From ITHLYN, which is my favorite and incredible and there's so many lines I want to call out: "“You fucked me,” Barnes says, watching him. Steve looks pained. “We… had… sex. Yes.”"

gfhghfgdfs bucky here is trying to be mean and absolutely failing at it. he thinks he’s coming across a lot meaner than he is - this is him doing as natasha warned and feeling out the pain points, except he’s fucking terrible at it. half of it is that he’s at a place where significant chunks of him implicitly trust Steve, and half of it is right then he’s just got the communication skills of a turnip. This chapter is the first one where we get bucky’s interactions with sam/steve/natasha from Bucky’s POV, and that’s because more or less all previous interactions were just him going [AAAAUGHH I’M TALKING TO PEOPLE WHO MATTER WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON AAAUGHHH *LOUD MENTAL STATIC*]. so right here, bucky’s getting a lot of signals that tell him what’s happening to you right now is great, steve is great, you’re safe and things are good, and he doesn’t trust it. a part of that is trauma-based paranoia, but an even bigger part of that is he’s a little frazzled still and once again fallen into the rut of thinking of “bucky” as a separate malevolent entity. he feels that he, as Barnes, is intruding and stealing something that doesn’t rightly belong to him, i.e. Steve’s love and attention. but he wants it. so he’s struggling with himself (bucky/barnes dichotomy) along with external stimuli (he’s having a terrible week, his hypervigilance is through the roof, he’s suspicious and twitchy and p much constantly in a state of Freaked The Hell Out). that means he can’t really hold a conversation that doesn’t devolve into interrogation-style questions and needling. 

Steve here is trying to do as Natasha and Sam advised and is just trying to follow Bucky’s lead. He’s trying to be honest and upfront with bucky without pushing anything on him or upsetting him, which is a pretty fine line to walk. At the same time, a lot of his own memories have been sugarcoated and gilded with time/grief. I wouldn’t say he’s forgotten the bad times or bucky’s personal flaws, but they definitely have been minimized and hugely overshadowed by how much steve missed him. like, obviously steve didn’t consider bucky to have that many flaws in the first place, but now bucky’s even more the big beautiful pie in the sky for him, which is... well... love is blind but there’s gonna be some stuff to unpack there.
