Went to the library again today. Got chapter 2 done but it's super short so I'll need to see if I should just add it to my intro or add stuff to flesh it out. Anyway tomorrow I think I'll work from home bc I need to run some errands in the morning.

My next chapter is going to be a rough one. Lots to cover: Romantic notion of poet/genius as gendered male, poems as women, rise of the "poetess" and its subsequent denigration and relegation to gift books etc., and the effect of sentimentality and sensibility on identity of women writers especially poets, and then the actual poets/"poetesses": L.E.L., Hemans, Barbauld etc. and the various ways they either conformed to or disrupted the identity.

I think you should take your criticisms to miles luna and kerry ( but be polite ) they will listen like on twitter or when they do their ama send it to them etc ( if you dont like doing that you can go find someone who will

Hey, friends. Real talk for a moment: please do not send your criticism to Miles and Kerry. 

This is admittedly a crazy complex situation and I could write you all a dissertation on how viewers’ desire/right to respond to texts is intersecting badly with social media granting us the ability to respond in an immediate, public manner 24 hours a day 7 days a week. But I’ll spare you. The main takeaway is that (generally speaking) there are three times when you should direct negative feedback at individual writers: 

They specifically ask for it. If Miles or Kerry go onto their twitter accounts and ask how everyone is liking the volume? They need to be prepared for a potential backlash. They might not get the happy, “I’m loving it!” response they expect and that’s on their assumptions. That still doesn’t give people the right to be cruel in their criticism, but they opened the door. 

Their writing is having a “real world” effect that needs to be addressed. A perfect example of this is Rowling’s insensitive use of Native American culture in her world building. She’s actively harming a minority group there and that group--along with their allies--should call her out on it. I might not like the writing in this volume, but the only effect it has is to lessen my personal, highly subjective enjoyment of a fictional web series. 

The criticism is not framed as personal. You dislike a writing choice so you start a hashtag about it. Tumblr is being stupid so everyone organizes a logout. A character death pissed you off so you sign a petition to bring them back, etc. All of these things demonstrate displeasure with creative choices without risking it becoming a personal attack. 

Beyond this, authors know their writing is far from perfect and they know it’s impossible to please everyone. If the mistakes are glaring enough they’ll be discussed by far more prominent outlets than my hodge-podge tumblr blog and Miles and Kerry will hear about it. I 100% understand that desire, Anon, and it’s great that you know to “be polite,” but that’s also a very easy way to start a harassment campaign, intentionally or otherwise. I’m not saying no one can ever send criticisms to authors (they are choosing to maintain accounts directly connected to their work). However, I am saying that the RWBY fandom does NOT have a good track record for being critical in a constructive, respectful manner. I’m not opening that floodgate. 

At the end of the day Miles and Kerry are providing us with a beloved series mostly for free and generally speaking, they’ve done a damn good job with it. I have no desire to ruin their day with my notes.

I did get a couple pages done today but my wrists are still really hurting even when typing just for a few minutes. Trying to take breaks off and on where I organize sources but it’s frustrating. Tomorrow when I work I’m going to use my bluetooth keyboard which should help some, but I need to get a wrist cushion for it too. This is proving to be an issue with my schedule: I’m very behind where I wanted to be ☹️ Pretty sure I won’t be done by Monday, but we’ll see. Library is closed Monday for the holiday so I’ll go on Tuesday and at the very least I’ll get it done by the end of that day.

Library day!!!! Started work around 8:15 but I have to leave at 1:30 bc my roomie etc has a meeting at 2:30. I’ll post my progress when I get home 👍📚

Hi y’all!!!! I have a huge deadline I’m trying to make if I want to graduate this summer. Basically I need to write approximately 100 pages by May 24th!!!! So that means this blog is back in business lol 😮 Anyway, just like before I’ll be posting from the library and keeping track of my progress for accountability (and any positive thoughts, well wishes etc. are of course very welcome) ❤️❤️❤️

Library day! Got a lot of reading done, wrote a good chapter outline, and extracted some quotes, plus found a great new source on gendered conceptions of genius. All in all a decent day 👍

Forgot I have a few things I need to do at home this morning, so I'm going to work from home today and I'll be at the library tomorrow and Thursday, then maybe Friday too depending on how well it goes. Goal is to get this chapter finished no later than Friday 👍 (although this chapter is now chapter 2 since I'm adding the legal chapter to my intro and that kind of sucks bc now it feels like less progress 🙁)

Library day went well. Got a few pages written (finally!!! yay!!!!) and a better more detailed outline finished. Had some carpal tunnel issues though and I forgot to bring one of my wrist supports 😫 So I may need to take tomorrow off. I’ll see how I feel in the morning. I am feeling much more confident about this chapter though so that’s awesome 😊

Had a meeting with my dissertation supervisor and it went very well. He's really encouraging and I am so glad I chose him (and he agreed lol). I have a few notes/corrections to do for my theory chapter and we decided to add my legal chapter to the intro. For my next chapter we decided that to simplify I can just refer to sentimentality/sensibility a little and round out with footnotes so that helps reduce my workload and sources I need to find/read. Then later I can always add more if needed. Great meeting!!! Now I'm going to chill. Tomorrow is a library day 📚📒💻

Did some work this morning trying to get through my sources for chapter 3, but I'm a little overwhelmed. Might actually ask for some advice on how to simplify since I'm meeting with my supervisor tomorrow. I do think the chapter is important to my overall argument, but I also don't want to get too bogged down in details and I have a huge tendency to do just that 😭

Did a few hours at the library this morning. I'm almost done with chapter 2. Tomorrow I should be finished. Plan to be back at the library tomorrow for sure, and maybe Friday too. It's so nice on campus this time of year bc there are very few students around 😂

Worked a little on sources and organizing for chapter 3 this morning, but I'm going to let myself have the rest of the day off. Tomorrow will be a library day. If my book comes then I'll work on finishing chapter 2, and if not, I'll start writing chapter 3.

Today I got a little done on my second chapter but forgot I ordered a book that I need to finish; it'll be here Tuesday 🤞 Tomorrow I have to go to my clinic in the morning and Ollie has an appointment to get his blood drawn to check if the hyperthyroid medication is working so I won't have time for library. I'll try to go either Tuesday or Thursday to make it up.

Today was a work at home day and I finally finished chapter 1. Yay 👍 Going to email it to my advisor and we'll see. Should be able to finish chapter 2 tomorrow or Monday morning at the latest. Together that's about 25-30 pages. But I'm more concerned with the outline than with actual page counts.
