⌨️ + The Devil’s Pawn (tag you’re it)

Otto wiped his mouth with the cloth napkin. “Perhaps you ought to visit Queen Aemma today, Julienna,” he said. “I’m sure she’d love your company.”

Hugging Braedon tighter, Julienna couldn’t help but feel torn about visiting the queen.  While Julienna had loved her time in Aemma’s charge, she wasn’t sure how her queen would feel about her son.  Julienna had born her husband a son, something Queen Aemma hadn’t been able to do with success.  She didn’t want to upset the queen and cause any ill will between them over the gift Julienna had been bestowed by the gods.

Knowing her father expected an answer, Julienna answered coyly. “I’m still quite weary from my travels, Father.  But I will see that a missive reaches Queen Aemma announcing my return.” She would let Queen Aemma decide if and when she wanted to meet.

Otto considered his daughter’s words.  Julienna thought he might argue with her on the matter, but after a frustrated cry from Braedon, he nodded his head.  She blew a stray tendril from her face.  This game wasn’t one she was ever going to win.  But she was capable of making her own moves every now and then.

⌨ + The Devil's Pawn

“Did you sleep well?” Alicent asked cooly, hugging her nephew tight.

“Best sleep I’ve had in quite some time,” Julienna responded as she crossed the distance between them before kneeling down.  She pressed a kiss against her son’s head and then glanced up at her sister. “Although I could have done without the fright of finding my son missing.”

Alicent sighed. “We didn’t want to wake you.  After everything you shared last night, I thought you’d appreciate not having to wake so early.  We thought a little lie-in would do you good.”

“I do appreciate it, my dear sister.” Julienna then pressed a kiss against Alicent’s forehead. “I was worried is all.  I’m always worried about him.  I worry about him getting hurt and not being there to make it better and I worry because he’s a Lannister in King’s Landing with godforsaken scoundrels willing to do godforsaken things.  A mother can only do so much and worrying is one of the few things within my control.  You’ll understand someday.”

Alicent face turned into a pout. “I hate it when people say that. People are always telling me that, like I’m nothing but a child.”

Julienna gently gripped Alicent’s chin, which surprised her sister.  Alicent’s large eyes met Julienna’s. “Don’t be so quick to wish away your youth, my dear sister. Enjoy it while you may because someday you may find yourself futilely wishing it back.”

Alicent’s lips rolled together. “Is that truly how you feel?”

“I love my son and I wouldn’t trade that for anything,” Julienna whispered before she sighed. “But you and I are nothing more than pawns in a game that we have no choice but to play.  Only we don’t make the rules nor do we decide the moves.  It’s all decided for us. For now, consider yourself lucky that your piece hasn't yet been played, Alicent.”

“Now, if you’ll excuse me I need to see that Braedon is . . . “ Julienna began, standing up from her spot at the table.

“Alicent will see to that,” Otto announced. “Won’t you? Perhaps take him out for a bit of fresh air.”

Alicent, who was mid bite, looked between her father and her sister.  She opened her mouth as if to say something, but then thought better of it.  As the dutiful daughter, Alicent nodded her head.  She wiped her hands on her napkin before standing up and reaching over for young Braedon.

“What’s my name?” Alicent cheerfully asked her nephew.

“Al-a-fint!” Braedon shouted with a toothy grin. “Al-a-fint! Al-a-fint! Al-a-fint!”

Alicent sighed as she placed Braedon on the ground and took hold of his hand. “Perhaps we should practice more.  Now, repeat after me . . . “

The two descended the stairs and their chatter grew fainter.  Julienna’s heart raced as her father motioned for her to be seated once more.  Also the dutiful daughter, Julienna sat down, but refused to meet her father’s gaze.

“Alicent will make an excellent mother someday,” Otto mused.

Julienna knew she should have bitten her tongue, but she coudln’t.  With her mother passed-on, it was her duty to also look out for her sister. “Not anytime soon, I hope,” Julienna retorted.

Otto’s brow furrowed. “Surely you’re not wanting to deny your sister a secure future.”

“Of course not, Father. But Alicent is young yet. Let her enjoy her youth while she can.  It’s what Mother would have wanted.”

He sighed. 

Julienna knew the exact card to play against him - her mother.  But would it be enough to save Alicent from her fate so soon? She said a quick silent prayer to the gods that it would.

Probably Julienna Hightower. It's mostly because I'm scared of the fandom. lol. I'm not overly versed in that fandom and I know how harsh it can be. But it seems like fun!

⌨️(found it!) + The Devil’s Pawn?

Julienna slowly stretched her sore muscles when she finally awoke in the morning.  Although, to her great confusion, Braedon was not resting beside her.  Nearly flying from the bed, Julienna searched the room for  sight of her son.  She first checked beneath the bed.  Then she flung open their trunks.  She tore the covers from the bed. Still no sign of him.  Her heart began to beat rapidly.

Surely the Lannisters wouldn’t have been so stupid.  She had their blessing to bring him to King’s Landing until he was of a more mature age to inherit his father’s estate.  Could it all have been a cleverly designed ruse?  If so, then why not kidnap him on the Gold Road?  Why take him from within the safety of the Red Keep?

But then the blessed sound of Braedon’s giggles reached her ears.  Julienna’s hand flew to her chest and she breathed a sigh of relief before attempting to follow the sound of her son’s giggles.

“Say it,” Alicent’s muffled voice called.

“Al-a-fint!” Braedon called before bursting into giggles.

“You’re doing this on purpose now, aren’t you?” Alicent retorted.

Julienna flung open the door of her chambers that led to the corridor.  Seated on the stone flooring was Alicent holding grinning Braedon on her lap.  Braedon was snuggled up close to his aunt and still giggling.

Can I just say I am in LOVE with your Hightower OC 🥰

Oh! That's so sweet of you to say. Julienna was the first HotD OC I came up with, but I saw a bunch of other Hightower OCs when I created her, so I held off on publishing anything.

I don't have a whole lot yet. I'm thinking she marries Daemon a bit preseries - so then when Aemma dies, Otto is like dangit - I should have waited to force Julienna. So then it falls on Alicent. But Otto comes to find that this is to his benefit until Rhaenyra is named heir.

The title The Devil's Pawn - is because at first she is her father's pawn, but then she becomes Daemon's as well.

What’s your inspiration for your Juilenna Hightower OC? I like her a lot. How would you imagine she fits into the HOTD verse?

Honestly, the biggest inspiration was that I had actually seen the source material and I wanted to try my hand at that fandom. lol.

Julienna is there to shake things up! I'm not sure quite how much she'll change things - but I'm having fun attempting to write for the fandom.

March 25: I have a house. I have three cats. I have a dog. Life is good.

Oct. 22, 2023: That March update was a huge LIE! (Okay - as far as tumblr & fanfiction was concerned, yeah - it was decent. lol) BUT I had a super toxic work environment, which affected so many aspects of my life. I have since gained two more diagnosis: PTSD (due to the toxic work environment and toxic former principal - who literally showed up at my house) AND I finally was diagnosed with ADHD. I also have a much much much much better job - where I can leave work at work. I don’t mind talking about the summer from hell - but I’m not going to put it all right here. lol. (Oh, and I failed at fostering a kitten, his name is Arthur! lol)

My name is Kassandra. Kass works too! (Some people from wayyy back do call me Jan - because of a former url)

There are times when life gets in the way of me getting stuff onto ocappreciation. I do save any email notifications I get, so I can get back to them when I can. Also, another admin has been added to ocapp to help bear the load with me.

I get many asks about what programs I use to make my graphics. Pixlr BG can be used to remove backgrounds. Pixlr Templates is what I use to make aesthetics and moodboards. Pixlr is the programs I use for manips, banners, posters, story covers, etc. I’ve dabbled with Photopea, but I’m more comfortable with Pixlr. EZ-GIF I typically use to make simple gifsets I also occasionally use online-image-editor for gif overlays. I will also use LunaPic for certain animations. I’m new to the process of gif manips. A lot of times I don’t like what I make - BUT I use photopea for that.

Is there any easier way than what I do? YES! But it’s what I’m comfortable with and most of those are pretty beginner friendly.

I DO NOT TAKE GRAPHIC REQUESTS unless, I’m having a giveaway or I tell you to send a request my way. Usually if you’re an OC creator new to my blog and are following me, I’ll sometimes ask to make you something. Otherwise, look for the giveaways.
