KANYE WEST WILL NEVER SUCCEED
Kanye is a hard working , and intelligent man. Yet he suffers from major delusions of grandeur, and an infantile view of the world, and its affairs.
He believes he has changed the world, and will continue to change the world even "more". But in truth he is an ego maniac, he see's others as lesser than him, especially if they are not fabulously rich and/or famous.
His plans are incoherent, and only align with the purposes of enriching himself, and his ego, nothing he does is selfless. All his charity 'work' you will find, unfortunately, also aligns with these selfish characteristics.
Is his music technically impressive? yes
He produces, he uses his voice, he is very creative in his own way, and the shoes, and style of 'yeezy' is cool.
But he believes he, the man, possesses skills that he alone has, he thinks he is special, more special than you, and maybe he has convinced you, you have now played into, and actively are participating in his delusions.
He say's he will one day release clothes for free, and 4 shirts for 20 dollars, but my money is on that never happening.
This would not align with his characteristics, there are only a few situations in which that would happen, and they all have to do with him taking and gaining, ultimately. And I don't mean profit, I am not anti capitalist, or anti socialist, make money, make alot of it! But Elon Musk didn't become the richest man on earth by not spending his own money, and that's true for almost all self made Xillionaires.
I wish Kanye the best of luck.

While research can help us understand our generation’s new morality and its changed consumption habits, the impact that the Covid-19 crisis will have on how our future looks and feels remains the most unclear. While times of crisis are when clothes seem to matter least, the irony is that fashion has been making itself at home with the idea of apocalypse as an aesthetic for quite some time.
“Survivalism” isn’t a word one normally lumps in with others like “glamour” and “style,” but according to the strategist and writer Lucas Mascatello, the idea of braving a dangerous future is one that has been a central pillar to many trends for quite some time (and will continue to be). Here, he explores the myriad ideas of the apocalyptic aesthetic — from dystopian to utopian — in our past, present, and future.
What Is Survivalism?
“Survivalism is a mentality. More than the daily practice of preparing for some unknown disaster, war, famine, or disease, it’s a complete worldview unto itself. Survivalism is a kind of reasoning that invites paranoia in, hammering your senses for warning signs and cranking your adrenaline into hyper-vigilance. In nature, we see the armored hides of armadillos and the scales of fish as practical choices made by mother nature, tactical choices that create an aesthetic. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs introduced the concept of tiered values, saying that at their most base, people first satisfy physiological needs like food, water, and sleep. These needs are followed by safety needs (security and shelter), then belonging and love, followed by self esteem and, finally, self-actualization. As a luxury market, fashion largely considers this top tier need: How can I achieve my full potential and what does that look like? It’s a far cry from where we started, concerned with security and defense ideas that inform military design and created armored organisms like turtles, serpents, and dinosaurs.”
Thirst for Annihilation
“Thinking about the end of the world is a romantic idea. And similarly, believing that you are living in the end of times is a great way to add meaning to one’s life. Fashion trends such as chest-packs, camouflage, and tactical gear all gesture toward survivalism as an aesthetic, one that feels like a rebelling against the classic luxury object (even if it’s just as expensive). There’s a long menu of world ending possibilities, each inspiring designers, authors and artists to consider what it might look like if the ice caps melted, if an asteroid hit, if locusts wiped out the crops and we were forced to live off of dehydrated proteins. The thirst for annihilation has helped propagate an array of disaster-based looks.”
Cyberpunk and Tech Gibberish
“Dystopia has its own aesthetic, one reaching deep into fetish and counterculture, mashing sex against sexlessness, turning nerds into heroes, and flipping the paradigm. The incel-meets-BDSM style of The Matrix was the brainchild of costumer designer Kym Barrett. And now, violent models dressed in spandex at a Burning Man-style orgy is how we imagine dealing with a hostile future. In Hackers, costume designer Roger Burton created the most everlasting pop-cultural reality for cyberpunk, featuring club kids rollerblading through New York City. This idea of a post-apocalyptic youth culture would later be echoed in the work of Alexander McQueen, in particular his FW99 collection for Givenchy, a collection created for the eve of Y2K that explores the possibility of a post-human type of glamour. Even in the face of disaster, there’s optimism.”
Disaster Chic
“Trend forecasting is about predicting the future, or at least making a bet on outcomes. Yet style is almost always about being ahead of the curve. At a citizen level, many of us want to be first: stockpiling, prepping, or wearing a mask before everyone is else wearing one are different ways of signaling a truth to come that most are too stupid to recognize. Crises are always a surprise, and yet they always feel inevitable in a way that hangs over even the quiet times. And it’s not always as straightforward as Diesel’s famous 2007 ads Diesel-ifying global warming. Brands like Acronym, Maharishi, and Stone Island have made their bread and butter by sexing up survivalism as a type of high tech roleplay. The apocalypse is stylish because it communicates pessimism, irony, and indifference — like being a smoker or drinking hard because we’re all going to die anyway. Rather than the classic outsider stance of ‘Fuck the World,’ it’s infinitely cooler to say, ‘The World is Fucked.'”
The Dirty Future
“If you zoom ahead 20 years, it is very unlikely that we will all be Errolson Hugh-style cyber ninjas. For while the future is generally tied to the idea of progress — the notion that things develop over time in some cumulative type of way — the unfortunate thing is that beings tend to decay. Colossal world events create the kind of disruption that upends progress, causing fissures and deltas in place of what was once stable. Films such as Mad Max show a world filled with skin rash, poverty, and violence. Kanye West’s first Yeezy Season collections (despite their flaws) were an example of embracing this kind of back to roots, spartan future. Martin Margiela’s first runway show on a playground in Paris’ 20th arrondissement was arguably the first to propose this dirty future in the context of fashion, an idea that began as something romantic and would later spin out into heroin chic. The idea of fashion role-playing destitution is so seminal that it plays a central role in the most famous fashion parody of all time, Zoolander, whose creative director villain Mugatu is planning a homelessness-inspired runway show called ‘Derelicte.'”
Hypothetical Optimism
“Having spent considerable resources imagining the apocalyptic future in its various manifestations, generations of designers and thinkers have proposed speculative solutions that point toward an apocalyptic brand of optimism. Geniuses like Issey Miyake explored survivalism as a pure function through conceptual brands like Final Home and APOC — both dedicated to innovating adaptive solutions for the barren earth to come. Founded in 1992, by Lica and Masahiro Nakagawa, the label 20471120 epitomized Harajuku maximalism while showcasing a future aesthetic based in recycling old products, fighting industry waste, and setting up studios where fans could donate old clothes to be remade as one-of-a kind pieces. Yet even in their most earnest, these future-facing solutions were at best speculative, never made to scale and living firmly within the realm of academia.”
Conclusion: Predictions About Our Real Future
“In the face of our present global disaster, we find ourselves in a situation that feels as though we’ve skipped the bells and whistles of dystopia and gone straight into decline. Few would imagine that New York City would be enduring a shortage of medical supplies and pondering the creation of mass graves — and, for now, the future looks more like looted Wal-Marts and canned tuna than flying cars and floating cities. Today, we’ve become focused solely on what we know works, turning away from novel aesthetics and how things look and returning to our most basic instincts. The real future involves catering to our physiological needs, making masks from old dish towels, draping ourselves in plastic, and wearing latex gloves. These are the aesthetics of coping, one where many of us are considering our own survival for the first time. Rather than replace the expressive and aspirational elements of style, fashion will likely come to play dual roles — both as the expression of our fantasy self and as the reality of who we are today.”

Tyson Beckford came through for his first-ever VladTV interview, and he started off by clearing up rumors about his origins, revealing he was born in the Bronx and moved to Jamaica until he was 7, and then his family moved back to the Bronx.
From there, Beckford detailed his involvement with the notorious Jamaican gang The Shower Posse, and distancing himself after he was brought in on co-conspirator charges that were later dropped. Tyson then spoke about having goals of becoming an actor and being offered a modeling job for The Source, which kicked off his career.
During the interview, Tyson spoke about how his career continued to go up, and he spoke about his astonishment about being paid $50,000 and $100,000 for commercials. Tyson also spoke about welcoming his only son in 1998, starring in “Zoolander” and various music videos, including 50 Cent’s “21 Questions” and Britney Spears’ “Toxic.”

Coachella Review Part 1: The Bad One
The first weekend of Coachella ended yesterday to great acclaim among music media, but I have mixed feelings about what I saw. Let me be clear that I only watched the live streaming video on YouTube, but it is my belief that the cameras give you a very good sense of what it is like there. There were some great moments, some not so great moments, and some epiphanies in my mind that sprung up as I watched hours of this festival. For years, I had always looked upon Coachella as the top of the heap of summer music festivals. This was the place that Daft Punk started the EDM movement in 2007 with a legendary set that many have pointed to as a turning point in electronic music. The festival takes on a more mysterious feel to it rather than other ones like Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo because people in music tend to give it more weight. Coachella seems to matter just a little bit more than the other festivals. I have always seen it as the pinnacle of music festivals, which has always been a dream to have enough money to attend. The problem being that Indio, California is remote, expensive, and a camping experience. I do not do the whole tent thing too well. Last year, I attended Bonnaroo, which I took a shuttle bus from Nashville each day. The other festivals are good exposure, but playing a set at Coachella means an artist or band has truly made it. NME would even go on to say on Monday that Arianna Grande performed a set so amazing that it was possibly the greatest performance ever in the history of the festival. Yet, I am here to tell you that this festival’s excellence might be just a bit overrated much like the hyperbole of NME and perceived greatness of Arianna Grande. Do not get me wrong that the headliners are amazing, but they are much the same as many other festivals. You will see the same artists over and over all summer at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Governors Ball, and a host of others. The supporting acts leading up to these headliners is where this year my opinion has diverged for the first time. I never realized until this year that there is a theme to the artists that play this festival. All these artists are up and coming, but the bands are pretty much a playlist for chill music overall. I am not including the rappers or the dj’s, which are many, but the artists who sing and provide more traditional music. The mood throughout the day is low-key, slow, and partially boring. Again and again, my one thought was that this was lounge music. I thought back to other years realizing this subdued vibe is very apparent. The crowd seemed a bit quiet throughout the weekend as this may just be an intended style and theme of the festival that people just do not realize. This is Coachella and you should be going f’ing nuts, but they were not doing so. Do not get me wrong because the crowd was dancing and jumping, but they seemed to really be playing it low-key as if they were too cool for school. I got news for you Coachella, you’re not. Sorry Zoolander.
Now, the other festivals seem to cater to a diverse collection of artists meaning there is usually something for everyone. Other festivals seem so much more accessible to the average fan. Yet, Coachella is not only a hipster’s dream, but it is borderline snobbish in the lineups they put out every year. Think of this fact for this year. The lineup was filled with international artists, k-pop, and some rather bizarre wardrobes throughout the weekend. I am all for diversity, but I also enjoy accessible music. Lyrics provide meaning, but I found there were a few too many artists doing songs in another language, but the people did not seem to care. This could be a symptom of music trends in general as the world has now looked to other subgenres for new content different than the diy rap that has taken over for EDM as what the younger generation is looking towards these days. Yet, the more I thought about it and looked upon Coachella as having much more in common with a festival like Pitchfork, rather than Lollapalooza. Weirdness, offbeat, strange is embraced, but it is so over the top that it sometimes sacrifices quality of what sounds good. There was so much I saw that was borderline ridiculous.  For example, Jaden Smith suspending a car high up in the air as he attempted to represent something that sounded almost like music. Please note Jaden Smith probably gave the worst performance in the history of Coachella. I commented that it was if the movie After Earth was a musical performance. J Balvin emerging with an outrageous anime blowup thing was not blowing anyone’s mindl, but simply really dumb. Another takeaway from many of these supporting rappers at Coachella this year. A majority of them were unimaginative, devoid of talent, and could not find a catchy melody if it fell out of the sky. Perhaps they should have worked a bit more on the music, rather than what visually would start trending on Twitter. It is my belief that if the music pushes boundaries, then the social media will take care of itself. There were numerous examples of this throughout the weekend like Pusha T’s set on Sunday. These rappers are not necessarily bad, but they are dull and boring. I almost fell asleep watching his never heard a drum machine I could not insert into my music set, while in comparison Childish Gambino on Friday showed what a good hip-hop artist actually looks like. Yet, moments like his set seemed to be few and far between, which makes me very sad. I sometimes worry about the future of quality hip-hop music in this country and whether we are witnessing the death rattle as Lester Bangs said of the music aspect of hip-hop. They give the audience in whatever capacity absolutely no motivation to continue to watch or listen to them at that moment in time. This is supposed to be words and music, but these artists make it feel as if there exists only words in life and the music part is a minor annoyance and inconvenience.
I was able to observe a few things about the dj’s that played this weekend as well. One observation was the fact that just like Lollapalooza the thumping bass that occurs live is not the same as the radio friendly pop songs these dj’s release on Spotify and YouTube. I see this as a cheap trick for the music fan that does not attend a set to dance like you were at a mid 90’s rave. I want to hear a dj live that recreates the songs that are released on the streaming services because that is the only reason EDM has remained relevant. The days of Skrillex dominating the chart are over as featured singers have come to the forefront on a majority of a dj’s catalog. I was watching Zedd do his set and noticed that he kept imploring the audience to sing along. I thought that was actually lazy on his part because a musician should be doing that for the audience. I read an article last year about Post Malone being a cultural tourist when it comes to the black experience in America. This got me to thinking about these dj’s and the ways in which they create music. Do they know anything about music at all? I am not trying to insult their process, but I am curious if they only know loops, sequence, samples, but these songs that they use, how do they originate? Are they just copy and paste musicians? One could very easily make the claim that a dj is a songwriting tourist and somewhat of a guest to the creative process. They take the finished product of a song, but do not endure the struggle it took to get there. Some rap could also be looked upon in a similar way because I have written poetry before. I can probably write a halfway decent one in 30 minutes. Yet, I wonder with a lot of music these days the atmosphere of the musical production process. I want to know how the music was created and who actually created it.
Another noticeable thing was the number of special appearances by other artists for the bigger name artists. Most times, they would bring someone out and that person would sing a verse or two, then you would find out the identity of that special guest. I would sit there annoyed because it would be nice to know that ahead of time instead of trying to guess. Weezer clearly let the crowd know who was coming out there, but a lot of the hip-hop acts would not say anything at all. You cannot enjoy the song because I am just sitting there racking my brain trying to figure out who is singing. Now, let also say that there were some good moments too. I found a number of bands that I did not know of, which I definitely will listen to in the coming weeks. Artists like the Wallows, Bazzi, King Princess, Maggie Rogers, Blood Orange, and some others really impressed me. The good parts will be in my review of Coachella next week as the festival concludes in its second weekend highlighted by Kanye West’s Sunday Service.

The Decision.
Beginning of 2017, I was in Sacramento, still looking forwards for a chance to chase a dream and working hard and looking for a promotion. In early March, I took my talents back to the Bay Area and got hired for the new job. Then 2 months of licensing and another month of training, July 24, 2017. I made a decision. I'm leaving a job that I've had since April 13th, 2001 and I'm going to leave it all out on this blog. Reason being? I loved it for a lot of years and I want to remember what I can remember. So if there were anyone and anything that you can blame me for, then, here's my side of the story. 16 years at a company, I think I have the rights to say whatever I want to say. '''Twas was the day that was senior year in high school. I went and started looking for a job because I chose to go to Chabot College, a community college local to most of the East Bay. I went in, first one I met was the General Manager, Eric Martin. When anyone ever talks about first impression, that guy impressed me. I was a 17 year old, looking for a job with no resume in hand. He professionally told me to fill out an application and asked if I wanted to be interviewed immediately. "Sure, let's do it." Two days later I was sitting in the middle of a store front inside Bayfair Mall going through orientation with a bunch of other future co-workers. First person I met, Nam Huynh. We eventually even served popcorn and trained together in Union City. We took over the A side and we had tons of fun. If you want to teach your employees to upsell, just say "managers said if we don't make enough profit, they won't give us raises". Never not upsold ever since then. I met a lot of people like Yolanda, and later on "Army" (yeah I graced him that name) and also Soap, his friends, his family. Hell, we even joked and called ourselves a race team, "Century B16" as in Bayfair 16. The chance came around August, Rush Hour 2 weekend. One of the managers asked if I was interested in working in the booth, turned out to be one of my future best friends, Marvin Capistrano. On to the booth I went. Talking about building up movies, breaking down movies, hanging out with Duane talking about Pootie Tang. Man, crazy days. First time I ever built a movie was, Zoolander. Dry runs after dry runs, hot print break downs on Thursday. I slowly but surely deterred from going to school. Then, a GM put me on probation and wanted to fire me. I will never forget this, simply because I wasn't properly trained and this 30 day probation, I lasted longer than the GM and his crew. I learned one important thing, training. Which is also another thing that I've learned, to be a people's person. Next GM came, Charles, I breezed through it and apparently we were doing a bad job. Let me remind you, at the time, the ATM at Bayfair was stolen!!!! Then, during that time I met my little big sister Erica. Although we didn't exactly work together all the time but we were always close. I love Erica to death. She's definitely bff status. Meanwhile, supposedly the theater wasn't doing good, so this Latino dude name Lazaro came along, and this other Asian ricerocket driving dude name Anthony Tan came about... with Brian Pacquing.... The rest was history. Rios, if you ever get to read this, I still hate you for making me cry. But it was definitely tough love. I learned the most from him. I learned how to be tough on someone, but real. You can't yell at someone that consistently yell, nags and bitch about things. You MUST teach. For that, Rios, I forever owe you. To Anthony Tan, you taught a young kid what's right and what wrong. You taught me how to grow up and be a man. I might not always understand you at the time, but boy I sure received the message. Rios did good and took over and taught me how to be good, but when it was his time to leave, here comes Julius. David Wilson-Scott bka Julius Pirie Scott, you are way beyond a father figure to me and even more as a brother. You taught me how to trust my skills and be great. We went to see Usher, we saw Kanye, and we saw riots at the theater, but you taught me everything and you did not hold back any knowledge. I learned from you to give your knowledge out unconditionally. Thank you. Then, it was time for me to leave. Cinedome 8 East Fremont. Ben Lin, Montry Souvanthong, Ashley Perreira. You three were more than what I can ask for from a new GM, Ben knowing me the most by working with me at Bayfair but the other two kept me sane. Jeff Herzstein, thank you for trusting a 21 year old kid to tell you to spread your wings and trust your skills, thank you for helping me become a fair and smart GM. Adam Bebee and Adam Bauer, you guys were good and ya two taught me how to be a fair GM and I love the fact that you guys gave me respect. To the late Jane Benjamin, may you Rest In Peace, or well, keep going to forever create havoc! I love you Jane, I love the fact that you wanted to work and you love me and respected me. When everyone told me to avoid you, I didn't, I got close to you. Thank you for the countless meals of country way, Disneyland Mickey ears and the bottle of champagne for the holidays. I love you. I hope you look after me. Two years later, when Cinemark came running and bought out Century. I took my talents to Union Landing. Jacqueline Brooks, for the record, I hate you as a co-worker, but I love you as a brother. We never get along not because we have differences, but we don't get along because we all want to look out for each other. Two years at 25 made me love you like you're the big sister I never had. To Leticia Gonzalez Solis, you, you're a beast. Hug hug, kiss kiss, little hug big kiss little kiss. I taught you everything I got and you gave me all your effort every day. Out of all people that followed me, you were not the smartest but I know 100% you worked the hardest. Baby boy Ali, I know you got my back and I'm sorry I wasn't there for you when you needed me, but trust me, if you ever need anything, you know I for damn sure wish that was me that took that bottle to the head instead of you. The two years of 25 was so good, it exhibited my skills. Then I earned a promotion to open my own theater. For the fucking record. These years at Hayward, forever let me say what I feel, because I am, and still am very angry about the process on how and what happened. First, when the audit program happened, I was opening the theater. Second, my self destruction and choice of going back to school was directly affected by Cinemark. I opened the theater, the shopping complex and the recession hit hard, so the projected attendance was short by almost 40%. It was 2008. Then Cinemark gave all the managers in the Bay Area reduction in geographical allowance. Mind you, all managers in the Bay Area were "century" pat while I was "Cinemark" pay but the cut was all across, so I got less money. Not to mention, the first day the paycut happened was at a Cinemark conference, that's not encouraging to me. Not to mention, my superior discouraged me for getting higher education, simply telling me to focus more at work and talk about how great advancement is. Then came the budgeting process, I was compared to a 8 screen cinedome on payroll, to reduce payroll at a new location, I was told to also act as the MR guy and the GM 5 days a week during slow season. Then I was blamed for lack of production, bad audit scores, no bonus and also more paycuts. 1600 bi-weekly check to 1200 when I decided to leave. So I'm tired of people saying "you were never there" or "you fucked up the payroll", because I didn't. Snitches gets stitches and even if I blamed my regional manager or higher ups, the small potato in me would never win. The Cinemark algorithm on reduce cost of living in 2009, made us, the managers get a pay cut. I have yet seen the facts and studies. And the small potato in me never mattered. Cinemark, century pay grade, they didn't care. For the second time I'm mentioning it, you take 1/4 of my paycheck and decrease my pay within 3 years, trust me, you would be as mad as me. I did have a good time at Hayward because it was challenging, look at it now, not too shabby, but I hate it. While I was working at this location. I lost my girlfriend. I never get to see her and I was stressed all the time. Don't like Hayward. The city hall wanted the theater to play at least 2-4 art films every week, so they can "attract" people. I was invited to the city hall meeting to have almost 2 hours to answer the fine citizens of Hayward on how a movie theater should be ran. Same people that discouraged me to be around and just wanted things their way. Not a happy place. Then due to poor mid 80s audit scores, I was told that I would have no chance to survive as a general manager, for the third time, let me remind you that you lost 1/4 of your pay at the same time since the beginning. I chose to go to Fremont. I will end this chapter like this. Fremont. It was a time for me to leave the moment I got there. Jason Cardosa, I gave you my all. I don't like to belittle people and it doesn't make me feel good. Countless times I was reminded how poorly I ran Hayward and how much I wasn't trustworthy enough to run a department, while every single department I ran was the best that you ever got when I was there. Strange. Apparently because I have GM experience then it's expected. I know I got skills, but you never really cared and tried to find a solution to solve the issue. You provide patchwork and I provide solutions. We had our differences, but it was much like Jackie and I, because we care. You stuck with me for 2 more years and how ungrateful am I but to leave you so shortly and with pretty close to no notice. I popped my last batch of popcorn, sold my last ticket and used my last set of movie theater broom. I don't care what anyone says, you out of every one that I know have the best potential and you're definitely not too young for a regional leader role, but be personable. That's what Farley taught me. Be there for your people and understand how they feel. I got to know you so much more when we went to watch Oblivion in LA and that was a good trip. I was happy we made that trip because I feel like you actually do care about people, but try that on some other people, they respect you more that way. To every single person I've trained, thank you for listening. To everyone that I screwed over. 16 years later, I am 100% proud to say that I don't have any. So, boom. Cinemark, Century, thanks for the memories. Notice I put all the memories on people? The people made it for me. The lives that I made better and taught, I'm proud of that. I always said I'll go back to Bayfair and kiss the floor before I quit. Well, I'll officially do that on Friday, but 100%, my theater life is done and thank you all.

4 - Post A.
Evaluation
Introduction
I aim to analyse and assess my Creative Investigation essay and how my planning posts have led to my final film, whilst also discussing how my film has been developed from various pieces of work from last year’s portfolio. My primary focus in my Creative Investigation was to evaluate whether or not Ben Stiller could be considered as an official auteur in reference to Andrew Sarris’ Auteur Theory. Alongside this study, I also discussed how Stiller’s films are seen as genre films opposed to art, therefore he is not a quintessential auteur. But he is yet to prove his potential, as he has not directed many films.
 Representation
I aimed to represent a specific element of the media, as Stiller does with each of my focal texts. Reality Bites focuses on an aspiring documentary filmmaker, Zoolander represents male models and Tropic Thunder looks at a group of actors. From this I decided to centre my film around a young ‘vlogger’ (also known as a ‘youtuber’) as in recent years they have become hugely popular. I also wanted to satirise vloggers, as Ben Stiller has done in the films he has directed. Yet Ben Stiller often looks at these groups of characters with pity quite often and underlines his film with a potentially darker message. So whilst the humour is ‘easy’ on the surface, Stiller deals with much more pressing issues (e.g. exploitation). Therefore I also wanted to explore something more serious. I was inspired by ‘twitter beef’ between celebrities such as Chrissy Teigan, Donald Trump, Kanye West and Azaelia Banks, as it quite often reaches the headlines. I presented a rivalry between my two characters which peaks (during my film) when Ophelia decides to expose the contract between them, making them look like friends, in order to “get more followers”. I decided to show this to the audience by using a screen recording of Ophelia’s video and then John’s online response, and subsequent backlash.
 HELLO GORGEOUS:
Tumblr media
I decided to show it this way, as it is what John sees on the screen but it would also what any of Ophelia or John’s ‘subscribers’ would see, putting them directly into the film.
TROPIC THUNDER:
Tumblr media
ZOOLANDER:
Tumblr media
REALITY BITES:
Tumblr media
These shots of the TV screens inspired me, as each sequence was almost a low in their careers. The Tropic Thunder still shows an interview of Stiller’s character being humiliated. The still from Zoolander is at a low point in Zoolander’s career I which he gives up modelling and returns back home, only for his family to be embarrassed by the video shown above. The still from Reality Bites is of Lelaina’s documentary, which has been completely torn apart by the production company, a low point in her career. Therefore I decided to use shot of the screen to depict a low point in John’s career, shortly after he had been exposed, much like the characters of Stiller’s films. All the shots also feature the colour blue. Stiller’s films in general feature the heavy use of primary colours (Zoolander is a prime example) I wanted to do this within my film, so I created three different colour presets. I used yellow for John’s vlogs as they were light and sunny, blue for Ophelia’s vlog in showing the low-point of John’s career and red for everything else to act as a strong contrast between reality and what John’s ‘audience’ see and represent the two different sides to John.
I was inspired, not only by the colours in Zoolander, but also the primary colours used in Richard Ayoade’s Submarine which I have studied as part of Film A Level. Ayoade uses the colours to match emotion (e.g. blue = sad), which is something I achieved in my film.
 SUBMARINE:
Tumblr media
Here red is used to emphasise passion and warmth.
 Genre
Stiller’s films are predominantly comedy, with the occasional comedy hybrid. I wanted to make a comedy with a focus on a melodramatic character. Stiller explores such characters, and even the stereotype of the characters, via soundtrack and the dancing along to it.
  ZOOLANDER:
(Soundtrack: Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go - Wham)
Tumblr media
REALITY BITES:
(Soundtrack: My Sharona - The Knack)
Tumblr media
TROPIC THUNDER:
(Soundtrack: Get Back - Ludacris)
Tumblr media
Each film used a well-known song in a scene of dancing. In Zoolander, Stiller emphasises the stupidity of the male models and their dangerous lack of safety as they dance about whist driving. In Reality Bites, the dancing is used to depict a sense of carelessness and youth within the characters as a song they like starts playing whilst they’re grocery shopping. In Tropic Thunder, Tom Cruise’s character dances at the end when Tugg breaks out of his type cast by winning an Oscar.
 HELLO GORGEOUS:
Soundtrack: (I Feel Good - James Brown (Big Skapinsky Remix))
Tumblr media
In my film, I wanted my character to dance to the soundtrack to reveal his extroverted, fun and extremely confident personality. By choosing the song ‘I Feel Good’ by James Brown, I hoped to evoke a reaction from the audience, whether they feel they should dance along or laugh at John’s dancing. I also decided to use a remix from Sound Cloud, which was uncopyrighted, as many you-tubers struggle with finding such music and instead use a remix much like the one I featured. One audience member said they really enjoyed my use of soundtrack and how it changed from diegetic to non-diegetic when John wasn’t dancing.
I chose to use costume in aid of characterisation. I was inspired by Stiller’s use of costume in Tropic Thunder and Zoolander to create a costume exhibiting the flair of John’s personality.
 COSTUME INSPIRATION:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My original costume sketch vs. The final costume used.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of these costumes inspired me. The bold print in Derek’s costume and the opened shirt of Les Grossman both aided my design. Both characters are extremely self-invested and their costumes reflect that and I wanted to mirror that through my film.
Narrative
Ben Stiller follows a linear narrative in each of his films. Tropic Thunder being the only exception as it includes a flashback moment of when Stiller’s character was in a Forrest-Gump-style film. The narrative is similar to Chris Vogler’s hero model as a hero is established and then faced with a challenge, which they overcome. However, each character Stiller presents is clearly flawed. And whilst the characters come of age (in a sense), they do not really stray from these faults, making them questionable ‘heroes’. I wanted to create a rivalry, like the one between Derek and Hansel and Tugg Speedman and Kirk Lazarus, in Stiller’s films. They start off by hating each other but then they learn they need each others help in order to succeed. I created this in my film through editing. I wanted to show a clear difference between reality and the staged reality the characters create.
HELLO GORGEOUS:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
STORYBOARD:
Tumblr media
I decided to use two different shots to illustrate the difference. I followed my storyboard closely at this moment.
I added a border so that it was obvious to the audience, aside from the drastic change of enthusiasm, which this was something John was filming. In Reality Bites, there are lots of shots designed to look like Lelaina is filming them, which then change to her in real life, so it is like we are watching the clip, rather than the real event.
REALITY BITES:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Style
Ben Stiller also shows hints of a postmodern style within his work, which I hoped to accomplish with my concept. The concept of my film is regarding the constructs the audience the audience can witness when Ophelia and John are ‘filming’ but they see the other side of their personality when they are shown as their true selves, whilst the audience within the film only sees the construct. The idea of vloggers is that they are supposed to be real people who show audiences their lives, yet I wanted to show these people leading almost a double life because of the ‘media personalities’ they have created. Goodbye Lenin, by Wolfgang Becker and another film I have studied as part of A-Level Film Studies, weaves a similar web of lies which the protagonist deals with and this also inspired my film, as I wanted the conflict to lie within the superficiality of the characters and their relationship.
I was also inspired to feature a cameo within my film, much like Stiller does within his, yet I was unable to work with Ben Stiller on my film, so I decided to make John have a ‘crush’ on Ben Stiller and used a poster as a prop, showing his influence over the character, as well as the film.
HELLO GORGEOUS:
Tumblr media
Critical Approaches
Even though I decided that Stiller’s films are probably more genre than art, and that he needs to make more films to be considered as one of Sarris’ auteurs, I could be seen as the auteur of my film, as I had an even larger role to play than Stiller did in his films directing, editing, writing my own film, as well as thinking of all the elements of mise en scene, cinematography and sound, suggesting I had a colossal impact in the production of my film.
 Influence of the Course
Studying Digital technology has also made me aware of the changing media landscape, such as the influence of YouTube and ‘vloggers’ upon the younger generation and society in general. Digital technology has made it easy for any to make content, and platforms such as YouTube make such content accessible for everyone. While this has been most useful in my filmmaking experience as I shot on a DSLR and uploaded it to YouTube, many critics of digital technology argue that the art of film has been lost, due to such digital technology. This also links back to the genre vs. art debate regarding Stiller’s work, as he produced a film as a result of digital technology, which was probably elevated by his own celebrity status, as well a those starring in the films. So the lower film standards, such as vlogging (and some even argue Stiller’s films) have affected the quality of films.
My filmmaking techniques have also evolved since my coursework last year. I experimented with a soundtrack and dialogue, I also took more time to edit the film and explore different transitions and cuts, such as the montage I decided to incorporate. I also experimented with different styles of filming, such as screen recording and having the actors film the ‘vlogs’.
YEAR 1 COURSEWORK:
Tumblr media
YEAR 2 COURSEWORK:
Tumblr media
Conclusion
I think I have produced a successful piece of work which achieved what I had set out to do: make a film which has been clearly influenced by Ben Stiller. I have also explored the micro technical features much further than before and have created an artefact with interior meaning and clear style. I have been inspired by the course and have been influenced especially by Ben Stiller’s filmmaking. When looking back at the auteur debate, via Sarris’ theory, I have fulfilled much of his criteria, as I have tackled the production and distribution of the film by myself, taking on all roles (except actor), similarly to Stiller in his films. However the lack of films I have made and digital platform I have used may cause people to question such a title.
