Tell us a little about yourself: I’m ChiaRoseKuro, but please call me Kuro or Chro - I’m okay with Chia, but Rose just makes me feel awkward. I go by they/them pronouns, if you ever wish to refer to me, and I’d love to make a career out of creative writing someday, but I’m working towards graduating from college as an English/Mathematics secondary teacher. I’ve been writing since 2013, roleplaying since 2011-2012 and editing graphics since 2012, but I really found my groove for fanfiction writing in 2017. It wasn’t until late 2019 that I began looking into contributions to fanzines, though - and what started off as a half-joking ramble/rant to Suga and Nooty about the lack of BnHA post-apocalyptic zines back in January turned into Phoenix: From the Ashes. I’ve been told I’m intimidating at first glance… but if you do happen to think that, even after reading this mini-interview, then you’ll probably change your mind once you hear the things my brain comes up with (even when I’m not in the grips of my persistent insomnia).

What other experiences do you have with zines and/or modding? This is my first time heading and modding a zine - and whilst I did act as the communications moderator for one other zine, I parted ways with them due to internal issues. I’m currently a writer for the Heroes Ever After zine and another BnHA zine, and I’m also a moderator for several Discord community servers (one of which is the TodoBakuDeku server), but I’ve had far more experience in other fandom events - I’ve organized and ran six gift exchanges and one mini-bang in the past half-year, and I’ve participated in several other events since 2014. Who is your favourite BnHA character? That’s such an unfair question, considering that I can’t pick favourites to save my life. My usual choices oscillate between Bakugou Katsuki, Todoroki Shouto, Shinsou Hitoshi, Toga Himiko, Monoma Neito and Kuroiro Shihai, so that’s why I couldn’t add any names to my spotlight graphic. It just wouldn’t fit if I tried to list them all, haha…

What is your favourite post-apocalyptic AU? Zombies! It’s a bit of a love-hate relationship because I’ve had recurring, episodic dreams about them since I was around 14-15, but there’s something about the grittiness of a zombie apocalypse story that really excites and interests me. Also, watching characters die in zombie media is almost always entertaining (just don’t talk to me about the ending for Train to Busan).

What are you looking forward to most in the zine? I’m honestly so honoured that so many people are taking an interest in one of my not-so-secret pleasures, but I’m really looking forward to seeing all our future contributors coming together to share their love of post-apocalyptic AUs with me and my fellow mods. I can’t wait to see how people are going to reimagine the BnHA characters in all these settings, and I can’t wait to share it all in our zine when it’s completed!

What’s your favourite type of chocolate? (asked by Nooty) I can’t eat much chocolate - something about it makes me sick - but I like white chocolate. Yes, I know, that’s mostly just milk instead of actual cocoa, but I can eat a little more of that without feeling sick (and Cadbury Dream is delicious). 

What’s your star sign? (asked by Suga) The quirky Aquarius, which is probably not a surprise to anyone who knows me. I always feel a mixture of amusement and disbelief whenever I realize how much I relate to Aquarian traits.

How would you fare in your favourite post-apocalyptic AU? (asked by Kuro) Quite frankly, I don’t think I’d make it very far. I may be an insomniac who’s small, vicious and fast in a pinch, but I don’t have much stamina. If I can escape the initial chaos, I don’t think I’d really survive beyond those few days, and the constant paranoia from having to watch for zombies and unfriendly humans would wreak havoc with my over-imaginative mind. I think I’d much rather get turned straight away - at least it wouldn’t hurt after a while.

a fun update/back story to ‘river water for brains’ aha

so for my 2-day break, I was feeling a little better but my nose was still running, so the internet told me to get some fresh air and I did

and then I found a nearby lake and stuff, also a storm drain? And there was a tunnel in it and everything

so I couldn’t go inside all the way because there was water and my shoes would be ruined

so my smart genius brain thought it’d be a good idea to make a rock path way, with the rocks in the lake— so my smart genius brain told me to take off my socks and shoes so I don’t ruin them, and then I walked in the water on the stones to get the nice rocks that could be used as stepping stones down the water tunnel

You may be thinking, “oh no this is where it happened”

but no

No, it happened when I was walking over to the tunnel entrance with the rock as big as my head, I think it was made out of cement or something, but point was, it was very heavy and I was carrying it with 1 hand because I wanted to keep one dry

And then half way, I had to put it down for a break, and then it slipped off my hand bc of the moss, and then fell on top of my ankle :’) blood was forming and it felt like hell

It hurt a lot, but I really wanted to make a path way, so I sucked it up and picked the stone back up. The adrenaline made me run with the fucking rock and probably broken foot- I felt kinda like, “well since I fucked up already, if I fuck up again, it won’t matter bc I’ll have the pathway”

and then the moment I stepped back onto the water from the grass, I slipped in the moss, on the same ankle, and I slid and fell on my ass, scraping my ankle on the moss floor.

it’s not over yet tho

I got back up after sitting in my own shit, took my phone and stuff out my pockets that luckily didn’t get wet, and then I stood up with the fucking stone that splashed river water all over my clothes

and I opened the gate to the tunnel, I walked inside of the disgusting gravel water and I put down the last cement block

I hit my head on the gate lightly the way out, and the way out, got out with my phone and sat on the fucking ground for a good 30 minutes. I didn’t know how I was gonna go back home because I needed to bike but I already skinned my knee a few days ago, and my ankle was, well, bleeding and bruised

anyways, that was my inspo

Oh and the update was, I’m going to the hospital later

At first, i said nagito, but then bread was like, “no Chiaki, bc at least she wouldn’t end the goddamn world” and they had a point. And I got confused, like oh shit that’s right, and then I started thinking of the other characters I simp for that won’t cause chaos, and it’s pretty hard;;;; I have to factor in, personal biases, how they would react, how it would fuck up the dgr universe, how it would fuck up earth. AND ALL OF THIS IS RUNNING IN MY MIND DESPITE IT BEING LITERAL FUCKING FICTION AND I CANT-

I want to say nagito, but if he was real he probably wouldn’t like me, and instead I would unleash a little despair/hope/arsonist shit sticker to the rest of the world- I could potentially end the world if I get him to exist. Nifididifjdjfifd someone save me from myself-
