Urscream was inspired by the Vanilluxe line, since a lot of people call that line lazy... i actually really like it, so I tried to do my own take on it. Polar bears just felt fitting cuz ice and stuff (also, they’re cute)

Nebulach is based off of rorschach inkblots. The first stage had mothman in mind, but the other two are just making something based off of the shape.

Design Changes

Neither of these two have had many changes. Urscream is pretty much the same, with the tub having a simpler pattern, and the claws in the final stage simpler claws. This is the first draft of Nebulach (the last stage had another segment beforehand).

Foils

The first foil was supposed to be strawberry ice cream, but it kind of looks like red velvet instead? Second is Nebulach’s colors (looks kind of like cookies and cream, unintentional but cool), third is just Ice Colors

I have no idea what i was doing for Nebluach. red/white/black is just Cool, and 3rd one is like.... because magenta is technically Not Real, green contrasts with it, green and black balances it out..

Sprites

Yeah Nebulach being lineless is on purpose. Weird fuck

Hi!! these are Poltegoat and Luscangel, the monsters representing the Shadow and Radiant types! They are going to be used by the main character and rival of Ban Mah. I plan to do this format of post for all of the type reps (not sure if im going to do other monsters like this ^^;)

I’ve done an image like the first one for Micelium (here!), and plan to make another post with it’s opposite monster, shiny colorings, and pixel art

The theme for Poltegoat is that it starts off as a monster that’s very trusting, but goes through a stage of doubt and worry, but eventually becomes someone who learns to trust again while being able to stand up for itself

For Luscangel, I didn’t really have a theme in mind besides “funny snail with angel motifs with a candle on it’s back,” until I also got the idea for it to turn into lava. I did want it to look very friendly, but it’s harder to make it not look friendly. I also thought of making nods to the 9 choirs of angels, but it really didn’t go through except for maybe the last stage (it is very hard to convey human like appearance and clothes in snails).

1st Page: Design Changes

I had originally planned to do a before and after with the designs like I did for Micelium, but I got carried away with it. You can see their first drafts (and the first-first drafts of the first stages here) The general gist is:

POLTEGOAT:

Red coloring got swapped for the blue (Conveys the fact that it is a shadow monster better)

The first stage didn’t have the heart marking

Second stage only had it’s front paws disconnected, and the fur puff is on the paw instead of the leg. The tail was also shorter

The third stage lost it’s back fur tuft (?) and gets marking on the back, and blue accents on the leg instead.The horn goes around the ear, and the ear sticks up. It also loses it’s goatee (bc I forgot about it..) The snake tail also gets eyes

LUSCANGEL:

First stage gets yellow at the bottom

Second stage gets more detail overall- starts to introduce the concept of it turning into lava, and gets an actual shell (that’s supposed to represent molten rock!) instead of still having a glass shell

Third stage gets a canon at it’s shell, and is fully obsidian with yellow and red markings - the shell isn’t just made of glass anymore. Also more of the lava motif appears at the end since it’s turning black. The canon rim works as a halo and I thought that the red spots on it would be good at conveying the eyes of higher up angels, as well as the multiple wings

2nd Page: Foils

Since monsters get captured in cards, I thought it’d be fitting to call their alternate coloration “foils”. It’s basically the same concept as Shinies from Pokemon, but I wanted to have multiple because 1) there are shiny hunters that unironically think that shinies being more common lowers their value, and I like that shinies are easier to get, so there being multiple types of foils balences that idea, and 2) because they look cool

Poltegoat: The first foil is its “beta coloring” with the red instead of the blue, the second foil takes the colors of it’s counterpart Luscangel, and the third stage is supposed to represent how its type is “Shadow.” I’m not sure how well that’s conveyed, since I didn’t want it to be all dark colors, but I think the bright purple and blue contrast well with the black and dark blue, and it looks cool, and that’s what matters

Luscangel: The first foil is basically the trans flag. It was suggested by a friend and I liked the idea, and it looks great! I think it’s my favorite. The second is Poltegoat’s coloring, and the third is because of how it’s the “Radiant” type. Radiant is basically light and fire. It’s basically just the color of fire, I think the shell makes a good contrast and makes the other colors look brighter and warmer :)

Pixel Art

The sizes of these are 32x32, 40x40, and 56x56, and then upscaled to where they’re 10 times bigger on both sides, so they’re not super blurry. The sizes of the canvas are based on their sizes:

Poltegoat 1/2/3 : 1′6″ (46cm)* / 3′ (91cm) / 5′2″ (157cm)**

Luscangel 1/2/3 : 0′8″ (20cm) / 2′4″ (71cm)*** / 6′3″ (191 cm)****

there are a LOT of guys on here, including redesigns! i'm done with half of these guys's sprites, and ill post the other half once im done with all of them :)

first off we have luscangel, this one is a redesign. you can see the original design for it here. im a lot happier with these designs, and i feel like they have more character, and i can visualize how they move beyond just being a snail.

these guys are called airlioon, and im really happy with them! if you scroll through the blog long enough you can find the first draft versions of them, but it's really low quality lol. i love how they turned out, and i think theyre already some of my favorite designs.

they probably go around picking up other monsters and things. their bodies have the rubber texture of balloons, and they have a bad habit of flying too high up without thinking about how far they'll have to go down

next up is swinedle! the tail was hardest to do for me. they were made purely for the pun. i imagine the first stage hiding in people's purses to eat their gold while looking cute. these guys have two bellies, one for actually digesting food, and one where all their metals go.

this is heorate! a golden hog that can conduct electricity very well! they do not get along with swindles. they're known for having great noses and being able to find treasure or people

these are ilyêupod, the first to be designed on this sheet. theyre love bug isopods. im not sure if im completely happy with these designs, but i think theyre good enough :,D

this is lendibag! little punching bag of a ladybug. you can squish it like a stress toy and it'd be fine with it! silly little guy

Toxifarce is supposed to be poisonous frog (eventually became more toady) and a clown/mime

Suncrower is a mix between a sunflower and scarecrow (kinda-)

Design Changes

Other versions of Toxifarce can be seen here, and here , though this design was made May 21st, 2022 ( I never posted the page). There’s slight changes made to accommodate it having colors (since i usually design things without color in mind... which is something i need to work on), and make it look more appealing in general. its the stripes on the belly and the back- its a softer shape to resemble poisonous. I had a really hard with Toxifarce’s design, especially the last stage, for a While. watching amphibia helped me design it lol. First stage is unchanged because its just so cute... the only change is the pattern it has.

I didn’t mean to make it the nonbinary flag colors. i always thought that it’d be white/black/purple, and i added a yellow to complement the purple and since i needed another color to make it look good.... happy accident

this was suncrower’s original design, also never posted! the only change is the last stage (and, as you can see on the main page, i struggled with it also, lol)

Foils

I decided to change how I did the foil sheet this time! the sheet is way cleaner and its recolored sprites now. I think this looks way nicer, and it saves me time. I also included the color palettes, and ordered them the same way so its clearer what color is swapping where. I will probably re-do other foil sheets to look like this at some point.

Toxifarce: The 1st palette was supposed to resemble toxic frogs more, and i just thought it looked nice. 2nd foil is suncrower’s palette. the brown doesnt replace the purple in the first stage since suncrower-1 doesnt have it. the 3rd foil is supposed to represent how it’s toxic, so i chose purple + pink (poison+warning color/looks nice), black, and a radioactive green

Suncrower: The 1st set it supposed to represent the different colors corn have, though I’m not sure how clear that is. what matters is that it looks cool. 2nd foil is toxicroak’s colors, and the 3rd is supposed to represent how it’s nature-y. I didn’t want to make it just green, so i made it pink (because it complements the green, looks nice, and there are pink plants), and brown (bark, mud)

Sprites

i kept the new sprite style. I’m still trying to figure it out, like when to color the inside lines or not, but i’m really liking it! It’s based off of pokemon’s style, but i feel like im mixing my own style, which is good! i like it.

Dracumulus was originally inspired by the Togekiss line and the vietnamese lions from Lunar New Year. The design has lost some of those elements, but some of those features are still there! Dracumulus is supposed to go from a bird, a wyvern, to a dragon that doesn’t need wings to fly. I’m really proud of this guy’s design :) I imagine it floats all the time

Canaroc was originally inspired by Rhyperior! It keeps the brown and the horn, but it’s pretty vague (which is good, imo). It also has canary features. Originally it had wings. The design overall hasn’t changed much, but I thought the wings cluttered the design a bit too much (along with the cage-belly). It still keeps a bit of the wings in the ears though!

I also like how it has a mix of different animal features- reptile, bird, and mammal (the paw pad and furry tail). I think it’s fun

I really like the contrast of these designs, and I think they work really well together :)

Design Pages

Dracumulus: You can see it’s first design here. I have earlier sketches of it but the design is basically the same. The stage with the most changes is the last one, with the first draft being able to switch between four legs or two legs and two wings. Second stage has a few tweeks. First stage is the same.

Canaroc: Also doesn’t have much changes besides the wings, tail, and belly pattern.

Both of them dont have many changes! I always liked their designs from the start so there wasn’t much to fix.

Foils

If you haven’t read the first post, “foils” are basically the same as shinies from Pokemon!

Dracumulus: First set of shinies are based off of clouds at sunset, second set is Canaroc’s color palette, and third is based off of clouds and the sky (the last stage having more thundercloud colors) for the Type foil. The third stages have colors moved around like normal Dracumulus, except for the Canaroc-colored one

Canoroc: it’s first shiny is based off of smoky quartz with flourite, second set is based off of Dracumulus, and third set are browns that I think convey rockiness. Dracumulus-palette keeps the third stage as different colors.

Pixel Art + Heights

These are upscaled by 10! I don’t have any old sprites of these guys, and none of the other monsters from now on will.

Jelvysprites are based off of jellyfish (specifically the bloodybelly cone jelly and these types of lightning:

(x) (pixies aren’t in the picture, but they inspired the “eyes” for the first two stages)

cruistacean are based off of the blue swimmer crab, with the first stage and last stage being a paper boat and a motorboat respectively.

both of them are stages of the life of sea creatures!

Design Changes

Neither of these have had many design changes because they haven’t existed for so long. other sketches of jelvysprite-3 are on the main image, and the other two were drawn only once before:

Foils

Jelvysprite: first set of foils are based off of the genderfluid flag, and the second is cruistacean’s palette, and the third set are supposed to be electric colors- bright yellow, blue, green, and magenta. i hope its not too eye-strainy ;^^

Cruistacean: first set is based off of the aroace flag, second set is jelvysprite’s palette, and the third are just supposed to be water-y colors.

Pixel Art

I tried doing something that emulates Pokemon’s box sprites, and I think I like them more, so i will be doing sprites like that instead of front facing ones. I will eventually make them for Poltegoat, Luscangel, Micelium, Powketroo, Dracumulus, and Canaroc, though i dont know when

1'3" / 38 cm 2'0" / 61 cm 3'11" / 119 cm (this only goes up to it’s head, not the halo or puffy shoulders)

Micelium is a monster with two brains, in the “mushroom” and the “mouse.” The change it goes through is supposed to be how at first they have a fine relationship, but eventually grow angry at each other (the top head wanting more control, and the bottom head being annoyed). The last stage shows their compromise, and how they have equal control and are stronger because of it.

Powketroo was originally based off of a Nokemon (2nd stage), but I thought of it as a monster that was really curious, but that usually looks like it wanting to punch something. The older Powketroos put them in their pockets so they can calm down and don’t get in trouble. The first Powketroo has “kneepads” of fur

Design Pages:

Re-using Micelium’s old page, so I made an entire one for Powketroo. I’m not sure if I will continue to do it like this though. Please say if you prefer before/after or just the drawings ^^

MICELIUM:

Most of it is already said here. The only changes here are that

Micelium 1 has a brighter color

Micelium 3 has claws on it’s feet (not sure why it wasn’t there in the first place-)

POWKETROO

Powketroo 1 is the same (besides the eyes), no before and after, I’m not sure if I like the desaturated blue more or not I’m happy with it either way though

Powketroo 2 gets pupils, and its also a bit more straight and less round. It also gets kangroo claws, and has fur on it’s knees (?), showing that it doesn’t need the kneepads from the first stage anymore. The tail also isn’t curled up all the time.

Powketroo 3 has the most changes: the earbrow’s fluff goes on the bottom, it gets pupils. The shoulder fluffs do not have a yellow accent, the yellow feathers on the first one at the back of it’s tail are just a big tuft of fur now, and it gets claws on its paws. Also, it is usually it’s big tail, that’s similar to an arm. I think it looks more intimidating and unique now

Foils:

Foils were explained in Luscangel’s and Poltegoat’s post, but to sum it up, they’re basically shinies from Pokemon.

Micelium: It’s first Foil is based off of your typical zombie- greens and purple for rotting skin and guts, with the mushroom being brain colored. The second foil is a palette swap with Powketroo- this was hard to do for both of them because they don’t share the same amount of colors, and because colors on one doesn’t really look the best on the other. I think it turned out okay though. The third one is based off of the Foil I gave it in my first post for it, but I modified the colors a bit and I’m happier with how it is now. Lab Rat Micelium isn’t really anymore though.

Powketroo: The first Foil didn’t have an idea in mind. I didn’t know what to do so I just went to a color palette generator. second one is with Micelium’s colors- this one was hard to do but i ended up not using the pink since the other three are more relevant to Micelium. The third one is supposed to represent Physical typing, which is basically like the fighting type from Pokemon. I associated orange with it, and black/white because of karate uniforms, but it kind of looks more like a fox? I think with the other combinations i tried looked worse, so I’m happy :)
