A page of test mixes from my strathmore watercolor journal-here i'm talking about the four strips of color on the left, the dark gray "bricks" at the top, and the gray wash on the right. The convenience color (ie, pre-mixed) Payne's Gray is common on watercolor palettes. Riffing on this name, watercolorist Jane Blundell calls her mixture of ultramarine and burnt sienna Jane's Grey. I don't have burnt sienna, but i've been wanting to see what i could do with my french ultramarine blue and my red iron oxide. I like the range i get, though i don't know whether i will try to whip up a pre-mixed batch to keep on my palette. Since red iron oxide is somewhat warmer than burnt sienna, and because i have had Star Trek TNG in my head for a bit, i thought i would call it "Jane's Grey, hot." :P I'm sure Picard would materialize a batch right away if he thought of it... Anyway, sorry for the lame Star Trek/watercolor mash-up, and apologies for the bad picture. It was nice to finally test it out though.
