Bohemian Rhapsody was the biggest upcoming movie. Not only that, but the one most people were waiting to see. Queen had been very popular back in the 70’s and 80’s, but as soon as the movie was announced, fans popped up left and right. As the owner of a bar in London, close to the Wembley arena, where Bohemian Rhapsody was premiering, you decided to host a special night in your business.
As a homage to your favorite band, Queen, and the premier, you hosted a Queen Karaoke night in your bar, the same night of the premier. If some people couldn’t afford going to the premier, they could at least have fun and jam out to Queen.
The premier was three days away, and you were in the bar, decorating ahead of the premier and the karaoke night. Your friends had come over and have been helping you put up streamers, banners, posters and some Queen themed objects.
“Y/n, how does this look?” you turned, seeing your friend on the stepladder, holding the edge of the banner over the stage: Queen Night!
Stopping, you looked at the banner, “Little bit upwards,” she moved the banner, tilting it, “Stretch it a little,” she did as you told and you smiled, giving her a thumbs up. “Amazing!”
Grabbing the tack, she pinned up the edge of the banner, before stepping down and heading to where you were standing, organizing the posters to promote the bar.
“So, what else is next on the list?” she asked you as you sighed, finishing the last poster before turning to her.
“Well, we still need to reserve some seats for VIP’s, just in case, we need to create the song list, and we need to have bartenders ready.” you said, nerves going through your body as you crossed off another item from your list and added three more.
“Well, you already know both Archer and I are going to be bartending. I think three people is enough, it will be an intimate event for those that want to join. Remember, most people will be at the premier, and some will pass by the bar, but we won’t have lots of people.” she said as you nodded along to her words, before grabbing a handful of posters and placing them in her arms. “Archer! Get over here and help us with these posters!”
He emerged from behind the curtain, pushing his blonde hair out of his face as he approached both of you. “I was summoned?”
“How does backstage look? Well, the VIP Lounge.” you asked as he made two thumbs up, smile on his face. “Great! Now, we’re going to go around London and put up these posters. We’ll meet back here in 2 hours, sound good?” they both nodded as you handed Archer a stack and you took one, turning off all the lights in the bar and locking the doors.
Walking to your car, they each walked to their own, placing the posters inside the passenger side and waving off to you. Sighing, you unlocked your car, placing the posters on the seat before getting in the drivers side, and driving off.
You headed to all the local shops that knew you and would let you put your posters up, then walked around and handed them off to people, who either smiled in your direction and took the poster or shooed you away politely while walking away. After three long hours of putting up posters and giving them to locals, you headed back to the bar. As you drove, you passed the Wembley arena, where they were setting up for the premier already, a smile on your face at seeing the posters and fans outside taking pictures of the setup.
You slowed to a stop behind your bar, turning off the engine and stepping out. Keys in hand, you unlocked the doors, walking inside and looking at the decorations. Purple and pink streamers decorated the bar, 70’s Queen posters adorned the walls and lights were being fixed to create the same mood. Sighing, a smile on your face, you headed to the stage, making sure the microphone was connected and that the monitor worked.
“Well, if it isn’t the one and only Y/n in her environment.” you smiled, looking up and seeing Archer back, as he placed his keys on the bar, sitting on one of the stools. “How does it feel being back on stage again?”
“Well, technically, I’m not going to be singing, and I never was.” you said, turning on the microphone as you tapped it, the sound echoing through the bar.
“C'mon, that was your dream! Performing and singing infront of a crowd. Remember? The Summer Solstice concert at school a couple years back? The crowd loved you!” Archer said as you sighed, remembering the moment where you were no longer at school, but performing live with your band. With Archer and Lila.
“That was before..” you trailed off, a frown replacing your smile as you stopped. “Let’s not talk about that. Did you give out the posters?”
He nodded, before your phone ringing interrupted what he was going to say. Turning off the microphone, you headed to the bar and retrieved your phone. “Hello?”
“Y/n, it’s Maggie. How many shipments of chips did you say you needed?”
Smiling, you grabbed your notebook from behind the bar that had the list of what you needed for that night. “Uh, 40. 50 bags in each.”
“Okay, I just wanted to make sure. We’ll be there in 2 hours with the shipment. How does everything look?”
“Just like I imagined it would.”
“Well, let’s just hope we have an audience. I’ll see you in a bit.”
Hanging up, you turned to Archer, eyebrow raised. “You thinking what I’m thinking?”
Archer glanced at the stage, smile on his face as he nodded. “Let’s do it.”
-
It was premier night for Bohemian Rhapsody and the bar was full. Many fans weren’t able to make it to the premier, so they decided to enjoy a night tribute to Queen at the local bar. The list for karaoke seemed endless, with Queen songs playing one after the other. One of your regulars, who had known your ability to sing, had begged you to sing for everyone. Shaking your head with a smile, you dismissed her comment, as she secretly wrote your name down, with an approval from Archer.
Serving drinks left and right, you didn’t notice that the music had stopped until you heard Archer’s voice ringing through the speakers inside the bar.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we are proud to announce that Y/n will be singing a song for all of you!” eyes wide, you turned to him and shook your head. “Oh come on, Y/n! Y/n!” he led the bar in a chant of your name, as you covered your face and removed your apron, before heading to the stage, where a grinning Archer stood, holding the microphone out for you.
“You’ll pay for this.” You glared at him as he chuckled, giving you the microphone and walking offstage. Sighing, you heard the opening music to ‘Radio Ga-Ga’ as you laughed, remembering that this was your go-ton karaoke song back in middle school.
Holding up the microphone to your lips, you began singing, the bar filling with your voice and everyone’s clapping for you, alongside the beat.
-
The premier was full, fans waiting for autographs and pictures as the actors, actresses and band mates walked the carpet. While walking the red carpet, they answered questions from interviewers, posing for pictures and talking to fans. At the end of the carpet, everyone waited for the full cast.
Gwilym and Joe sighed, loopy smiles on their faces from the adrenaline. “God, I love my job.” Gwilym said, as Joe only nodded, Ben, Rami and Lucy approaching them.
“Wasn’t that fun?” Rami asked as everyone smiled and nodded. “I desperately need to get out of here though, I’m tired.”
Everyone agreed as Joe smiled, remembering what he had set up before they had arrived at the premier. “Well, I have a solution to that.”
Everyone turned to him, waiting to explain what he had in mind. By this point, Brian and Roger had approached the group, both sporting equally big smiles on their faces.
“I had each of your stylists pack something more comftorable to wear after the premier. There’s a bar close by that’s hosting a Queen Karaoke night, and I thought it would be fun for all of us to go and chill, have a couple beers.” The solution hung over everyone’s heads, as they smiled and agreed.
At least they could drink and relax after the madness that is a premier.
They each headed to their respective dressing rooms, changing and placing caps over their heads to hide their appearance as well as some shades. Heading out from the back, Joe, Gwilym, Ben, Rami and Lucy piled into a car, which took them all straight to the bar. Along the way, they talked about the questions they had been asked during the carpet walk, as well as share some pictures from tonight with each other. A while later, the car stopped infront of a bar, as they walked out of the car, adjusting their glasses and caps, before walking inside and being greeted by the smell of alcohol and the sound of music.
Heading to a booth, they all sat down, as a bartender walked over to them, and they all ordered beers. Looking up at the stage, they saw a young woman, holding the microphone and smiling. The opening notes to Somebody to Loveplayed through the speakers as she began to sing. All of them smiled, the bar clapping along and singing, as the bartender came back with drinks.
“Her voice is lovely.” Gwilym said, as they all nodded, Ben with a blush dusted on his cheeks. “Ben?”
He turned, as Gwilym pointed it out and he slapped his hands away. Turning back to the stage, they kept listening, as she moved around the stage, the lyrics projected behind her, yet she never turned to look at the screen. It’s as if she had the lyrics imprinted in her mind, she knew them by heart.
I get down (down) on my knees (knees) and I start to pray Til the tears run down from my eyes Lord, somebody (somebody) ooh somebody (Please) can anybody find me somebody to love?
Ben flagged down the bartender, as he pointed to the lovely woman on the stage. “Who is that?”
“That’s the manager, and local singer. Y/n.”
Nodding, Ben turned back to the stage, as she waved to the bartender, and he headed up with her. Holding the microphone between both of them, they belted out the lyrics to the song.
Everyday (everyday) I try and I try and I try But everybody wants to put me down They say I’m going crazy They say I got a lot of water in my brain Ah, got no common sense I got nobody left to believe in
Turning, she grabbed the guitar connected to an amp, as she began to play the song, the background song fading as she continued to strum, with a smile on her face.
Gwilym recorded Ben’s reaction and her guitar skills on his Instagram story, tagging both Ben and Brian on the story. As the guitar solo ended, the bartender next to her placed the microphone on the stand, as she approached it and kept singing what was left of the song.
As soon as the song ended, she smiled, and turned to the bartender, as he whispered in her ear and pointed to their booth. Nodding, she walked offstage, as someone from the audience walked up and chose a Queen song to karaoke to.
“Well, I was told you guys were looking for the manager.” she stopped infront of the table, placing her hands on it and leaning. “What can I help you all with?”
“Your singing was amazing,” Ben said as she blushed and smiled.
“Thank you. I was a little rusty, haven’t sang in a couple years.” she stood upright and held out her hand, “I’m Y/n. It’s nice to meet all of you.”
Ben took her hand, shaking it with a smile on his face. “I’m Ben.”
“Gwilym.”
“Joe.”
“Rami.”
“Lucy.”
She shook everyone’s hands before pausing, eyebrows furrowed. “Come with me.”
They stood up and headed backstage to the VIP area, as she led them to a couch. They sat and she smiled, joining them.
“Well, I’ll be damned. The actual cast in my bar.”
Ben took off his glasses and cap, as the rest did the same. “How did you know?”
“Not everyone has you guys’ names, especially those who are the talk of the town because of their so-called movie premiere. What are you guys doing here when you could be at your premiere?”
“We needed a break and a getaway.” Joe said, as she nodded.
“Yeah, I can imagine that it’s a stressful event for all of you.” she said, before getting up and heading to the fridge in the room. “Beers anyone?”
They nodded as she fetched a couple, before bringing them over to them. Sitting down, she flicked off the cap from her beer and drank, smile on her face.
“How long have you been a bar manager?” Gwilym asked as she took another swig of her beer.
“Give or take, 3 years now.”
“So why bartending?”
She sat back in her seat, as they listened intently. “Well, I wanted to do something different, believe me. I wanted to go into acting, or singing, and do what I loved. But, I just never found the drive to pursue it. So, I bought this business three years back, and with the help of Maggie and Archer, it became so much more.” she smiled, “But, I guess we’ll never know, maybe in the future I’ll pursue singing or acting. But in the meantime, I love my business. It’s not high pay, but it pays the bills.”
“It’s really nice, cozy and intimate.”
“That was the vibe I was going for. I wanted this place to be somewhere that people can come and relax, away from our chaotic world and their problems. Which is why I host a karaoke night every once in a while. I’ve done trivia, but it’s not as fun as karaoke.”
“And because of the premiere, she chose to do a Queen karaoke night.” Archer walked through the doors, smile on his face and holding his own beer. Sitting down next to her, he shook their hands.
“This is Archer,” you introduced him to them, “He’s the one who pushed me to sing tonight. He’s also my best friend since we were in primary school.”
Ben thanked the gods he was just a friend. He had taken a liking to you in these past couple minutes, something he hadn’t felt in a while. He felt happy, content, relaxed. Lots of mixed emotions, but emotions nonetheless.
“Why does it feel like we’ve known each other for years when we just met a couple minutes ago?” she asked as everyone laughed and nodded.
“We instantly click.”
-
All of you spent the rest of your time in the lounge, enjoying beers, and listening to the crowd in the bar and the singing from the stage. The night went on, and everyone started to slowly leave, as it reached 3am and the bar began to empty itself. Heading out of the lounge, with the cast behind you, you headed to the bar, thanking the last couple customers before locking up.
“So, guess this is it. Are any of you staying in town for the next couple days?” you asked as they nodded.
“We leave in 5 days.” Rami answered as you nodded, grabbing a notebook and writing down your number and directions.
“Here is my number and my address. Feel free to drop by anytime. I’ll be heading out to Rome in a couple days, so we should meetup before we all leave.” you said, as they nodded.
“Wait, did you say Rome?” Ben asked as you nodded. “That’s where I’m going. I’m filming for an upcoming movie and that’s exactly where I’m heading to.”
Gwilym and Joe shared a smile, watching the exchange happen.
“Well, both of you should leave together. How about that?” Rami said as you smiled, nodding.
“I would like that.”
Ben smiled, nodding, as they each said their goodbyes, before leaving the bar and catching a cab back to the hotel.
-
A couple days later, you received a text from Ben, with directions to a nearby restaurant where they wanted to meet. Answering the text, you changed into something more casual, before heading out and to the restaurant. As you arrived, you noticed lots of photographers outside, knowing they had probably seen the cast inside and wanted pictures. Waking inside, you told the host your party was here before walking through the restaurant, and noticing Ben walk up to you, smile on his face.
“We’re glad you could make it.” he said, as you smiled and nodded.
“I’m glad you guys invited me.”
He led you to the table, a hand placed on your back as everyone cheered when they saw you. A blush on your cheeks, they each stood and hugged you, welcoming you as Ben pulled out the seat for you. Sitting down, you smiled at each of them, eyes trailing over to see the Roger Taylor and Brian May sitting down towards the other side of the table.
“Hi Y/n, lovely to meet you.” Brian said, as you smiled and nodded.
“It’s lovely to meet you, sir. You’re an inspiration to me.”
“Aw,” he smiled, “Your guitar skills are incredible. How long have you played?”
“4 years.”
“I’m impressed, darling,” he said, as Roger was next to introduce himself.
“So, what would everyone like to eat?” the waitress approached the table, notepad in hand as you grabbed the menu, everyone else doing the same, before each of you said your choices for a meal. She grabbed all the menus, before leaving you talking amongst yourselves.
“So, when do you leave for Rome?” Ben asked you as you turned to him.
“Tomorrow, actually. You?”
“I’m leaving tomorrow in the morning. I have a jet waiting for me.”
You smiled, and nodded, “That sounds very lavish and comftorable.”
“If you’d like, you can come with me.” Ben offered, as your smile stayed as well as a blush coated your cheeks, “That is, if you’d like.”
You nodded, “That would be nice, thank you.”
The other boys had stopped their conversations and watched both of you, as both of you looked up, noticing their eyes on you.
“So, Y/n, why are you going to Rome?” Lucy asked you as you sighed.
“I don’t know. I wanted to have a break from the bar, and I figured Rome was just the place to be.” you said, as Lucy nodded.
“Well, it’s a beautiful place, and I think you’ll love it. Especially with a great companion with you.” Lucy winked at you as your cheeks were dusted in a light red blush.
The rest of dinner was spent talking, eating and sharing memories about their times on set. It felt like all of you had been friends for a long time, and had only been catching up after a couple years.
The rest of dinner had ended, and all of you walked out of the restaurant together. More paparazzi had appeared and were waiting outside the restaurant, as you were a little overwhelmed by the flashing of cameras and pushing of the crowd. Ben stabilized you and placed a hand on your back, helping you get through the crowd and to the group limo. Sighing, you sat down and raised your eyebrows.
“That was.. something.” you sighed, as Gwilym nudged you.
“It’s overwhelming sometimes. Here, give me your car keys so our driver can take your car back to your apartment.”
Nodding, you fished your keys from your bag, as he handed them to his driver who then left the limo and got into your car, driving it home, as Joe took a seat in the drivers’ side and took you all back to your apartment to pick up the driver, before heading to a local beach.
The cool air of the beach soothed your nerves as Ben approached you. Standing on the pier, you watched the waves, as the rest of the cast joined. All of you stood peacefully, enjoying each others’ presence and listening to the sound of the roaring waves.
“Beautiful, isn’t it?” you asked, turning to Ben and noticing him looking your way. Blushing, you both looked away, as the rest of the cast walked away, giving you guys space.
“Yeah, it is.” Ben paused, before looking back at you. “Y/n? Can I ask you a question?”
You looked over at him, nodding with a smile. Turning your body to him, you noticed he took a step towards you, his and coming up to hold yours. His face mirrored yours, smile on his, as his thumb rubbed small circles over yours.
“I.. I’ve really enjoyed the time I’ve spent with you over the past couple days. I haven’t been able to get you off my mind, and I just hope you feel the same. Would you, want to go on a date with me sometime?”
Your smile grew, as you squeezed his hand, getting him to look up at you. His eyes connected with yours, smile on his face, yet nerves coursing through his veins. His hands shook, as you held them close.
“I would love to.”
He sighed out in relief, before he let go of your hands, bringing you in for a hug. His arms went around your waist, your head resting on his chest as he rested his chin on your head. A smile adorned his face as he looked behind you, noticing the rest of the cast cheering and waving with smiles on their faces. Letting go of him, you opted to hold his hand instead, as you walked to where the rest of the cast was.
“So, are you happy we ditched the premiere and went to the bar instead?” Rami asked you as you laughed and nodded, looking up at Ben with a smile on your face.
“I am.”
