all this talk about Pen and Eloise mending their friendship but let's take just a second to be real. i mean really real.
if your best friend did to you what Penelope did to Eloise, would you ever trust that person again?

probably very controversial, but i feel like eloise's anger at penelope at the end of season 2 is justified? like, yes penelope did hurt eloise in an attempt to help her, but i also think eloise was right and penelope did it in part to help herself. like, there are so many issues with how they communicate in that final argument and neither is completely right or completely wrong but in the end i think penelope wasn't listening to eloise far more than eloise wasn't listening to penelope.
asdfghjhgfdsdfgh, i know i said i'd answer these on wednesday but you know how it is asdfggfdsdfg
ohmygod, okay, yes, i have had major beef with penelope for two seasons now and i'm glad i'm not the only one!!!!! like, yes, penelope is an intriguing character and i feel sorry for her unrequited love, but !!!!! that doesn't mean i can't fundamentally disagree with her !!!!!!
as a person (and character) penelope is the absolute opposite of what i respect and value. i remember feeling so betrayed and upset in season 1 when she tells everyone marina's secret. i don't care if penelope ~loves~ colin she handled that sO. INCREDIBLY. POORLY. she has few qualms betraying her friends (and i come to this conclusion because she doesn't exhaust all other avenues first before going for the killing blow) and she has the gall to feel sorry for her own loss after it all. ma'am?????? like, with the marina situation, she could have *gasp* told colin he was being entrapped??? because if it's truly about him and penelope not wanting him to face scandal, then the obvious answer is to tell him what's happening! but it wasn't ultimately about him only, because she doesn't tell him! because he might be fine with it and marry marina anyway! and penelope ultimately doesn't care that one of her friends would have to face such a devastating fate if it means she still has the slim chance of being with colin. if marina had to live destitute because of the whistledown situation and penelope was able to marry colin, pen would have been fine with that outcome. because it serves her. damn. okay.... be cruel to your inner circle i guess. loyalty? who's she???
and that principle of pen's character translates over to this season with eloise!!!! i was actually glad that there's that consistency with her character (because damn the showrunners really did say 'let's reinvent anthony's personality for season 2.' like, it was done well and i like anthony better but it doesn't change the fact that he's so markedly different this season...), but it really shows the ruthlessness of her character! pen is so incredibly self-serving and self-preserving that she will step over anyone and everyone in order to protect her best interests! i mean i think that's such an interesting character beat - especially for a woman! - and it means we can push her to the absolute edge at all times and watch her destroy everyone before herself, but it's just inherently against my own morals that i just... i can't vibe with penelope. i mean, once again, penelope had every opportunity to tell eloise that she was whistledown after eloise reveals her family is in danger! penelope could have faced the ire of her friend and quite possibly the rejection, but then they could find some way to work together to salvage the situation, y'know? they could still be pissed, but at least your best friend's ENTIRE FAMILY won't be ruined! but instead, penelope decides to protect herself! and absolutely destroy eloise in whistledown because "it's something eloise can bounce back from because she's from a popular family," completely IGNORING the fact that the bridgerton family has already faced so many scandals, it's unlikely they'll be able to bounce back from such a big one at that. and they still have so many family members unwed! there's so many lives at stake, but pen is able to rationalize it all away in her own mind for her self-preservation.
it's certainly interesting, but eloise deserves to go off at penelope, and while eloise made many missteps you cannot tell me that penelope was in the right. in the end, penelope had every opportunity to come clean, and again, WHO sabotaged the family of WHO?

I know nobody wants to hear about Penelope anymore but I want to get my two cents in. I never really cared much for her so I‘m not like one of her Stans or whatever, I feel like she should’ve faced more consequences for the whole Whistledown-thing. But about what she did in the show: It was bad like real bad and definitly could‘ve been solved differently but like Marina did not have the moral highground here. I get that she was pregnant and desperate because of her reputation. It was life and death but Marina could‘ve married some old dude who wouldn‘t care about the baby. Instead she uses Colin. Colin did not deserve to be deceived like that. He was nothing but nice to her and she used that against him. That was an awful thing to do. But I‘ll give her one thing it was understandable. Who wouldn‘t rather have the sweet young man instead of some old creep?
And here is where I come to Penelope. One thing I will say in her favor is that I understand why she didn‘t want Marina and Colin to marry. Not just because she is in love with him but also because she likes the Bridgertons. Eloise is her friend fo heaven‘s sake so I didn‘t find it too bad that she didn‘t want them to marry. She also did try to tell Colin that Marina was in love with someone else, to protect Marina from ruin and well stop them from marrying. Didn‘t work. And here comes where my opinion kinda differs from yours. I watched the show before I read the books but to me it seemed like Penelope did what she did not because of Colin but because of what Marina said to her. I honestly believe if that hadn‘t happened Penelope would‘ve kept quiet. I see a lot of people saying what Marina told her was the truth and yes it probably was but the way she said it well…. It was not nice. Penelope had up to that point been Marinas only friend and ally. I believe she felt betrayed by being dimissed like that. And that‘s what Marina did she dismissed Penelope and not even in a nice way. She basically didn‘t care for what Penelope had to say. I‘m not saying she had to say yes I won‘t marry him but like a litte more explanation and empathy and that she is sorry something like that would’ve been nice. I understood why Penelope was mad at her after that.
What Penelope did was awful. It was mean, petty and vindictive and she could‘ve done it in another way. She could‘ve gone straight to Colin/Violet/Anthony and tell them in private. But she didn‘t. Instead she printed it out for all to see. And the one thing that really stuck with me is that they way she did it was so stupid it couldn‘t have been like a real plan where she was like I want to destroy her but like something you didn‘t wholly think through. Because in the process of ruining Marina she ruins her entire family (herself included!). Everyone could‘ve known that would happen yet she did it anyway. The only reason why the Featheringtons surrived this is because of Daphne and the death of Mr. Featherington (since everyone feels bad now). Two things Penelope could‘ve not predicted at that point of time. I believe it was a splitsecond decision and here is were I kinda get it. Sometimes you make a really stupid mistake that hurt a lot of people and you can‘t take it back but it all comes to how you act after what happened. In my eyes Penelope can still be redeemed if they show that she truly regrets it and tries to make amends.
We have not seen much regret from her in season 1 but to be fair we are not supposed to know she is Whisteldown at that point so I can imagine that we might see something next season. If they go the same route as they did in the books where everyone pretends it‘s not a big deal than she is every bit as awful as you say she is. I for one am really curious for what is to come there. I honestly think they might can make her interesting because in the books she was just not.
And sidenote: No matter if they make Penelope take responsibility or not there is NO WAY the will keep the Marina Plotline, at least not the way it went down. If they come this far they will make Marina die from an illness or an accident. Phillips and her marriage will not be a loving one but one with friendship (because this is a romance show and you can only have one true love here). Even if they redeem Penelope I feel like more or less driving someone into suicide is a lot, especially if she is a good person again. Because no decent person I know could ever forgive themselves for that no matter how much they tried to make amends and regret what happened.
Thank you for taking the time to write all that out! I think your opinions differ a bit from mine, but I won't get too into it, mostly because I've posted my views on the subject in great detail in the past. Also, people ("stans") seem to love policing what I have to say on Penelope, and it's quite frankly getting exhausting, and a bit vulgar.
I guess the big question is, where do we go from here? There are certain givens in this series that we know, namely, that Penelope will end up with Colin. I think if the writers want people like me to root for Penelope once more, and like her as a person, they'll have to give Penelope some grand realization that she's fucking with people's lives as Whistledown, and then try to atone for her mistakes. Her work as Lady Whistledown is only a girlboss-esque triumph as long as the readers/viewers are convinced the people she writes about are horrible and deserved every rumor she spreads about them to her enormous audience- which they aren't, and therefore don't. Daphne is her target at some point, so is Colin indirectly, and of course Marina. So Penelope will need to understand that, in my opinion.
I would like her to beg Marina for her forgiveness, and whether Marina gives it or not will be entirely up to her and based on however decent (or not so decent, like book!Marina's circumstances when she struggles with depression) her circumstances are at that point in the story. I would also like Marina to not die to advance another white woman's love story.

Ranking the Bridgerton Books
I've read all but one at least twice now, so I'm gonna give my ranking. 1. Romancing Mister Bridgerton - Colin and Penelope since the first time I saw them interact in the show, but their dynamic in the book I like just as much. You get snippets of them being around each other in the first books, but there is a pivotal scene in An Offer From A Gentleman that hurt me into my soul and I have never felt for someone as much as I felt for Penelope in that moment. And then in their book, you can see their friendship grow because as long as he's known her, it's taken him so long to see what everyone else already did. Penelope is amazing, even if she is hiding things from him. The scene in the carriage, but specifically their first time and Colin thinking that he wanted to make love to her in front of a mirror one day so she could see what he saw...lord. Also, Lady Danbury is phenomenal in this book. 2. This was really hard for me to decide which one I liked more, and the truth is, I actually read one of these books more than twice and that was The Viscount Who Loved Me. If you know anything about me, you know that I am a huge fan of Enemies to Lovers, and boy does this deliver on that. I love Kate. She's a whole lotta spitfire and just says things to Anthony that NO ONE else would say because she's adamant that her sister could do better. But then things shift and she sees him differently. The storm scene in the library cemented my love for Anthony Bridgerton. The "Oh Kate" KILLED ME. Dead. The Pall Mall game, which, I'm gonna be honest, if they don't give to us I will be FURIOUS! That shit was legit funny. But then there's the bee, the gazebo, Colin pissing off his brother. And the love story between Kate and Anthony and how these two idiots find love in one another is just *chef's kiss* 3. This was really hard because I loved this book so much. When He Was Wicked is the spiciest of all the books in my opinion. And it's because we start with Francesca being married. You don't see her wedding or courtship to her husband, John, in the other books, you just learn that she was married. And her relationship seems to be a good one. They love and care for each other. But that's not the story that's actually being told. We meet Michael Sterling (and if he's not played by Richard Madden I'll fucking burn the world down), a rogue, rake, an altogether scandalous man, and the cousin and close confidant of both John and Francesca. There's already a flirtation with Michael and Franny before John dies, but Michael would never act on it. Then he dies and both of their worlds are turned upside down. But it's when Michael returns from India and the two are being sought after by others that they're teetering on the edge of something. Michael knows his feelings but doesn't think he can betray his cousin like that, and Franny is just afraid of her feelings for Michael all together. But then there's their first kiss, and then Michael riding to fucking Scotland to seduce her into being his wife, which she doesn't agree to do right off. But the creme de la creme of this book, aside from Franny finally realizing her feelings, is the scene in the cabin when they get stuck in the rain. It's one of the women taking her sexual agency and fucking using it, and Michael is a more than willing participant. That scene was fucking hot. They also have a beautiful Epilogue if you want to read it.
4. To Sir Phillip With Love is a strange one for me. I love that Phillip and his weirdness appeals to Eloise, who I don't think would ever be content with an ordinary man. I could also see someone like Eloise being courted in such an unusual way as letters. What kind of puts me off about this is Phillip's treatment of his children. I get that he eventually catches a clue as to what's going on with them, but through most of the book, he doesn't even bother trying to be close to them. The best part of this book are 1) the brothers Bridgerton storming into their home and trying to pummel Phillip all while Eloise fights them for her man, and 2) the scene at My Cottage where Philip seduces Eloise.
5. While I think this book is the most unoriginal in terms of beginning and end, it's not a bad book throughout the middle. And I'm talking about An Offer From A Gentleman. This series actually shows that Step parents/Siblings aren't all bad, take a look at the Viscount and you get nothing but love between Mary, Kate, and Edwina. But this book goes with the wicked stepmother. Of course it does, it's ripping off Cinderella. The first chapter with the ball had me uninterested and it felt like a slog to get through, but once we get away from the Cinderella aspects and get to Sophie and Ben's actual story, I'm more into it. UNTIL Benedict decides that he's going to wear Sophie down about becoming his mistress. From book to show, Benedict is the most different in my opinion. I can't imagine that guy ever doing what book Ben does to Sophie. When he finally realizes who Sophie is, it's cathartic really. Because on the one had, she's known who he is the entire time, even knew he was looking for her, and said nothing about it. I do love Violet in this book. I love their scenes at My Cottage and I love the idea of a Colin Firth type scene for our Benedict, but the rest of it left me very underwhelmed.
6. It's In His Kiss was cute enough, but my problem with this one is that Hyacinth is in all of the other books as a pesky younger sister, a girl if you will. So, it's really difficult for me to wrap my head around her being a grown woman at this time. And it would take a special man to handle her. Gareth is that man. I love the scenes with Lady Danbury. She shines everywhere she goes, though. I don't know, I just didn't feel this one and I guess it's because seeing Hyacinth grown is weird to me.
7. The Duke and I. If you've seen the show you've read the book, I feel. This book had so much promise until THAT scene. Like, I get it, you're mad about being lied to, but the man was drunk and Daphne took advantage of that. It caused him to start stuttering again, it was so damaging. And she wasn't sorry. I guess that's my real gripe. She wasn't apologetic about what she did. This is the only book I read once.
8. On the Way to the Wedding felt like a lesser version of the Viscount. Gregory wanting Hermione, but having to go through Lucy to get to her... I read this story before and it was done much better. Not that I dislike Gregory or Lucy. I don't. I just don't find either of them as compelling as Anthony or Kate. I don't have a lot of thoughts about this one because once I hit the wedding I was like "I just want to be done with it already". Maybe it was burnout. I don't know. Perhaps if I start with this one instead of saving it for last I'll have a better opinion.
