if Madmartigan ever comes back in the show, i know for a FACT that Airk won’t welcome him the way Kit would.

Kit would go RUNNING towards Mad, Airk won’t. you can’t tell me he would, there is NO WAY he would. Airk only know rejection from all parental figures besides Kase Jorgen, I do not believe that he would be excited if his father comes back. especially AFTER he left them. nope i would not believe it.

Chapter 2: Effigies We Immolate

Summary: Jade and Kit hurry back to their home, where they meet a released prisoner, get into a firefight with the mysterious mercenaries, and find two stragglers from the civilian evacuation.

[Another old chapter; reposting for archival purposes/procrastination!]

Chapter 2 shifts us fully into the plot of Like Constellations: GaleForce is attacking, Kit and Jade have to jump into their mechs to try to fight back, and we're introduced to (almost all) the rest of the core cast.

I was excited to try the perspective shift to (mostly) Kit for this chapter, and I think it worked well. In particular, it was fun - and I think important - to write her perspective on the events of chapter 1. It's particularly valuable to be clear that she was willing to shoot Jade, but not trying to kill her. It tells us a bit about her determination.

This is the first chapter where I have a really extended action sequence. I think it moves ok; I'm still figuring out (13 chapters later) how much is too much, how to work the pacing, keep everything clear, etc. But for this chapter we're locked into Kit's perspective for the action, so that made it a little easier for me to write (and hopefully not too strange to read).

The big thing I discovered that I loved in this chapter, though, was turning action into character expression. I really liked having Kit and Jade forget to use private radio channels; having Kit tell Jade to "be safe;" Kit's resistance to having Elora in her mech with her (and the humor of them bouncing off each other was fun). I had (and always have) a really good time writing Boorman, as well. He's just a fun character to play with. The introduction of Elora and Graydon works pretty well, I think, even if I never bother to explain where the heck Graydon comes from.

(My personal favorite bit in this chapter is probably "'Right. And…Jade Claymore? I think we got introduced last night?' Graydon asks. Kit points her pistol at him again.")

This chapter does have the most loving mockery of Willow the show in the fic, probably - I couldn't resist the chance to do a bit with Jorgen Kase, and I will never pass up a chance to make gentle (loving!) fun of the Asleeni "moons" system of telling time. (Are they months?! Are they not?! When you're going past a couple dozen of them why not just say years?! I do not know how long 200 months is, this information is not helpful to me!!)

It also has the first hints of darker content. A mech story is almost inevitably a story about war, and while I didn't want to start chapter 2 with, like, bodies in the rubble, I did want to show that there's a real conflict going on with a real cost. The Oh Hellos song that comes here, "Torches," is also about violence and cycles of fear/retribution. Hence the somewhat ham-handed imagery of the tree and the ruined building.

Note on the callsigns bit: a long time after writing it I suddenly got worried that Tony Revolori might be the same height as Ruby Cruz. Fortunately 1) it looks like he's taller, 2) I don't care, 3) I feel we've agreed as a fandom that Kit is the shortie, and that energy is important. :P
