Okay, maybe you’re convinced. Now you want to know how/where to read MTMTE. Got you covered:

My very short answer: just read MTMTE in trade paperback form. That way all the issues are in order and you get all the extra stuff (there are prose stories after a couple issues that are very important so don’t skip them!) They’re available that way as both physical and digital books.

Here’s some ways to get access, legally (US centric, sorry):

If your local library has Hoopla (digital library subscription service), you may have access to some of the MTMTE trades that way. They’d be here; but check if you library has Hoopla first.

Your local library very well might have physical copies, so check their website!

If not and you’re very patient you can often request inter-library loans (your library borrows the books from another library) or request your library purchase materials.

You can buy digital trades via either IDW or Comixology. Comixology also includes the first 5 volumes in their comics subscription service. I’ve seen the series go on sale on both of these sites at least 4 times in the past 6 months, so keep an eye out! (Sometimes IDW participates in humble bundles, which are great, but those sales are far more infrequent)

Character Guides

So you’ve picked up this comic and oh boy there are a lot of robots. You’re a little intimidated. Maybe you’re having a hard time telling them apart.

If you have the paperback, there’s a guide to the characters on the back cover/the last page of the digital volume. See a copy here.

It’s okay if you keep reading not knowing who these robots are. For real. You’ll get the hang of it. Don’t worry if it takes you awhile and you’re confused. Everyone’s a little lost the first time through.

I finished MTMTE, what’s next?

If you want the direct sequel to MTMTE, go straight to Lost Light, the sequel series. It’s still ongoing and (as of right now) 12 issues have been released. There are spoilers for it EVERYWHERE on Tumblr, fair warning.

There are also a bunch of other series within the IDW comics universe, depending on what you’re interested in.

You don’t have to read all the books! If you want to just read Lost Light/MTMTE, you can do just that.

There’s also a bunch of animated series, which don’t exist in the same continuity as the IDW comics. Some of them are well liked.

There’s also the Michael Bay movies which are awful and so is he. Not gonna recommend watching them, but if you wanted to learn about film theory by listening to Lindsay Ellis dissect them, there’s a youtube series for that.

Fan Stuff

Okay...but what about fan content and fanfic and art and community events?

First thing to know: Transformers content is posted on tumblr under the tag Maccadam. (more detailed explanation why) A lot of mtmte content is also under ‘mtmte’, so look there too. I only use Maccadam if I think a post deserves to be seen by a lot of people but opinions vary.

Second thing to know - the sequel to MTMTE, Lost Light is still being published and you will see ALL SORTS OF SPOILERS for it on Tumblr. To mitigate the damage, try blocking “LL Spoilers” “Lost Light Spoilers” and “Wednesday Spoilers”. You cannot avoid it all, so if you don’t want anything spoiled, get caught up on both MTMTE and Lost Light before browsing around Tumblr.

Fanfiction:

Warning! A lot of Transformers fanfiction is smut. Please take a moment to integrate this fact into your understanding of the universe. If you can handle that, go ahead to AO3.

Do not compare Megatron to Hitler. The comparison is both vapid and offensive, as Jewish members of this community have pointed out time and again.

Don’t say transphobic/homophobic/racist/antisemitic/sexist things. You’re better than that!

Don’t attack the creators of the books/harass them on social media/make bizarre unfounded accusations of them acting in bad faith

we’re really lucky that JRo and the other creators interact with us & answer questions and don’t you dare screw that up, I’m trusting you.

on a less serious but useful etiquette note: don’t tag creators into negative reviews of their work/people complaining about their work. It’s rude to the creator & the reviewer.

That was a short list but remember to also treat other people with respect & that it’s okay to disengage with content/people that upset you.

Fandom:

okay so

the star wars thing

i personally really liked it. like my main complaint was the length which, i don’t really consider a big deal (in general or for this movie specifically). it did lead to some weird pacing where something would feel like a climactic battle (esp. the thing with rey and snoke) but then there’s still a big chunk of movie afterwards. but like. okay, fine.

the kylo thing is…honestly much better handled than I expected? like…yeah, he and rey interact a lot and it gets creepy at times but i’m pretty sure the way the movie ends does not lead to r*ylo. (do searches work for terms under a cut? not risking it). also him killing snoke was…good tbh. because it means he’s basically our main villain now. right? they’re not gonna have hux as the main villain. who would be intimidated by him. poe opens the movie openly mocking him on speaker phone. cmon.

thing is, i do not want a kylo redemption arc? like, i get that ROTJ was all “no one is beyond redemption” except 1) no it wasn’t, why else did the emperor get thrown into a bottomless pit 2) it was specifically anakin who wasn’t beyond redemption, which is a much better lesson IMO about knowing to pick your battle re: who to “save” and who to write off which leads to 3) the idea that we need to have a line, a point of no return, is immensely important in 2017, especially with kylo ren as the villain. i mean the dude would basically be a gamergater/alt-right/youtube “skeptic” bro if he lived in this reality. so fuck him, and fuck them.

this ties into the luke thing. i’ve seen people complain that he’s “not the real guy”. i’ve even seen one person on twitter talk down to millennials (like we didn’t grow up with star wars lmao) and explain as “imagine if harry potter got a sequel 40 years from now and harry was a cynical man who decides hogwarts must be burnt to the ground” and I’m just like…good? can I have this movie? because it’s true. like i’m sorry but if luke is a wise guy, then yeah, I hope he realized in 40 years that the jedi as an organized religion needed to fucking end. The whole “watching over a sleeping ben solo” is…weird, admittedly, but still.

and i’ve also seen people go “well he wouldn’t just give up” which…he isn’t, he just genuinely thinks the world will be better without super-powerful force users around. Which, there’s a case to be made there tbh. I mean we want force users because escapist fantasy but considering how rare it is and how powerful it is, the reality of it is probably not as fun as the idea of it. (side note, this is why i tend to write magic systems that are usable by everyone.)

(besides, what exactly were you expecting luke to be like. i mean the dude had gone missing and left a fragmentary map to find him. if he was still an idealist he’d have been there to fight the first order all along. lmao.)

anyway. speaking of overdramatic decisions, can we talk about how many Iconic™ moments this film has? i mean

luke standing up to an entire army and letting them shoot at him then brushing off his coat. fucking amazing.

two people (rey and luke) using kylo’s shitbaby attitude to distract him within 5 minutes of each other, and it working both times.

R2D2 replaying the Leia message from ANH. like. he was That Bitch.

Rose’s sister. RIP, she will be missed, but seriously, what a badass.

Rose tazing Finn even though she’s still starry eyed at him. like. hell yeah.

Holdo telling Poe off repeatedly, then countering his mutiny. I mean, it was weird of her not to share her plan with him, especially since she later goes “oh, I like him” with Leia, but still. she did that.

Holdo just ramming her cruiser into the first order fleet. Iconic.

Leia using the force to fly in space. You can’t beat that one. Icon of icons.

the movie’s not perfect, it definitely isn’t beating Wonder Woman as my favorite movie of the year (or of all time). it has some weird stuff, like the infinite mirror rey scene (which…doesn’t go anywhere as far as I can tell). but still.

also, finn and rose kissing…I mean, sure. technically she kisses him and it’s not very clear what his reaction is? (and then there’s a weird glance from rey at the two of them, which…okay, let’s not go the love triangle way pls) but even if finn and rose do end up together…i’m fine with that. Like, I can simultaneously want more queer rep in media and also not criticize media for not delivering it. It’s disappointing but not a dealbreaker for me.
