroit: Become Human Fanfic Recs!
Some fanfics I’ve read that I recommend to you, a discerning reader. Many ships and characters featured below, including:
Connor character studies
Markus/Simon fluff + angst
Connor/Reader or OC classics
Standalone OC stories
Connor-centric stories
Connor: Become Deviant by @vyingvails Ongoing series
Deviancy is a glitch, an instability, a mutation in one’s software. It makes an android feel, think, live, despite it being just a machine that should be incapable of feelings. When an android believes it's more than that, a machine, it becomes a Deviant. It’s what Connor hunts for.
But that doesn't stop Connor from becoming one himself.
(A fic with a great exploration into canon by twisting it on its head early!! Read!!)
Not Quite Electric Sheep by @janisilverstorm One-shot
Androids don’t sleep. Not even deviants. But they do have to process: run diagnostics, allow for the cool down of systems, sort and store memories. After countless life-and-death scenarios, Connor’s programs certainly have a lot of material to work with. But sometimes all those new emotions can make processing… difficult.
(Great Hank interaction! Great exploration into Connor psyche!!)
My Name is Connor, I’m... by @janisilverstorm Ongoing series
He had only ever been a machine taking orders, and now he's got emotions and this strange restlessness that won't leave him alone and really he'd just like for things to make sense. Unfortunately, the world has a nasty habit of not giving you what you want.
(Connor struggling through some Really Tough Times. CW for some implied torture, but a good examination into his thoughts and where he’d be post-game as well.)
The Price of Deviancy by @caitlynmellark
A one shot of Connor experiencing a minor memory of his past due to seeing Markus's friend, Simon, who happens to have the model of a very familiar face.
(CONNORRR AND DANIEL MEMORIESSS)
~~~~
Jericho-centric stories (all characters)
The Jericho Discord by @rk-deviant-800 Ongoing series
North has started a discord for Jericho and all hell is about to break loose.
(A funny fic reflecting the real chaos that can happen in a Discord server. Fluffy, fun and easy to read, so great if you need a palette cleanser from all these angst stories!!)
~~~~
Markus/Simon stories
Ticklish by @trashcanofobsessions One-shot
Just a oneshot based off my headcanon that a lot of caretaker androids, specifically the ones that deal with kids, are programmed with being ticklish, cause kids love that stuff.
(EXTREMELY CUTE ONE-SHOT!!)
Liberty Listening by @trashcanofobsessions Ongoing series
Simon finds himself hopelessly in love with this newcomer. Strangely enough, the newcomer starts to feel the same way.
(You want some canon-compliant excellent Markus/Simon content? I gotchu.)
Clear Skies by @markus-manfreds
Markus doesn't know how to live a life while knowing all the things he's lost. | Simon doesn't know how to show him that he still has things worth living for.
(Post-canon, fluff AND angst. Markus struggling with all that he knows...yes.)
~~~~
Markus/North
The Junkyard by @caitlynmellark One-shot
It is a small little one shot of Markus experiencing PTSD after the Junkyard. A discord I am in spoke a lot about it & we decided that Markus would definitely have PTSD after such a traumatic experience. We wish Quantic Dream covered it in more detail, but that is what fanfics are for, right?
(Yes! It is!!)
Connor/Reader or OC
A coffee a day... by @thenervousmedic
Connor has made a habit out of going to your Coffee shop every morning to get Hank a Coffee, unlike every other time he finally notices the look in your eyes when you stop to stare at him while working.
(What started as cute fluff now has a really fascinating plot as well! Check it out!)
earth is warmer when you laugh by @the-darklings
In the end all you need is warmth.
(A classic of the genre. Kat is a great writer, check it out and her other works!)
Deviant Behavior by @precursorao3
You’ve complained about walking the beat in Detroit for years. Petty crimes, protests, no real action...
So when Captain Fowler gave you orders to respond to a hostage situation, you couldn’t resist. And then you got shot, only to be saved by the android sent by CyberLife…
(ANOTHER classic of the genre, and possibly the most well-known. Can’t make a DBH fic list without this, honestly! Well-written and researched.)
---(SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION AHEAD)---
the silver lining still remains by ME
The Detroit Volunteer Corps does what it can to pick up the pieces of a city setting a new path. Emma Ibori, resident carpenter, builds things to keep the thoughts at bay.
Connor thinks he has a handle on what it means to be alive. But he can barely see through the guilt for all the things he didn’t know -- or barely understand what it means to be a friend just because you can be.
Then a case of disappearances strikes too close to home. And everything shifts again.
(I wrote it. I get to be on the list. *tongue face*! If you enjoy self-indulgent romance fics with a plot, I gotchu babeyyy)
~~~~
Connor/Reader/Markus
Justice and Freedom by @write-to-write-amirite
Y/n, a half human/half android who helps repair and fix other androids finds themselves in a predicament when the fight between androids and humans becomes more apparent each day. They come across those who seek freedom, and others who seek justice. How will y/n react when those two get in the way of her helping others?
(Great premise! Cool plot! Read!!)
~~~
OC stories
Building a Home: a Detroit Side Story by @artsyneurotic
Deviancy among androids is on the rise. We know the tales of Markus, Connor, and Kara in this tumultuous time, but how are other androids dealing with this deviancy? And for that matter, how are the humans?
This is a smaller, more intimate tale of an architect and an android, and the unlikely circumstances in which their newfound connection grows in this increasingly turbulent atmosphere....
(It even comes with its own art! Extremely charming start to this story and I’m already invested in what happens to this pair!! read!!)
