Dec. 5th: Cookies with Krampus 🍪
Mark your calendars, de-lint those atrocious holiday sweaters, and make sure grandma isn’t in the path of any reindeer - we’re celebrating the festive season with an international cookie baking party and everyone’s invited!
WHEN: December 5th [aka Krampus Night] HOW: using #KRAMPUSCOOKIES
We’re using a broad definition of ‘cookie’ - squares, bars, stars, meringues, and pastries are all valid and welcomed.
This bit of festive fun starts out as an international cookie recipe exchange and ends with an international cookie baking party on December 5th, Krampusnacht [Krampus Night].
There’s no set time; this is a relaxed event spread through the entire day and night to allow folks to take part at their convenience. Just be sure to tag your entries with #KRAMPUSCOOKIES to grant fellow bakers snooping access.
We’re kicking things off with a quick recipe exchange b/c I’m 1.) a nosy bitch, and 2.) a complete and utter recipe whore. If we all reblog this post with the recipe(s) we’re thinking about making the notes’ll provide a collective pool of new and exciting right-click potentials.
Questions? Just shoot me over a DM. See everyone on the 5th! <3

That Sexy, Delicious (and Hella Exhausting) #KrampusCookies Duo
Tumblr media
And just like that ... My Husband was off work. Rye Flour and Rum were obtained. Dinner was made, served, and eaten. And it was time ... For @graveyarddirt / @msgraveyarddirt's beloved Cookies with Krampus event ... And dread.
Lots. And lots. And lots of dread.
Why dread, you ask innocently? Because I'd naïvely agreed that I would do it all, every last bit of it, completely on my own, in exchange for my Husband making the supply run on his own after work. This would, in fact, be my downfall and would result in it taking three goddamned hours to make a mere two batches of cookies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made two cookies: Joe Froggers (named for a freed slave and his wife, from Massachusetts), and Spiced Rye Ginger Cookies; originally I was only going to make one. But admittedly Mrs. Dirty's own intrigue over the name of the Joe Froggers spurred me into saying "what the hell, why not just do both".
I would say I have regret, given I had to go it alone. But honestly I am both too tired for such emotion at this point ... And the cookies are too good to regret making.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We subbed out the "Dark Rum" for Golden Rum in the Joe Froggers because he couldn't find Dark Rum at the dinky Liquor Store he went to. And we subbed Dark Rye Flour in for regular Rye Flour called for by the Spiced Rye Ginger Cookies, because that's all we had available in our store.
I also accidentally underbaked the Joe Froggers because I was dumb and forgot to up the oven temperature from the 325f that the SRGC's required, to the 375f they needed. But they're still not too bad despite that. Just a little ... Sticky. The whole batter for that one was weird as all get-out in general, though. I've never seen a dough like it in all my years. Not a cookie dough, anyways. It was wild.
The SRGC's were much more normal besides the use of Vegetable Oil instead of Butter. I admit, though, that I was a little unsure of how they'd be; my Husband could only find a coarse stone ground whole grain Rye Flour, and so the final batter was incredibly gritty as it was actually coming together. I was worried it wouldn't smooth out while baking. But it did! And damn are they really good.
Tumblr media
Both of them are good, honestly. I kind of love the weird Brownie-like texture of the Joe Froggers. And the sugar you roll the SRGC's in before you bake them rounds out the really heavy spice in them and the dark flavor quite nicely.
In all, I think the SRGC's might officially be a replacement for regular Gingerbread cookies moving forward in my life. There's just something about that black pepper and the Rye flour in them ... I don't think I'm ever going to eat a normal Gingerbread Cookie ever again; these are infinitely superior.
Thank you, Dirty, for yet another wonderful community event. Now if you don't mind me, it's 2 and a half hours passed my bed time, and I have bloodwork I need to force myself to finally get done tomorrow (much to my sadness and dismay) 😭

My selection for cookies with Krampus. I’ve been itching to get my hands on my Mom’s wooden cookie molds.  I’m pretty happy with my first attempt. :)

Krampus Cookies !
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For tonight’s cookies with Krampus, I made an addition to Joy of Cooking’s “master recipe” [X] with these cherry pistachio walnut cookies that taste like an ice cream shop and look very festive. :)

(Special thanks to @graveyarddirt for being a gracious host as always)

Never had a reason to try out madeleines before, so KrampusCookies was good timing. The two issues I had with the recipe was melting the butter (always a problem) and the constant folding. I can't tell you how many times that scene from Schitt's Creek came to mind.

Too much going on IRL to host Hagging Out, but I think I can swing a #KrampusCookies social this year. ❤️

Completely forgot that I had a Master Gardener Meeting I still needed to attend this week, as well as the Hannukah Service the day after that. So I still can't relax and recoup my energy properly like I thought I could 😩
At least my Husband and I won't be making our Krampus Cookies until tonight, after he gets off work; we've still gotta run to the store and grab Rum and Rye Flower for the cookies we picked out (Spiced Rye Ginger Cookies, and Joe Froggers) before we can actually make anything for the event.
This month is going to be so ridiculous. Ah well. At least I'm finally getting proper sleep again, ha.

Cookies With Krampus 2021 Repost
Tumblr media
Black & Whites for Cookies with Krampus with @msgraveyarddirt / @graveyarddirt! With special guest ThatDamnOkie, even- who was staying with me for the weekend!
We may or may not have gotten very shitfaced last night, and stuffed ourselves with as much sushi as humanly possible while binge watching S02 of The Witcher on Netflix, and then made our cookies for Krampus ... And I won't lie: I’m honestly really glad that we decided to make the actual cookie dough ahead of time before taking all the things that made us shitfaced. Because cooking while high was certainly an experience.
Tumblr media
I’ve been looking for over a decade, now, for a cookie I kept calling a “Black & White”, that I made constantly in my childhood. And the only thing I could remember about it, was that it was a two part cake cookie made with one part chocolate cookie batter, and one part white cookie batter. But the fact that it was specifically a cake cookie made with sour cream was the bit that was the most important about it.
My mother swore she’d given the book to me when I moved out at 17, but I swear I never had it. Which means no recipe. And no matter how hard I’ve looked online over the years, I’ve never been able to find anything that was right, either; most results turned up some variation of a white cookie dipped in melted chocolate- which isn’t even remotely close to being like the cookies I remember. Adding “sour cream” to the searches never helps, either.
In fact, any time I’ve mentioned sour cream as a key ingredient in the cookies, I’ve gotten some kind of a grimace from whoever I’m talking to- as if the entire idea of sour cream in cookies was disgusting to them; needless to say the people in my life have not been as interested in trying to find this recipe as I’ve been over the last decade and a half.
It took me a ridiculous 15 years to track this recipe back down as a result. But eventually... Finally... I was actually able to find one book this month on Archive.Org that pinged my “hey, I vaguely recognize that cover!” sensors: Better Homes and Gardens All-Time Favorite Cake and Cookie Recipes, from 1980. And what do you know, I was right- and there she finally is again ... And definitely not what I remember her being named at all; no wonder I could never find the damned recipe anywhere every time I’ve gone looking for the thing!
I do not remember walnuts ever being involved in them. That bit really doesn’t surprise me, though; since I married him I’ve been a bit notorious among my Husband’s family for omitting nuts from recipes that call for them at every conceivable opportunity, because the damned things’ve always felt like chewing on Styrofoam to me ... I guess that’s apparently been a habit of mine for far longer than I thought 🤣 Whoops.
I found a copy of the book, in Hardcover, in “Very Good” condition, on Abe Books for like $5 with free shipping immediately afterwards, and may or may not have made a late night impulse purchase for the sake of childhood nostalgia. I may also have zero regrets about it even now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m so glad that I stuck by it and kept trying to find the recipe even when everyone looked at me like I was nuts for it. They’re just as good as I remember- if not better, honestly, now that I’m a better cook 🤣 Now I jut need a glass of Eggnog to go with them.

After rolling out the first batch of speculoos a little too thinly I measured every subsequent batch with a ruler to ensure a 1/4 inch thickness.
(You don't even want to know what I have planned for a pair of cookie foxes.)
(...but I'm going to tell you, anyway, for TEH W1TCHCR4FT. 😉)

cookies 🍪 with 🍪 krampus 🍪
I'm making Dutch speculoos for #KrampusCookies.
Tumblr media
Small collection of mostly vintage cookie cutters.
Tumblr media
I used buckwheat flour to make these cookies gluten-free and Trex (a vegetable shortening) to make them dairy-free. Dough was rested overnight in the fridge.
Tumblr media
Even though he's technically working my husband helped stamp out a few rounds.
