thinking abt monster tropes and also that post abt how hannibal’s person suit is the controlled veneer while his true self is so unrefined and vice versa for will
then abt how hannibal lecter is like the perfect vampire on the surface with his sophistication and his extravagance and callous manipulation of sexuality. how he’s scary because despite his remoteness he still manages to blend in seamlessly with the humans around him, to the point where the woman he seduces, stuck in his thrall, refuses to believe in his monstrosity until forced to confront it herself. but, in reality, underneath that facade is an impulsive and cruel creature who delights in chaos! he consumes flesh bc he wants to, not to survive; he kills to satisfy his desire to do so, not out of compulsion. it’s him who first mentions the beauty of blood in the moonlight, and him who makes that final kill by the tearing of flesh, his jaws clamped on the throat of his prey, head rent back towards the sky. stripped of pretense, he’s the werewolf.
will, on the other hand, presents himself to others with his unshaven face and defensive posture, living east coast rustic, even preferring the company of dogs to humans. shown to us as his most comfortable in wilderness, living on a sprawl of unkept land, beyond the borders of civilization and the safety of domestication. people are unsettled by him, don’t trust him, and other him often just on some immediate instinct. however! within him!! is that terrible potential for those cold, calculated, and detached acts of inhumanity. he kills not necessarily out of need, but also not totally selfishly; he feels he has the right and subsequent responsibility of destroying those he believes, on some level, deserve it. still his bloodlust pains him, shames him, causes him to isolate and flagellate himself, allowing himself to be possessed by the monstrosity of others like sips of ichor while denying draining the source. beneath his veil, he’s the vampire.
