I was thinking about the old LN1 character bios and remembered the line about the Twins being "born to be chefs". Assuming their not native to Nowhere, this would mean they had some violent tendencies before becoming residents, like it was their destiny.
This then made think about the end of tson ep 3 where Otto says the something like "Our world isn't the only world, let alone the predominant one".
All this made me realize that the worlds other than Nowhere may have been created by it (The Nowhere is implied to be sentient in it's own right) specifically to create concepts and injustices that could be used to warp and traumatize children, turning them into visitors and then into residents.
Thoughts?
Alright so this is a great question that I think leads to a much larger discussion about how the Nowhere operates. I would like to hear what other peeps think as well.
So, starting from the Chefs. Personally I always assumed that they are part of that group of characters who are from the Nowhere because of the way their description is worded (and also their baby pictures... this one is so cute lowkey...)
Tumblr media
--- But following your train of thought: considering what we know of the Nowhere, it seems to amplify certain characteristics of a person, usually the bad ones. Two kids who are a bit propense to get into fights in the waking world may very well become blood thirsty maniacs in the Nowhere.
Interestingly, the modification of traits does not only apply to personality but also the body -- and usually, the physical changes are in relation back to said traits. For example, the Teacher - someone who is known to be controlling - can extend her neck infinitely to look everywhere and have the ability to blink removed to make sure she's always watching. The Doctor, a perfectionist with tons of authority, is always looking down on people while also growing enormous to match his ego. So on and so forth, you can follow this reasoning for a large number of the Residents we meet.
I think other timelines derivating from the Nowhere is definitely a possibility, as we don't know much of how the universes work there.
The general theory of a multiverse irl is that no timeline has any specific weight or importance over others; they are all parallel no matter how different, with no timeline being "the real one". This is if we view the Nowhere under the lens of it being a separate dimension. In TSON, the Nowhere is kind of implied to be sucking the people most vulnerable to it right in, so perhaps the idea Otto has of it the predominant world stems from the fact that he can't explain his fascination with it... or from a real, genuine desire to somehow "return" to the original land, if that's where the other timelines originated from.
HOWEVER, I would like to offer an alternative perspective on this --- based on what I found out during my research on the Ladies. Yup we're going there again
Rather than the characters themselves, this time I'm going to refer to a symbolism that is very prominent in their lore: Buddhism. More specifically the references to the six planes of existance, and how those can be tied back to Little Nights in a loose way. As stated in this site:
" The six realms of rebirth are a schema in which beings are reborn according to the kind of life they lived. [...] The animal realm, in which inhabitants are driven by basic needs, is one of the three “lower” realms. The other two are the hell realm, a place of constant suffering and torment, and the realm of the hungry ghosts, grasping beings who are never satisfied. The three “higher” realms are the human realm [...] the demigod realm [...] and the god realm, where beings enjoy a life of pleasure. It’s important to note that some Buddhists view the realms as literally real, while others interpret them psychologically as metaphors for the emotional states of the human condition. "
(Click on the link to read the whole thing; I only highlighted the parts I think are relevant to this conversation :] )
What I believe specifically relates back to the Nowhere are the three lower realms, from which the place itself may be loosely inspired by because of how its inhabitants are described.
Tumblr media
All of these are things we see in Little Nights from various Residents, depending on the social class and place. It is important to note that while these realms are placed in different hierarchies due to quality of life, they all cohexist together without necessarily being more important than each other as they all have the same purpose in the end.
If the worlds of Little Nights operate in a similar way, then what we're looking at is not really a case of dimension hopping, but rather a passage from a plane of existance to the next. A forced one at that, at least in the case of Noone.
Now, considering Otto's assumption, the idea of the Nowhere being a predominant realm only popped up because he was trying to wrap his head around it and how Noone felt, but to tell you the truth, it is a rather baseless assumption considering he's never been there and is only experiencing it in a very limited way. However... considering how many children from different places in time and space have experienced the Nowhere, sometimes even simultaneously, I wouldn't say that it's completely wrong to assume that the place might be the "original plane of existance".
Now. Reflecting on what you said at the very end, I would like to ask a question back: do you think the Nowhere is, hypothetically, only capable of bringing out the worst in people inherently? Or is it only acting this way because humanity itself is more easily conditioned to fall victim to their bad traits?
I've been recently thinking about it because of the Maw. The writer of Little Nightmares, Mr. Mervik, has stated multiple times over the years that the place has not always been the way that it is; at the same time, he also said that it was not man made, but rather created by collective hunger/desire to be fed. These two things don't make sense together unless you assume the Maw was not originally born for the Guests and the whole cannibal business, but rather from a desire of shelter. A need to be fed. Which is not inherently a bad thing -- and it would explain why the structure itself is so largely built to house so many people, and why children still feel relatively safe in it to this day.
So I find myself thinking that perhaps, the Maw degenerated overtime because the people inside of it (cough its leaders cough) did. And if this is the case for the Maw, who's to say it's not the same for other places? The Nest, for example? The School, the Hospital... etc. But. It is also true that the creatures who inhabit the Nowhere (the Ferryman, the North Wind, the Flesh...) all seem to have their own interests and destructive amusement more at heart than anything. If these creatures are what move the large of the Nowhere (which I guess they are considering the eye symbol is all over the goddman place), then the human will can't really do much.
That being said, I am wondering currently if it could be possible for the Nowhere to bring out something good from a person in the right situation. At the same time, the hopes are incredibly slim. Nonexistent, actually, but it's nice to think about hypothetics.

It’s over isn’t it? (Spiderman Homecoming AU background)
Hello everyone, Mr.E here with a short little side story involving one of the au im currently obsessed with. At the request of my partner in crime @hains-mae (Who made me an amazing nova picture THANK YOU MAE!) I decided to return the favor by writing an small angsty tomstar chapter (she loves her angst)
Some background. We really put a lot of work and ideas into the spiderman homecoming au. I mean i wish i could write it all because there’s so much of it but one of the things we added from canon was that Tom and Star were dating and then they broke up in this universe. This chapter will explain a bit of their background and some of the ideas we came up with. This is not a full marvel cinematic universe. There’s a lot of changes we did. Tom and Star are 14 15 as is Marco. Tom is this universe’s Tony Stark but more from the armored adventures. that teenage Tony and Iron Man is a hero but is more considered to be Tom’s bodyguard than people being aware Tom is the hero.
This takes place before most of the AU when Tom has decided to really buckle down and do what he feels he needs to do at any cost.
I hope you enjoy it! thank you mae for everything and have an amazing weekend!
“TOOOOOOM! You're not answering the door again! Or your phone! Or even the rocks I hurl through your window when I want attention” Star shouted as she descended down the stairs.
She took a calming breath, trying to ignore the empty silence that seemed to fill the mansion's halls as she inched closer to her boyfriend's workshop.
Tom was a busy guy even if he was just 15 years old. Heir to the most prolific manufacturing company, popular among the various social groups of the city and naturally inventor in his spare time, he kept himself occupied though Star could never figure out if it was on purpose or not.
Star let out a tense sigh: Things had been rough between them lately. His annual over seas trip had changed something and what was once a slightly strained yet flirtatious relationship became aloof and distant.
Star briefly wondered if it was due to her current 'social' status or some rich brat that convinced Tom to shift his attention elsewhere. She doubt that would sway Tom given their long, colorful history with each other but anything was possible.
Star knew Tom as long as she could remember: The forced meetings and play dates, the childish rivalries , their standoffish attitudes towards one another. In retrospect not the healthiest relationship for children but Star Butterfly of Mewni Electronics refused to socialize with many of the other well off children. They were just insufferable! They were greedy and annoying, lazy and undriven. Playing with them boiled down to standing in place and watching television. No one wanted to play fort or war or hacker! Boring and uninterested. Tom (and Patricia) were only spared this distaste due to her parents fear that lack of social interaction would have adverse effect on the heir to the throne. Er company.
Not Star was willing to be the social butterfly at the moment.
She had to admit sometimes she missed her cozy apartment in midtown and the posh, easy living of being the child of a wealthy company but she knew it was a fleeting homesickness. She knew if had she gone back and resumed the life she tricked her way out of, she would quickly succumb to boredom and wanderlust.
No, living with her 'Uncle' Glossaryck in their humble yet well kept middle class home was preferred.
Star was shaken out of her thoughts by the dull rhythmic hammering of metal on metal.
Star continued her way towards a familiar door tucked in the back far corner of the garage, a hastily written sign with a cartoonish skull sticking its tongue out at her warned to 'Keep out'
Star rolled her eyes as she twisted the knob and frowned when it refused to budge. She sighed tiredly, fishing out her cell phone and connected it to the keypad with a cable. The phone cackled with an electronic scoff as the keypad flashes a welcoming green and the door slides open.
“I keep telling him” Star mocked under her breath “Change your software, change your software. There are serious vulnerabilities in version 4.53 but nooooo I'm Tom, I know everything despite the fact I can't even code java!”
Star whistled appreciatively at the sight of Tom angrily yet hypnotically smashing his hammer against a rough shaped metal piece.
“Whoa, is this your Halloween costume?” Star teased gently.
Tom nearly jumped out of his skin, whirling around with the hammer raised only find his girlfriend staring at him questioningly.
“Oh hi Star.” He panted, dropping the tool on a nearby cart haphazardly “I didn't hear you come in.”
“Well with all that ruckus...”
“Or inviting you.”
Star frowned, her anger slowly simmering to a boil as her boyfriend covered the strangely shaped pieces of metal with a sheet.
“Well” Star answered with barely controlled anger “I thought it be nice to see you. You know? My boyfriend.”
Tom fidgeted guiltily but his face remained indifferent “Well I've been busy.”
“No” Star cut in at once, furiously slamming the container full of food she brought him onto a nearby table “I know when you're busy. You've been avoiding me and I think it's high time I found out why.”
“Star” Tom began wearily “you don't understand.”
“No I don't” she shot back “That's the problem. Stop treating me like I can't help or I don't know what's going on!”
“You don't know what's going on!” Tom growled “You need to stop thinking of yourself!”
“Myself?” Star scoffed “I'm not the one whose locked up in a room working on some hunk of junk project!”
“How did you even break in here?” Tom rubbed his eyes tiredly “my security system is...”
“A joke” Star finished “I could break into it with my eyes closed and listening to J-pop. In fact I did.”
“You broke into my...?” Tom clenched his fist “You shouldn't be doing that Star. That's illegal”
“When have you ever cared about that? If you just let me write you a security program....”
“Enough Star, we'll talk about this later! I don't have time to deal with your hobbies!”
Star bit her lip.
“You know what?” Star angrily huffed “Don't worry about later. We're done. Bye Tom!”
Tom sighed, watching Star race out the door. He wanted to chase after her but purpose called to him. He knew she meant well but her computer software hadn't been tested and what he was doing was far too important to be guarded by some buggy program.
Tom lifted the finished sleek sliver mask, his face reflected in its shiny surface: Determined and fierce.
“Alright” Tom muttered to himself “Iron Man Suit Mark 1.0 prepped and ready for testing”

LOADING INFORMATION ON MAYDAY’S LEAD VOCAL, LEAD DANCE UTADA HIKARI…
IDOL DETAILS
STAGENAME: N/A CURRENT AGE: 22 DEBUT AGE: 20 TRAINEE SINCE AGE: 19 COMPANY: Midas ETC: first debuted in Japan and received moderate attention.
IDOL IMAGE
maybe it’s the fire in her eyes, or the goosebumps on her skin after a performance that indicate a job well done. maybe it all comes from the nickname those at the company gave her back in the day, midas’ dalmatian, thanks to the pattern of bruises that speckled her shins and calves after her grueling amounts of dance practices she’d accumulated over the years. it’s why the company sought out a “secret weapon” persona for her for the future — because she was locked, loaded and aimed to fire hard at the hearts of many; ready to shock the company’s stans into a new trance, a new realization of what the meaning talented should be defined as. hikari has grown far more confident with herself over the years, and it’s exactly what midas was aiming for in her image: they want a girl who is invigorating, inviting, fresh: someone who exudes confidence, but in a way that is humbled from her time as a trainee — an idol that fans can watch blossom into the star she was meant to be.
hikari doesn’t know the inner workings of how aegyo or forced cuteness is really supposed to work, or how people can seriously do it without feeling dirty afterwards. some of the inner workings of being an idol to be puzzle her, such as having to act such a level of cringe-worthy cute that she’s just not capable of it at all. despite numerous people who try to show her how, it’s so off putting that hikari has become somewhat known within the company as the girl incapable of being cute on cue. her cuteness comes naturally, organically in the form of her pure joy, not something she’s able to produce on the spot for others’ entertainment. fans find her lack of forced cuteness still charming, as she makes up for it with her strong willed, professional and determined-to-succeed persona instead.
IDOL HISTORY
she is raised on her mothers mariya takeuchi vinyls and her fathers suo masayuki vcr tapes, your typical run of the mill millennial child. her eyes are wide and always curious, a girl who becomes somewhat famous within her own family for the amount of time she can stare up at all of her aunts and uncles without blinking. her brother gets jealous often when he’s given the older child treatment, and it’s safe to say that hikari grows up the favorite. kiyoshi, almost half a decade older than his sister, grows to become somewhat protective over the younger girl and grows out of his childish stage pretty quickly.
both utada siblings develop strong admirations for their parents’ favorite 80s artists they hear every afternoon on their father’s record player; kiyoshi begins to play his first instrument, the guitar, when he enters middle school and hikari, infatuated with all the trendy female pop singers of the early 2000s, adores utada hikaru and kwon boa like they’re her two older sisters who hold her hand through the rocky terrain of adolescence and teenage-hood.
boa’s popularity in japan played a major influence on hikari’s decision to try out for osaka’s own nmb48 in 2010 at only thirteen years old. love & honesty, though released in 2004, was an album hikari held close to her heart, and proving herself to be enough, was able to debut in 2011. as one of the younger members of the group, hikari never garnered too much attention, and her performance skills were far from advanced at such a young age. it had been her passion she’d witnessed from her own pop stars that fueled her drive, but in 2012, decided to graduate from nmb48 to focus on high school and her extracurriculars, rather than being a “background dancer” for girls she knew would out-success her.
the growing wave of korean music in japan, along with hikari’s adoration for boa, inspired her to begin korean lessons in high school. drawn to the language and its relatively similar grammar pattern to her native tongue, hikari began to set her sights on the prospects of international relations for college when she’d found her knack for the language. she was a jack of all trades: she loved pop culture, loved dancing and performing, but also understood the necessity for cooperation between the two nations.
open auditions for midas media in tokyo in 2016 were enough to garner then-twenty year old hikari’s attention. already a fan of the company’s debuted groups, the now matured hikari evolved from her earlier years of mediocre dancing to boa’s earlier discography to a midas mashup of their four groups. not only did had her dancing skills grown far more polished thanks to her time as her high school’s dance crew captain, her singing skills did, as well.
“you speak very good korean, hikari-ssi,” the judges nod in approval to her once her performance has concluded; hikari blushes, flustered, anxious, dazed, everything at once. she feels shy speaking a foreign language when her parents have come with her to tokyo to offer their support for her, smiling from the sidelines, but she keeps telling herself to focus — this is your moment. the judges don’t seem to notice, ironically appearing far more impressed by hikari’s facade of confidence instead. “what are your hopes for the future?”
hikari pauses to register what they’ve asked, staring momentarily to let her brain buzz before conjuring a simple answer. “my hopes,” she begins, “are to bring people together. through my performance.”
and it certainly does. the good news comes in the form of a phone call a few weeks following that leaves her stomach twisted for a good few hours following. a few of her friends offer to take her out after she texts the group chat that the company hopes for hikari to begin her contract at her earliest convenience. when she begins, hikari finds quickly how intense her training is, and wonders if it’s perhaps due to her nationality. in reality, she finds out, is being shaped to be the company’s next “secret weapon” — expected to excel in both singing and dancing — for their next future girl group. the amount of pressure put on her to work hard, not only training to be a performer, but also to improve her korean and her integration to korean life, stuns her. it’s a brutal wake up call from what she’d been expecting considering her past experience in osaka, but she loves a challenge. the days she wants to quit weigh themselves out with the days she pushes herself to work harder than any other trainee by staying longer to prove herself capable, worth it. hikari thinks with her head, a decision she makes to keep herself out of any drama or potential chances of messing things up. the stakes are higher for her now, especially being from japan — there would be nothing she regretted more in life than a plane ride home if she let herself fall mentally. walls carefully crafted and mind focused, hikari centers herself to be her absolute best, and prove to her company that the effort was worth it.
and she works hard at it, really — it’s an intense year, but in retrospect, she’s glad it was only that long (she’d met a lot of girls along the way who had been forced into limbo for much longer and just couldn’t bear it; she couldn’t blame them, she would’ve done the same). the group she had found out a little more than half a year into her training period, one she was intended as a final member for, came and went as fast as the executives in the company had mentioned it. it was disheartening to say the least and brought upon immense highs and lows that hikari wasn’t sure would in the end help her sink or swim.
at the end of the day, mayday is enough. much of the music and its choreography doesn’t challenge her enough, wishing her company could at least give her more to work with. but it’s been a long three years and she’s still here, still reminding herself that hard work does pay off, and that she’s truly one of the lucky ones.
