The Dream: The C6 was introduced when I was still in elementary school. I fell in love the design immediately. It was the "poster car" of my childhood. I still remember the moment I saw my first one on the road. It was a LeMans Blue coupe and I thought I had just seen a celebrity. In high school, my cousin leased a 2008 Z51 coupe in the newly-introduced Jetstream Blue. I drove it to prom my junior year. I knew in that moment how badly I had to have one. I got a part time job and started saving.
The Car: I've been watching the Grand Sport market for a couple of years now. The options I absolutely had to have were Jetstream Blue, 3LT, and a manual transmission. I figured it would be a tough search. I wanted a Grand Sport for the wide fenders and removable top, which took out a lot of cars already. Jetstream Blue narrowed the search to two years and a manual transmission narrowed it even further. I didn't realize how low JSB production numbers were until I started researching. These are not easy cars to find. I was beginning to think I would never find the car I wanted at a reasonable price. Then, while browsing Cragslist via Auto Tempest one evening, it finally happened. I stumbled upon the perfect car at great price. It had all the options I wanted and more. I knew I eventually wanted headers and exhaust on whatever car I found and this one already had those installed. It even has the Haltech air intake and brand new Continental tires. The car had just been posted and I was the first person to contact the seller. I knew I was taking a risk buying a car sight unseen from across the country, but I didn't want to let this one get away.
The car arrived this week and it's better than I could have imagined. It has been cared for extremely well it's entire life. The paint is in excellent shape and the interior looks barely used. It has 42k miles but would pass for a 10k mile car without question. Everything on the car is tight and there isn't a squeak or rattle anywhere - not even the top. It drives like brand new. The headers and exhaust sound great; although the drone is quite bad and I have a separate thread addressing that now. I've put 500 miles on it this week getting to know it and having a blast. Every time I walk up to the car, I can't believe it's happening. It's really mine. I did it.
The Corvette Forum: This Forum was instrumental in the purchase of this car. I reached out just after I found it to see if anyone would be willing to check the car out for me. I was quickly notified by two members of this forum who, without their help, I would have never been able to purchase the car. One knew the car and helped me get financing. The other not only knew the car, but kenw the previous owner and drove it many miles. The kind of help is priceless and I'm very thankful.
Insurance: Insurance surprised me the most. I figured being a young buyer of a fast car would be bad news. But as I've learned, Corvettes are very low risk cars from an insurance perspective. So I got some pretty reasonable quotes. The best quote was from Adam Boca at the Corvette Museum. He beat the next best rate by $50 a month. I was thrilled. If anyone is looking for insurance, give Adam a shout!
Shipping: The only piece left to the puzzle was shipping. The car was in WA, a far cry from KY. Work is just too busy in the summer for me to take the time necessary to fly out and drive the car back. I knew I had to have it shipped and I knew I wanted enclosed. I tried reaching out to some of the bigger names and the prices just weren't reasonable to get the car to my part of the world. Some wouldn't even quote to KY because they never travel routes through here. I had heard horror stories about going through brokers but I decided to go ahead and bite the bullet. I searched through threads and threads and threads on this Forum, seeing who members had used in the past. I came across Philam Transport who has been used here a few times. I called and the response was super quick. Gilbert from Philam was excellent. He actually logged me on to his personal account on Central Dispatch so I could see how his business works. We put my shipment out for bid and it was won at a very reasonable $1500 by OK Auto Carriers. OK Auto picked up the car on time and delivered it to me eight days later from WA. When the trailer opened, I noticed my car wrapped in plastic - a very professional touch. On the bottom rack was a Rolls Royce, an Aston Martin, and a Porsche 911, so I could tell they were no strangers to caring for valuable cars. My car was delivered perfectly and the driver was very nice.
Mods: The car already had headers, x pipe, exhaust, and an intake when I bought it. This week, I installed the Morimoto red lens LED tail lights. Those are excellent units. I've ordered the Sony XAV-AX5000 head unit and a rear camera which are getting installed this week. I've also ordered LED fog, license plate, rear, and marker lights from Vette Lights. Those will be installed this week as well. After changing out the mufflers for something more friendly, I think I'll be done. But as we all know, modding is a disease and the only cure is more mods...
