His ears are ringing. If from the crushing silence or from the yelling that preceded it, he couldn’t tell, but it makes him grimace in annoyance anyway.

He softly bumps the back of his head against the wall, staring straight ahead as Gaby, seated on the ground in a mirror of his own pose, shifts a little in his direction. Somehow, it makes him smile.

“Done being mad at me?” he asks, more amused in tone than he is in spirit, fully aware that it’s like waving a red flag in front of a bull. Maybe he’s just waiting for the moment he will finally be trampled to death. Not the worst way to go, not if it comes from her, at least.

“Fuck you,” she only says, but it lacks bite. They always reach a point when the fight drains out of her, and if he cared to he might claim that this means he has won the argument.

But, well, he doesn’t care to. He was barely arguing to begin with, because what is the point? He is content with playing defense while she uses him to unload everything that’s been suffocating her throughout the day—it’s nice to be good for something as a partner, at the end of the day: he has learned he is no good at preventing harm, he might as well offer to be a means to an end. It won’t hurt him anyway.

“That would hurt my feelings,” he says, lightly. “If I had any, that is.”

Well, perhaps he should say it won’t hurt him much.

3. What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?

From this year: militat omnes amans - my Napoleanic Wars AU oneshot. I had such fun doing a deep dive into the research for this and getting to smush my two favourite things (Napolenic Wars and Bridglar) together was such a joy or the wild silence which I wrote after my family holiday in Dorset.

5. What work of yours got more feedback than you expected?

with my body I thee worship. It was written in an afternoon sitting in a coffee shop and it was the first thing that I'd written for about a month. To get any feedback on it at all was an unexpectant pleasure and a real joy!

7. If you use song lyrics, which artist's songs did you pull from the most?

I haven't really used any song lyrics for my fic titles this year. The ones that comes to mind are Home Created Come To Heal where the title comes from Wordsworth's poem 'Calm is all nature as a restless wheel' and 'he whose name was writ on water' which is a line from John Keats' epigraph.

I saw you reblog the: the hand, the heart, the head for Geralt, Ciri and Yennifer and now I cannot stop thinking about how it would be in case of Gaby+Napoleon+Illya. Gaby is probably a clear candidate for the head but what about Illya and Napoleon?

Hiiii! That’s a good question, and I rambled about it more than I intended to LOOOL sorry <3

First of all, I have seen multiple takes about what the head/heart/hands thing means, like a leadership model (about working because you think you should, because you genuinely feel an affiliation to said work or because you are told to, if I remember correctly), or thinking with your head/heart/hands, or using logic/emotions/action as a means of persuasion.

Usually when I see that meme I think of it more in terms of the head as the more logical and focused one of the trio, the heart as the more emotional one and the hands as the one who is more action oriented.

SO for the trio it’s not really cut and dry, I can see it multiple ways. I agree that Gaby should be the head at the end of the day, I do think she has a temper and a tendency to default to anger/defensiveness when she feels emotional but I don’t see her as a very emotional person, and instead she seems pretty logical and focused. In the movie she really played her role well, even though that was her first mission and it was a complicated one (playing triple agent! Your first time! Like that takes some focus and control), she came across as a pretty logical person to me.

But I also could see Napoleon in the role of the head, because of how he seems to always be running through data and options basing on what he observed, he seems good at being calculating and behaving himself in accordance to the conclusion he came to, I definitely see him as the type to outsmart his way out of situations.

If the head goes to Gaby, though, I’d say Napoleon is the hands, because---okay, for one it’s funny. He’s a thief and he’s good “with his hands” looool. But I also do see him as a pretty action-oriented person, that looks at the practical things that he can do when in a sticky situation, and I feel like when he’s stressed about something and he feels like he’s not in control he’d strive to get that control back by doing something about it.

Illya would also be a candidate for the hands though, especially because it’s the role that is often assigned to the protector of the group, the one that is going to physically fight and be the literal hands (in a brute force way) of the arrangement. But also, I’ve talked about this before, I feel like Illya is a pretty handsy person, like he really goes for casual affectionate touches, so it would track looool.

But I really can’t see Napoleon or Gaby as the heart of the group (because I feel like Gaby deals with her emotions by pushing them away with a baseball bat, while Napoleon sees an emotion, locks it in a closet, throws away the key and goes “WELL never thinking about THAT ever again ahahah” and lives in denial until the closet explodes), so I’d go for Illya as the heart, because he seems to me like the most emotional one out of the three, the one that would be more prone to explictly expressing his feelings (I mean.........to be fair, it’s a low bar) and the one who is more open to letting his partners in and to be in touch with what he’s feeling to begin with. I also tend to see him as the more idealistic one out of the three of them, so.

Pertahanan terbaik adalah menyerang. Dengan jalan pikiran tersebut, seorang petarung menciptakan peluangnya sendiri untuk menang. Tidak berdiam diri untuk menunggu momentum, melainkan menjemput bola untuk meraih kemenangan. Strategi ini dinilai lebih berani ketimbang menunggu musuh dari dalam benteng, karena petarung tersebut berusaha keluar dari cengkraman musuh dan sekaligus mendominasi lawan.

Untuk mengaplikasikan strategi tersebut diperlukan kecepatan tinggi. Napolen Bonaparte, seorang Kaisar dan Jendral yang jenius, adalah komandan yang menggunakan kecepatan tinggi untuk mengalahkan manuver lawan-lawannya. Rivalnya seringkali terkejut dengan siasat perang Napoleon yang menyerang dari samping, dari belakang, dan atau melingkari pasukan lawan. Banyak Kaisar dan Panglima perang Eropa yang kewalahan untuk menghadapi Napoleon seorang diri. Sampai-sampai mereka harus membentuk aliansi/koalisi militer untuk mengimbangi keperkasaan militer Prancis di bawah naungan Napoleon Bonaparte.

Salah satu kemenangan heroik yang diraih Napoleon adalah ia berhasil menahan pasukan Austria yang jumlahnya sangat besar di Italia, 50.000 tentara. Pada bulan Oktober 1796, Napoleon yang berusia 26 tahun menghadapi Jendral senior dari Austria, Baron Joseph d’Alvintzi. Pasukan Austria menyerang basis Napoleon di Verona dengan dua pasukan. Pasukan utama dipimpin oleh d’Alvintzi melalui jalur atas dan pasukan kedua dipimpin oleh Jendral asal Rusia, Davidovich yang mengambil jalur bawah.

 D’Alvintzi membawa pasukan sebanyak 18.000 dan Davidovich membawa pasukan yang lebih besar. Rencananya ialah memerangkap Napoleon di antara kedua pasukan ini. Jendral Autria itu memberi pilihan sulit kepada lawannya. Bila Napoleon memperkuat pasukan untuk melawan Davidovich, Verona akan melemah terhadap serangan d’Alvintzi. Sebalinya, jika ia memperkuat pasukan untuk melawan d’Alvintzi, Verona akan jatuh di tangan Davidovich. Ditambah lagi, bila salah satu pasukan dapat melewati Verona, pasukan Austria dapat membebaskan sekutunya di Mantua yang berjumlah 20,000 tahanan perang. D’Alvintzi juga tahu bahwa pasukan Prancis sangat kelelahan karena telah bertarung tanpa istrirahat yang cukup dalam 6 bulan terakhir.

Di awal November, d’Alvintzi telah memasuki Utara Italia. Sementara itu, Napoleon mengirim pasukan kecil untuk menghadapi Davidovich. Dengan jalan ini, Napoleon harus membayarnya dengan dua kekalahan beruntun, kekalahan terhadap Davidovich dan kekalahan melawan d’Alvintzi di Caldiero, 18 km dari barat Verona.

Napoleon membalikan keadaan dengan memutus jalur komunikasi dan perbekalan pasukan Austria. Ia juga berhasil mensiasati lawannya dengan memberi kabar burung. Alhasil, d’Alvintzi gagal membaca gerakan Napoleon yang telah membagi pasukannya di Verona untuk menghadapi d’Alvintzi atau Davidovich. Lagipula, Jendral Austria itu terdistraksi untuk menyerang perbekalan pasukan Prancis di Villa Nova ketimbang merebut Verona terlebih dahulu.

Titik-balik terjadi ketika dua pasukan itu bertempur di sekitar sungai Arcola. Prancis melawan habis-habisan pasukan Austria. Napoleon memimpin beberapa penyerangan dan hampir saja gugur di medan perang. Setelah bertarung yang tiada membuahkan hasil di kedua pihak, tiba-tiba saja di hari ketiga pasukan Prancis berhasil menyelinap ke samping barisan pasukan Austria. Suara terompet berganti dengan teriakan dan tembakan yang bertubi-tubi. Kemunculan yang tak terduga dan tiba-tiba itu membuat pasukan Austria panik. Tanpa menghitung pasukan lawan yang datang dari samping, d’Alvintzi mundur seketika untuk menghidari Napolen yang sudah membuat barisan di sungai Arcola.

D’Alvintzi harus mengurungkan asanya untuk merebut Verona dan membebaskan tahanan perang di Mantua. Entah bagaimana Napoleon merebut kemenanan setelah menerima kekalahan beruntun. Kemenangan di pertempuran Arcola menambah daftar kekalahannya sehingga masuk dalam kategori Jendral legendaris.
