my favourite thing about the always sunny podcast is listening to rcg all say something extremely neurodivergent and then agree amongst themselves and convince themselves its completely normal
#and to be clear im not diagnosing them charlie said he wasn't neurotypical#like deadass i think. the reason some of their writers just completely botch the gang's motivations/dialogue sometimes is bc at their core#these characters are all. SO autistic. which inevitably leads to them being misunderstood by others outside their group#whether rcg realizes it or not they inject this very specific vibe of neurodivergence into the gang#and its why they will just. argue over inconsequential details bc they Need to be understood completely#they can't just drop it unless they are crystal fucking clear#imo the biggest mistake other writers make is thinking that the gang is completely desensitized when its more like#they just don't react the way you would expect#which is often... adjacent to that but still distinct. and its trauma that influences this as well#the gang does not believe they themselves are 'bad people'. theyre most often oblivious to the fact that the things they do are insane#rob saying he doesnt pick up on social cues and then going on to argue in circles with glenn#i dont think last week was anything crazy but i think. rob doesn't know when to let up. which is a problem that *i* have#and while it comes across as being confrontational in an 'im right youre wrong' way i dont think its driven by ego here#just like with how as they said mac and dennis are making up while chucking bread rolls at each other#on both sides its frustration at being misunderstood#but they are all similar enough that even if they disagree over small details theyre usually on the same page. and this can be beneficial!!#thats the conclusion of the ep!!!! whether its suggesting smoking to cancel out the toxic apple skin or suggesting words u cant think of#glenn said he was upset about feeling misrepresented and picked on#dennis gets angry for those exact reasons in.... ALL of his big rage scenes#its frustration that leads to anger because youre speaking to (another) brick wall and you can't adequately explain yourself#which. glenn is clearly more competent than dennis & i think a lot of the time in sunny the gang is WAY more obtuse for the sake of comedy#but its interesting to watch the dynamic because as charlie said last week#they are mac and dennis (especially when theyre fighting)#i just think.. they are in a semi-unique position to understand this because this is how they are. while several other writers do not get i#ada speaks#untagged

risk e. rat’s pizza and amusement center
the awkwardly long name (read: it’s always sunny in philadelphia) - both character and show meta incoming and I feel like that’s the first hint of the latter
am I the only one who keeps thinking risk e. rat’s pizza is the pizza for you and me…
“they make kids feel like they’re the ones in charge” - so interesting coming from mac mcdonald. soon followed up by “they were the first set of boobs I ever saw since my mom’s” which ties right into the burgeoning mommy issue thread
at the end of the day it’s all part of the fun!
just the gang singin’ in the car :)
dennis “that’s not my name” reynolds
how have I just NEVER noticed that dee is left-handed???
the broken water fountain - does it mean anything? I’m too tired to figure it out I need my tumblr brain trust
maybe mac being clean-shaven this season is to make him seem more boyish? I have a new theory for this every episode
I think I saw someone else say this but I do think it’s fitting that charlie and dennis are together on the titties storyline because of their shared baggage around childhood sexuality, like no one else in the gang would really be able to relate to dennis here and if charlie is figuring his shit out with that then he'll definitely serve as a parallel for dennis having to figure it out too
I like how they represent three different eras of risk e.’s (frank, gang, present day) to really explore changing values and how things getting softer can be bad in some ways but good in others. this episode definitely feels in keeping with lethal weapon 7 as a very sunny way of critiquing sunny that feels satisfyingly self-aware but also fairly true to form which is a pretty fine line to walk, to give credit to rcg and the rest of the creators
also if you haven’t seen the john oliver piece on chuck e. cheese go watch it because it provides so much context and crazy true history of these types of places that was definitely in my mind while watching this episode
dee and frank paired up again, and in a childhood place, probably ties into the dee parent-issues thing I hope they’re building up to
each character really tells on themself about what fucked up stuff they’ve come to believe is acceptable or even enjoyable but should be questioned:
frank - violence and verbal abuse toward children and everyone; sexually harassing women with impunity; calling people the r-slur
dee - ethnic humor, not racist humor; making her explain how it’s funny and realizing it’s not; ecologically irresponsible plastic cheese that gets immediately thrown away; dimwit duck or whatever his name was; not understanding what satire really is!!! ← they really took one of their biggest critiques head on
here’s a question I have about dee’s character - she tries to justify her problematic sense of humor and every time frank points out the truth behind it, illustrating what’s really awful about it without really meaning to, and dee seems to genuinely recoil like she doesn’t like that. does she feel bad and react that way because she doesn’t want to do harmful things, or just because she doesn’t want to be perceived as being un-pc because that’s what’s uncool now? like remember when charlie said “I think I might’ve called an old lady a cunt this morning” and looked kind of aghast at himself? could dee be developing more of a conscience too and if so, what does that say about her? or is she just a vehicle for rcg to navel-gaze about the show? also remember in lw7 how mac was like “if you don’t praise me for being a good person then why am I doing it?” I lie awake at night wondering how much rcg want to be better people vs. how much they don’t want to be kicked even further down the hollywood totem pole for being yucky. please share thoughts if you have any
mac - simulating real-world violence to get it out of his system; shame - “if you got no shame, you’re never gonna hate yourself enough to stop being bad”
dennis and charlie - being unprotected growing up; that’s what the bone’s for! (there’s nothing like a glenn and charlie riff btw); is it wrong because she’s underage?
sunny is really amping up the inner child work for the gang, I mean arguably the gang have always been childish but this season I feel like they’re exploring it in a more comprehensive way like via the setting of this episode. and it ALSO works as a perfect commentary on the show and we love the layers
there’s no adults around…
“cause we need monster representation” we need some representation for those who are freaky and fucked up okay??
I wish I could remember who said it but someone suggested that the de-breastifying of justine has to do with dennis’ heteroness disappearing and that is a very fun take - I do think it says something that they’re fixated on a very abstracted version of sexuality via these almost disembodied tits that aren’t even human… like are we overcompensating for something gentlemen? can the characters and the show itself have any relationship to women that doesn’t objectify or otherwise dehumanize them?
I for one think sam is supposed to look like a young mac, I saw some people questioning why they cast that kid and this is my theory. this is important for both the inner child and possible child-rearing stuff they’re bringing in
“hey man, I’m a licensed psychotherapist–” “you’re a talking dog”
“guys I hate to admit it but this place sucks now”; “that’s crazy, this was like one of the best bars in town, man”; “they could redeem themselves in the show” all very meta
“you cannot call a place a website” hahaha
“so that these kids can have the same experience that we had when we were younger” fucked up childhoods, the cycle of trauma, but also the show being how it used to be
and of course, an attempted revival of all that leading to immediate disaster. let’s move forward, not backward :)

Styx/Journey: Random Quarantine Thoughts
Styx
1. Surreal Live... If you watch a concert with all of the original members of the band you are witness to a unique life experience. They get unbelievably theatrical, while looking unbelievably ridiculous and dumb doing it. They dance, bob their head, strut around the stage like the biggest losers in rock ‘n’ roll history. Apparently, nobody told Dennis DeYoung that he was not on Broadway. You can read about his theatrical tendencies all you want, but you will still be amazed at how much he does it nonetheless. Yet, you have to admire the guy because he does it with total conviction and enthusiasm.
2. Tommy Shaw Is Just As Lame... Guitarist Tommy Shaw was always making fun of DeYoung for these theatrical tendencies, but the truth is he is just as lame. The dude jumps around, bangs his head, and kicks his legs in such ways that you actually feel bad for him because he really has no idea how stupid he looks.
3. 3 Lead Singers or At Least 2... Throughout any concert, you typically see Tommy Shaw, Dennis DeYoung, and other guitarist JY Young almost fighting for the crowd’s attention. This is something that I have not seen very often. Styx in a live setting looks like they have three guys on stage trying to be the lead singer all at once. Sometimes, you will not even see the other two guys for most of the song because they are in the dark. Such a thing really is not normal. Young, who sings the occasional song, does all of these flamboyant gestures all over the stage, but in truth, just ends up looking creepy and lame. At times, I think they forget to play because they are so caught up in these competitive theatrics. Also, for some reason they have this thing about standing back to back. One guy will sprint over to another guy, so they can play guitar or sing and play guitar back to back. This makes absolutely no sense to me.
4. Dennis DeYoung Wrote Most of Their Hits... For the longest time, I thought that Dennis DeYoung was the problem in the band, which is why he was forced out. This is most likely not true. Shaw and Young wanted him out because they were embarrassed about the Broadway tendencies of the band, while they wanted to take the band in a rock ‘n’ roll direction. The problem is DeYoung wrote most of their hits, and those songs are all ballads. The reason three albums went triple platinum was not because of their rock ‘n’ roll sensibilities. The two guitarists were basically clueless as to what made their band so successful. I find it laughable that these two morons had the grand illusion or shall I say grand delusion that this group could remain relevant with a heavier dose of rock and roll and all but eliminating any power ballad. Styx is basically what would happen if Jesus Christ Superstar became a band.
5. Max From Armageddon... I keep looking at the bass player, Chuck Panozzo and wondering what he thinks of all of this. If you watch Behind the Music, he is interviewed sparingly during the entire episode. If you watch a live show by the band, then you notice that he does not do anything theatrical, but instead just plays his guitar. I have to believe that through the course of his time with the band that he has learned to roll his eyes quite expertly with all of the drama. I kept thinking of the character Max from the movie Armageddon after they defuse the nuclear bomb. He says, “Man it sucks here in space.” I could see that bass player saying that all the time to the drummer. “Man, it sucks here in Styx.”
Journey
6. Steve Perry and 4 Guys... I was watching a documentary on the band when I suddenly realized that the other guys in the band actually had names. Now, on a more serious note, if you ask the average person on the street to name someone besides Steve Perry I would imagine that you would get a lot of blank faces. This reminds me of a more current band Stone Temple pilots with Scott Weiland. I was quite surprised to find out how accomplished the lead guitarist for Journey had been playing for Santana at the age of 14. What is his name? I could not tell you.
7. Not The Same...I have seen Journey play live twice. They have replaced Steve Perry with a guy from the Philippines, who sounds amazingly like him. Yet, there is no getting around the fact that he is not Steve Perry. Please refer to number six to understand why this is an even bigger issue. This makes any concert experience with the band just a little bit empty and incomplete. I was in Los Angeles when Journey opened for Fleetwood Mac at Dodger Stadium. I was talking to a lifelong Journey fan while waiting in line for a beer. The guy said to me, “They are great, but there is still a tiny piece of me that wishes that was Steve Perry up there.”
8. Stop Believing You Can Use This Song... The song “Don’t Stop Believing” has been used a couple of times as a kind of rallying anthem. In 2005, the Chicago White Sox used it as their theme song as they went on to win the World Series. More recently, I have read that people are using this song for positive moral support when it comes to the coronavirus. Now, I am all for music being used in this way, but I am also a big fan of context. I went back and read what the lyrics actually meant to the song. This is about a guy, who does not want to stop believing that he and his girlfriend will get back together. In what way, does a song about a broken relationship equate with either the game of baseball or a deadly virus killing thousands of people around the world. If you use this song, then you have to use every lyric. You cannot not just hijack the chorus and forget about everything else in the song. Hell, who knows maybe the guy in the song actually deserved it because he was a complete asshole.
9. Coup De-What... Recently, two original members of the band said a couple of other members of the band were trying to stage a corporate coup d’état. This meant that they were trying to somehow steal the band’s name, so they could play under its trademarked name, while forcing The other two out of the band altogether. I think it would have been easier just to push the two guys off a cliff, rather than this complicated scam. The other thing is let us just call it what it really is, a scam. Corporate coup d’état makes things sound way more sinister and important than it actually was in reality. This happens all the time in bands when one member sues the other for use of the name. The only difference here is they did not go to court, yet.
10. Jealousy Needs To Go Their Separate Ways... I read that the other original members of the band besides Steve Perry were not going to allow him on the stage for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony in 2017. I keep seeing this again and again where usually the guitarist becomes really jealous of the lead singer. I find this behavior to be absolutely moronic. Did you not understand what would happen when you signed up for this? These guitarists do not get that when something is verbally spoken to you from a singer a fan thinks they are being talked to in a special way. The other part of it is there are probably a whole lot of people in this world that do not appreciate nor do they care to appreciate how band’s create the sounds that they do. I keep thinking of the “Separate Ways” music video, where every other member of the band is trying to desperately garner some attention by either lipsyncing or playing their instruments in a theatrical way. Yet, that does not change the fact that the voice you are hearing throughout the video is Steve Perry.

for the salty ask meme #6 #1 #4 #5 and #12 Just pour all the salt, jennie!
oh my god i just refound this in my ask box so sit tight i’m gonna try & answer real quick~~~
1. What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get? + 4. Do you have a NoTP in your fandom? Are they a popular OTP?
as always, the answer is l*cas and p*yton like!!! it doesn’t make sense to me AT ALL how people ship this couple and consider them to be like soulmates when l*cas spends half of season one, all of seasons 2 & 3, half of season four, and the majority of season five being blatantly and vocally in love with other women* (mostly brooke but then in season five he’s literally engaged to and planning to marry lindsay and um friendly reminder kids that he’s not the one that calls off the wedding!!! he’s not at the altar going “yeah i love p*yton” he’s literally…devastated when lindsay leaves him and he even tries to win her back but like sure ok i guess he loves p*yton)
also, like…p*yton literally only wants to date him the second he becomes unavailable which isn’t even me being mean it’s just the goddamn truth!! he wants to date her in s1, she isn’t interested, and then he starts to move on (and she finds out brooke has a crush on him let’s sip that fucking tea together) and she decides she wants him!!!. and then she does the same thing in season five when he asks her to marry her and she says no so he?? moves on like anyone who got rejected would do and THAT’S WHEN SHE FLIPS HER SHIT and is like “oh well when you were eighteen-twenty you wrote a book where you promised to love me forever so you can’t get engaged to someone else even though yeah i started dating julian like a week after i said no to you”
and tHEN when they weren’t pissing me off on screen by treating everyone (brooke) like trash they were boring!!! like how tf
ALSO LISTEN the fact that not only does the show do a 180 and be like “oh lol l*cas always loved her even when he literally was repulsed by the mention of still having feelings for her” BUT THEY ALWAYS TRY TO PRETEND LIKE EVERYONE ELSE IN TREE HILL WAS WAITING FOR THEM TO BE TOGETHER AND NO ONE WAS haley – l*cas’ best friend!!!! – is vocally against them being together on like 3 fucking occasions minimum, nathan is 100189001 team brooke penelope davis, karen & keith – lucas’ PARENTS – actually take the time to get to know brooke and end up rooting for her and her happiness both individually and w/ their son and they never bother to do that w/ p*yton, skills literally calls l*cas out on his behavior and calls p*yton out on hers (re: them being shitty af) but then two eps later is all ~lol i was a fan~ when he clearly wasn’t, i could fucking go on but you see my point like…no one wanted them to be together including them
the way they treat brooke formerly gets its own bullet point because oh my god even thinking about it makes my blood boil like 98% of the time i’m fucking i’m pissed
also re: them being ~soulmates~ and they ~were meant to be together from ep 1**~ hilarie burton, who plays p*yton, literally came out in an interview this year and said that they never intended, to her knowledge, as the actress PLAYING P*YTON!!, for l*yton to end up together but that the show switched gears around season four iirc (because sophia bush wasn’t super comfortable filming endless romantic shit with her ex husband who had cheated on her which i support fully)
ALSO i could be wrong but like….i’m pretty sure l*cas kisses brooke in every season he’s a main in (the s6 is a fakeout flash forward in which he lowkey envisions himself marrying brooke and lemme tell you that sure doesn’t seem like he’s super committed to p*yton) and you can’t say the same for him and p*yton (again i might be wrong but i don’t think they kiss in season 2) and they only kiss in season 3 because peyton thinks she’s gonna die and he’s sitting right there
^ the above is arguably the pettiest bullet point on here but i don’t give a FUCK i hate this fictional couple with every atom i possess
FUCK !!!! LISTEN that stupid “you’re always saving me thing” that p*yton says to him and it’s supposed to be romantic like lol he literally didn’t even go into the school for her that day!!! like sure once he’s in there he ends up saving her but that isn’t even what he wanted to do!!! he goes into the school to try and get nathan and to make sure nathan doesn’t get hurt!! when brooke is sobbing telling him she lost track of p*yton when she was getting out of the building l*cas doesn’t get all White Knight and go in to save her he literally was gonna stay with brooke!!! who he loves!!! (there’s an instance similar to this in season one where he only ~saves~ her because he is like…around when brooke is trying to get help for p*yton and probably others too but that’s the BIG one)
ALSO OH MY GOD in season 3 when they make p*yton realize she loves l*ke again they do it in the dumbest way??? she’s literally…with j*ke and she is asleep and mumbles l*kes name and then j*ke is like “u said his name in ur sleep u don’t want to be with me” and dumps her while she’s crying and saying she flat out doesn’t love l*cas (but then she has no one else so she’s like lol what the heck i guess i will love him romantically)
and btw that^ is another instance where it wasn’t p*yton choosing to be with l*cas it was literally someone deciding NOT to be with her…which come to think of it is how they always get together? like?? they never choose to be with one another except in season one after they fucking cheat on brooke like dirtbags and then l*ke dumps brooke to be with p*yton but after that they literally..only pick each other as last resorts because they have no one else. like lmao!!! that is not my idea of grand romance otp it’s literally…sad in the pathetic, embarrassing way
*idr season six that well but i am willing to bet he does it a little bit during this season as well (also from what i remember they literally…stopped writing scenes w/ him and brooke one on one together because they knew the audience would take one look at those scenes and KNOW he still loved her and not p*yton)
also um brooke/lucas parallel nathan/haley so much so it’s just so fake whenever people try and say they weren’t the intended endgame for a while there like…look at the parallels. open your eyes.
anyway y’all i could probably keep going i am the most bitter and angry about them always and there’s literally 200+ things that are just ??? about them it’s Too Easy
oh also fandom jumo but uh piper/l*o from charmed are boring as shit they’re okay in s1-2 and after that i was like hey can we get him off my screen thanks
5. Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you?
I don’t think “ruined” is the right term, but there are definitely some ships that I saw overhyped imo and then when I watched the show I was…underwhelmed. (I’m referring specifically to Ch*ck/S*rah when I type this because the never ending will they-won’t they was just fucking exhausting and by season 3 – which is where i am currently on hiatus – when they actually got together i just could not bring myself to care) (also she can do better and deserves better and season 3 chuck is like the worst version of him so far but)
6. Has fandom ever made you enjoy a pairing you previously hated?
not to my knowledge!
12. Is there an unpopular arc that you like that the fandom doesn’t? Why?
i was just talking about this the other day with amanda!! (i would normally tag her but she loves l*yton and i respect that so i’m not gonna make her see the seven paragraphs in which i Destroy them)
essentially we talked about how everyone needs to back up off of season three of veronica mars. like, sure, compared to seasons one and two it’s not as good, but even those seasons have stuff i don’t like such as: gross rape plots, needless and unwelcome attempts at love triangles, sidelining of POC characters for ?? reasons (it’s racism y’all, that’s the reason), sidelining of female characters for White Male Development (re: Mac not becoming a regular that season while Dick & Cassidy both did), etc. and all of those reasons are the big reasons why people shit on season three but [dennis reynolds voice] newsflash asshole! it was there the entire goddamn time
^to continue the above, i think season three has SO MANY POSITIVES AS WELL for example: logan canonically tells veronica mars that he loves her. um. that’s Good Shit. also!!!: parker lee is there, weevil working w/ keith mars for a bit, logan and veronica making out on the stairs to fidelity by regina spektor, holy fuck does veronica mars love logan echolls so much, THAT SCENE WHEN LOGAN APOLOGIZES TO VERONICA AGAIN!!, BEATS UP GORY SORKIN BECAUSE HE’S RUDE AF TO VERONICA, SHRUGS WHEN GORY THREATENS HIS LIFE, IMMEDIATELY GOES AND APOLOGIZES TO PIZ, AND THEN VERONICA WATCHES HIM WALK AWAY BEAMING WITH HEARTS IN HER EYES LIKE THAT SCENE IS IN SEASON THREE YOU GUYS IT’S RIGHT THERE and then like!!! there’s quality eps in there that i love with my whole heart~~ wichita linebacker!!! poughkeepsie tramps and thieves!!! postgame mortem!!! charlie don’t surf!!!
in summary: like…yeah parts of it were geuninely awful. just..like….the rest of the seasons. and the movie. which is like.. another Thing
also fandom jump again but uh Rory’s decision to leave Yale in season six was absolutely the right one for her to make and Lorelai is the fucking worst about it. and if Lorelai hadn’t overreacted and ostracized Rory over it Rory would’ve gone back to Yale and lot sooner and that’s what you missed on Glee
