This his been a crazy holiday season. We have had so much family down it is ridiculous. Both my parents, 3/4 of my siblings, my uncle-who is back in town again this week, my boyfriends mom, his sister, my friends, his friends. I am very grateful to be seeing everyone and also I'm starting to get worn out. I have to do this all while trying to make sure the puppy doesn't hurt himself (his favorite things are to chew on wires, eat things he shouldn't and to squeeze into tight places). Also, of course, I put off Christmas shopping to the last minute. So yesterday I had my boyfriend watch the dog while I did shopping all day. I am worried that he was a little pissed off because he couldn't really get any work done while the dog was around, and I was off spending a bunch of money. On the other hand, I think he really relished being able to be at home, alone with the dog and just relaxing a little bit. At least, I hope he enjoyed it. It's just a busy season. We are going up to his folks for Christmas as well. Which means this week we are having my uncle over for dinner, I'm having two friends over, AND I have to take the puppy in for his first round of vaccinations on Thursday. He is getting his first of three shots for parvo and distemper, and then his bordatella shot. I know later I'll have to get him a lepto shot as well, but I think it's sort of strange that no one has mentioned the rabies vaccination to me. Maybe he is like, way too young (he will be 8 weeks on Thursday) and so it just isn't worth talking about until he gets a little older. He's gonna be so mad at me when we go to the vet for shots lol he is not going to forgive me.
Speaking of Christmas gifts I still haven't got my boyfriend anything. I just have no idea what to get him. There are some sweaters he sent me so I will order those, also there's a book I think he would like and a desk calendar he specifically asked for. I might get him a really nice wallet too because he's been complaining about needing a new wallet. But idk I feel bad. Here's the thing right, how the hell do you compete with a PUPPY for Christmas? He wins lol, he definitely got me the better gift this year. I feel like sweaters and a book can't even come close. Maybe I will find some comics he doesn't have-oh that's the other problem. The puppy is too young to be left alone, so I have to wait until my boyfriend gets home from work to do anything. This is actually fine and preferable to me since I normally don't want to go anywhere or do anything. BUT I have Christmas shopping to do!
I am getting reasonably close to done tho. I wrapped all of my siblings and my moms gifts, I just need to put them in the mail. I need to wrap my dads gift and mail that. Then I need to run to get a giftcard for my grandpa, mail that, and but my grandma's stuff in the mail. oh shit and I have to send my uncle something too, and my cousin, shit ok. Maybe I have a lot left to do. But I am making progress!

hi! i am a nosy tumblr user sending unsolicited advice. this ask is being sent in response to your tags on the silly rock-eating dog with a hot pink muzzle tiktok. here is the actual advice:
please do not let your dog continue to drink dirty outside water. that is a health hazard. stagnant pools of water are disease vectors for Leptospirosis, an incredibly dangerous blood infection. even if your dog is up to date on the lepto shot, it still is not wise to let your dog sip the dirty jungle juice.
thank you for this <3 though idk if there's a difference but what I meant is that my dog drinks from dirty rain puddles, I wouldn't call it stagnant water, but maybe I'm wrong, anyway posting this for others as well

i lost my first patient today.
she was a young puppy who came in around 10 am for vomiting and diarrhea & was very yellow
i left at a little before 10 pm. & i saw they ran repeat bloodwork on her at 1 am but today was my day off so i don’t know what happened
they canceled the lepto tests so i’ll never know if that was the cause. plus the owner had a similar case last year with a puppy from a different litter. so idk if it was environmental or genetic. but idk what else i could have done
bolused her more fluids for her kidneys in the beginning. started the antibiotics sooner. gave a whole sucralfate instead of half.
idk. i wish i didn’t take the case.

i feel like the reason so many people are anti-vaccine is that vaccines work so well that they’ve never had to firsthand experience what life would be like without them. even if they don’t vaccinate their kids, most people do; herd immunity does still severely reduce the chances of there being like a polio outbreak
no one who has lost a child to measles or rubella would refuse vaccination. no one who saw a loved one with polio would refuse vaccination. no one who saw the world when it was riddled with yellow fever, bubonic plague, scarlet fever, spanish flu, smallpox, would want to go back to a time when that was the norm
i’m a vet’s assistant and i see this shit ALL the time with dog owners. everyone gets the rabies vaccine, partly because it’s required by law but also because, like, rabies is represented in the media and people know (or at least “know”) what a dog infected with rabies looks like, and it’s terrifying. most people will be lucky enough to never have a dog with parvovirus, or leptospirosis (which can transmit to people!), or a cat with felv. the people who do are WAY more likely to get dhlpp vaccines. i can’t count the people who have told me “i lost a puppy to parvo and i’m never going through that again” (whereas your average middle class dog owner is like “but do they really need all those vaccines?” idk, you want your kid to get lepto or hookworm?)
anyway it’s not that i want vaccines to work less effectively or anything but i feel like this is part of it. bums me out is all

Omg I just finished at the vet clinic there was a presentation thing going on about Lyme disease and lepto and the lady that did t handed out tickets for ppl who got answers right and I got two tickets and at the end she drew a number and I won! I got two prizes from the box omg? I got a shirt that says Meow! And a little jar with a straw to drink from bc im weird and I like sippy cups. They also brought us food from great harvest and I got a sandwich? This clinic is so nice to me omg
Also idk if I mentioned this before but I got to watch an autopsy the other day? It was so cool I think they decided it was a tumor in the stomach.

i can’t express how amazing it felt to have my vet actually appreciate my opinion. even if he ended up deciding it wasn’t lepto, the fact that he thought it was worth looking into and seriously considering even though i’m an intern made me feel professional and valued. i texted my classmates to tell them and they’re all excited for me and idk, i’m just super happy and it definitely made up for the little mistakes i made today that i was feeling stupid about lol
