So many surprise encounters and I'm just trying to finish my massive list of sidequests.

Anyways, long story short I freed all but one of the hostages- that one was killed on his way running out by the enemies. Astra and Wyll were also... blown up, because Astra died and Wyll wouldn't have made it out. Omeluum got Karlach out just in time. Astarion was the first to reach the ladder.

All the baddies decided they were gonna gang up on my girl. T_T It was very rude of them. Poor Karlach had to do all the lockpicking. I had to keep reloading so she could roll natural twenties because she needed a 25. RIP. I probably could have restarted and sent Astarion that way instead, but, well, it's fine.

Everything's fine.

Poor Astarion. I find it absolutely hilarious that the game put him in charge since Astra was out of commission. Just, oh, what's that? Your wife died? Your turn to hold the braincell, then!

Imagine him getting up to the submarine and waiting for everyone to hurry up, and Karlach and Omeluum appearing- but Astra and Wyll are nowhere to be seen, and Karlach is like, "I tried to help her, but the bastards shot her back down! Before I could try to carry her and Wyll, squiddie over here teleported me."

Omeluum: "A thank you for saving your life would have sufficed..."

And the prison is already exploding so Astarion has no choice but to maneuver the submarine to safety.

Astarion did not wake up this morning thinking he was going to have to revive Astra and Wyll.

I've.... never actually had to revive a character yet. I've always been able to "help" them back up, so Withers and the twenty Revivify Scrolls I have were just... chilling all seventy hours of my playthrough so far. Huh.

okay I NEED to yell about Gale again sorry. again not sure if you're aware of this dialogue already, but i'm playing as a hostile character so in the scene where he reveals to you the true nature of the orb I had my character say "All this time i've been traveling with a monster…" and GALE'S RESPONSE HERE KILLED ME. Gale said "All this time, i've been traveling with you despite the tadpole in your head. We are none of us monsters. We are merely hatcheries for monstrous things." …. 😭😭 bro this man is so wise and sincere and I already love his mind so much. that line hits even harder if you're playing as the Dark Urge too.

Hi! I really enjoy your posts, and I would like to ask a question. Please ignore if it's too personal!

How do you look at BG3's companion ages? Do you find them too young/too old?

I'm probably on the younger side of BG3 fans and I am having a hard time identifying with some of them. They are awesome, but I just think myself so out of their league, lol.

Also - thank you so much! It really means a lot people here are so awesome and friendly, I started out with the intention to just scream into the void as an outlet for my hyperfixations, but met so many wonderful people along the way, in such a short span I'm... humbled, really.

But, onto the ask itself!

I don't think of them as either too young or too old, to be completely fair. I don't think we have canon ages set for all of them, and someone else (I'm so sorry, can't find the post or the user now T_T) did a very good job on the guesswork the other day.

There was a time for me, back when I was a teen, where I couldn't possibly level with someone, pixel or not, that was above 30. I think it's normal to feel that way. The way I gave Jaheira a side-eye back in Baldur's Gate 2 while years later Blackwall from DA: Inquisition was the only sensible choice, lol.

But you know what? If I had to, absolutely had to, give my answer I would still put the BG3 companions on the younger scale of things, just because of the lore aspect - so taking into cosideration things like that a 20 year old elf is a baby.

Lae'zel seems to be fairly young? She just went out of her creche, right? So she is whatever the githyanki consider a young adult.

Shadowheart is pretty young too? Without going into spoilers we get a chance to meet someone from her past, and judging by that person's appearance I would say Shadowheart is in her 50s at maximum, which considering the lifespan of half-elves is still young.

Astarion is over 200, not sure how much over 200, but he was an elf, now is completely ageless, so it's tricky when talking about his age. So let's assume his mental age instead? Middle to late 20s at best would be my guess.

Karlach might be around 30? She tells us she was a street kid and then goes straight to being a bodyguard, making me think she was barely 20 when thrown for 10 years to the Blood Wars front.

Wyll also seems to be about his early 30s considering his father's age. Not sure about that though, might be younger? He does have a young face though, so judging by that alone he would be...25?

Gale is, perhaps, the oldest from the core companions considering a human lifespan. Again, judging only by his looks I place him in his late 30s, early 40s. No idea how much of that is his condition 'worsening' his physical appearance.

Halsin? Well, he's an elf, but his mature presence makes him seem on the older side. Not gonna even guess here, have no idea!

Also no idea about Minthara, didn't get to talk to her yet, sorry ^^ Also

So... that gives us 3 young companions and 4...er..."older" ones? :)

Look, I'm 36, not gonna lie that I enjoy pixel people being around my age and I get that an age gap can make people uncomfortable. They will be as much "in your league" as you want them to be. So, whatever you decide to do - first and foremost make sure you are comfortbale with it. Games are a safe medium to explore our boundaries.

From wannabe writer to awesome fanfic writer, what inspires your original characters? I always struggle with creating OCs and I don't know why. They're all so vapid and cliche. Yours seem like they could be in the canon!

And thank you so much for your kind words! Wow, middle school to college! That’s incredible to think about. I still have favorite fics from that same era of my life. In fact I just answered an ask about that very thing!

Anyway... I believe I may have written about this before but the post isn’t coming to mind. I think creating original characters in fanfiction is one of the hardest things to do IMO. One reason is because there are too many traps to fall into--Mary/Gary Sues, damsels in distress, popular girl/guys, unpopular girl/guys, know-it-alls, seductive temptresses, etc. The list of eye-roll-inducing cliches just goes on from there.

And yet... these cliches are somewhat necessary, as they are part of what creates character and personality tropes, which are generally useful in building the foundation of a character. And let’s face it--neither you nor I are revolutionaries when it comes to character building. In fact, almost nobody is. Everything is derivative. No matter what picture we paint, we’re all using the same color palette. I don’t know if you’re hip to the TV Tropes Wiki but scrolling through that for 30 seconds made me fully realize that even the “greats” take from elsewhere. It is for certain one of my favorite resources for writing, especially for OCs.

Another reason why OCs are so challenging is that it’s essential that they are real. They might not be a character written by original creators of the show/movie/book, but they have to be just as believable within the context of the story and any relevant canon reference. They could be a real person. Perhaps a more exaggerated version for entertainment purposes, but still something rooted in reality.

One of the most valuable things you can have as an author is your readers’ willing suspension of disbelief, and that comes from a reasonably good understanding of people--psychologically, sociologically, biologically, etc. From that you get familiarity, understanding, and relatable-ness to your characters.

OMG. So sorry. I just realized you were asking me what my inspirations are... not for writing advice! Sorry DX

All of my OCs are inspired by real people I know, or memorable tv/movie characters. For example, in Vices, Gale has a dignified air about her that reminds me of Lady Olenna Tyrell from Game of Thrones, but her “dark” side (the more punishing side) was derived from the Aunts in Handmaid’s Tale. My primary inspiration for Carter is the relentlessly-optimistic Chris Traeger from Parks and Recreation. I also have had a few friends, both male and female, who share Carter’s worldview (due to similar misfortunes), and who are oddly sanguine about it.

Anyway, I hope that (eventually) answered your question! Sorry I got so carried away XD thanks for the ask!
