Over the last year, we have heard of several serious cases of Leptospirosis in vaccinated dogs across the nation, so we wanted to take a moment to tell you more about the disease and steps you can take to protect your dogs. Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can affect most mammals, including dogs and humans. One of the most common mechanisms for transmissions is through contact with trash contaminated by infected rodent urine. Dogs can also contract leptospirosis through the skin by swimming in contaminated water or drinking from contaminated pools. While cases are more common in rural, wooded areas with stagnant water sources or heavily irrigated pastures, Leptospirosis lurks everywhere, including urban dog parks where an infected dog might have urinated.

A Leptospirosis vaccine is available for dogs from your veterinarian. It requires an initial vaccination followed by a booster about 3 weeks later and then annual updates. The vaccine only protects against Leptospirosis caused by the four most prevalent strains of lepto bacteria though. Even if your dog is fully vaccinated for Leptospirosis, you will still need to take care to keep your dog away from unsanitary water sources and areas that rodents might visit.

Leptospirosis can require intensive veterinary care and can be fatal to dogs. If you suspect your dog has it, see your veterinarian immediately for treatment with antibiotics. Typically, veterinarians diagnose Leptospirosis with a blood test as the symptoms vary and overlap with other diseases. Generally, watch for sudden fever, sore muscles, reluctance to move, weakness, lack of appetite, shivering and depression. If your dog is diagnosed with Leptospirosis, take precautions to ensure that the disease isn’t transmitted to other dogs or humans in the family by using rubber gloves and household disinfectants to clean up after your pet. Be sure to carefully follow your veterinarian’s recommendations related to antibiotics to clear the infection so that your dog doesn’t become a long term carrier of the disease.

We know dog parents have a lot to worry about. Be sure to talk with your veterinarian about the Leptospirosis vaccination so that your dog has as much protection as possible and be careful about your adventures. Read more about Leptospirosis here.

COVID19 and Veterinary Clinics

I don’t know if anyone cares or if anyone has already talked about this, especially since we know how mass panic and hoarding has effected everyone. But I just wanted to shout into the void a little. (Anytime I try to write something on the internet about animal care I get SO MUCH hate because heaven forbid everyone has an opinion on a medical science. Do not bother contacting me if you disagree, I do not give a single fuck. I work in this industry and I already know it’s not worth debating with anyone who isn’t educated in this field.)

First off, at lest here in CO, most ER veterinary hospitals and corporate owned GP small animals practices are remaining open. I’m sure it depends on a case by case bases, but if you live in CO and are having trouble finding veterinary care for whatever reason, I can tell you some options that are remaining open.

We do ask that if you are sick, to STAY HOME. I have had clients who are coughing still bring their animals to the vet. They did not have COVID19, thankfully. But in general we still have to stand in a small space with you and take a history.

In fact, stay home unless your pet is sick or you absolutely NEED those vaccines updated. That’s more just my recommendation so you stay safe though.

Look, I understand a lot people get anxious about taking their animals to the vet. I also like to be present in the room with my pet during exams. But while we’re trying to slow the spread of disease please be patient and understanding that most clinics are going to be asking you to wait outside or that they take animals to their treatment area. Again, small spaces, air born disease on the rise. You gotta work with us or we do have the right to refuse to see your pet.

At this time the CDC does not believe pets can get COVID19, but if your are sick they suggest avoid cuddling with pets and if you can, have another member of your household, friends or family care for them. (Animals can get a type of coronavirus that is species specific and it is not the strain we are currently concerned about in people.)

People can literally google this shit. I don’t understand how someone can spend hours looking into bullshit homeopathic treatments for renal disease (NEWS FLASH THERE ARE NONE!) but will call the vet to ask if animals get COVID19. That’s all I’m going to say on that.

If you are hoarding supplies or know anyone hoarding supplies, I beg you to consider/convince them to donate unopened supplies to local shelters and veterinary hospitals. We don’t resell things like hand soap or toilet paper or paper towels. We actually get these from suppliers such as Costco, Sams Club, Staples, Office Depot. We’re currently experiencing a shortage of these supplies. And maybe we can make due without the toilet paper and paper towels, we’re smart we’ll figure that shit out. But HAND SOAP we need. We need to be able to wash our hands between each of our patients. In my hospital I see about twenty patients per day. Over all my hospital will see between 40-60 patients every day, and we generally have 2-3 doctors and 6-8 techs staffed each day. I can’t imagine what a bigger ER and specialty hospital needs. (Actually I kinda can since I came to GP from ER and Specialty, but it’s still too much to really wrap my mind around.)

We also need masks. We use these during surgeries and dental procedures. And I know there are people out there hoarding them. My hospital is at the point where we are having to save and reuse masks for certain procedures. Don’t want me breathing on your dogs open abdominal cavity bro? Maybe you shouldn’t be hoarding masks. (We would never actually do that, we’d probably just have to refer the surgery else where, at least in my hospital.)

Do you need to wear a mask? Here’s some info about that from Mayo Clinic.

I’ve also got a special “Fuck You” list for the people who are stealing exam gloves from the vet. Just fuck you dude. We’ve got cameras in the room. We see what you’re doing. Fuck you.

We also need gloves. (I’m referring to common exam gloves, exam gloves are not the same as the sterile gloves we use for surgical procedures.) We use these gloves to stick our fingers up animals asses every. single. day. We use these when we have to do deep ear cleanings, clip and clean wounds, dental procedures, and to protect ourselves when animals have Zoonotic diseases.

I personally have had my hands on patients with lepto, ringworm, scabies, staph. and thank all the powers at be for gloves. But those exam gloves aren’t going to help you stay safe from COVID19. (Literally saw this woman in the grocery store wearing exam gloves and then she took out her phone and was using her phone, gloves on. Like come on, it’s gloves you don’t need a manual to know how to use them properly, but if you do, they probably aren’t helping you anyway!)

Dog having trouble walking after shots

Vaccinating dogs regularly is a normal practice ensured by their owners. Certain side effects are expected as a significant event has occurred. For dogs having trouble walking after shots then a few things could be done to make things easier for the animal.

Dogs may become aggressive or they are seen limping especially after rabies vaccination. This may also indicate some infection, which needs to be treated.

What to do if my dog has trouble walking after shots

Dogs can react to vaccinations of different shots. If the situation exists and subsides in a span of 24 to 48 hours then there is nothing much to worry about. However, if the situation prolongs more than a safe time then some action needs to be taken. You may find your dog lethargic, lesser hungry and having difficulty in walking.

You may find your vet saying that there is no connection between vaccination and walking issues if your dog post shots. However, you are sure considering the history of a dog with vaccinations that there is some link there between the two. Vets normally consider it as some infection or maybe a genetic disorder at times. For them, it could just be a coincidence.

It has been seen that 4 out of 5 dogs are fine 48 hours after shots. The one that has a prolonged issue with any reaction needs to be further investigated. Your vet irrespective of the fact whether he sees a connection of walking issue with shots would be more than happy to help you. The doctor may determine if there is an infection and can treat accordingly.

As per vets, a lepto shot may cause slight tenderness and difficulty in walking for 3 to 4 days. In the case of rabies shot, you may expect slight walking discomfort in dogs for a week and this is normal too.

If you see your dog in trouble post-vaccination, then the best remedy at home is to use a hot or cold pack over the impacted area. This will help ease the aching if any. However, if this doesn’t still resolve the issue after a day or two then take your dog to the vet.

One thing should be noted here that a few dogs are more prone to react with shots as compared to the others. However, in any case, a walking issue does resolve soon and nothing much to worry about.

Conclusion

A dog having trouble walking after shots is a common thing to hear. This is true if the issue doesn’t prolong for more than 48 hours. The initial “not-to-worry” time may vary from dog to dog. For instance, rabies vaccination may take 1 week to recover as compared to some other shots.

In extreme conditions, consult your vet. So it is better to make sure your dog stays in good health and ina stable condition and you just have to take care of its diet and keep it away from any possible hazards to help it cure faster.

Good news for Halifax fur-babies: lepto scare a false alarm

If there’s one truth about social media, it’s that even something that is false can spread quickly online.

Over the weekend, a single post informing dog owners about a disease believed to be back in the Halifax area went viral.

The only problem is that there isn't a single case of leptospirosis in the region and that made Katie Doucette breathe a sigh of relief.

Doucette’s dog, Diesel, is healthy and active dog these days and that’s a big difference from two years ago when he got leptospirosis.

“We were all set to say our goodbyes at that point,” Doucette said. “We were pretty sure we weren't going to be able to bring him home.”

The bacteria that causes leptospirosis, or lepto, is spread through the urine of infected animals, which can get into water and soil and survive there for months.

Lepto can affect a variety of animals, sometimes fatally, including dogs.

Diesel recovered, however, but the whole ordeal came with a lot of stress and a hefty price tag.

“It was very expensive,” Doucette said. “It ended up being almost six grand."

Halifax saw an outbreak of lepto a few years ago, and over the weekend, a post on social media indicated the infectious disease was back.

Veternarians like Dr. Eric Carnagy say that isn't true.

“We are not seeing cases, so, it's not a problem,” Carnagy said. “Not to say that it couldn't become, because it certainly was a problem here a few years ago.”

Carnagy says a lot of people have vaccinated their dogs since the last outbreak of lepto, keeping it at bay.

Tiffany Sullivan, with Playful Paws Doggy Daycare, was one of the people who saw the post online and initially thought the disease might be back.

“It seemed to all kind of stem from one post and then like wildfire, it kind of spread through the dog community,” Sullivan said.

“I think that if we take anything from what happened yesterday, that it's great that everyone is taking lepto so seriously and that everyone was so on edge about lepto because, it is very, very dangerous.”

Social media experts say things that aren't true, like lepto being back in town, often spread a lot faster than the truth.

“It's very common for things to get spread around really quickly, without people checking, because, they believe whoever shared it with them,” said Anita Kirkbride, a social media expert. “They figure, well, if my mother shared it, if my sister shared it, if my best friend shared it, it must be true, but they're not thinking about the fact that person assumed the same about whoever shared it with them.”

Although there are no cases of lepto in Halifax at this time, Carnagy says there is a vaccine available for high-risk dogs, like those that use dog parks.

Canine Leptospirosis Maps

I’ve had a few discussions with people over the past week about geographic variation in disease risk. It’s a great subject because it’s an important and often overlooked issue. Whether it’s animals being imported, animals moving with their owners, animals accompanying owners on vacation and animals being moved between regions within the county, movement between regions can involve picking up or moving diseases in parallel.

From a veterinary standpoint, the challenge is identifying issues that you wouldn’t normally consider, because the disease is rare or non-existent in your practice area. The first step is querying travel history (something that is done variably well). The next is figuring out what that means. We don’t have great resources that say “if you go here with your dog, this is what you need to be concerned about”. I get questions about travel risks all the time and it’s taken a lot of effort to get up to speed with risks in different regions (and I still have a lot of gaps). We’ve published the odd (crude) map to help out, but getting good quality information, ideally based on surveillance data, and assimilating it into a central resource is a challenge (a goal of ours, for sure, but a slow process given time and money limitations).

Regardless, we’re getting more information all the time and getting that out in the open is important. Dr. Michelle Evason wrote a post on her K9 Lifetime Study blog about the leptospirosis data we’re working on, and I thought that was worth putting up here too. It’s a fairly high level map of a few years of leptospirosis cases in dogs in Canada, based on data from IDEXX Laboratories. There are various limitations with any test dataset so it’s not a perfect representation of this disease. However, it provides some useful data. Lepto’s a nasty disease and also a vaccine preventable disease. So, understanding where it’s common is important for thinking about it (making a diagnosis) and when discussing vaccination programs.

The incidence is adjusted for human population, on the assumption that dog ownership trends are similar across the country. We do that so that we don’t see bias towards big cities. If we just plot the number of cases, place with a big dog population but low incidence of disease could have more cases than a true high risk area with a lower population and hide the real risk.

This bacterium lives is different wildlife hosts (e.g. raccoons, rodents) and is passed in urine, and is survives well in moist, temperate climates. Unsurprisingly, we see lepto concentrated in much of Ontario and east, particularly in southern regions, as well as coastal British Columbia. Risks varying within those regions and lepto vaccination discussions require some assessment of risk (although I consider lepto vaccination a core vaccine in most of these green (and all of the blue) regions on this map.

Vaccines

When you go to the vet, it can be pretty confusing. And that is not your fault. Without proper client education and knowledge, how will you be able to know what is best for your pet?

There are a various different times of vaccines for Fido. Currently, the only LEGALLY required vaccine is Rabies.

I am not sure of other states, but I do know Texas state does require rabies vaccine every 3 years.

But you may ask, what are the other vaccines for?

There are your core vaccines, and then other vaccines that are recommended due to the exposure fido gets.

Core Vaccines

Rabies: Highly fatal viral infection of the nervous system which affects all warm-blooded animal species. Rabies is one of the most important zoonoses because it is inevitably fatal outcome for the infected human.

Distemper: Highly contagious and serious viral illness with NO CURE. The virus is spread by the air and by direct or indirect (utensils, bedding, etc) with an infected animal. Initially, it attacks the dog’s tonsils and lymph nodes and replicates itself there for about one week. Then it takes it’s attack on the respiratory, urogenital, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems.

Parvovirus: Highly contagious virus that can affect all dogs, but unvaccinated dogs and puppies younger than 4 months of age are the most at risk. The virus affects dogs’ gastrointestinal tract and is spread by direct dog-to-dog contact and contact with contaminated feces, environment, or people. Most deaths from parvovirus occur within 48 to 72 hours following the onset of clinical signs such as vomiting, bloody diarrhea, fever or low body temp, abdominal pain and bloating, and lethargy.

Hepatitis: An acute liver infection in dogs caused by adenovirus. The virus is transmitted by direct contact with infected saliva, urine, and feces with your pups nose or mouth. The virus attacks the functional parts of the organs, such as the liver, kidneys, and eyes.

Non-Core Vaccines

Bordetella: The bordetella vaccines decreases the severity of canine kennel cough, or a form of an upper-respiratory disease that directly effects the lungs. Signs such as coughing, hacking, and lethargy are often noted. This vaccine is recommended for dogs who are boarded in a boarding facility, go to dog parks, or go to public stores such as petsmart, petco, etc, dog shows, or dog day care.

Parainfluenza: Highly contagious respiratory virus and is one of the most common pathogens of infectious tracheobronchitis, also known as canine cough. This vaccine is recommended for dogs who are boarding in a boarding facility, go to dog parks, or go to public areas including stores such as petco, petsmart, etc, dog shows, or dog day care.

Leptospirosis: Lepto is zoonotic, meaning, humans can get sick from their pets due to contact with urine of an infected animal. In many cases, canine leptospirosis is asymptomatic, meaning there are no symptoms. But when symptoms do show, it usually is a fever, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, lethargy, depression, and blood in the urine. Leptospirosis vaccine is highly recommended for any dog that goes outside and has access to open water, such as lakes, puddles, ponds, the ocean, or any other sources of water that wildlife, such as raccoons, rats, squirrels, and other rodents and dogs/feral cats, would urinate in.

Lyme: Lyme disease is a highly deadly disease transmitted by ticks. When an infection leads to a disease in dogs, there tends to be an inflammation in the joints as well as lack of appetite, depression, and can lead to damage to kidneys. And rarely the heart or nervous system. The disease has been seen everywhere in the united states, however is more promenade in the midwestern states, the Atlantic seaboard, and pacific coastal states or highly wooded areas.

Rattlesnake: Rattlesnakes are found in wetlands, deserts and forests from sea level to mountain elevations. They are more common in warmer seasons from spring to autumn. And here in Texas, we actually see them year round. A rattlesnake bite is an veterinary emergency. They lead to serious injury or even death to thousands of dogs each year. The venom of a rattler is a very complex mixture of toxins that spreads through a dog’s body following the bite. Treatment of a rattlesnake bite is expensive and can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars. We HIGHLY recommend this vaccine for anyone who goes camping, hunting, hiking, or lives in a rattlesnake prone area.

Flu Vaccines: Highly contagious virus from direct contact and droplets from sneezing, coughing from dog to dog. Droplets can contaminate surfaces such as bowls, food, and other objects increasing the risk of infections. There are two different types of flu- H3N2 and H3N8. Symptoms include coughing, sneezing, nasal and ocular discharge, and anorexia. It is very difficult to diagnose and potentially difficult to treat. There is a single vaccine for both, or a single vaccine with both types of flu in it. Contact your veterinarian for more information. We recommend this/these vaccine(s) for dogs who go to dog parks, dog shows, pet day care centers, and boarding facilities.

How to Prevent Heat Stroke in Dogs (Plus, 5 Other Summertime Hazards)

Seasonal pet health hazards should be considered during the extreme temperatures of both winter and summer. Keeping pets safe during the summer is easiest if you know what the risks are and how to manage them for your dog’s safety. The dog days of summer provide lots of opportunities for fun with your dog (camping, hiking, swimming, kayaking and backpacking, to name a few) but also bring a unique set of health hazards and risks pet owners should be aware of; including, but not limited to: heat stroke, dehydration, burned pads, parasite infestation, leptospirosis, and seasonal allergies. Here’s how to prevent heat stroke and other summertime hazards in dogs:

1. How to Prevent Dehydration in Dogs

One of the best ways to keep your dog safe in the summer time is by providing lots of cool, clean, fresh water. Consider preparing low sodium chicken broth or yogurt ice cubes, and introducing canned dog foods (best when frozen in a Kong!) to increase the moisture content in your dog’s diet.

2. How to Prevent Burned Pads in Dogs

Under the summer sun, asphalt on sidewalks and streets can heat to a temperature that can burn a dog’s paws. To avoid scorched paws, walk your dog very early in the morning or in the late evening when the streets have cooled off. If you must walk your dog during the day, dog booties can protect his feet. Always put your hand down on the asphalt for about thirty seconds – if you must pull your hand away because the street is too hot, it is too hot for your dog to walk on without hurting his paws. If you don’t want your hand on the street for thirty seconds, your dog probably does not want his paws on it for thirty or more minutes of walking.

3. How to Prevent Parasites in Dogs

Summer is the season for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes; pests which can present a minor discomfort to your dog at best and at worst may be life threatening or cause self-mutilating behaviors. Feeding your dog a high quality diet, without preservatives or chemicals will build his immune system, making him generally more resistant to parasite infestation. There are a wide variety of preventatives on the market, including chemical spot-on treatments, repellent shampoos, essential oils, and flea/tick collars; talk to your vet to see what she recommends for your dog. Cleaning your house frequently and keeping your dog well groomed will also reduce the risk of parasite infestation.

4. How to Prevent Heat Stroke in Dogs

Heat stroke is a serious risk to dog’s health – in worst case scenarios, it can be fatal. You can prevent heat stroke in dogs by restricting your pet’s exercise during the hottest hours of the day (early morning or late evening are the best times for exercise during the summer), by making sure he is well hydrated, providing cool places for him to relax, providing opportunities to swim, cooling mats, and by never leaving your dog unattended in the car during summer heat.

Many dogs die annually in hot cars. Even if your windows are cracked or you park in the shade, heat can build quickly in a car in the summer, turning it into an oven. If it’s 95 degrees at noon and you leave your windows cracked, the temperature in your car may still rise as high as 113 degrees. This is a recipe for disaster for your dog. If you must leave your dog in the car for any period of time, the air conditioning should stay on. Leaving a dog to die in a hot car is not just a health risk for your dog, but may be cause for animal cruelty charges in some area. The solution? Don’t leave your dog in a hot car.

5. How to Prevent Leptospirosis in Dogs

Leptospirosis is contracted through bodily fluids or tissue and can be transmitted through direct (as in the case of a bite or ingestion of flesh) or indirect contact (through water sources, food, etc.) with an infected animal. Stagnant waters are a common source of leptospirosis bacteria. Lepto can cause permanent health problems or death if not treated quickly. Symptoms include fever, vomiting, trembling/shaking, lethargy, anorexia, tenderness of joints and muscles, and increased water intake. If you suspect your dog has lepto, get him to a vet right away, an emergency vet if need be.

There are vaccines for lepto but they do not prevent all strains and can cause significant adverse reactions. Talk to your vet about weighing the risk of infection with the risks associated with the lepto vaccine.

6. How to Prevent Seasonal Allergies in Dogs

Your dog may be allergic to one or more seasonal items, which include fleas, grass and various plants, and mold. If you suspect your dog may have seasonal allergies, is scratching and perhaps losing fur, a visit to your vet is recommended. Here is a great website where you can learn more about the various kinds of allergies affecting dogs and treatments for canine allergies in any season.

Leptospirosis outbreak concerns linger for N.S. pets and owners

Nova Scotia’s Chief Medical Health Officer is taking steps to make sure pet owners don’t contract an illness that’s been striking dogs in the Halifax area.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that affects the liver or kidneys. It can be fatal for animals if it progresses and the symptoms can be difficult to spot. The highly contagious infection can also be passed onto humans.

Dr. Tricia Horsman says there are currently dogs sick with the infection, who are being cared for at the Metro Animal Emergency Clinic in a closed off area.

“Last week I think we had twelve inpatients, this week we probably we have about six that are suspected of leptospirosis cases,” she says.

Vomiting, increased drinking, diarrhea and jaundice are all symptoms of Lepto.

Concerned with the amount of cases in Halifax, the Nova Scotia Department of Health recently wrote to veterinarians and medical doctors alerting them to some of the symptoms and precautions pet owners should take.

“Basic common sense personal hygiene measures will significantly reduce even the low-level risk that might be in place right now,” advises Chief Medial Officer, Dr. Robert Strang.

Leptospirosis is more commonly found in tropical climates and Strang adds that colder weather is expected to reduce the number of cases.

There haven't been any human cases reported so far, but pet owners with sick animals say it can be very serious to treat.

Tim Dixon’s 10-month-old lab puppy is currently on the mend.

“She was running a high fever, and couldn't even walk,” Dixon says. “She was transported that afternoon to the emergency clinic here in Dartmouth.”

Officials say dogs even just sniffing urine left by other animals can transfer the bacterial disease. Dogs can also contract leptospirosis by drinking contaminated water, or if scratches on their skin come into contact with contaminated soil.

Meredith Darrah says she’s avoiding certain areas to keep her dog Olive from catching the infection.

“We're just going to try to avoid the high-concentrated dog areas, so we'll stay away from Point Pleasant Park, and Shubie, places where there are hundreds of dogs,” she says.

Darrah says she’s taking the extra precaution even though her dog has been vaccinated against the disease.
