Ive come to the realization that the reason theres a small but loud group of people who are showing nothing but hate for the rwrb movie is because they have completely unrealistic expectations. People are forgetting that this is a cheesy romantic comedy, thats supposed to look and feel like a cheesy romantic comedy. This isnt going to be moonlight or gods own country or some other critically acclaimed, oscar nomintaed queer film that makes straight people go "hmm maybe they do deserve rights and respect🤷‍♀️"
Its gonna be a cheesy adult romantic comedy, thats gonna be a bit camp and over the top and thats exactly why its so good. I dont want to think about every gay movie I watch. I want to watch it and see two queer people fall in love and thats it. Thats how deep it goes. Maybe a sprinkling of politcal commentary in between.
There is this issue thats become bigger and bigger every passing year, that people expect every bit of queer representation to be the best thing ever. There can not ever be anything cringey or different or silly, and if it is then they send endless hate towards it, and in an industry that already hates to show queer people on screen, its this viscious cycle of someone finally being greenlit to make queer media, the media gets endless hate for not being perfect, the studio cancels the queer media before giving it a chance because theyve just 'proven that it wont make money', suddenly everyone is saying 'why do they keep canceling queer media😢', cycle repeats.
Im so over it. Let gay people be slightly cringy or cheesy or campy. Let queer media exist without putting it on this huge pedestal. Just enjoy things! And if you dont, dont watch it! Move on, find something better to do.
Yes!!! Thank you so much anon for putting this feeling into words much better than I could have!
"I dont want to think about every gay movie I watch."
Thank you.
I want light-hearted rom coms about queer adults just being queer adults and havig fun. I want comedy adventures where the characters just happen to be gay. I want more horror where at the end the final girl kisses a girl and can't belive they lived but not because they're gay. (suprisingly several of these exist and I love it)
I don't always want to think about the plight and horrors of being queer today with every queer movie I watch.
Sometimes, yes of course, I want to be seen on that level.
(Nimona, which came this weekend is a perfect example of a queer movie where I felt very very seen but also had a good time and was an incredibly silly fantasy adventure movie. But, still had the queer expereince intertwined.)
I'm looking forward to a movie that will be 90% rom com, and 10% realism/heavyness. re: being outed is a real thing that happens to people. famous people.
Alex and Henry go through some heavy shit. There's seriously traumatizing stuff at the end of the book. They're both dealing with mental illnesses, complex families, and rock-or-a-hard-place situations. I want all of that honored.
And, at the same time, I'm expecting a straight-to-streaming, mid-budget, movie that had to pass through a LOT of straight hands and board meetings to get to us.
Not to say we should love and accept every queer movie that comes out automatically, they have been done wrong in the past. (example: I skipped call me by your name bc the age gap still makes me too uncomfortable to watch)
But we have to give queer movies a chance to fit the genre they were made for, the tone they are made to be, and give queer creators a chance to show they are us annd they know us. The director is Bi. He's spent so much time going on about how much he related to Alex that he needed to make this movie. It's his first directing role, and I'm giving him a chance.

I’ve seen a lot of people decry criticism of the rwrb movie as simply either homophobic or anti-cringe, with the statement ‘let queer people have our cringe rom-coms’ a common defense. This idea is flawed for many reasons, not least of which being that this movie is like… barely queer. Sure it’s about a queer couple, but that’s about where it stops.
First off there’s the blatant bi erasure, with no discussion of Nora’s sexuality, no June/Nora/Pez, the word bisexual only being used once or twice in the whole movie, etc. Second off is the complete lack of queer education or community: where is Alex learning about the gay lib movement and feeling like he understands something new, deep within himself? Where is Henry talking about his role amongst the erased queer figures of the past? Where are the crowds supporting both of them, in the US and the UK? (the scene at buckingham where you don’t even see the crowd felt so cheap) Where was Amy’s role as queer elder and protector? Where was Luna, and Alex’s realization as to why he looked up to him so much and why his betrayal hurt so bad? Where was Alex realizing he and Liam had actually ‘had a thing’ when they were younger, and reconnecting with him as someone who can fully be himself? Where was all the support when they got outed? Where the fuck was Catherine? Where were Bea and Catherine fighting for them during the confrontation at buckingham? Movie!firstprince feel so isolated and without community, which is just SO not the world CMQ created in the book.
More broadly, the movie just felt so shallow. I completely understand the need for adaptation and translation to a new medium, but so many of the things they changed either lower the stakes or remove them entirely. Bea is a non-character, with no depth or backstory. Nora only exists to tell Alex to fuck Henry. Pez gets all of one line in the entire movie. June does not exist, which should completely change things because Alex does not act like the only/eldest child of the POTUS. We never really see the emails and a lot of them are adapted to onscreen dialogue, so what exactly was leaked? Why are they called the Waterloo letters? No one watching the movie alone will know. Who leaked them? I figure the movie implies it was Miguel, but then why have Richards be a character at all? CMQ was making a point with the Richards/Luna story, and the movie having a new side character as the “villain” is just… so disappointing. We don’t see any of the scenes of Henry acknowledging how fucked up the monarchy is (other than a few throwaway jokes), the comparison to the Empire, any of the Bea storyline, or him trying to avoid military service and renounce his royal inheritance, so the one line towards the end when movie!Henry has an outburst about the monarchy being antiquated is just completely unearned and comes out of nowhere.
They kept the line where Oscar tells Alex that ‘sometimes you just have to jump and hope it’s not a cliff’ but it’s now completely devoid of the context— that line is about Oscar telling Alex he doesn’t regret getting together with Ellen, no matter how it ended. It doesn’t work the same if Oscar and Ellen are still happily married! (Justice for Leo also tbh)
In the confrontation at Buckingham, the king (don’t get me started on the things they changed to avoid comparisons to queen liz) still suggests to Henry that they should claim the leaks are deepfakes and deny it, but Alex already gave the live televised speech in the movie timeline! It’s out already! The entire scene with the king honestly just does not work if Alex has already made the speech. Also side note, there’s absolutely no way in turbohell that Alex would make that speech without talking to Henry first.
There’s so much more I could talk about, from more script shenanigans to the Pip of it all, but this is honestly already way too long. All I want to say now is that it’s obviously everyone’s prerogative to like a movie or not, and nothing anyone else says should change the way you personally feel about a piece of art. That does not mean, however, that any criticism of said art is incorrect or unwarranted. You can like something and still acknowledge its flaws. And no, cringiness is not this movie’s main flaw.

I should be sleeping, but instead, I am awake thinking of a fanfic that I plan to post.
I've been going back and forth about something and maybe someone here may have an opinion. Not sure if it'll sway me either way, but I'd like to get some feedback.
So in the book, I think there is a strong case for Henry having autism. It could've been a fever dream, but I could swear CMQ maybe commented and agreed about this theory somewhere?
That said, I definitely take a lot of things from the book when writing post movie-verse canon fics, but not everything from the book fits in movie canon. When it comes to certain things, I worry that I may be projecting from myself and from book Henry too much.
Does anyone have any thoughts about Henry being autistic? It's just a couple of lines and not at all the theme "if you can make it one?" of my story, but I also don't want to be writing and leaning into that being a part of Henry being his true self in the movie version fic if that didn't seem to translate as such. Maybe it doesn't have to for some I suppose and that may be all right too of course. Would love some feedback. Gonna actually try to sleep now.
Edit: I suppose I'll be taking some time to think about this and how it is interpreted into my story. I may wait a little while to post it as I reflect on how I intend to incorporate this into my story. Thank you to those who commented with their thoughts and the link to the CMQ thread.

cmq characters' signature scents (because im insufferable)
inspired by me finding out that casey assigned their book four characters signature scents back in may and i completely missed it. these are not their signature fragrances (except alex and henry and kind of shara), but rather what fragrances would smell most like them.
alex claremont-diaz (red, white, and royal blue) - canonically santal 33 by le labo but also skins x vilhelm by vilhelm parfumerie for a bit more depth
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i know what the movie said. i think santal 33 is boring and basic. skins x vilhelm feels to me like an elevated version of santal 33 with a bit more depth and dimension, so it could perhaps be his more "adult" scent once he's a lawyer or what have you.
henry fox-mountchristen-windsor (red, white, and royal blue) - bois marocain by tom ford
Tumblr media
also a basic take, but hear me out!! i originally had henry with tobacco vanille, but it pulls kind of vanilla-y and sweet. i think he'd lean for something classic and understated but slightly different (which is where the pink peppercorn comes in, since it has a nice balance of spicy and floral), while still being palatable for the general public. it also has a similar core as santal 33 in the virginia cedar, which may have been how he recognized it on alex. he may have worn it before and moved on, and kept the base of virginia cedar.
august landry (one last stop) - good girl glorious gold by carolina herrera
Tumblr media
i actually have a fragrance in the mail as we speak that really fits the pancakes aspect of august's scent, but she canonically uses lemon soap, so i had to include it! ols is my favorite of the three published novels, and august is my everything, so picking out scents for her and jane was such a labor of love for me.
reminder, this is not the scent august uses (she doesn't have time for perfume while she's solving the mysteries of her sexy subway girlfriend!), but rather what she just smells like. at the core, i wanted lots of sweet notes, because her pancake aroma never wears off, but also coffee for the long nights spent on the train and coffee tits and citrus for her soap.
jane su (one last stop) - kasbah by 19-69
Tumblr media
to quote august herself, "jane is spun sugar. a switchblade girl with a cotton-candy heart." so, i had to reflect that. leather and sugar, with a bit of oranges (electricity not included). finding a fragrance that had leather, orange, and sugar notes (of any variety) was near impossible, so if y'all will forgive me for using honey, i had to go with the second best option.
again, she isn't going out and buying this fragrance. kind of hard to do so when you're stuck in a time loop. this is just the essence of jane, so to speak, if it were to be bottled up into a fragrance.
chloe green (i kissed shara wheeler) - dodo (2020) by zoologist
Tumblr media
i wanted a weird girl dark academia perfume and it was not coming up with my existing notes so this is what i settled on. in my head for chloe i was not picturing her as wearing fragrances, but rather having a permanent scent of either coffee or tea and then some weird ass linger scent like blood or dirt or something.
obviously, this is not really that, but i think the brand zoologist itself has that very vibe (go take a look, their stuff is cool as hell). dodo is kind of in the middle of ultra weird and tame with their stuff, and i think it fits the vibe i'm sort of going for. chloe also mentions in one chapter that one of her favorite smells is when one of her moms brought home fresh cilantro, so herbal notes felt appropriate.
shara wheeler (i kissed shara wheeler) - dilis classic collection no. 21 by dilis parfum
Tumblr media
shara canonically wears lilac body spray and vanilla-mint lip gloss, so i took those notes and ran with it. this is like a more nuanced version of what shara would smell like, with things like pepper and cedar grounding a very floral scent. when it dries down, it's vanilla and cedar based, rather than the lilac everyone expects from shara, creating the idea and imagery that she's not exactly what everyone thinks she is.
i hope y'all enjoyed getting a look into what my brain is like on a daily basis! i love fragrance and talking about it and especially love attaching it to fictional characters since i think it says so much about them and their personality. maybe i'll fuck around and do more characters but i wanted to do the main romances? kind of? from each of the three.

Fic Rec Friday
Tagged by @welcometololaland @liminalmemories21 ❤💕
This week’s theme: Rec a ‘gateway’ fic - a fic that you read and it was so good it lead you to read multiple works by the same writer.
The rules: Tag a fic and explain why it was a gateway fic / what you liked about it. Then tag some people to see what everyone else is reading. Spread the love! Please tag @welcometololaland or #fic rec friday so she can compile the masterlist!
So here we go:
911 Lone Star:
The Ring-In by @welcometololaland
I don't remember how exactly I came across this, but I remember I was immediately intrigued! And it was a WIP at that time so I was waiting for it to be posted in its entirety so that I would be able to read it all in one go. But then I simply couldn't resist after seeing some asks on Lola's Tumblr about it. AND IT WAS SO GOOD!
"You have one new message..." by @paperstorm
So I remember around the time after DINAH last year people were talking about how Rafa said that Carlos left TK a voicemail when the plane was coming down & someone mentioned reading a fic about that so I went looking on ao3 & this is one of the fics I had found. And I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! I re-read it a couple times & then a few days later the first Missing Moments just dropped. So I was even more intrigued by Andie's fics!
In sickness and in health, in speeding and in no speeding by @goodways
So I remember that when this came out, there was actually talk in the fandom that TK was a speed demon. And then I just happen to see this on a Tarlos fic rec page & boy oh boy did I laugh at the coincidence of this all! And then I found Shannon's Tumblr blog & the live comments on a LS rewatch she was doing at that time!Amd that made me even more interested about the fics that came next!
RWRB:
A Distinctly British Take on Events by RevJohnO (not sure about their Tumblr url)
I think I randomly came across this fic on an RWRB fic rec page & I was immediately hooked! It was Henry POV of the entire events of the book, long before CMQ even announced the special edition with the Henry POV chapter. The writing style was brilliant & the way the author wrote Henry's character was mind-blowing!
Forever yrs, for evermore by @indomitable-love
I think this was among the first RWRB fics I read. I think I found out about this one from either a RWRB fic recs page or I went exploring the Alex/Henry tag on ao3. And I absolutely loved this fic & re-read it so many times! And then I remember reading 'Reclamation'. And boy was I totally hooked on the other fics!
Heart & Home by @rmd-writes
Again, one of the first RWRB fics I remember reading (and re-reading) & I loved Rae's writing style so much that I was just so intrigued! And then I saw that Rae wrote for Schitt's Creek as well. And then Rae started writing for 911 Lone Star as well! So I was triple-intrigued!
This was so much fun! As always, this got a few more fics added to my re-read list!
Really interested to see what everyone else comes up with!
So no pressure tagging: @rmd-writes @goodways @carlos-in-glasses @catanisspicy @sanjuwrites @beautifulhigh @three-drink-amy @sarnagati @ladytessa74 & anyone else who wants to participate!

Stealing this Anon from Bram, but I’m sure whoever sent it either follows me or wouldn’t care about me posting it here. I liked it and wanted to answer it too
Tumblr media
This person is 100% correct. I would also very much like to add that being Jewish isn’t just following a religion. Judaism is the religion, Jews can follow it. But Jews don’t have to be religious to be Jewish. Soooooooo many Jews are just socially/culturally Jewish nowadays, meaning they don’t attend services or take part in more religious aspects. They’re still Jewish, because the religion is simply a part, not the whole of being Jewish.
Now, some people think that Nora being Jewish was a throwaway line about her religion. It wasn’t. CMQ wrote about everyone’s either religion or ethnicity or both. Nora WAS NOT the only character with their religion mentioned. Alex and the fam. Henry and the fam. Zahra. All their religions were mentioned in the book.
And what would a Jewish actress have done to the movie? Given Jewish representation to the audience. Just by even having a Jewish actress there, you would’ve seen a Jewish character in every scene. She’s a main character of the movie (and I’d say book too), below Alex and Henry obvi but in the top 5 I’d say. When was the last time there was a young adult female Jewish main character in a tv show or movie that wasn’t: A. Played by a non-Jew, B: A Jewish stereotype, C: Running from their religion, D: Only there for laughs or ridicule, E: Dying
It almost never happens. Nora being Jewish in character and in actor would’ve shown the world that Jews are just normal people. That’s what’s so important.

For anon asking for sequel hints.
There was the CMQ insta (?) post where they were saying all the stuff they were currently doing and the ‘I am currently writing’ pic was just a picture of text saying REDACTED
A lot of people have taken that to mean they are writing the sequel but can’t say 🤷🏽‍♀️ IDK if their writing it means everyone is signed for it, or if they have to write it before anyone signs? Would be a shame for it to get written and then no-one signs to do it? So I’m guessing IF that was what was being written, it must be pretty certain? IDK how anything works?
^^^ good to add. i didn't add it in my initial response bc i think Casey's story was subjective and didn't want to make it my fact. i do think they're more involved in any potential sequel tho. and yeah idk how it really works either, but i assume some sort of outline script/plot has to be provided to entice actors etc
