With the show still connecting Sun Wukong with the JTTW group (narrative and thematic parallels!) and the original stories as the base, there’s big likelyhood that Tripitaka and the others were just as flawed people as Sun Wukong is. The potential that they were as a whole a dysfunctional group is tantalizing.

(That said, I got the feeling that he moved on from them a bit in season 3?)

Not bad, but flawed, trying their best and making many mistakes.

The show has only revealed little glimpses of the Heroes of Old. We as the audience saw the most personal glimpse through Sun Wukong’s perception, which reveals only one angle.

We don’t know what those characters were like when on their own or viewed through other characters’ perceptions.

Sun Wukong's perception of himself as an outsider is most likely true, since LMK draws a lot from the JTTW novels. I believe they did hurt him with their words. Though, I doubt they did it intentionally in the show.

And it’s possible to likely that there were conflicts among the others we wouldn’t have seen (yet) because of Sun Wukong’s limited POV. What did they clash over, what parts of their personalities crashed against each other, what were their insecurities?
