It's Printed Matter's New York Art Book Fair this weekend, so I've decided to publish a new project, Untitled (Grave Matters), which is a set of screenshots of art historian Anna C. Chave's devastating lecture on Carl Andre, which she delivered at the symposium linked to Dia's 2014 Andre retrospective.
Though she discussed them at length, Andre refused to let Chave publish images of two macabre works he made after he was acquitted for the murder of his wife Ana Mendieta. Untitled (Grave Matters) fixes that.
During NYABF, drop me an email, and I'll send you a signed and stamped edition. After that, we'll see.

一瞬の10月。
アメリカから帰国して1週間ちょっと経った。早すぎる。
Tumblr media
今回はいつもの仕入れにプラスして、インプットの旅と題してNYで数日過ごしました。
(3年ぶりにcommuneさんがNYABFに参加するということで、それも口実に‥)
Tumblr media

Tumblr media

I went to the NY Art Book Fair (NYABF) today and I highly recommend it!!! There were so many books and artworks by so many artists. One of my favorite books was Art Prison: Coloratura, by Geoffroy Pithon, printed and published by Knust/Extrapool. The stencilprinted colors in the book reflect the most important colors Geoffroy uses in his paintings. Most of the postcards are free. Honestly, I can't control my wallet when I shop at this place. The last picture are artworks I got today and I'm especially satisfied with it!! By the way, This exhibition is only open once a year, the day after tomorrow is the last day, highly recommend!! I believe it can also bring you guys a lot of inspiration.

It’s only the first day of the virtual New York Art Book Fair and just like the ones I’ve attended in person I’m on cloud nine, giddy and exhilarated and inspired.
Because I watched a presentation on a publishing project I’d never heard of I found out about an artist I never heard and already I feel her deep in my soul as an artist mentor/godmother/soulmate. TAKAKO SAITO! (She was a member of Beau Geste Press, that publishing project that I also want to devour.)
Already I’ve purchased an exhibit catalog for a show she had a few years ago...Powell’s had a copy in their remote warehouse so I can even pick it up in my neighborhood!
Also, the first presentation of the day was one that I was hesitant to attend even though I consider it’s presenter to also be a creative soulmate, Dayanita Singh. And that did not disappoint either! I didn’t intend to take notes, planning to just sit and soak in the 1.5 hours of her chatting with the director of Offset Press in India. But what she was saying was resonating so deeply that I had to grab my Notes pad and write it all down.
Her approach to photo editing was refreshing, a contrast to more traditional (and possibly, masculine?) approaches.
She sees book building as part of the process, “…a way of engaging with your material, engaging with photography. Using the aspects of making a book to understand your material more in an analog way. I don’t feel the same thing happens on a computer unless you’re wanting to make a website. The physicality of cutting [paper]...makes you engage with them photos.”
I don’t want to forget to mention this incredible point she made:
If her books are in the library, they can be borrowed; but if they are in the gallery or museum, they cannot be borrowed and studied by people. In fact, moments before the program began, the curator of the series, David Senior, popped into the Zoom room and she asked about the location of her book objects at SFMOMA, pushing him to consider and acknowledge the isolation of museum objects. God, I love how she PUSHES and she does it without remorse or giggling.
PS: It occurs to me that finding a creative forbearer is earth-shattering because somehow it gives me permission to mine that latent idea/project/thought/spark and move forward with it. It’s like the knowledge of that person existing lives in me and they keep me company.
