being a self-taught artist with no formal training is having done art seriously since you were a young teenager and only finding out that you’re supposed to do warm up sketches every time you’re about to work on serious art when you’re fuckin twenty-five

Somewhat belated notice, but I have a giant 30% off Spring Sale on my original watercolor paintings up on etsy! www.etsy.com/shop/CallePaints
Support a small-time artist! My freelance grading is about to end for the summer, so until something else comes up art sales and commissions are my main source of income this summer. And if you don’t want originals, there is always my prints and other art products on Redbubble: https://www.redbubble.com/people/vikingsbooksetc/portfolio

Nebula Explorer by Callego
Really like how this one turned out! First time trying this sort of nebula scene--love it, and plan on doing more. Have a video of my process, will hopefully finally get around to making a YouTube channel for that sort of thing... Also, prints for sale on Deviantart, soon from Redbubble (vikingsbooksetc), and original eventually on Etsy (CallePaints).

Ann Leckie’s new book, The Raven Tower, is coming out on February 26th, and the Imperial Radch fandom has gotten together again to do another lead-up event to the release!
Each day, fans are encouraged to post work under the #AL Raven Tower tag. As a reminder, most people make fanart and fanfiction, but any medium is welcome!
Additionally, The Raven Tower is set in a shared universe with several previously published works of short fiction that are available to read for free online! While the universe is shared, none of the characters or plot from The Raven Tower are present, but they may be good inspiration or jumping off points for some of the events! Also they are just good stories! Ann wrote them! Go read:
The God of Au
Marsh Gods
The Nalendar
The Unknown God
You can also listen to the first five minutes of The Raven Tower here!
On to the event days:
Saturday: February 23rd: The God of Alternate Universes (AU Day) - The fandom favorite day re-imagined: Create an AU for something in Leckie’s canon! Imperial Radch characters, Provenance characters, short fiction characters or anything else you can think of are fair game for re-imagining or crossovers. Maybe put some Radch Gods in the Godsverse? Maybe make Godsverse Gods as Radchaai ships? Maybe something totally different. (Hey we can always use another coffee shop AU). Go nuts!
Sunday, February 24th: Build a God Day - Gods are powered by belief, so why not make your own? Imagine a God in Leckie’s Godverse (Or the Radch, who am I to tell you God isn’t like a duck?). These can also be serious or silly (Propriety Turtle is probably worshipped somewhere at this point and don’t get us started on the Butter God).
Monday, Feb 25th: Only the Gods Know What Comes (Predictions Day) - The Gods probably have no better ideas than you do about what The Raven Tower will contain, but this is the day to share your predictions and hopes for what the new novel will be about. These can be serious or silly! Anything at all! Text wall us! Draw some Gods! Draw some humans! Draw Dlique coming back to life in the middle of The Raven Tower (Don’t actually do that–ok maybe but listen, I have this theory…) One very important disclaimer though: if you’ve read an ARC do not post stuff on this day! Or if you have, only post what your thoughts were before you read it!
Tuesday, February 26th: Release day! Spend the day reading! Liveblogging your reading is encouraged, but if you do so, please use the #AL Raven Tower Spoilers tag. The general #AL Raven Tower tag is okay for posts that do not contain spoilers, but please be mindful of other readers for the first few weeks especially and tag! If there is anything you wish to post but do not wish Ann Leckie to see, she encourages the use of the #Not for AL tag, which she blacklists.
Happy Creating!

Another Goblin Week sketch--glad I’ve gotten at least a couple out. Maybe another tomorrow (which I think is the last day). Learning a lot by restricting myself to around 4-5 levels of value with these recent sketches--hope I can bring a stronger sense of composition to my watercolors after this.

Argh, nearly missed Goblin Week this year--hopefully this won’t be my only one this year, but it might be, we’ll see.

For Valentines this year I decided to do some small sketches inspired by fairy tales. Have only had time for a Rapunzel one and a West of Moon one, but keep in mind that I also have other Viking and Valkyrie Valentine’s Day cards and prints available on my Redbubble shop. On Redbubble find me under vikingsbooksetc, and on Instagram/Etsy find me under CallePaints. Redbubble orders would need to be made soon, since manufacturing time can unexpectedly delay things!

Precious Star by Callego
One of my prints available on Redbubble now! This is my favorite from this year’s Inktober.
Redbubble seems to be having sales almost every day this month, so good time to get stuff! Be warned that it does take time for them to manufacture products, so it’s getting to a point where Xmas delivery could be problematic...

Note
The late Nick Howe had us use the Donaldson prose translation as a crib, since we were already getting the verse in the original and the various verse translations didn’t preserve the appositive style as well. I haven’t really looked into the translations myself for a long time. Gosh, this has me wanting to brush up on my Old English...
Do you have a favourite translation of Beowulf?
Hello and thank you for the question.
The answer would depend on which language you mean but I will assume you mean English translation.
The most common version is the Heaney translation but I do not like it as he puts too much of his own emphasis on obscure or contentious points and his dedication to the poetic means we often lose details for the sake of artistic licence.
Another popular translation is JRR Tolkien (for obvious reasons) but again, it has issues and Tolkien himself was not best pleased with his own work, believing that translating it into prose caused the original to lose something.
One very good prose translation is by Michael Swanton. It has the Old English mirrored on the opposite page to the translation, is very accurate and considered in approach. It is readable but quite true.
My personal favourite would probably be the one by Frederick Rebsamen. I feel it captures the soul and tone of the original brilliantly. It has a rough authenticity and feels very close to the original, maybe because he has taken the novel approach of translating into modern language but still retaining the rules of the original verse.
I hope that helps and would love to hear others’ opinions!
Til års og fred, @hedendom

The Old Man and the Sea Giant by Callego
After spending way more time grading and trying to sort out a bunch of bureaucratic stuff (still not entirely resolved) than I would have liked, I gave myself half a day to try painting something really large for the first time--so here is my first 22x30 inch watercolor. Tried to keep things simple, and feel pretty good about it, even if there is a lot of fiddling I’d like to do.
Sorry for no inktober posts lately, life is insane right now. Posting more regularly on Instagram, but will get back to putting things up here soon.
