IT SEEMED LIKE HE HAD JUST SET THE PHONE DOWN. The tengu stood behind the register tapping a chisel against a stone. Every now and then his wings would shift, careful not to bump into things.

The jingle of the bells attached to the door cued mismatched hues to scan the store. Was everything in place? He’d hate to have sprigs and the like scattered about the floor- No one would want to work in a messy place.

Ajari steps out from behind the register and waves at the visitor, “Good morning.”

HE BREATHED IN THE SCENT OF HERBS, INCENSE AND TEA. The tengu was fiddling with a bunch of lavender, gingerly fastening a strip of string to them. This was the last bundle of the day. Hopefully theyd last until the store closed, but lavender was one of the most popular products.

A hand comes up to adjust his mask when he hears the bells attached to the door. The corners of Ajari’s lips lift and he waves from behind the register.
