Lindenwood MCC: Spring Year 1 #113

Anne missed Franco dearly. She kept hoping that he'd come rescue her. She felt as though she was going insane. Sometimes, she swore that the shadows cast by the candle flickering on the wall looked like faeries, or perhaps some other fantastical creature. She started to lose track of how many days she had left until she was free again.

One day, Anne woke up in the middle of the night to a visitor. She gasped when she saw a giant blue bunny.

Am I dreaming?

"You aren't dreaming, my child," the strange creature spoke in a sweet tone, like a bellchime. "I am Pazuzu. The Fae send me to those who cry out in loneliness and despair."

Anne pouted, "I am not lonely! I...I just...I..."

Pazuzu gave a knowing smile. "You want to know how to make your husband love only you."

Anne shrugged. "Why, is there some magic potion that can make him devoted only to me? Some spell you can teach me, or perhaps a boon the Fae could grant me?"

Pazuzu stared at Anne evenly. Finally, Anne grew uncomfortable with being under their knowing gaze, and turned to face the wall.

Pazuzu giggled. "The only way that you'll get what you want, my child, is if you kill everything else he loves."

And with a whooosh, the strange bunny vanished.

The next morning, the royal steward came by to collect the Bellwethers' taxes. The family had managed to scrape together just enough to pay everything that they owed the crown...

Unfortunately, the same could not be said for what Franco owed his liege. He was short by §200, which meant that his family would have to work a shift in the Montannes' gem mine next season.

Anne didn't care that the shop was full of customers. She went right up to Athelina and poked her in the chest.

"You stay away from Franco, you hear me?!"

Athelina looked haughtily back at Anne.

"Absolutely not. I love him. Besides, he told me that you were in support of our arrangement. And to think I once admired you..."

Anne felt tears welling up in her eyes.

I can't let this bitch see me cry.

She ran out of the shop as fast as she could. Oh, she'd get her revenge for this.

On the last day of spring, the second round of lambs for the season was born.

The field full of baby lambs made Sayer think about starting his own family someday.

Thanks to the lambs, the Bellwethers would have plenty of milk, butter, and cheese for the next season.

Word of their cheese shop spread, and they certainly would have enough money to pay Anne's jail fine.

Franco woke up the next morning with a splitting headache and a nasty cough.

As luck would have it, his only ram escaped in the night. One of the party guests must have left the gate to the sheepfold unlocked.

The rest of the family was sick as well, so Lewis the Healer came by with a pot of cabbage soup for everyone.

Franco was already feeling a little better, and gave Lewis a basket of milk, cream, and butter as thanks.

While her dad's birthday party raged on inside, Mariana took Edmund, the soldier she had a crush on, out to the sheep fold.

"And these are all our sheep! I spend a lot of time out here...it's just so peaceful and quiet."

"Most of the ewes had lambs at the beginning of the season. Don't you just love all the baby animals in the spring—"

"Mariana."

Mariana spun around and met Edmund's eyes. Her heart was racing. And then suddenly, he leaned in and kissed her. He was a bit awkward and rough, but she couldn't have asked for a more romantic first kiss.

It was finally time for Franco's birthday party. Many of the Lindenwood settlers stopped by to wish him well.

After Franco aged up into an Elder, he challenged Athelina to a game of chess.

"Don't expect any mercy from me, old man."

Normally, Anne took care of these types of things. But he didn't mind. It gave him another excuse to see Athelina.

"Oh, Franco," she giggled. "I'd love to."

Franco grabbed his birthday cake, then headed on his way with a mischievous grin on his face.

Almost nightly, Athelina would stop by after Franco closed the shop.

While he felt bad that Anne was stuck in jail, it was nice to have lots of uninterrupted time with his new sweetheart.

Franco tried not to think about how Athelina spending every night in their marriage bed would make Anne feel.

As the heir to Bellwether Farm, Mariana spent quite a bit of time with the family's herd of sheep. She enjoyed the peace and quiet of the fold. Sheep were excellent listeners.

Some of the raw milk would be separated into milk and cream.

The cream would be churned into butter.

And the butter, milk, cream, and cheese would be sold in the Bellwethers' small shop.

It's been awhile since I posted a Lindenwood update! We last left off on the Bellwether round with Anne being sent to jail for fighting in public.

Twice a day, one of the guards brought Anne a simple meal. In the mornings, it was always porridge. Supper was always some type of soup.

Anne hadn't tasted such bland food in a long time.

Every night before bed, Anne received one bucket of ice-cold water for washing up.

The cramped, cold cell made her miss her husband, Franco, and the wide, open spaces on their farm.
