N’GOLO KANTE HAS joined Saudi Arabian champions Al Ittihad, the club said in a statement, joining up with French compatriot Karim Benzema. “Kante is an Ittihad player now!” the club said on Twitter, while chairman Anmar al-Hailee tweeted: “Welcome to our new tiger Kante,” a reference to the team’s nickname. The 32-year-old midfielder who joined Chelsea in 216 from Leicester becomes the latest in a line of European stars choosing to ply their trade in the desert kingdom, which is making big-money moves across elite sport. A dynamic and industrious midfielder, Kante won the World Cup with France in 2018. His club career also glitters. He won the Champions League and World Club Cup with Chelsea, as well as back-to-back Premier League titles with Leicester City and Chelsea. Kante’s contract with the London club was set to expire this month. He has signed a three-year deal with Al Ittihad, the Jeddah-based team said in a statement, though it gave no details of how much Kante will earn. “Kante’s addition to Al-Ittihad is considered one of the most high-profile and impactful signings in the club’s history,” the statement added. “It is part of the club’s efforts to establish itself as a top choice for world-class players in the Saudi Professional League.” Current Ballon d’Or holder Benzema joined Al-Ittihad earlier this month, after 14 seasons with Real Madrid in which he won five Champions Leagues, four La Liga titles and three Copas del Rey. In football, the presumed goal is hosting the World Cup, which is intended to lift Saudi Arabia’s profile and prestige as it tries to diversify its oil-reliant economy by attracting tourists and investors. In the coming years, Saudi Arabia will organise the men’s Asian Cup football, the Olympic-style Asian Games and even the Asian Winter Games in 2029. The Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), the state’s sovereign wealth vehicle, holds an 80% stake in Newcastle United, who finished fourth in the Premier League last season. In golf, the PIF has also ruffled feathers. It bankrolls LIV Golf, whose clash with the PGA Tour nearly caused a rupture in the sport. 1. Fasnacht

One of the largest festivals in Basel, Fasnacht offers grand crazy parades with revellers wearing monstrous masks and costumes inspired by mythical creatures, historical and political figures and even pop culture! Think of it like a halloween party, but on steroids! You will need to be up quite early to catch the festivities though, as Fasnacht kicks off in the wee hours of the morning at precisely 4am and runs for exactly 72 hours!

2.  Tschäggättä

Want to be part of a horror movie? Love being chased by things that walk at night? Tschäggättä is probably the oddest Swiss festival that you ever will come across. When night falls, these oversized masked figures appear unexpectedly and rampage through streets in various villages scaring children and spectators alike, and tossing soot at unsuspecting victims.

3. Sechseläuten

Celebrated during the first weeks of spring, Sechseläuten is an ancient spring custom of “chasing away winter" by symbolically burning the Böögg, a "disguised, masked snowman" sitting on a huge stack of wood.

4.  Chalandamarz

5.  Rosen Fest

6.  Belalp Hexe

The rules of the tournament are simple - regular skiers will get to start first, with a group of witches in tow! It’s a week filled with excitement for all ages, kids can join in the fun too!

7.  Mammut Flossrennen

Loosely translated to “Mammoth Soapbox Competition”, this colourful yearly spectacle involves dozens of soapbox floats racing each other along the Sitter and Thur rivers. Be prepared to delight in the craziness of it all and cheer in excitement as handlers frantically try to manoeuvre their rickety (and sometimes not very seaworthy) creations along the river’s rapids and bends

8.   Désalpe

There is a reason why Swiss cows are the world’s happiest cows! The Swiss people adore them so much, that they practically throw a homecoming for their cows after months of grazing in the high alpine pastures! Such events are called Désalpe (or Alpine Descent), and is celebrated all over Switzerland, with Charmey having the best and largest one

9. Klausjagen

Whenever you’re in Switzerland during yuletide, head down to Küssnacht for a Christmas treat! One of the weirdest festivals in Switzerland, Klausjagen literally means ‘chasing the Klaus’, and is widely believed to have sprung from an age-old tradition to chase away evil spirits. Beginning with whip cracking in the town’s roundabout to signal the start of the procession, it is followed by a procession of iffele lantern bearers, carried by almost two hundred men, casting a glow on the darkened streets

10.  Unspunnenfest

We saved the best one for last! One of Switzerland’s largest traditional festivals and an Olympics of sorts, Unspunnenfest features games such as yodelling, alpenhorn playing, flag-tossing, Schwingen wrestling, stone throwing (most notably of the historic Unspunnen Stone), on top of folk music, costumes and dance, all in one event! The last Unspunnenfest was held in Interlaken in 2017. If you’re hoping to catch the next one in the nearest future, sorry you’re out of luck! It’s held only once every 12 years, therefore you can only expect the next one to take place in 2029!
