Dressing casual. If not his lab coat, he still wears a kind of trenchcoat in some way. And suspenders for a touch of extra class
HEALTH
Bad Habits: -Cant form real human connection - sees everything as object variables to dissect ,explore, and use for experimentation. - Regularly abuses the fuck out of the other negatives because they are inferior idiots - Sociopathic murderer (“for Science”). -Obsessed with Neikan, the demon who created him, and will turn on anyone in her defense, friend or foe. -Views any personal connection to a person like having a pet you're fond for, but nothing is above Neikan. -Stress smoker.
Addictions: -Sexually infatuated by the color purple, - Takes Sadistic pleasure in watching the bold break down, - Gets off on taking control and causing pain in the act of intimacy.
PERSONALITY
Personality: Toruga is a deceptive man by nature, a demon conjured up and hand made by Neikan herself, inspired by Josef Mengele which she had seen in the lives of one of her vessels. Being based on the mad doctor, Toruga himself is brilliant in the fields of genetics, biology, and the anatomy of anything he can get his hands on. Despite the basis, Toruga is simply a being that never was a child, thus has formed a persona that imitates human emotion and relations to get his way. He doesn't feel true connection, he doesn't feel empathy, sympathy, or guilt for what he does, as long as it feeds into the goal of appeasing his mistress and furthering her goals. Which makes lying and altering his persona to the liking of his associates quite easy. Toruga presents himself like a fatherly figure -- even tempered, soft but confidently spoken, and constantly utilizing praise and interest in another when he’s looking to make nice. He’s a master of manipulation and will not hesitate to research a person’s history, or gauge a weakness from conversation alone, and exploit it if it makes them more agreeable or himself more appealing.   He doesnt respond to insults or physical attacks,  not a single thing in the world bothers him, save for the failure of the negatives to complete a task, or if the insult is directed at his mistress. Or if it is impeding his work, because that would make him unappealing to Neikan. Only then will he react. And he will do so swiftly and violently to make his point known. He is not afraid of death threats, or to be beaten or dismembered or tortured, because of his inability to die (Thanks to his connection to Neikan. For as long as she lives, he can) He finds those sorts of threats mildly amusing, because he has been here for centuries, and he will continue to be well after humanity is nothing more than bones and Ash beneath their feet. His personality can swivel on a dime, but overall he is a fairly pleasant person to interact and talk with. He;s had plenty of time to master human expression.  Toruga also tends to be very physical when he shows interest, with subtle touches, unbroken eye contact, and closeness. Its simply the spider tossing the silk of his webs to capture the poor fly that has no idea the fate to come. He can be incredibly jealous and spiteful when it comes to what diverts the attention of his mistress
Strengths: Determined, Even tempered, charming personality. Incredibly intelligent and gifted with holding conversations. A great asset if you need a doctor to work on any sort of viral or bacterial bioweapon, or if ya need a guy that likes to alter and play with mortal genetics. His inability to stay permanently dead makes him quite the threat in theory, and with that demonic origin he does have supernatural strength compared to the average mortal. He has no real blood, just inky mass of dark matter that makes up his form and drips in imitation blood.
Weaknesses: Neikan. Divine weaponry and magic also hurt like a bitch and would require he directly return to neikan to get fixed up.
Fears/phobias: Failing Neikan to the point she abandons him or makes another negative to replace him.
Favourite color:
P U R P L E
Did I say purple?  Very important to know. And any shade that compliments it.
Hobbies: - Kidnapping subjects indiscriminately based on their viability and their chance of being pursued, disfiguring them, wiping their memory, and then using them as test subjects for his viral bioweapon projects. - Making handmade clothing for his test subject children. He’s quite the skilled tailor. He especially loves dressing up his daughter before she ran away - Traveling about to meet with and work closely with assorted allies towards an end goal of toppling human society and shifting power - Taking out his anger and frustration on the negatives because they dont die - Talking to his dead husband he keeps perfectly preserved in a case down in his lab
Theme Song: - “Pet” by perfect circle - “Trust me” from the Devil’s Carnival
SKILLS
Talents/skills: - Tailoring clothing of all materials - Extensive knowledge of the medical field - skilled virologist and biochemist - Manipulative - Skillful liar
Education: Multiple lifetimes of trial and error through multiple dimensions and a variety of different levels of technology he’s explored with. Lacking any formal training, being an extension of his mistress means he also inherits the knowledge of her vessels. Coupled with his own experimentation and studied through multiple worlds.
Abilities: Being a demon made of dark matter means he’s endowed with an assortment of natural abilities, however unlike the more well known hell spawn demons, the negatives and their abilities from Neikan are typically only physical based.  Those abilities include: - Enhanced Strength and Endurance (built up after years of handling monsters, and the lack of human limitations/strains on the body) - Complete Regeneration (as long as the weapon is not enchanted or by divine means) - Minor shapeshifting, limited to his true forms. From human, to the black mass in the shape of a man, to a beastial tiger form - A photographic and auditory memory that retains just about any information he finds worthy of withholding. It also allows him to learn any language with ease after being exposed to it for a period of time
FAMILY, FRIENDS AND FOES
Personal history: Created around the time period of Pride’s((The Vessel) lifetime, 6 vessels prior to Nikki, Toruga was formed at first out of curious reasons and the need for a friend, but her intent with him became malicious shortly after her grief in the following life which split her soul into two halves. Left with nothing but malice and hatred for humanity, with the worst aspect of her being, Neikan utilized all her negativity to create a figure that would help speed up the process of ending the lives of the future vessels. Toruga was based on Josef Mengele, which Neikan had been exposed to as a child through the eyes of her second vessel, Hate. The demon was never a child, born as a perfectly capable adult to keep this young grieving woman company, it was at the start of his existence which paved the way to his obsessive love for his Creator. Toruga was her friend, her pet project that she left responsible with overseeing any of her new creations were given a job and set in order. While not active at first, Toruga observed humanity from the distance and learned the art of imitating them perfectly to blend in and manipulate what he understood. He studied their texts, he studied their culture, the array of species, their anatomies, their science and their technologies, absorbed it all until he could put it to use at the very end. Toruga is in love with his mistress, but with her fixation on her vengeance and the delicate heartbreak, she refuses to see him in such a way. Which, in turns, drives his unyielding determination to please her to make her see him. Coming to the existence of the last vessel, Nikki, things got complicated. Neikan assigned him a task to make a malleable beast that can infiltrate, a living machine to be the wolf in sheep's clothing, so when the last life became known, this being would be sent to kill it. Unfortunately for them, that bio weapon became the last life. Once inheriting Neikan and all the previous lives, any of the previous wiring he had instilled in the fetus were completely wiped away with the new presence of thought and free will -- the result, which would send Toruga on a wild chase to retrieve his experiment , all the way back to Earth. He spends years having to establish bases and connections on earth, all while scouring for his little project, taking well over 10 years before finally finding her. When he eventually does kidnap her and attempt to reset her mentally, Nikki retaliates and flees, leaving him with the iconic face scar he has now, but his project was now an unstable mess.
Toruga is a man who juggles many projects at once. Despite a singular failure, he is always looking to make improvements, which would have eventually led to the creation of Malakaid as a failsafe to getting rid of Nikki, then immediately lost after yet another raid by Rosie and the authorities. But there is no stopping, there is always alternatives to getting what he wants. His web is vast, his determination and will unyielding. The world will fall to his mistress, one way or another. As of now, Toruga works closely with a variety of associates, primarily the Branches of Virtues because of their plentiful assets, and acts as a kind of apostle for Neikan to gain more souls willing to join their cause. His main project is a viral mutagen called the Uxoru virus, and helping work towards a modified super soldier serum made from Angel’s blood.
Parents names: Neikan Shadou (Sheila Lunarcrest)
Siblings: The other negatives, including John, Sebura, Kura, and Joku. By technicality, anyone made by Neikan is a kind of sibling.
Relationship with siblings: Toruga is the head honcho of the show, responsible for directing and punishing the others for their failures. Their stupidity and clumsiness prove to be incredibly irritating to him, and because they cant die he has no hesitation in brutally maiming and abusing them for it. They all have a bitterness, but a respectful fear towards him, and he knows it well. None of them are his equal, for he was the first, and he intends to keep it that way.
Partner/Spouse: -Vermont (Former husband, now deceased. Murdered mistakenly by Toruga himself after Vermont questioned Neikan’s intentions and plans. )
Children:
- Nikki Ai (His first experiment, artificially created and planted within a mother. She has no recollection of him as her creator, but rather this monster that hunts her down. She never came back as she was suppose to, and thus is a nuisance he needs dead)
- Malakaid (The second improvement to Nikki’s design , made from Nikki and Jacob’s dna, spliced with his own. Malakaid was stolen as a baby by Rosie and imprinted on her. Because of this, he will not go back to Toruga.)
( From his relationship with Vermont)
- Veronica Winchester (Eldest daughter, ran away at 12 years old.)
- Toby Winchester ( A young boy, still living with him. He drags him around on his work trips when he’s able to. Because he witnessed his birth parent murdered as a toddler, Toby is practically a skittish mute of a boy that fears his father but will not dare leave the way his sister did.)
Enemies:
Basically got beef with everyone bcuz he probably fucked over your loved ones at some point and just doesn't recall it. He primarily has enemies with Rosie( A very personal vendetta) and the Angel Project, the Divine Calvary, and any enemies of the Branches of Virtues. He doesn’t try to make enemies but if people are gonna try to stop him from completing his work because its “unethical” and “Inhumane” then a bitch gonna go into the cage with the rest of the subjects. But he’s a hard man to hate because as long as you are blissfully ignorant, he seems like such a pleasant man to keep company with.
Associates:
- The Branches of Virtue
- Nathair Elerdand
- Neikan and the Negatives
Affiliated verse:
Tag: :The Good Doctor (Toruga):
- Iniquitous Essence (The info above)
- Pokeverse : Toruga is a scientist of the Aether foundation , working on a secret specialized project for Lusamine, to create a world where human and pokemon are one -- as halflings. He experiments using genetic information gathered from the ultra beast data, along with splicing human dna with that of Pokemon, varying from adults to unborn fetuses. Everyone of which failed (dying in a matter of months, if born. Dying and resulting in a stillbirth. Or death induced by the Human body rejecting the intrusive genetics and triggering a shut down response) until finally there was Rosie. He studied her for the entirety of her childhood, a secret success he dare not report until certain she would not die like the rest, only to be lost in a fire (as far as he knows) aimed at silencing her rowdy father.
Much to his dismay, Toruga continues his research on human genetics, milking the foundations of its assets to feed his curiosity, with no real loylty to anyone but himself. But those skulligans are a promising bunch of nobodies to utilize for testing. He’s on the hunt to get his pet project back

Peter knew he was dreaming.
He knew he was dreaming because he was sitting in class, waiting for a test, a test for which he had not studied.  “I haven’t studied for a test in over a decade,” he announced to the class, disregarding the weird looks they gave him.  Why should he care?  It was a dream.
But sitting in class while dreaming was boring, why bother?  So he went out the window, webslinging over dream-New York, trying to fly.
Flying worked… a little… but odd entities were now flying through the air with him and that was getting annoying.  Especially when some of them threatened to turn into threatening figures, and THAT was no good.  He didn’t want it to turn into THAT kind of dream.  He searched the dark skies for one of the Sentinels to hijack.  He had ridden Sentinels in dreams before, and could convince them to take him back to the Penthouse.  He was delighted to pick out the Mark VII (one of his favorites) and landed on it’s back. It, sadly, had no Tony in it, but he still managed to convince it to take him back to the penthouse, just as the other flying entities began to engage in battle.  Peter didn’t want to have yet another battle-dream. Those were getting old, and usually depressing.  Besides, he had other ideas for this dream.
The Mark VII took him to something resembling the penthouse, if the penthouse was all decked out for Christmas and featured a swimming pool full of rocks.  Peter tried not to complain – controlling these dreams was always difficult and never lasted for long.  And he had an idea… and idea he’d never admit to in real life, but had harbored quite a few fantasies about.
Especially since his lover had surprised him in the lab with some rough sex over a table featuring not one, but two suits.  Two suits – and some nanotech in intimate places.  Wait… come to think of it… Peter had admitted to it, hadn’t he? Hadn’t he told Tony he wasn’t fighting the suit, because he hoped it would “fuck him first?”
But that had been completely bravado.  And empty request.
Tony has assured him he didn’t share… even with himself.
And that was the point of the dream.  If he could pull it off.  The Mark VII was taking forever to land and scattering the tacky lawn chairs all over the pool deck, Peter had to waist precious time fetching them in hopes to find a surface they could fuck on, fearing he’d lose control of the dream, or else wake up before anything could really get started.  He never had control of these dreams for long, and when he did, it meant his phone was about to wake him up so he’d have time to check Tumblr before Differential Equations.
He stood there, looking up at the nighttime sky, on the deck of the penthouse that was not Tony’s penthouse, trying to mentally summon other suits.  When that didn’t work he turned back to the Mark VII, draped his arms around it’s neck, and pressed his body up against it.  Sometimes he could be bold enough to do this to the real Tony, but in dreams he had no problems at all.
Hell, in dreams he could say anything.  Tony would never know.
“Hey big boy,” he said shamelessly, looking up into the red-and-gold face, the face of his dreams. “Wanna fuck?”
Chapter 2
“I’ve never been with anyone else but Tony,” he crooned, running one hand over the perfect arm, fingering the plates lovingly, caressing, exploring.  The way he had only be able to do on very brief occasions, when he actually had access to the suits without Tony around.  (And even then he couldn’t do it for long.  FRIDAY was always watching.)
“Not that I want to be. Tony’s kindof perfect.”  His fingers wandered down to the forearms, investigating, discovering.  (Of course, he was only exploring a memory.  How detailed was it?  Was he remembering every aspect of the forearms exactly?  The cuffs had a more rectangular aspect as they protruded over the glove, far more angular than he remembered.  Was that accurate?  Damnit he’d have to find out when he was awake.  If he had this dream once, he might be able to have it again.)
“But you’re different. I’ve had a crush on you since forever. Some of my earliest sex-dreams were about you.
“You’re so beautiful…” he sighed, laying his head against the suit’s chest.  He reached up for the head and angled it so the face lay against his head.  The suit obeyed.  “Every part of you is beautiful.  I can say that in front of Tony, it doesn’t hurt his pride to hear me say it.” He dropped his hand to the hip of the suit, then (since this was a dream!) moved it back to run his fingers over the smooth metal of the ass.  “He knows you’re beautiful.  I try not to gush too much because that makes me feel like a little fanboy.  I’m constantly trying not to sound like a fanboy.  Constantly trying and failing.”
He squeezed the ass of the suit (ridiculous of course since he was squeezing metal, but there was no one there to see it) and then moved his hand to caress the leg, then the upper thigh.  He pretended, for a moment, that he was touching Tony (oh if only he had the nerve to really do this to Tony!) but quickly got distracted by the clever way the upper thigh of the suit fit into the socket.  He explored the fit with his fingers even as he kept confessing.
“But it’s always that way, isn’t it?  Trying to sound like an adult.  Trying to act like an adult.  Trying not to forget to remember not to act childish.  We’ve been together forever and I’m still struggling to act like a grown-up around him.  That’s why I can tell him how beautiful you are… but you’re beautiful…”
He turned his face a fraction to press kisses against the cold metal as he slipped his hand into the hand of the suit.
“And I’ve always known,” he whispered, “That being fingered by you would be so much hotter than playing with any sex-toy.
“Yes,” he moaned as the suit closed its hand, extending the index finger.  Peter moaned and wrapped his hand around it.  He moved his head and gazed up into the narrow rectangles that made the suit’s eyes.  “I need this inside me.  You can do that for me, can’t you?”
The eyes lit up in two blinding white rectangles and Peter started so badly he woke up.
Peter moaned loudly into the pillow… dammit he had been so close!  Actually he had been nowhere close, but certainly closer than any dream he had before. But now he was just in bed, coming upon dawn, and the dream was far away.
“S’okay baby.  I’m right here.  You’re dreaming,” Tony murmured behind him, reaching out and rubbing his back as he usually did after nightmares.
“I know I was dreaming I was dreaming and I was about to get fingerfucked by the suit this isn’t fair!” he yelled.  Or tried to yell, but couldn’t.  He couldn’t move his mouth.  Or anything at all.
“Great, I’ve been deprived of a suit-sex dream AND I have sleep paralysis to boot?!?!” he shouted pointlessly in his head… but wait… didn’t sleep paralysis mean he was still asleep?  And if he was still asleep, didn’t that mean he could find the dream again?  His eyes were closed anyway, and he willed himself back to it.  Back to that strange penthouse that wasn’t their penthouse, to the deck with the swimming pool full of rocks, back into the arms of the Mark VII…
And it worked.  He couldn’t believe his luck (and tried not to think about it too much, thinking about it would certainly ruin it) but it worked.  Of course it was daylight now, and they were dancing together (because nothing was fair!) and also surrounded by the other suits, lounging around in the tacky deck chairs and drinking unknown substances from martini glasses but   Peter tried not to think about it too hard.  At least they were slow dancing, and that was something he could work with. He slid his hand down the suit’s arm until he had the forefinger in his hand again and began talking quickly.
“You’ll do this for me, won’t you?  I need you to finger me before Tony really wakes up.  I’ll never have the guts to ask for this in real life.  And it’s not cheating.  And you want to… I know you do.”
He probably didn’t have much time.  He took the Mark VII by the hand and led to the nearest workable surface, something that looked like a solid block but was covered with some kind of fabric.  It was couch-high and would do for what Peter wanted.  There were other suits there but he shooed them away (wait, were there people in the crowd, now too?  Please don’t let there be people here.  He NEEDED this.)
“Ignore them,” he said guiding the suit to sit on the block.  “Stay with me, stay with me,” he whispered as he climbed onto the suit’s lap.  “Stay with me, focus on me,” he said, wrapping his arms around the suit’s neck, but he was mostly talking to himself.  “You can do this for me.  Please Tony, I need it.”
No. He wasn’t begging, not this time. The dream was no place for begging. He took the wrist of the suit in his hand and forcefully brought it to his mouth, wetting it generously with his mouth.
“You’re going to do this for me.  You can do this for me, can’t you?”
Tony moved against him again and Peter woke with a start. He was really awake now, and able to move, and he wasn’t disappointed at all.  He closed his eyes and smiled into the pillow.
He knew what came next.
Tony would kiss him on the side of his face.  Then, unless he was feeling amorous, there would be a trip to the bathroom.  Then he might return… but he might not.  Because he MIGHT wind up checking his phone, and that might mean a trip to the kitchen.  If Peter wasn’t awake.  When Peter was awake Tony always talked to him first.
Peter wasn’t going to be awake.  Oh no.  Peter had serious dreaming to do.

There’s been a pretty big decline in the number of anthropology majors since 2013.
Tumblr media
This coincides with similar declines in other social sciences and humanities fields, in particular those that are more oriented to qualitative analysis.
To understand what’s going on, I think the graph more or less speaks for itself. While there’s been a strong pro-STEM rhetoric in the US for at least 15 years or so — combined with an anti-liberal arts rhetoric this discourse got very much entrenched as the new normal after the Great Recession. The economists mark the recession as lasting officially from late 2007 to mid 2009, but of course the effects of that period lasted for years (and they’re still going on today). I started my job as a professor in late 2008, but by late 2009, and over the following few years, I was given a pay cut, they stopped cleaning our offices regularly, they turned off the hot water (which we never got back), and some faculty on campus lost their phones, all to cut costs. Lots of departments all over the country were shuttered, faculty were laid off, and tuition skyrocketed. This was also the era of MOOCs (massive open online courses), which were the hottest new invention purpose-built to render college faculty redundant.
Amid this chaos, students just entering college were met with a deafening roar from their parents, the media, and clueless college administrators: if you ever want a job, you need to major in something that will get you one — and that means something “hard” with a strong focus on math (never mind whether you like it or not, or if you’re good at it). This claim is, and always has been, absurd on its face for many reasons, not the least of which is that it’s never been the case that there’s a strong, direct connection between what one majors in and what career path one ends up following. In a small number of technical fields, especially ones related to engineering, it does matter. But it should be obvious to everyone that *not all jobs are related to engineering.* Using that standard for someone working in, say, advertising, or insurance, or retail, or public relations — or basically almost everything — is ridiculous. That’s not so say that those fields don’t involve math or technical skills (they do!), but that they also involve a ton of other kinds of technical skills that one can learn from other disciplines.
Basically, a whole generation of students is being scammed into believing a very narrow set of learning trajectories is the only one worth “investing” in because it suits the needs and desires of a class of tech-minded bosses who desperately don’t want their employees to think critically about what they’re being told to do.
Anyway, back to the chart. It makes sense that 2013 is the year that things begin turning for anthropology BAs because students entering college four years earlier, in 2009, were the first cohort to start at university with the post-recession world fully in place. They were the first to have experienced the recession first-hand, to see millions of people lose their jobs, and then to start college knowing that they, too, would soon enter the job market. And with everyone telling them that anthropology has no value (even Obama, whose mother was an anthropologist, got in on the “bash the liberal arts” game), why would students bother choosing that major? Now, six years later, it’s still something I deal with every day in my job, trying to get my students to see value in what they’re doing in their anthropology courses.
But wait, there’s one more thing, and the real reason I started this post in the first place. First, look at this chart of BA degrees earned, by race:
Tumblr media
What you see is a steady increase in the number of BA degrees across various racial categories (the full report discusses problems with these race/ethnicity data, but this is a workable proxy).
But here’s the chart for anthropology:
Tumblr media
What you see here is a flat-lining of anthropology degrees among students of color, post-2013, but a precipitous decline of anthropology degrees among white students in the same period. I don’t think this can be explained simply by looking at increasing numbers of students of color in American universities (I think the previous chart would look different than it does if that were the case). I think there’s probably something else going on, but I’m not exactly sure what it is.
I’m just putting this here for some thought. The report I’m drawing from is here.

December 31 is Bright Idea Day 2018, anniversary of the Day the Lights Went On
Between Christmas and New Year’s Day, here at Millard Fillmore’s Bathtub we celebrate a variety of historically holy days. December 31, by tradition, is Bright Idea Day, the anniversary of the day Thomas Edison demonstrated for the public a working light bulb, in 1879.
100,000 people gather in Times Square, New York City (surely not the 2 million predicted by NBC!) tonight, and millions more around the world, in festivities for the new year made possible by the work of Thomas Alva Edison.
Here it is, the invention that stole sleep from our grasp, made clubbing possible, and launched 50,000 cartoons about ideas:
The light bulb Thomas Edison demonstrated on December 31, 1879, at Menlo Park, New Jersey – Wikimedia image (GFDL)
The light bulb. It’s an incandescent bulb.
It wasn’t the first bulb. Edison a few months earlier devised a bulb that worked with a platinum filament. Platinum was too expensive for mass production, though — and Edison wanted mass production. So, with the cadre of great assistants at his Menlo Park laboratories, he struggled to find a good, inexpensive filament that would provide adequate life for the bulb. By late December 1879 they had settled on carbon filament.
Edison invited investors and the public to see the bulb demonstrated, on December 31, 1879.
Thomas Edison in 1878, the year before he demonstrated a workable electric light bulb. CREDIT: Thomas Edison, head-and-shoulders portrait, facing left, 1880. Prints and Photographs Division, Library of Congress. Reproduction number LC-USZ62-98067
Edison’s successful bulb indicated changes in science, technology, invention, intellectual property and finance well beyond its use of electricity. For example:
Edison’s Menlo Park, New Jersey, offices and laboratory were financed with earlier successful inventions. It was a hive of inventive activity aimed to make practical inventions from advances in science. Edison was all about selling inventions and rights to manufacture devices. He always had an eye on the profit potential. His improvements on the telegraph would found his laboratory he thought, and he expected to sell the device to Western Union for $5,000 to $7,000. Instead of offering it to them at a price, however, he asked Western Union to bid on it. They bid $10,000, which Edison gratefully accepted, along with the lesson that he might do better letting the marketplace establish the price for his inventions. Other inventive labs followed Edison’s example, such as the famous Bell Labs, but few equalled his success, or had as much fun doing it.  (Economics teachers:  Need an example of the marketplace in action?)
While Edison had some financial weight to invest in the quest for a workable electric light, he also got financial support, $30,000 worth, from some of the finance giants of the day, including J. P. Morgan and the Vanderbilts who established the Edison Light Company.
Edison didn’t invent the light bulb — but his improvements on it made it commercial. “In addressing the question ‘Who invented the incandescent lamp?’ historians Robert Friedel and Paul Israel list 22 inventors of incandescent lamps prior to Joseph Wilson Swan and Thomas Edison. They conclude that Edison’s version was able to outstrip the others because of a combination of three factors: an effective incandescent material, a higher vacuum than others were able to achieve (by use of the Sprengel pump) and a high resistance lamp that made power distribution from a centralized source economically viable.”
Edison’s financial and business leadership acumen is partly attested to by the continuance of his organizations, today — General Electric, one of the world’s most successful companies over the past 40 years, traces its origins to Edison.
Look around yourself this evening, and you can find a score of ways that Edison’s invention and its descendants affect your life. One of the more amusing effects is in cartooning, however. Today a glowing lightbulb is universally accepted as a nonverbal symbol for ideas and inventions. (See Mark Parisi’s series of lightbulb cartoons, “Off the Mark.”)
Even with modern, electricity-saving bulbs, the cartoon shorthand hangs on, as in this Mitra Farmand cartoon.

Or see this wonderful animation, a video advertisement for United Airlines, by Joanna Quinn for Fallon — almost every frame has the symbolic lightbulb in it.
Electrification of America, and the consequent spread of electric lighting and electrical machines to make domestic and industrial life more productive, and the spread of great public works to enable these and other inventions to spread, were made possible by a people roughly united in advancing progress, what historians now call “the progressive agenda” and the great advances of the Progressive Era.
Could we get such agreement among workers, corporate bosses and many levels of government today? When we celebrate anniversaries, like the demonstration of the light bulb, we celebrate the united polity that made such things possible, too.
Gee, I wonder who were the dignitaries to whom Edison demonstrated the electric light on that New Years Eve, in 1879. Anyone know? We can safely wager that there were representatives of the Vanderbilts and Morgans there, families who invested in Edison as an inventor.

Metalworking Boot Camp Part 1: Metallurgy, Hammers, and Dollies
A few months ago, I had the pleasure of traveling to the headquarters of Classic Trucks magazine to give a private workshop for Ryan Manson, the editor, and his assistant, Christian Arriero. I’ve been teaching people metalworking skills for over 20 years, and I always enjoy helping people to improve their metalworking knowledge and abilities. The plan was to cover some of the most fundamental metalworking tools and processes, and follow up with a series of articles so our readers can advance their skills and knowledge, too.
Metalworking is a huge subject, and I think the best way to start is with a brief overview of metallurgy. I know the vast majority of our readers don’t have a background in science or engineering, so I’ll keep it simple.
Metals are used for car and truck manufacturing because they combine high strength with excellent workability. This is a result of the attraction between the crystals, or grains, that form the structure of metals. We’re all familiar with materials comprised of crystals—sand and salt are two examples—but neither of these have much attraction between the crystals, so they can be poured like water. With metals, there is a very strong bond between neighboring crystals, and this is what gives metals their tremendous strength. If you want to make a fender or a frame for a truck, however, you need a material that can be shaped. This is where metals like steel really shine because they can be reshaped with ease. Steel has excellent formability because the bonds between the crystals are flexible enough to allow some movement, while maintaining the metal’s strength.
Steel is made from iron, but pure iron does not have a great deal of strength. Tiny amounts of carbon are added to iron to make steel, and in general, the more carbon that’s added, the stronger the steel gets. Most steel for bodywork has less than 1 percent carbon, but even that tiny amount is enough to bring a huge increase in strength, while still allowing workability. The steels used to make parts like gears have even more carbon (plus other exotic alloying materials like vanadium and molybdenum). These steels are engineered to have enormous strength, but they have very limited workability.
At room temperature, the iron atoms in steel arrange themselves as a Body Centered Cubic. To visualize this, imagine a cube with an iron atom at each corner and another atom right in the center of the cube. See above illustration.
Many years ago, I got some excellent pointers in metalworking from Scott Knight–the first person I found who taught classes in metalworking–and he described metal as a matrix of BBs held together with rubber bands. While this is not a perfect analogy, it’s an easy way to visualize how metals can have both strength and workability.
Let’s talk about the hand tools most commonly used to work sheetmetal: hammers and dollies. There are a vast array of weights, shapes, and styles of hammers made, but we’ll focus on the ones that I find most useful. Hammers are often named for the “peen” end (the portion of the head opposite the face). Some common types are pick, vertical chisel, and cross peen hammers. While the peen end has many uses, in this article we’ll be concentrating on the face. The most common autobody hammers have a round face between 1 1/4 and 1 9/16 inches in diameter, with a weight between 14 and 18 ounces. You will find some hammers with square faces, or other unusual configurations, but we’ll focus on the more common types.
Many body hammers have a face that looks flat, but truly flat faces are not ideal because if you strike with the hammer at even a slight angle to the metal, only the edge of the face will hit, leaving a “smile” in the metal. I consider 12 inches to be the ideal radius for the face of a general-purpose body hammer. I sometimes use hammers with a 4- or 2-inch radius face. These are used for working in tight concave areas, or when I need to stretch the metal a lot for a particular application.
I always like to “ease” the edges of the face on a new body hammer. The faces on most hammers have a relatively sharp edge, which is prone to marking the metal, so I routinely sand a 1/16-inch radius around the edge of the face.
Another favorite tool is a slap hammer, which has a large face with a very low crown, and this is ideal for doing the final smoothing on metal panels.
Dollies come in a huge range of sizes, shapes, and weights. A dolly needs to weigh at least 3 pounds to be most effective. There are some dollies that are lighter, such as the low-profile dollies used where clearance is an issue. These can be very helpful when you need to slip a dolly between a body panel and an inner reinforcement.
Dollies work best when their curvature closely matches the shape of the panel being worked. Usually you select a dolly with slightly more curvature than the panel, since a dolly that doesn’t have sufficient curvature will only touch at the edges. That’s why low-crown and medium-crown dollies get the most use, since very few body panels on cars and trucks are high-crown. There are several dollies made that combine low and medium-crown surfaces. It’s also good to have a dolly with a large, flat face, ideally with a second flat face intersecting at 90 degrees so you have a nice corner to use for making or straightening flanges. My personal favorite is an “egg” dolly but everyone will eventually find which dolly is best for their own style.
There are body tools made with textured surfaces, called “shrinking” hammers and dollies. I have tried these, and in my view, they are no better at shrinking than smooth-surfaced tools. I don’t recommend using any tools that intentionally put marks in the metal.
You’ll find a wide range of pricing, and quality, with hammers and dollies. If you buy good-quality ones and give them reasonable care they will last a lifetime. The least expensive hammers and dollies are made from inferior materials. These get nicked and dented easily, then these defects on your tools will transfer to the metal you’re trying to hammer smooth. I recommend starting with just a few good-quality hammers and dollies, and you can broaden your collection as the need arises.
The photos illustrate the most important points in this article. Tune in next time, and we’ll show you how these tools can be used with precision, and some of the great work they are capable of doing. You can also check out my YouTube channel for a lot of free, in-depth instruction on metalworking and welding.
Steel is comprised primarily of iron atoms, arranged in a Body Centered Cubic pattern. There is one atom at each corner of a cube, with one more atom positioned in the center. This BCC pattern expands in all directions to form the crystals (or grains) of the metal, which have strong but flexible bonds between them. This is what gives steel its impressive combination of strength and formability.
These are the hammers I find most useful. From left to right, we have a light pick hammer, a cross peen hammer, a “dinging” hammer (with one square face), a general-purpose pick hammer, and a curved cross chisel hammer.
Here’s a close-up view of the heads on two of my favorite hammers. The face of the hammer on the left is 1 9/16-inch diameter. The square face on the other hammer is 1 3/16 inch across, and the round face is 1 1/4-inch diameter. There are situations where larger and smaller hammer faces will be beneficial.
Here are some other hammers used for special applications. On the left is a “long reach” dinging hammer, in the center is a high-crown “linear-stretch” hammer, and on the right is a doorskin hammer.
The curvature on the face of the hammer is quite important. For general-purpose work, I like a hammer with a 12-inch radius.
This hammer has a 4-inch radius face. While not used as often as the previous hammer, it’s helpful for getting into small concave areas, or when I want to stretch the metal a lot.
This hammer has a 2-inch radius face. It can fit into very tight recesses but must be used with care, since it can stretch metal very quickly.
Most new hammers come with a fairly sharp edge of the face, which can leave marks in the metal. I sand a 1/16-inch radius on the edge of my hammer faces, like the hammer in the foreground.
A slap hammer is one of my favorite tools for doing fine-quality finish work. The one in the foreground is my own personal design, while the one in the background is shop-made from surplus metal.
These are aluminum-headed hammers, sometimes used when heat-shrinking metal.
The Bullseye Pick is another great tool. When you squeeze the handle, the pick on the lower arm strikes the metal right in the center of the “gunsight” on the top arm. This tool is ideal for raising tiny low spots, giving you pinpoint control.
These are my favorite dollies. Left to right, in the front row is an egg dolly and a low-crown dolly. In the back row is a general-purpose dolly, a toe dolly, and a heel dolly.
Some people favor the general-purpose dolly because it has variety of shapes, and it also has a nice handgrip built into it.
My all-time favorite is the egg-shaped dolly. This dolly can be used with any panel from flat to as round as a basketball. This covers the vast majority of contours found on the bodies of cars and trucks.
You should have at least one dolly with two flat faces that meet at 90 degrees, like this heel dolly. This is great for straightening flanges and other specialized operations.
Next month I’ll give you some in-depth instruction on how hammers and dollies are used to do top-quality bodywork. You may be surprised about how much control you have once you learn to use these tools properly.

W Is for Writer: A 2010 Interview with Sue Grafton (1940-2017)
This interview from the February 2010 issue of Writer’s Digest is posted in fond memory of the late Sue Grafton, who passed away on December 28, 2017, at the age of 77.
Five books from the end of her alphabet series, Sue Grafton says it doesn’t get any easier—and there’s always another lesson to learn about the ABCs of writing.
BY DIANA PAGE JORDAN
What was I thinking? I ask myself that to this day,” says Sue Grafton, her Southern lilt wrapped inside a laugh, of her 26-book alpha-murder mystery series-in-progress. Having begun with A Is for Alibi in 1982, and averaging a book every two years, she’s now five letters away from the culmination, likely to be titled Z Is for Zero. Born in Louisville, Ky., Grafton is the daughter of attorney and novelist C.W. Grafton. She began her professional life as a screenwriter for TV movies—until somebody told her agent she knew how to write character but not plot. Grafton was furious. “I said to myself, ‘Oh, you want plot? I will teach myself how to plot.’” She decided the mystery novel was the best avenue.
The birth of the series was further fueled by the contentious divorce in which she was embroiled for six years. She’s famously said that during the process, she kept imagining ways to murder her husband—and suddenly found herself with no shortage of premises.
Nearly three successful decades later, December marked the release of the latest installment, U Is for Undertow. The book centers on a young man known to have a loose relationship with the truth who tells Grafton’s iconic series protagonist, private investigator Kinsey Millhone, that he witnessed two men burying an abducted child. Grafton’s conversation with Writer’s Digest proves the dry wit that helped begin it all is still intact today.
[Sue Grafton’s Advice for Writers: Put in the Time]
Many years ago, you predicted you’d reach the letter Z when you were 109 and crossing the country in a paramedic van. How does it feel to be nearing the end of the series now?
The books are getting harder, to my great dismay … and I’m thinking I do not want to write if the juice is gone. I’ve seen writers who go on when they should have been put out to pasture. So, when I start a new book and I’m dismayed and distressed and can’t find the story line, I’m always thinking, “Uh oh—maybe the juice is gone, and that’s why this is so hard.”
Now, I went through this with S Is for Silence and T Is for Trespass, and I should know by now that it’s going to be harder than I thought, but I just can’t learn the lesson. One of my sayings is trust the process, and I just can’t do that, because I keep thinking it’s over, and nobody’s told me. These books are a real struggle for me, and the universe owes me an easy one. I’m waiting for it.
You’ve also said you’ll always write, so what does that mean about possible retirement?
I can’t wait to retire! Everybody I know is retired, and they go on these lovely trips, and I have to sit here struggling with the next book. When I get to Z Is for Zero, I’m just going to see what needs to be done. … It’ll be a good adventure to see what comes next. It’s been taking me two years per book, so two times five books, and I am currently 69, so add 10 years, and I’m going to be 80. Now that’s ridiculous.
Do you have a sense of what’s going to happen to Kinsey when you hit Z?
No. You have to understand, this is a form of mental illness. I fully own it. In my mind, I am only privileged to know what she chooses to share, and she assures me that someb things are just not my business, thank you. I don’t tell her. She tells me. I discover things about her in the process of writing. I don’t have a great scheme afoot. I try to keep honest, I try not to repeat myself. I try to let her evolve as she will, not according to my dictates. It’s a very odd process.
What have you learned in writing the series?
I’m learning the same lesson every single time. I’m learning to trust the process. I’m trying to remember that writing should be a form of play. I keep saying the fate of the free world does not hang in the balance. Even if I write a book that fails, nothing will happen. I’ll be mortified and embarrassed, but lives will not be lost over this. I take writing terribly seriously, and sometimes that just gets in my way. Writing is about the Shadow, which is about play. I just have to learn that again. And, in my own life, it’s like I can’t learn that I’ll rise to the occasion. I do rise to the occasion, but I’m never sure that’s going to happen. I keep thinking, Uh-oh, this is going to be the book that does me in. So that frightens me so desperately that I get into a panic when I should shut my mouth and get on with it.
Your readers would never expect that you struggle so much with the writing.
I know. I read other writers [and] I think, she does it the easy way, or he does it. It couldn’t be hard for him, for her. And I just think it’s good for people to know it’s always hard, at least for me, partly because I’ve never figured out how to do it quicker. I’m slow and I’m meticulous, and that’s just my nature. I don’t know how I’ll get through the next five books, but I’m not going to worry about it. I’m like Scarlett O’Hara: I’ll just worry about that tomorrow.
What’s your process?
I write a journal for each of the novels. I usually keep the journals about 50 pages long, and create as many as I need. So with S Is for Silence, I think the journals were 300–400 single-spaced pages, and the manuscript itself was only 500 and some. I call it a long, whiney conversation I have with myself about what I’m doing. It’s just self-talk—what have I done, what am I thinking about doing, what do I imagine will work, what can I do, what can I not do—and I just chase myself from page to page, hoping inspiration will strike. It takes forever. I throw away so many ideas, you would not believe it. And they’re never workable.
What about this voice you talk about, the Shadow?
My problem is I can’t get out of my own way. Shadow knows how to write books. Ego does not. So when I’m trying to put together a book, Ego is the one saying, “I’ll do it, I’ll do it, I’ll do it.” And I’m going, “No you won’t. You don’t know what you’re doing.” Shadow is just that still, quiet voice in your soul that tells you if you’re on track or off track.
At which letter did you feel the series really caught on? And when were you sure that Kinsey could carry it for 26 books?
I sold A Is for Alibi on the basis of the first 65 pages. My advance was $10,000, which, by Hollywood standards, was paltry. The good news was that I was writing solo instead of by committee, and that felt great. A sold maybe 4,000 or 5,000 copies. I’ve never seen the early numbers. But I did write and sell B Is for Burglar, and then C. By the time F Is for Fugitive came out in paperback and G Is for Gumshoe came out in hardback, both books hit the bestsellers list in the same season. That was heady stuff.
Early in the series, I’d lose track of Kinsey’s “voice,” and I’d have to go back and read the earlier books to remind myself what she sounded like and how her mind worked. I’d have to guess that by G, I felt connected to her in an easy and natural way. A is still in print and still selling, by the way—as are all the other books up and down the line. I don’t take anything for granted. The next book—each new book—always feels like the first.
Where did Kinsey come from?
I am Kinsey Millhone. But she is my unlived life. I got married for the first time when I was 18, the second time when I was 23. Then, I married for good and for all to my beloved Steven Humphrey when I was 37. So, she is the adventures I’ve never had. Since she only knows what I know, it means I have to learn many, many things so she can be an expert, and that’s very odd. I’ve taken classes in self-defense, learned to shoot a handgun, I’ve taken classes in law—not that I would ever be a lawyer—but just so I know enough to fake it out here. Without her, there are many things I never would have done.
U Is for Undertow is essentially about a boy who cries wolf.
Part of the story is about credibility—what happens if your credibility is gone and you know something. Who’s going to believe you? It just interested me to play with the issue of believability.
What’s your best hope for your body of work?
I would hope that the books survive time. Early in the series, I tried to make no time references, because I didn’t want them attached to world events or politics or movies or anything of the sort. Now I use some cultural references to help orient the reader. Obviously, I’m writing in 1988 in [U Is for Undertow]. Some readers don’t get that, so I try to lay in some indication so that they know where they are in time and space.
My prime interest is in the psychology of crime, not the economics of it, or whatever else people consider relevant. I have no ax to grind. I am not trying to persuade anybody of anything. What I’m looking at is the dark side of human nature, and that exists regardless of your standards or your values or your economic status.
In T Is for Trespass, Kinsey says she believes in the good in people, even though the headlines are full of evildoers. What’s your belief?
I believe in the good in people, and I am dismayed on a daily basis to discover the skunks among us. However, most of the people I know are just wonderful. I do trust that the good will prevail.
What has made you so successful?
I hope it is because I try to be honest, and I try not to sell anything. I just try to let the work take care of itself. I try to keep it fresh. I will not cheat. I will not take the lazy way out. I just won’t. That isn’t going to be fun for any of us if I get lazy. Maybe that’s part of why it’s so hard for me.
But you get joy out of being an author?
I do when it’s going well. Now, [my husband] Steve is a better observer of this than I am. He said there were months in writing U Is for Undertow when I was just happy. This is his favorite book. He’s always my first reader, and he loves this book.
I don’t think of myself as an author. I think of myself as a writer, because writing is what I do. I’m always taken aback when others refer to me as “famous” or a “celebrity.” What a weird idea. The concept has no real application. It doesn’t serve a writer to start thinking of herself in those terms because it interferes with the work. Writing is an internal process. Success is external and not something we can control in any event. I foster that disconnect because it keeps me grounded. Also humble, lovable and grateful. I am blessed.
What advice do you have for newer writers?
My big gripe about newer writers is they’re not willing to put the time in. Somebody’ll write one book and they’re asking me who my agent and my editor are, and I’m thinking, Don’t you worry, sweetheart, you’re not any good yet. Give yourself time to get better. Writing is really hard to master. You learn by failing over and over, but a lot of people don’t care for that, thanks. I always wish new writers the greatest good fortune. It’s a helluva journey—I’ll tell you that.
Reading Recommendations from Sue Grafton:
Double Indemnity and The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain
I love James M. Cain.
The Speed Queen by Stewart O’Nan
That’s a book [that makes me] think, Dammit—why didn’t I think of that? It’s just a wonderful book, very odd. Cracks me up. Here’s the premise: There’s a woman on death row for some hideous crime, you know not what, and she has sold the rights to her story about this murder to [an unnamed version of] Stephen King, who has sent her questions, and she is waiting to be executed. It’s told from her point of view. And you don’t know what the questions are. It’s just hysterical. He never breaks stride. He never misses a beat.
Void Moon by Michael Connelly
I like just about anything by Michael Connelly. [Void Moon is] some kind of caper. It’s a strong female character, and he just pulls it off. You never quite know why you get taken with a book.
My favorite writer is Elmore Leonard.
I love his work. I think he has such a sense of the way criminals think and the way they behave, and he has a fabulous ear for the way they talk. He himself is probably in his 80s, but his novels are just as fresh and clear. And that’s just good. You want people who have their own voice, and who just go about their business doing a fabulous job, and paying no attention to the rest of us.
Demolition Angel by Robert Crais
It’s got a strong woman character, and he’s writing about the L.A. bomb squad, so it’s nitty-gritty. It’s tough. It’s a good character and a good story. It’s one that just carries you along. I thought he did a fabulous job.

Stella Carrier Script Stories Law of Attraction Edition Script 23 Friday July 28, 2017
Stella Carrier Script Stories Law of Attraction Edition Script 23 Friday July 28, 2017
I Stella Carrier am so excited and elated. The time period is now February 7, 2021 and I just received great news via a letter that came to me in the mail. It turns out that I wrote a story under one of my unique pen names inspired by my interest in DJ’s. I like to listen to a variety of songs from various music genres and I discreetly write multiple stories inspired by my dreams. On the plus side, publishing the stories under unique pen names allows me the freedom to write in greater creativity of some of the stories inspired by some of my dreams. There are multiple music DJ’s who have helped inspire me; Armin Van Buuren, Tiesto, David Guetta etc. Anyhow, I receive a check today in the mail in the sum of 9800 dollars after taxes for one of the stories pertaining to multiple DJ’s representing various music genres. I am excited about seeing the money for this story and the good news that many people both across various parts of the United States and globally are enjoying this story.
Fortunately, despite the story’s popularity my anonymity from publishing various stories under unique pennames is safe. I fortunately followed through on the guidance gifted to me in one of the dreams I had by early 2018. The  dream went like this; I am walking in a brightly lit red and orange room with a large window showing a large sun and a beautiful color rainbow outside. I see two twin females waiting for me at a peach and green table nearby somehow by the orange and white dresses they are wearing but they are both wearing green ski masks over their face to conceal their identity from me. I somehow figure out that they are both in their late twenties but when I try to ask them for further identification they both patiently explain that they are both currently residing in a timeless dimension and they know from a past lifetime over 100 years ago when they were both friends to me as sisters but they have promised one of my female spirit guides that they will keep their identity secret from now in exchange for helping me but to just call them Thatra and Nerea.
Help me with what I ask, Thatra explains that they live in a world where there are music DJ’s as there are on earth and they specialize in this field as they were both singers in their most recent earth life before they crossed over to another world/dimension after 1940. After incarnating by the year 2000 in earth time on what they could only tell me is a timeless dimension they were allowed to still help multiple DJ’s and songwriters still living on earth from the timeless dimension that they now reside. Then both Thatra and Nerea get up to walk outside as they both advise me to keep listening to multiple DJ’s and allow myself to write some fiction stories inspired by their (the music DJs) creativity. I try to ask Thatra and Nerea if this means that it would also be a good idea for me to look into becoming a DJ in my free time as I enjoy listening to various songs from various music genres. Both women explain in unison that it is not their function to advise me of that but they could send my request to my celestial/heaven spirit ally team if I agree, I nod my head in agreement but before both women disappear Thatra explains that she has been telepathically sent a message that she is allowed to advise me to at least keep doing freestyle DJ song listings as signs and ideas can be more easily sent my way in relation to my question and to try harder to at least save up for a car before both women disappear into the outside in the dream and I wake up.
I follow this dream guidance to have a music DJ related story written under a unique pen name to have published by summer 2018. I go to deposit the 9800 dollar check in my Sun Trust account to at least balance the amount of savings I put in both the Sun Trust and Bank of America accounts, as I Stella Carrier also enjoy the good fortune of having put in over 2300 dollars after taxes in my Bank of America account just 5 weeks earlier.
I am also thrilled because I was also sent a check yesterday for 500 dollars after taxes after writing a freelance writing story on the various website articles that have inspired me and helped me to manifest a 119 pound body. Contrary to what some of my critics think I wasn’t doing to please my detractors, rather I did it to please myself as I had multiple dreams showing me achieving many of my career and money dreams but doing this in a thinner body. I believed even then that women of multiple body shapes, personality types, and physical appearances have the probability of achieving their career and money dreams successfully. It is just that I somehow was intuitively and logically aware that for my own destiny and stemming from my own personality that I would most likely achieve a multiple number of my career and money dreams by the time I manifested a thinner body weight even if it was well after I was already at a certain place of employment.
In addition to the 119 pound body that I Stella Carrier am blessed to have manifested by the year 2018, my amazing husband Rusty and I have visited and traveled to different places together. For instance, last summer when I met him and picked him up from his place of employment in College Park Maryland we traveled to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg Virginia and just last week we visited three places together in the Washington D.C. area that I spotted in Washingtonian magazine.
Last, but not least, I Stella Carrier have been gleaning knowledge and story writing ideas from various kindlebooks and books that I am blessed to have. For instance, a market watch article pertaining to women of the aspirational class was the seed for a dream I had that gave creation/life to a short story that I wrote under a pen name where I received a check for 800 dollars after taxes just last week after this particular story was published by June 2018.

I mark a new beginning in the book of my life and wisely use the free time I have been giving to rest and tune even deeper into various aspects of my life-spiritual, athletic goals such as walking more, balancing my writing time with some online courses I have enrolled in etc.
I am in the process of becoming more cool,level-headed, and wise when it comes to how I conduct myself around my current work colleagues and future coworkers as I am now logically and intuitively aware that some of them may follow me to where I may reside within 7 years from now or less regardless if I am a private sector andor a government/military worker/employee.
I am well provided for. I live in an abundant universe.

Coloma woman shares secret to weight-loss success: 'I walk every day - no excuses'

weight loss links for me to keep in mind
I have to credit Washingtonian magazine via the facebook feed for introducing me to this informative link. I am intrigued to research more into the weight loss idea mentioned in this article and I intend to save it in at least my online fitness logs and maybe additional places in my online logs as the idea mentioned in this article is workable even with my budget. I feel blessed to have come across a success story around this idea as it helps broaden my mind what is possible when it comes to losing weight on a budget. I was already having a bright and happy day before coming across this article as it pertains to Alex Schriver who works in what looks to be Public Affairs at Navy Yard. However, this article feels me with even more positive hope and spiritual faith as it pertains to a secret timeline/deadline I have set as an intention for myself to accomplish my weight loss goals.

Open Championship first-spherical final results

Open Championship first-spherical final results
SOUTHPORT, England — The wind off the Irish Sea pushed away the rain clouds and bathed Royal Birkdale in sunshine, Stars and Stripes.
The Open Championship began Thursday with an All-American flavor.
Jordan Spieth, chomping away on gum as he watched one particular putt just after a further pour into the center of the cup, labored some bunker magic of his personal late in the spherical to keep his card filled with only birdies and pars for a 5-less than sixty five.
The world’s top rated ten fared miserably at the U.S. Open with 6 missing the slice. Following 18 holes at Royal Birkdale, it truly is a unique tale. So did their grades go up at The Open?
Which players will need to keep their wits about them on Friday just to make it to Saturday? Which of the major lights have most to fear when the slice mark falls just after Spherical 2? Our writers make their picks for who to enjoy out for on Friday.
Brooks Koepka received the U.S. Open and then all but took a thirty day period off, together with a journey to Las Vegas. He marked his return to competitive golfing with a excellent sixty five, which place him straight back into competition at a significant.
2 Associated
U.S. Open winner Brooks Koepka, with no level of competition and barely any follow because capturing his first significant a thirty day period back, ran off three straight birdies and holed a tricky shot from a pot bunker for eagle on the par-5 seventeenth hole for a 5-less than sixty five.
Joining them was Matt Kuchar, who first endeared himself to these British enthusiasts as a 19-year-previous beginner in 1998 at Royal Birkdale. Kuchar tied the course history with a 29 on the entrance 9, only to fall into a regimen of pars the rest of the way. He however shot sixty five, his most effective score in a significant.
They had a one particular-shot lead about Paul Casey and Charl Schwartzel on a day that began horrible and finished with 39 players breaking par. The most significant dilemma just after a extensive day on the hyperlinks was what was in retailer for Friday, when higher winds and occasional showers have been in the forecast.
“I thought present day spherical was exceptionally important, as they all are,” Spieth claimed, atop the leaderboard at a significant for the first time because very last year’s Masters. “But given the forecast coming in, I thought you actually required to be in the red right now. You can unquestionably make up ground in a spherical tomorrow, and we will see it happen. But remaining able to kind of enjoy with photographs, or enjoy a minimal a lot more conservative since you will not try out to do far too much on a day like tomorrow, which is awesome and incredibly practical.”
Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy fall into that class.
Jordan Spieth had his most effective Open spherical to move into an early first-spherical lead at Royal Birkdale. Stuart Franklin/Getty Visuals
Johnson, the No. one participant who has not performed the weekend at a significant because The Open Championship very last year, managed only one particular birdie on a decent day for scoring and shot seventy one. McIlroy also shot seventy one and was relieved. Coming off three missed cuts in his earlier four gatherings, he was 5 about via 6 holes when his caddie gave him a pep converse. McIlroy shut with three birdies about the very last four holes to remain in the sport.
Phil Mickelson failed to make a birdie, the first time that has happened in a significant in five yrs, and shot seventy three.
Kuchar was the only one particular at sixty five who performed in the afternoon. The wind remained strong, even though the course was workable for all people who stayed out of bunkers and deep grass and who holed putts.
“I watched some of the golfing this early morning on Tv. It looked awfully demanding,” Kuchar claimed. “It looked like something less than par was likely to be a good score. Seemed like the later on your tee time, the superior draw you got. … For me, to get started my British Open with a 29 on the entrance 9 is a terrific way to get started.”
Charley Hoffman had the most effective get started of all, holing out from the rough on the daunting opening hole for an eagle. He was poised to join the leaders when he achieved 5 less than with a birdie on the fifteenth, only to drop photographs on the subsequent two holes. Hoffman shot 67 and was in a team that provided Ian Poulter and Rafa Cabrera Bello.
Defending winner Henrik Stenson, who performed with Spieth, had a seventy one. Stenson also performed with Spieth the first two rounds of the 2015 Masters, that the Texan received wire-to-wire, and understood what to hope.
“He was rolling it beautifully that week, and I will not assume it was that significantly guiding right now,” Stenson claimed.
But his most effective shot was with his ft in the sand. Spieth was in thick rough to the proper of the 16th fairway when his shot crept into the back of a pot bunker. Not only was the ball on a slight slope, the rake marks still left his ball involving two ridges.
“This is unsafe,” he claimed to his caddie.
He aimed to the proper of the hole to avoid it likely off the environmentally friendly on the other side and into a further bunker, and it came off flawlessly about ten ft away.
“That was brilliant,” have been his subsequent phrases to his caddie.
He designed the par putt — Spieth designed a lot of putts, picking up a two-putt birdie on the seventeenth and narrowly missing a seven-foot birdie putt on the very last. It was his most effective get started in a significant because he shot 66 at the Masters a year back. Spieth rated it amid the top rated five or 6 rounds he has at any time performed in a significant — not poor for someone who came near to the Grand Slam two yrs back.
“I couldn’t have completed much superior right now,” he claimed.
Royal Birkdale was much a lot more kind than it was 9 yrs back in raging wind and rain. The 146th Open began in great temperatures, a gentle rain and a strong wind. Mark O’Meara, a winner at Royal Birkdale in 1998 who is actively playing in his very last Open, strike the opening tee shot.
And then he strike a further one particular.
O’Meara’s first shot was lost in the gorse, he designed a quadruple-bogey 8 and was on his way to an eighty one. His threesome expected 18 photographs to enjoy that hole. But the temperature settled down a number of hrs later on, and the scorecards filled up with a lot of birdies and eagles.
Just not for McIlroy right up until late in the spherical, or Johnson and Mickelson all day.
“With the temperature we are anticipating tomorrow, I however experience I am in the golfing tournament,” McIlroy claimed. “If I can go out and enjoy a good, quality spherical of golfing in the early morning and try out to get in the clubhouse someplace close to even par, less than par, I will however be close to for the weekend.”

Love It! I absolutely adore this book. It has given me a new appreciation and a different point of view for the various types of art. I have discovered many new interests thanks to my art class and this book. Go to Amazon
I got a great deal on Amazon with this book from Myra Johnson who sold it to me. I took a chance that I could find a book on Amazon that I would have surely paid more for it at my college, new. This book is like new and had a code that the seller told me was like new. Great news for me. I can use this and I am glad to find great deals like this and help the seller out as well. It took trust, however I admit I questioned its value, but was able be emailed right away that I had nothing to worry about. Was that not service, now I ask you where else can you get such customer/seller relationship with a company like Amazon. Thanks Amazon for having exactly what I need, when I need it, at the right price and never disappointed. Go to Amazon
A good text for art history. I had this for my art history class. It gives a quick overview of several different art styles over the years throughout different countries. The emphasis does seem to be more on European and modern art, though. Almost the last half of the book seemed to be from the 1800's forward. Go to Amazon
I am so surprised how many errors are in this ... I am so surprised how many errors are in this book, considering they come out with a new edition every few years. About 50 errors when the text references previous illustrations and page number. Go to Amazon
Poor Quality I purchased this book new and have only used it a few times and the pages are coming loose from the bindings. Poor quality for how much you pay for the book, I would not expect it to be falling apart. So not only do I get to pay an outrageous price for the book in addition it will have no resale value for me to get some of my money back out of a book I will never again use. Go to Amazon
Art for All Decent book. Not as good as my old college text, but workable. Go to Amazon
Wallet Defender Its a text book so I will not review plot or characters. What I will say is that saving half the price of buying this at the university book store made it very interesting. Half the price and delivered right to my door without waiting in line for it. Go to Amazon
Five Stars great value for an overpriced college book Go to Amazon
Rented the book and it was in good shape. Good art book Five Stars Ok condition Five Stars i got the book as expected. though i was ... Book condition The book itself looks very good, no marks or anything for a rented book The book was in excellent condition no marks bent up pages etc worth the ... Four Stars

The 2017 NCAA Tournament has revealed a lot about the top NBA Draft prospects
Who’s impressed us through the first weekend, and who has a longer way to go? Plus, a Lonzo Ball argument.
The NCAA Tournament field has been sliced from 68 to 16, and gone are many of the top NBA Draft prospects we wanted to see. In that spirit, this week’s Flanns & Zillz focuses on our thoughts on the draft class after the first weekend of madness.
ZILLER: Just like most NBA writers, we're using the NCAA Tournament to cram on the top prospects for the 2017 draft, which is just three months away. But before we get into what happened over the weekend, let's discuss the two elephants not in the room: Markelle Fultz and Dennis Smith are two elite prospects whose teams didn't make the tournament.
Nothing Fultz did at Washington this season dropped him down the big boards. The Huskies were bad, but Fultz showcased exactly what put him atop mock drafts for a couple of years. In fact, he improved his stock by showing he could shoot the long ball. So many recent hyper-athletic point guards lacked that piece when entering the league. He proved he can shoot.
So Fultz missing the tournament shouldn't hurt his case, just as it didn't for Ben Simmons last year.
But the knock on Smith at N.C. State was that he lacked focus and intensity, and he didn't disprove that when the chips were down for the Wolfpack. He's smaller than Fultz and a worse shooter, and I think not reminding teams who makes him a top prospect here in March could cost him a few spots. Small guards tend to drop in the lottery without massive Marches.
What do you think about the fate of the prospects who missed the Madness?

FLANNERY: I think Markelle Fultz will be the No. 1 pick even though people will talk way too much about Lonzo Ball over the next few weeks. Fultz is the guy and it wouldn't surprise me if someone -- maybe Duke's Jayson Tatum or Kansas' Josh Jackson -- overtook Ball for the second spot. But let's not get too far ahead of things yet.
Smith is an enigma. He has major physical talent with obvious holes in his game that can be developed with more experience. That's the hope anyway. Talent evaluators would really like to see him spend another year in school and work on his point guard skills, but he's going to be a lottery pick regardless. NC State is also making a coaching change, so there's no reason for him to go back.
I would have liked to have seen more of Jonathan Isaac. I'm still not sure what to make of that guy.
ZILLER: I've moderated somewhat on the NBA age minimum, but Dennis Smith is one of those guys for which one-and-done did absolutely no benefit for anyone (not even Mark Gottfried, his now unemployed college coach). Smith is still will go super high in the lottery without any assurances he'll pan out.
Isaac did help himself -- he considered entering the 2016 NBA Draft through a loophole but went to Florida State instead -- by showing decent three-point range for the tall, skinny prospect. I am concerned about whether he can actually be a combo forward in today's NBA or whether he's a pure center. Small forwards usually aren't this tall, and defense could be a major concern if he's asked to play the wing instead of the pivot. He's also not much of a playmaker. He's intriguing, but he's also going to be compared to the more skilled Tatum and Jackson.
Should we talk about Tatum? I know we both love that dude.
FLANNERY: Tatum is really good. I watched a lot of his work in the ACC Tournament and came away impressed. He's not a great long-range shooter by any means, but he's got nice footwork and he can score in isolation. He just looks like an NBA player and the upside, as they say, is strong. Tatum's almost a year younger than Josh Jackson. That matters when we're talking about draft babies.
Jackson's the other guy who's almost certain to crack the top five. He's a live wire on the court, but he can really pass and he plays so hard. You like what you've seen from him?
ZILLER: He's an exciting player on the court, for sure. I especially enjoy his playmaking ability.
His off-the-court issues of late really can't be ignored, though. He admitted to kicking the car of his teammate's ex and is alleged to have hit it repeatedly in an apparent attempt to intimidate her after a public fight between her and Jackson's teammate. Teams are rightfully sensitive to off-the-court issues and so Jackson's spectacular on-court potential cannot and should not be seen in a vacuum. (Kansas in general is basically impossible for me to watch -- there's too much unspoken context and all of the credit for overcoming "distractions" makes me ill.)
Like you, I think Tatum absolutely looks the part of an NBA player and a modern NBA small forward, more specifically. In that sense he can slide right in. He had some spectacular blocks in Duke's Round 1 win and was the Blue Devils' best player in their Round 2 dismissal, but I do have a few questions about his face-up defense and playmaking.
I have far fewer questions here than I do about, say, Isaac. It seems inconceivable to me that one mediocre team will nab Tatum and one will grab Isaac and they'll both actually be competing in the NBA next year.
Speaking of Duke, do you think Luke Kennard or Grayson Allen are NBA players? And do you agree that Harry Giles would be served extremely well by staying at Duke, provided his family doesn't have financial pressures? (It's really unfortunate that, because the NCAA refuses to pay players, we have to mention that as an important consideration.)
FLANNERY: I like Kennard, am decidedly ehhhh on Allen, and think Giles should go back to school for another year. I long for the day when some kind of workable system can be set up that will allow pro prospects to develop on their own timeframe while enjoying the university life and not being exploited for their services. I actually think this may be attainable in our lifetime, but we'll see.
Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports
We should probably talk about Lonzo Ball now. I remain unconvinced that he's worthy of the hype. I think he's good, I just don't believe we're watching Jason Kidd 2.0 here. What do you make of him?
ZILLER: We are relatively young and we're talking about the NCAA maybe paying the athletes that collectively make them billions "in our lifetime." Our expectations are super low and super realistic.
I don't think Grayson Allen is an NBA player despite his shooting stroke. One-trick shooters need the right attitude to survive and thrive in the NBA (see: J.J. Redick) and Allen hasn't shown he has that.
However, we DO NOT agree on Lonzo Ball. I am all the way on this train.
How often do we see this combination of brash self-assurance and wily basketball IQ? It's rare, man. Kidd was a special, special player -- one of a kind despite our inclination to compare big pass-first point guards to him every third year. Ball is different. Ball is going to come into the league trying to score and pass and control the floor. In that way, I see him more like a Deron Williams type, but with more pizzazz and less weight.
I'm not saying Ball will be Curry, Harden or Westbrook. But we're in the golden era of these dual-threat fearless, playmaking point guards. Who better than Ball to carry the torch?
FLANNERY: I am willing to concede that I may be wrong here and that everyone else is correct when they see Ball as a transformative figure. Again, I'm not saying he'll be a bad pro. I think he'll be a good, even All-Star level player. I'm just not seeing greatness.
I know one thing: his father isn't going to make a damn bit of difference in where he goes and I refuse to get all worked about him one way or the other. Let the man have his 15 minutes.
I wrote last week about embracing the Tournament from a player perspective and a lot of those guys are out: Miles Bridges, Juwan Evans, Semi Ojeleye (my personal fav), Monte Morris, John Collins, Donovan Mitchell. Thank god for Kentucky. I need more De'Aaron Fox and Malik Monk in my life. I also want to see Lauri Markkanen against Gonzaga's front line. (That Xavier club looks primed for an upset, though.)
What else do you have your eye on this weekend?
ZILLER: The Kentucky kids and Markkanen are the biggest draws other than Ball, but I'd like to get a better sense of Justin Jackson, even though he's a junior. These UNC upperclassmen so often look better in college than they do in the league, but he'll go in the top 20 with decent expectations. We won't know if he can meet them until he gets to the league, but I need to see more.
Switching to the basketball itself for our final thoughts: any sense of who will win this thing?
FLANNERY: I haven't a clue, to be honest. I will note, as have many college basketball aficionados, that the seedings seem to have been thrown together by a team of circus seals. That said, half of my Final Four is already out (thanks Nova and Louisville) and I'm not feeling great about Arizona or Kentucky either. The most impressive teams I've seen have been Michigan, West Virginia, and Xavier. So, Carolina? Maybe?
You have any better feel for this?
ZILLER: UCLA is winning this. Let the legend of Lonzo begin!

Thoughts From My First United Polaris Experience
I’ll be completely honest: I haven’t been a big United Airlines fan over the years. It really started to go downhill in 2012 when I redeemed miles for an award on Swiss Airlines and something went wrong with the ticketing, which used to happen A LOT with United on partner awards. I was denied boarding and had to scramble to book on another carrier at my own expense. I was stonewalled by customer service and even senior management, and it was clear to me United didn’t really care about frequent flyers (I was United Platinum back then — from a status match, but still). Later that year I had a hair-raising experience with United’s (or, should I say Continental’s) gate agents at Newark and it made me think I’m better off sticking with American and Delta — imperfections and all.
However, over the past couple years, and most significantly with new CEO Oscar Munoz, United has tried to turn things around. This past year, I’ve flown United numerous times — Auckland (AKL) to San Francisco (SFO), Newark (EWR) to Brussels (BRU) and even a couple transcontinental p.s. flights. Most have been average-to-moderately enjoyable (except for that time United downgraded me from a paid first class ticket to economy on a regional jet because they downgraded the aircraft days in advance and decided not to tell me until I arrived at the airport).
Zach Honig is our resident United expert, so I let him cover that beat in general, but I was interested to check out the buzz around this new Polaris product. Was it really an innovative product, or simply United playing much-needed catch-up?
This week, I got to be the first passenger on the new plane…
…and, I also got to fly it from Chicago (ORD) to SFO on Monday’s preview flight. I can say it’s a huge improvement and a product that I would enjoy flying — especially on routes where the competition lags, like Newark (EWR) to Tel Aviv (TLV).
In short, it’s a smaller seat than American’s 77W or Delta’s A330/777LR, but it’s well designed and comfortable. Where the product really shines is in the soft product — the mattress pads, duvets, multiple pillows, pajamas, enhanced food offering, exclusive lounge and (hopefully) better service. Here’s a rundown of what I liked and didn’t like about the new product:
Pros
1. The Seat
One of the biggest highlights of the new Polaris product is the seat itself, a Zodiac seat exclusively designed for United. It’s 6’6″ in length (maybe a touch longer because I’m 6’7″ and just barely fit), so it isn’t the largest product out there. But for 99% of the population, it’ll be more than comfortable — especially since the blankets and mattress pads are wonderful (more on that later).
Each seat has aisle access, and the odd-numbered rows are the best because they’re most protected from the aisle — and they’re great for traveling couples. If you don’t want to see the person next to you, you can raise the electronic partition and keep it up — even for taxi, takeoff and landing. Rows 1 and 9 have larger footwells due to the bulkhead. My size-14 feet fit comfortably, and I could rotate them with ease — even in the non-bulkhead seats.
2. Design Elements
It’s the little things about a seat that can make all the difference. In United’s Polaris cabin on the 77W, there are some great design elements that simplify and enhance the customer experience. Some are visual, like the white Carrera marble-like composite as the side table. And then there’s the functional, like the bar that’s located just above the in-flight entertainment screen so you can hoist yourself up from the seat and don’t have to yank the person in front of you — it’s brilliant. (See United CEO Oscar Munoz put the bar to use in the photo below.)
3. The Lounge
The Polaris Lounge at Chicago O’Hare (ORD) is in a different league from your average United Club, and it’s a place I’d actually want to hang out. There are both buffet and a la carte dining options from famous Chicago chef Art Smith (try the fried chicken!). There are private pods you can reserve and even laundry service they do for you while you’re in the shower. The lounge is only for Polaris customers and those traveling in first or business on a Star Alliance partner, so hopefully it won’t experience the overcrowding that most airline lounges suffer from.
4. Air Vents
One feature that’s commonly left out of many wide-body aircraft is air vents. For passengers who warm or cool quickly, it’s so vital to be able to control your own section of the cabin. I was happy to see that United included individual air vents on the 77W. There’s something so nice about being able to adjust your environment — however small it may be.
5. The Food
Although we were only on a four-hour flight, United offered full meal service and everything was top notch. I highly recommend the Korean chicken noodle soup, which was so good that I drank the broth!
And the lobster mac and cheese and bite-size desserts were both great.
6. Large Footwells
One small point that could make a huge difference, especially for tall travelers like myself, is which seat you get when it comes to the footwell. The footwell in the bulkhead row of seats is significantly larger than that in other seats throughout the cabin. You can see the difference in the pictures below with my laptop as a comparison point in non-bulkhead and bulkhead footwells on the left and right, respectively.
If you have the choice, pick a bulkhead row for the footwell compartment.
7. Spacious Bathroom
The Polaris cabin is split up into two sections. At the nose of the aircraft, there are two lavs and in the middle of the cabin there are two more. The one bathroom in the middle of the cabin on the port side is very spacious, something I love as a tall traveler. If it’s available, I recommend using this lavatory on the 77W.
8. Solid In-Flight Entertainment
Because the flight was only four hours and there was plenty to do while we were in the air (like chowing down on the delicious food), I didn’t have much time to play with the in-flight entertainment system. However, the time that I did get to play with the 16-inch touchscreen was great. I was impressed with the IFE interface and the workability of it, which is a huge perk on long-haul flights.
9. Great Amenity Kit
One of the highlights of the Polaris product is the amenity kit. The Polaris amenity kit not only has some great contents, but its packaging is very appealing and can definitely be reused. Inside, you’ll get an eye mask, dental kit, pen, socks and Cowshed products, which were very nice. The kit was a nice surprise, as it contained more than just the lotions, toners and cleansers I’m used to seeing. Plus, all Polaris passengers get a very comfortable set of pajamas on the longest long-haul flights (most to Asia and the South Pacific).
10. The Cabin Amenities
One final major pro of the Polaris experience is what you’ll experience in the cabin. The updated blankets are extremely comfortable, and the mattress really feels like you could be sleeping in your bed at home. Plus, there are cooling gel pillows so you’ll fall asleep comfortable and wake up extra refreshed. I loved the experience.
Cons
1. No Storage
One major drawback of the Polaris cabin, in my opinion, is the severe lack of storage. There’s virtually no storage, including no place to put a laptop or book — just a small cubby that fits the amenity kit. If the seat could be updated in any way, I’d hope for more compartments to store my stuff.
2. Tight Squeeze
If you choose to sit in an odd-numbered row, be warned that the space to access the aisle is pretty tight. Because your counter space is closer to the aisle, there’s a mere 9 inches to get through. So if you’ve got a lot of junk in the trunk (like me), you might find it to be tight getting in and out.
3. Room for Beverage Improvement
I already talked about how impressed I was with the food service, but if there’s one part of catering that I think could be improved, it’s in the wine and Champagne department. On our short flight, we were served Perrier-Jouet Grand Brut, which was specially stocked (and a little disingenuous, in my opinion, because I got excited for a minute that United was ramping up the beverage component). However, that won’t be available on regular long-haul Polaris routes. I’m still waiting for a US carrier to take the lead on Champagne.
4. Poor Control Placement
The placement of seat controls are extra important — one slip of a finger or arm and you could be on your way to full recline. The control panel for the Polaris seat is located right where I was resting my elbow, so I ended up hitting it several times, moving my seat when I didn’t want to. This also happens to me on AA’s 767 where the controls are near the tray where I put my elbow and laptop. I do like the knob to move the seat back and forth, but maybe more if it were placed somewhere you may not hit it. Not a huge issue, just an observation.
United’s 77W and Its Future
Overall, I was very impressed with United’s new Polaris product. United’s 777-300ER is a great addition to its fleet, and the Polaris product is something the carrier should be proud of. Compared to the Boeing 777 variations offered by its domestic competitors, United offers not only a competitive seat, but a superior soft product that make it something I’d be excited to fly long-haul in the future.
During the preview flight festivities at ORD, I had the pleasure of meeting United’s CEO Oscar Munoz for the first time. He approached me and knew about TPG because his son and friends are big fans — he actually mentioned how amazed he was at how obsessed with points they are.
While Polaris is a marked improvement in United’s offerings, it’s clear that this is the vehicle in which Munoz is trying to rehabilitate United’s pride in the product, which he hopes will result in better customer service. He’s got an uphill battle, but he’s keenly aware. And unlike past United CEOs who were outwardly hostile to passengers and press, this is a new era of United and everyone there — from Managing Directors to lounge workers — was really excited about it. I really do hope that translates into a better customer experience across the board — even those flying in coach, which I admit is tight at 10-across.
Bottom Line
I’ve avoided United because I abhor seatmates and especially middle seats in business class. In the past, the food has been uninspired and the customer service has been lackluster, to say the least. So, however skeptical I was of it, this new product is good.
The employees seem proud, but United has a lot of other issues to fix before I would switch loyalty, especially adding more lie-flats on its domestic routes and offering better customer service — like my issue in Austin when I was downgraded to coach on a paid first-class ticket with no advance notice.
But, that being said, I am definitely looking forward to trying out Polaris in the wild (though I would definitely avoid the tight 10-across seating in economy!). I’m eyeing Newark (EWR) to Tel Aviv (TLV) since it’s a planned Polaris route and I’ve never been to Israel. Overall, I think that it’s a great improvement for United and I applaud the carrier for really innovating here!
Stay tuned to TPG for more United Polaris coverage in the days to come!
