It pisses me off how many residents of Newark are so loyal to Ras Baraka that they don’t see he’s got them living under loaded gun. Just because you see him Downtown speaking at protests, pretending he’s in solidarity with the protestors, doesn’t mean he’s for us. YOU CANNOT SPEAK OUT AGAINST OPPRESSION WHILE ACTIVELY DOING THE OPPRESSING! TF?!?! He’s selling Newark out to the realtors, to the banks. So what he’s giving Newark jobs? So fucking what he’s getting companies to do business in Newark,? So what he’s got the arts thriving in our city again? It’s a common way to control the masses, throw a few little treats here and there, so you won’t complain about your conditions. Newark still doesn’t have any clean water, Newark’s homelessness is steadily increasing, and Newark is undergoing gentrification, they’re trying to turn Newark into a college town. While Newark residents were outside protesting for clean water at the VMAs last August this mother fucker is inside posing and smiling for the camera. He said the call for “defunding the police” is’ a reactionary bourgeois liberal thing’ LMFAO.... ironic right? He has his goons attacking lifelong Newark residents at a Mutual Aid March, calling them “outside” agitators who’re trying to destroy Newark with the deputy mayor conducting this foolishness. He’s controlling the media’s image of ‘Newark’s peaceful protesting’ he’s controlling the protesting, because he wants to appeal to the realtors and the corporation like shit is sweet. Did mother fuckers just suddenly forget that he imposed one of the strictest curfews when lockdown for COVID-19 began? Those who reside in the low-income neighborhoods of Newark got hit with a 5 p.m. curfew. Imagine police patrolling an area where the demographic is mostly black, Latino, elderly and/or disabled? How can you justify drones flying over the area?

This is what I meant when I say liberals pose a much bigger threat than conservatives do to grassroot activist movements, because they’ll smile in your face and slowly kill you. They learn to speak the language so that you can’t tell who is really who, create discord and cynicism. And in Newark’s case, it isn’t just a matter of liberal fascism, it’s a combination of the Halo effect, celebrity worship, and black nationalism. You can’t say shit bad about him in front of most Newark residents, the Barakas are to Newark what Michael Jordan was to Chicago, it’s almost like a rabid fanaticism.

But people are starting to see the contradictions. Newark residents are fed up, they’re angry, they’re disillusioned, they want answers. And I pray that Newark read up on the history of their city. Corrupt mayors and government officials are all this city has ever known. People need to wake tf up. Ain’t no politician coming to save you from your plight, no matter if he’s the son of a famous Newark poet. To risk repeating myself, your oppressors can look like you too! Wake tf up Newark!

(Also, my examples used are for if you wanna start a BTS askblog, but it’s the same general concept if you wanna do something for another fandom) also sorry if this turns into something really long bc I tend to drabble a lot

Picking a member

Are you going to draw only 1 person? Or OT7? Or maybe a particular line? Or a particular ship? Some members/pairings are more popular than others (which can impact your target audience, but I feel like most BTS fans will love whoever you choose lol) This is usually the first step because everything else I’m about to mention starts from choosing your muse!

Ships!

Are you going to ship your muse at all? If so, do you have a main ship? Or are you like my indecisive butt and are open to any ship? (I’m multishipping bc I’m a lazy potato)

Is there an AU you wanna do? What are the other members’ roles in your AU? Creating a backstory for your AU is important because it give a lot of room for character development. Don’t be like me and have a rly vague AU where you don’t even know what’s going on. (Legit idk what I’m doing with my Begin!AU, literally just going with the flow LOL)

Either that or you can change it up! For me personally, I have several AUs that I like to doodle for! (I also have a non!AU for general questions as well!) So it’s really up to you on how you wanna approach things. ;o

Choosing a URL

Idk if this is worth noting, but I feel like choosing a url can impact how memorable you are? For me at least, it’s easier remembering a short url than a long one – it’s also easier to search for (ex. ask-jungshook is a lot easier to remember than ask-the-shook-maknae-jungshook – feel me?) Unfortunately a lot of urls might already be taken, so you gotta be creative

Interactions

I think one of the things that I was guilty of when I ran other askblogs was not interacting enough with my followers and other askblogs (I’m still guilty of the latter because I have like no time ahhhh one of these days I’ll spam you guys with questions, but that’s gonna be after the Newark concert lmfao) But yeah! I highly suggest talking to other askblogs & messaging them! We’re a pretty friendly community and most of us will probably yell about our love for BTS at you so don’t be intimidated or scared to approach us LOL Also it never hurts to ask other blogs if they wanna collab :) Also interact with your followers as well! Like originally, I was really hesitant to like post a bunch of admin spam/memes, because I hate the clutter and messiness of spam lol, but it’s one way to interact with your followers! (Like they get to know more stuff about you and that can lead to a conversation!)

Art

To be frank, I think this is probably what most people are looking for when they’re following an askblog. It’s more or less based off of 1) how you approach questions and 2) your art style. (Or at least from what I’ve seen)

You have to decide are you gonna stick to one picture answers? Or are you gonna do a comic? Are you gonna answer in colored pictures? Or in sketches? Are you going for a more serious approach to questions? Or are you going for a more comedic route? Honestly there’s a lot of options for you to do, I’d suggest doing whatever is most comfortable to you though ;o Tumblr users in general seem to be really picky when it comes to aesthetics in terms of like reblogging stuff, but play around with it and you’ll get a general sense of what people like! :)

Motivation

This probably should have been one of the earlier things listed, but you also gotta understand ask yourself why you wanna create an askblog. It it just for fun? Or are you doing it to improve your art? Or do you just wanna try something different? There are a lot of reasons why people choose to open an askblog, I’d advise when you create one to make a goal as well! And when I say goals, it’s more like “I want to have fun doing this” or “I want to meet more people who like BTS” and not “I want X amount of followers by ____” and “I wanna draw x amount of pictures by ____”.

Like for me, the main reason I started this blog was to experiment with my many styles and draw more people (so BTS fit the bill pretty nicely lol) It also kinda forces me to fill my quota for my new year resolution of cging something every month so there’s that too haha :) I also wanted to make new friends along the way so that was one of my smaller goals lol

That being said, it’s really easy to put pressure on yourself by running an askblog simply because it can be time consuming and you might feel pressured to answer in a certain way (that and there are a lot of us) – just don’t lose sight of your original goals and don’t lose track of what’s important! Art should be something that makes you happy- not about how many followers you have!

Be Patient

Slow and steady is always the motto! None of us started off with a bajillion of asks and followers overnight– so please don’t get discouraged if you see that you’re not growing as fast as other blogs might be. It’s because we all work at different speeds and have different concepts (which cater to different audiences), so I really do stress that you work at your own speed and what’s comfortable for you! But most importantly do whatever makes you happy :)

Also if you ever want me to promo something for you – send me an ask! (Probably the easiest way of getting my attention aside from messaging since I tend to miss a lot of intro posts lol)

Have Fun & Be Healthy!

At the end of the day, we’re all doing this for fun. So don’t worry about how many notes or followers you get. I wrote this previously on my huge wall of text about artists mentality way back when : your art should be for you. Don’t draw for the sake of followers or for the sake of notes because if that’s the case, you’re putting your happiness in other people’s hands and that can lead to a very toxic mental situation if you’re basing your happiness off of popularity over yourself. Instead draw for yourself & draw what makes you happy! Don’t be pressured to draw things you don’t want to – after all this isn’t your job. You’re not getting paid to do it. Take breaks if you feel overwhelmed (or avoid responsibility like I am and do admin asks instead of drawing lmfao) and take care of your well being. And as selfish at it sounds, always put yourself (well or at least your mental health) first! :)
